Amtrak Dash-8 Locomotives

- All aboard! Come along as we take a look at Amtrak's Dash-8 locomotives in action! The P32-BWH, or "Dash-8" locomotives were built in 1991 by General Electric. They were essentially freight locomotives that were geared to run at passenger train speeds and equipped to provide electricity to the passenger cars. Today, these locomotives are primarily used as yard switchers and trailing units on some long distance Amtrak trains, but you can occasionally see them leading passenger trains still. This video takes a look at several of these locomotives in action in the western United States.

The horn on these things my god its amazing
I agree 👍
Me too
True
Ya 🙂😋
Inky
These are undoubtedly the best horns on any Amtrak locomotive. My favourites are
3:22 4:54 7:12
I'm just a passionate train lover. Love this video. Been watching them since l was a little girl. My dad and I sat and watched all day. Love the trains....miss my dad.
Runaway Union PACIFIC locomotive 🚂
Me too i was watching this when i was like 3 or 4 years old.

same man, my old man got me into my love of trains. when i hear one in the night i think of him.
It would be cool if Amtrak put one of the dash’s into the “Pepsi can” heritage scheme
01
That’d be cool to see. The Pepsi Can livery is a one-of-a-kind.
The horn is the best noise a human has ever heard.😢
I live in San Diego so I hear Amtrak all the time
9:12 Love that Southern Pacific carriage behind that dash 8
I like dash 8's leading
No other engine of Amtrak looks as good as dash 8's inspecially when hauling the superliner cars
Dash 8 is a amazing American train
7:12 That horn is satisfaction
5:43 is a total gem!
These are rare.
When Amtrak has freight, it will become more popular with this locomotive!
Back in the 90’s, when mail-carrying LDT’s were common, the Dash 8’s powered Material-Handling Boxcars
I love Amtrak
I've seen 3 Amtrak Dash-8s
503 (twice) 509 (Once]
Just got a Pepsi can to run on my 1990s SP in Oregon layout. Looks right at home on the Coast Starlight. Great video!
Fun fact: The dash 8s were slated to be retiree long ago (I think 2011) but they were kept because they were super reliable
It’s more beautiful than I expected
4:54 and 7:01 are great caches!
Coaster Fan please tell us in a video on what the difference of a P32ACDM dual mode with a P42DC Diesel electric locomotive
You can easily just google it. Plenty of good resources online and no need for a video. Real simple. A P42DC is diesel powered only and has 4,200 HP. A P32AC-DM runs on a diesel or has retractable 3rd rail shoes for operating in DC third rail territory. It has 3,200 HP.
I’ve seen a Boston mbta dash 8 also
They don't have any, never did.
Yes!
Another great video!!!! I love the Dash-8s on Amtrak, but you don't really see them so often since they are considered back up power right? But yes and also I know that you will soon be doing the Train Talk Episode on the Genesis locomotives but have you also planned on doing one on the Dash 8 but that's just me saying it...Once again great video and I love those sweet sounding K5LA horns!!!! :) +CoasterFan2105
Thanks! Yes, they are used quite rarely now. They used to appear regularly on the first northbound Pacific Surfliner train to Santa Barbara, but that ended a number of years ago.
Yeah I remember that too and also on a rare Pacific Surfliner Train with the Surfliner cars and the single-level cars with 90208 before the Veterans Wrap and I wonder if sometime in the future if they might use them like this in service again including Amtrak California......I really love their K5LA horns.... :) +CoasterFan2105
Another super video ! :)
9:12 beautiful NF 1PC K5la!
Can we get a part 2 ? And can we also get some footage of the new sc-44's down in Stockton California
If I get more video of Dash-8's, there will be a part 2! The first full SC-44 video will be next month featuring the Midwest ones. California should follow, hopefully later this year.
CoasterFan2105 ok thanks man
I love dash 8 locomotives and I like the dash 8 locomotive horn
its cool CoasterFan2105
Timing/scheduling on the Cresent route in the south could be more efficent. Train is late on a regular basis.
Nice video.
I love that k5la at 2052
Awsome video
These are long for passenger trains. Like I’ve never seen a passenger train so long before
Awesome! ☆☆
The dash 8 is sd70ace's brother
I like it
Give me more tours trains please
My son Justice loves dash 8
Everyone's gotta love the Dash 8. I saw one up close, but never in action. Unfortunately, I didn't see 506 in this video. Regardless, this was very well made. Thanks for sharing.
Someone said 506 was at 3:06
At 3:22, the horn of the Amtrak Dash 8 locomotive was actually pretty good! I love your videos, Coasterfan2105!
eww
Those dash 8 units are great locomotives. CSX just sold all theirs and many are now PRLX Leaser units
Didn't they also sell all of their AC6000CWs as well? I saw a whole bunch of them in Kansas City! (Including the one with the Seaboard Air line sticker)
MrBnsftrain CSX IS SHIT
Wide World of Trainstrean
They were sold to GECX. There is about 20 left.
CSX still has some Dash 8 widecabs on their roster. I saw a 7600 series leading a Q Train to Indianapolis just two weeks ago.
Dash-8 is probably my favorite locomotive in the world
I gotta say, 18:43 is a pretty sexy consist, all heavy duty locos, no monocoque designs. I actually approve 👍
The shot at 0:38 is so beautiful! This video brings some tears to my eyes and the sunset is beautiful. Enjoyed the video very much!
As of now (2018) are there still any Amtrak dash8s left in service?
As far as I know, all are still in service with the possible exception of 513 and one other one.
CoasterFan2105 ok
I rode on coaster 2105 the other day!! It was kind of bumpy, though.
I guess it's a good thing they're getting new equipment!
That shot at 4:57 was amazing! Especially with the echo of the K5LA and the sunset!
Is it just me or does this sound like a k5h or something 1:33
I know that was a beautiful horn show
The good thing is there are still going to be around until 2021!
Btw it's me *PsychicRailfanner*
Hello!
Hi Mike Armstrong
My Dad worked on the railroad I miss my Dad when I see trains I think of my Dad
Was he a UP engineer? There is something familiar about that name.
Dont be sad
Wait your dad is dead?
That’s really cool ;)
May he rest in peace 😢
16:08 Awesome to see a Dash 8 with a Canadian tuned K5H
Man, I really really hope I can see a Dash-8 sometime soon! Great video btw🙏🏾
Gotta love those beautiful GE’s and KILLER 90’s K5LA’s! Beautiful video!

