    Mum lived in Melbourne during the war and often told me about how frightened all young women were at the time

  • @Mandy-dy7nj
    @Mandy-dy7nj 2 месяца назад +110

    I don't like the ending, it smacks of victim blaming. If these young women had not been out on their own, Leonski would almost certainly have kept looking until he found a victim. And unless all women were kept indoors whenever Leonski was out - he would have eventually found one.

      @@ileanaacacostaacosta1813 The only person responsible for murdering people is the murderer. If it hadn't have been Pauline, it would have been another woman and some women would have to be out late at night - a nurse on an evening shift trying to get home after work, for example

      Absolutely agree and I've just made a very similar comment! The murderer alone shoulders full responsibility for his own actions, and his own crimes. Innocent women just living their lives are not at fault for crossing the path of some maniac.

    I do not take the stance that he was "sacrificed" for Us / Australian relations. He was a simple serial killer who destroyed the lives of 3 innocent women and got what was coming to him...speaking as a US citizen...he was also responsible for adding extra terror upon an already horrible war situation.

  • @siobhanfagan-ss5rc
    @siobhanfagan-ss5rc 2 месяца назад +41

    At the end of the day this guy was a deranged murderer, so saying he was a sacrifice to Aus/USA relations is a bit ridiculous. Hard to feel sorry for him when three beautiful women were killed.

      I was also taken aback by the statement about him being a "victim" of something. Even if one was sick or traumatized (and who wasn't?) to proceed killing people with one's hands in a brutal manner showed that one wasn't human anymore.

    • @TonyMcnaughton-u8c
      @TonyMcnaughton-u8c 2 месяца назад +2

      @@Vic-on5icyou can’t say that behaviour isn’t human. It’s cowardly and revolting but those are human traits. The difference between people who act on their impulses and people who don’t is the simple act of deciding what kind of human being we want to be. That’s a question most people need to ask.

    Trust me, American GIs didn’t volunteer for duty in Australia back then. No “cushy” duty there compared to being back home. Aussies were great fighters and their government should have taken better care of them.
    I have no doubt that there were American soldiers who disgraced their uniforms, and their country. War and alcohol has never brought the best out of any country. Disgraceful behavior is common during war and has been documented in just about all country’s military personnel. Germans,Russian, Italian, Japanese and British soldiers have all been involved in disgraceful conduct. I can’t speak for other nations but we know exactly how to handle a soldier/shipman who does this type of thing.

      That is very truth war is a sociopathic affair to say the least , but what is really annoying is that westerner propaganda always smears only the ones that they consider enemies.They are always the '' righteous'' side and smear people who actually defend their countries almost with their bare hands and rudimentary weapons. They smear the real heroes and make them look vile and ridiculous , while they make sure the westerner war criminals look like knights in shinny armours.

    Wow, could you perhaps put a bit more blame on the victims for daring to go out in their own city?This man killed three absolutely innocent women. Imagine their terror and the impact on their families. His early years were definitely tragic; he should have been sent to jail and never allowed out rather than hanged. But this video is far too sympathetic to the killer and forgets that these women did not deserve to be brutally murdered.

    The presence of US GI's in NZ caused harm in that the girls of the day loved them.. the perks, promiscuity, dance halls, plenty American movies with all the latest fashions, and of course, the dialogue and affectations they adopted as the young do. The returning men, the quiet of the 'nuclear family' mythology of the day.. very many truly unhappy mothers, many should never have been mothers. Underneath this mythology steamed sexualty.. affairs, the door to door salesmen, etc. I am of that generation from a respectable home, but am only sure one of my siblings is related through father to me. The first was mothers love child foisted on father. I am sure i am his but not hers. They called them 'stolen children' when a woman had a child out of wedlock, foisted upon any family member they could. It was not the GI's that caused the problem.. it was the women and the new war time freedom.

Despite my relentless efforts to reconcile, I find myself grappling with frustration and an inability to envision a future without him. Despite attempts to purge him from my mind, I remain haunted by his absence, feeling compelled to express my longing here.

      I’m so sick of seeing these types of asinine comments about horrible American GIs. Cultural differences apply. The US sent troops to protect Australia and the rest of the South Pacific to stop Japans advance. Japan was systematically destroying and capturing ALL British territory throughout the Pacific and terrorizing locals and enslaving them. Without the “appalling” Americans, Japan would have done it to the sweet, innocent Aussies, too. Would you have preferred that? If so, I’d suggest you speak to Koreans, Chinese, and Philippinos who still today despise the Japanese for the atrocities they committed. Have some perspective.
