Effigy of the Forgotten actually took several listens to click with me. I thought it was boring and generic at first (which, in retrospect, is like saying that Hamlet is cliched). But once it clicked, it REALLY clicked. One of the heaviest, most brutal albums in the history of mainstream metal. The hype is real for the new album. Suffocation for life 🤘
First listen thru, the first rack grabbed me but I quickly got bored. I’ve listened to that album maybe 20 times since and ur right, when it click it fucking CLICKS
@@do_yohomework Yesss same story with me... As an album, a singular experience and artistic statement, no other release in bdm comes close to the back to back memorable bangers through the entire runtime of Effigy It's still something special, even after spawning an entire subgenre which effectively copies and builds upon different moments on the album
Pierced From Within is easily my favourite Suffocation album, and the album that got me into playing bass. Right after it is Pinnacle of Bedlam and Blood Oath. Both solid albums
This may be a hot take but Souls to Deny is my favorite Suffo album. However both the singles have been amazing so the new one this november might top that.
I don't think it's a hot take at all. This guy exaggerated how different their albums actually are. Really, everything they have released is solid enough to justify being their best.
Despise The Sun is usually what I go back to if I want my fix of Suffocation. It's a perfect slab of brutal death that doesn't waste any time. All killer, no filler. Also, seeing them live was one of the best live experiences I've ever had.
I saw them live on the final day of the 2022 Northwest Terror Fest. At the time, they were touring in support of their live album and getting the new guy settled in Frank's former position. The show itself was a blast especially when the venue staff started throwing a bunch of beach balls and pool toys into the crowd while everyone was moshing about. At some point I got bopped in the head by a dolphin and a couple beach balls and it was so fun.
Suffocation don't often miss. I think they have an emotional undercurrent to a lot of their songs I think most people miss. Specially on the s/t and Pierced From Within. I think Pierced in particular is a great way to speak on emotional pain without dumbing down or softening anything. I don't know if they intended that. But I have always perceived it that way.
I don’t know why but …Of the Dark Light always stood out to me in their discography. It’s there in my top 3 Suffocation albums along with Effigy and Pierced.
I feel like I need to revisit Suffocation. I've listened to Pierced from Within a few years back out of curiosity, but I barely remember it. They were awesome when I saw them with Death to All this past March. Maybe I'm missing out?
1. Pierced from within 2. Effigy of the forgotten 3. Self titled 4. Blood oath 5. Pinnacle of Bedlam 6. Souls to deny 7. Of the dark light 8. Breeding the spawn
Suffocation is one of the best and most legendary death metal bands and is hugely influential to both brutal death metal and technical death metal. Here is my score of each album and I can’t wait to check out Hymns from the Apocrypha when it drops: Effigy of the Forgotten: 4.75/5 Breeding the Spawn: 3.5/5 Pierced from Within: 5/5 Souls to Deny: 4.25/5 Self-titled: 4.5/5 Blood Oath: 3.75/5 Pinnacle of Bedlam: 3/5 …Of the Dark Light: 2/5
I have no problem with the production of Breeding the Spawn. To me, the boxy guitar tone makes it sound like an old-school demo, and add to that Mike Smith's peerless drumming. That album, Pierced, and Blood Oath are my top 3 out of the Suffo discography.
Honestly i wasn’t too excited to hear new suffo since I really didn’t like the last album which was still with frank so I couldn’t imagine enjoying a new album without him either but man the new singles are actually pretty great, favorite album prob pierced btw but obviously goes back and forth with effigy
One of the gateway bands for me getting into Brutal Death Metal and still easily one of the very best. Frank is one of my favorite Vocalists in all of Extreme metal, Terrance Hobbs is one of my favorite guitarists in all of extreme metal. Mike Smith is one of my favorite metal drummers. Yeah Suffocation rules GOAT: Pierced from within S: Breeding the Spawn, Effigy (I get the complaints on the production for Breeding the Spawn, even though it doesn’t bother me too much but the collection of songs on here are amazing imo, slightly better production and this would arguably be my favorite) A: Souks to Deny B: Blood Oath, Pinnacle of Bedlam C: Suffocation Mediocre: Of the Dark Light
One time, Jammin' Jon and Necrotic Nick saw Suffocation with Cattle Decap. It was five years ago today, actually. The show was held in Detroit at a place called the Magic Stick (stupid name for a nightclub) and the duo was standing halfway back as being up front would be dangerous for their age now because the pit will fuck them up. Jammin' Jon looked to the side and there's this kid several rows in front of him. That kid stumbled into a table and he fell over the table and managed to get back up and sit down. 30 seconds later, that fan got up and stumbled toward the bathroom. As that fan was passing by the stairs leading to the smoking patio, just a few feet from the bathroom, that kid turned his head and projectile puked onto fans that were coming out of the smoking patio and then a guy grabbed him by the face and threw him into the bathroom. That was the last Jammin' Jon saw of that poor sap.