The two Amtrak California locomotives are NOT Amtrak property, anymore - they belong to the California Department ofTransportation (CalTrans, for short...) (formerly Amtrak 500 and 501...)
That is correct, 2051 and 2052 were AMTK 501 and 502. I included 2 clips of 2052 because it used to be Amtrak and the trains that it was pulling are Amtrak trains, although funded by the state of California.
Thank you so much for this video. I live in Carolina now, far from any tracks,. I grew up in Galesburg, Ill. during the 60's and would ride my bike up to the station and watch all the trains and masses of passengers going to and fro. When the trains would stop I'd go out and stand on the walkway near the Locomotives just so I could listen to their low rumbling and feel the power shaking my clothes as they pulled away. I would get so excited from watching and listening to them, AND of course waving to the engineer!!! I'm 62 years old, and today you have given me that excitement that I hadn't felt in well over 50 years... Thank you again....
Thank you very much for the comment, Jim! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Jim Hatch awesome! I'm 12 and I live down the street from some tracks and I love watching the trains go by and hearing the horns!
BNSF_Lover , You're just the right age my young friend. Watch and listen to them, dream about where they came from and where they're going to. Stand and watch them go by, carrying people to so many different destinations. Enjoy your railroad dreams, but,,, just remember the most important part of loving trains,,, stay back a good safe distance from them, and that love of trains will always be with you no matter where you are. Stay safe my friend.🤗
I certainly will. I have a few ancestors who worked for union Pacific, but sadly never got to meet them. I have some special connections with some railroad workers on the BNSF, UP, and Amtrak. The first thing I do when I see a train is think, "Just imagine the amount of time it takes to build these behemoths and how technology in these machines, how far it has come." God has blessed us with these monsters, not only to help our economy, but for great entertainment like this video. Stay safe my friend while watching these behemoths!

Amtrak's Dash-8 will always be my favorite diesel locomotive
TrainMan95 dude mine to
I’d have to go with the Genesis units, they’re unique, workhorses, sound incredible, have amazing power under the hood, aerodynamic, and most importantly, American!
My personal favorites, the EMD F- series (Yes, like Ford!), are a true rarity nowadays some 48 years after the last one left LaGrange.
Mine too
Same
I miss seeing dash 8s in the paint scheme like #509 pulling the southwest chief through Arizona when I was a kid. I also miss seeing the f40s on the sunset limited
Alternate title: “20 minutes of nonstop K5LA action”
Hahaha, I may have to save that title for another video!
CoasterFan2105 Yes! Make it happen!
it would appear you don't like the sound of the 12 cylinder 7FDL engine? But that is what makes the Dash 8 unique. If you hide it with the K5LA blows it sounds like every other locomotive on railfanning videos. Other than the constant horn sound, your video is absolutely great and I really enjoyed it, so don't take offence from my comment
Caltrain912 ol
Caltrain912, No, 20 minutes of nonstop RS5T action.
The Alaska Railroad did the same thing with the 2 F40s they bought from Amtrak , pull the power unit out and make it A baggage unit.
Dash-8's mean more 90's K5LAs!