For me either Blood Oath and Effigy Of The Forgotten I like best. Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Spawn Of Possession, Dying Fetus really helped me through a tough mental health time around 2010-2011. My son was born in 2010 and he was such a difficult baby that it nearly broke me. He’s 13 now and he’s fuck’n awesome! Suffocation was one of the bands that got me through it all. Metal is definitely good for the health!🤘🏿
Never listened to them, but I will now definitely! I’m not a very big Death Metal Fan, but I sure like it when it’s done competent and good. Will tell ya which one I like the most! Have a great one🤘
I don't understand how people rag on Breeding the Spawn so much. Sure, the production is thin, trebly, and really just plain odd, but the same is true for so many other classic death metal albums that it doesn't make much sense to single it out. If you actually sit down and really LISTEN to the record with an even half-decent pair of headphones and tune out distractions, it's really not difficult at all to figure out what's going on. It contains some of the most sophisticated and clever composition/songwriting in Suffocation's discography. The musical content of the album is on par with Effigy and Pierced and is leagues ahead of any of Suffocation's post-reunion material (which isn't to say that I don't like any post-reunion material; I do, but you can definitely tell that they have not been able to find a second songwriter on the same level as Doug Cerrito). Considering how much death metal is out there that ACTUALLY sounds like it was recorded in a continuously flushing toilet, I've never understood how Breeding the Spawn gets so much crap.
If breeding the spawn had production like effigy or pierced no doubt it would be considered the best trilogy of albums out of any death metal band ever but it’s more like the little brother your mom says has to go with you when you hang with your friends , still love it tho
My favorite Suffocation albums are Effigy, Pierced, Breeding and the S/T. Pinnacle is probably the lrast favorite, only because it doesn't really have those "breakdown pit parts" like in songs such as Thrones Of Blood. I still likd it though. Generally to me, it's all good with their discography.
I am pretty picky when it comes to death metal because sometimes imo it can be derivative. However, suffocation is amazing and have a pretty good discography. Their debut literally set the foundation for brutal death metal and slam. I think suffocation could have influenced bands such as devourment and possibly cattle decapitation. Especially on devourment's earlier work as well as cattle decapitation's earlier work as well ya know. Anyways yeah suffocation to me is to death metal as beastie boys are to hip-hop, they are both equally important in their respective genres.
The self-titled was the first full Suffo album I heard, I remember ripping my buddy's CD from his book lol. I feel like it's very punchy and brutal with a nice modern polish and maybe their best introductory record for new listeners, 4/5 for me and probably my third favorite overall. I used to be a little disappointed with ...Of the Dark Light but it grew on me a lot, Your Last Breaths and Return to the Abyss are so money.
can the boys at suffocation re record breeding the spawn? please. this has some of my most favorite suffocation riffs but goddamn it's tough to listen to it without doing some heavy EQ shenanigans
Souls to Deny, i think it's a great album, (not up to the complexity or creativity of Effigy/Breeding/Pierced), but unfortunately the production ruins it a bit, and the contrast with Pierced is abysmal. Of all the albums that followed, I don't think there are any below the line of mediocrity... The last one is maybe the least interesting but I don't think it's bad at all
Probably my favorite death metal band. Here's my ranking with some short thoughts on the hot takes. 1. Effigy Of The Forgotten (absolute classic, the first 3 songs are untouchable) 2. Souls To Deny (really underrated) 3. Pierced From Within (awesome album but the rest of the album isn't QUITE as sick as the first 2 songs) 4. Of The Dark Light (super underrated) 5. Suffocation 6. Pinnacle Of Bedlam 7. Blood Oath 8. Breeding The Spawn (the songs are great but the production is so bad, would rather listen to the re-recorded versions)
Honestly, I think Breeding the Spawn is overhated. Yeah, the production isn’t as thick, but that’s really my only complaint. It means that the bass is much more prominent in the mix, which I enjoy. My ranking would be: 1: Pierced from Within (10/10) 2: Effigy of the Forgotten (9.5/10) 3: Breeding the Spawn (9/10) 4: Blood Oath (9/10) 5: Pinnacle of Bedlam (8/10) 6: Souls to Deny (7/10) 7: Suffocation (6.5/10) 8: …Of the Dark Light (5/10)
Gen Z didn't grow up with these albums. Makes me sad. At least they didn't have to go through those dark times when Suffo was broke up. That shit sucked. All anyone ever talked about during those years was Devourment and when is Suffo gonna reform. 😢

Complaining about production sound is something that shouldn't be a topic of discussion with getting into extreme metal. I haven’t heard all of Suffocation but for me Despise The Sun EP is the best thing I have heard from them. Good video Robert.