It's funny you should say that, that's what last Friday's new episode of Train Talk was about!
I just Ride the coaster commuter train
this video is the shit for me, props to you on capturing out of all Dash 8's which are only 20, video is amazing
Thanks! I always like seeing the Dash-8s
1:43 pre-wayside memories :)
1:44 man that’s a great horn
Yeah
These were an excellent replacement locomotive for the F40s, wished they stayed in the system longer.
My uncle works for BNSF from Richmond CA to Fresno CA I always wanted to go with him he also rides Amtrak this is memories of him and amtrak
Awesome. That shot at 4:54 is my all-time favorite by you. Love 509 in that phase IV. Great upload, Mike!
Thanks, Spencer! It was really neat to see 509 for that short time it was regularly on Surfliner trains.

I have never seen one in person.I only have seen them in CSX and UP paint. I saw 1 BNSF in the midst of a CSX train too.
Oh, my gosh. that 80 mph catch of the dash 8 at 5:52 was legendary, by the way, Im going out to Auburn, Washington, tomorrow, Decemner 29th. Hope to see you there.
Sorry, 5:51
you also posted a dash 8 on your Instagram!
I hope trainz a new era gets a DLC of the dash 8 one day (yes I know there maybe some websites that have downloadable models however downloading models is hard for me as I’m not a huge computer guy and I can’t fined anyone to help me and most of the good websites that sell models have them behind a paywall)
Pepsi can dash 8s are my favorite Amtrak units, too bad they no longer retain that paint scheme
Amtrak trans fast gates down hom gates down gates like Video like video weather hot 🥵 weather tracks2 over bridge night day get
The 506 is currently in new Orleans
Cool! Are there ant recent videos or photos of it?
CoasterFan2105 I’ll be driving thru the city this weekend, I’ll be happy to see if it’s still there
At 5:00 where is this place / building? Thanks
That is in downtown San Diego just north of the train station.
GREAT footage mike! I miss 509 in the Diet Pepsi can scheme, scenes that can never be repeated!
Thank, Dean! It was really cool to see 509 in that scheme for all those years!
It's Phase IV, but most actually call it Crystal Pepsi.
Super nice!!! Great camera work and wonderful scenery as well. Really liked the shoreline shots. Thanks for sharing. 🚂
Thank you very much, Jim!
1:30 i love the horn on this one
HOLD ON! I THOUGHT THE PACIFIC PARLORS WERE RETIRED YEARS AGO
They were retired this February. The shots of the Coast Starlight are from a few years ago.
Great VIDEO Mike. Are you going do a video about Amtrak NPCU'S.
Thanks! I may!
At 09:24 what Amtrak train is this?
That is a Pacific Surfliner train with single level equipment and a privately owned rail car.
Awesome Shots I Like Dash 8's
The dash 8 was on the coast starlight
CaliRAIL They usually are. The Genesis units are beginning to tap out so it's not an uncommon sight to see a Dash 8 on the Starlight. They're also kept specifically as backup power in LA with 503/507 doing occasional switching duties.
Blackbird Gaming Sorry I didn’t specify. I saw it leading
Blackbird Gaming it was rare to see

Ah I don't normally see any of those locomotives around we're my grandparents live they live near the tracks but I still love your vids kept up the great up
Thanks, Kenny! Will do!
It's a very powerful and cool locomotive 👍
How common are Dash 8 go lead on the surfliner
There was a time where it was happening pretty regularly. Now, it virtually never happens.
Chicago Rail Productions It's just as-needed, which right now is pretty much never due to the abundance of Genesis units in Surfliner service and the impending Charger delivery.
Never disappointed in your videos. Love ALL your work
It’s rare to see a dash 8
I WANT TO SEE THOSE DASH UNITS ON MY TRAIN!!!! The Amtrak Texas Eagle. Hey why does the dash unit don’t have a 3rd generation K5LA horn?
I guess its because Amtrak wanted their later Dash - 8 models to have a better sounding horn. And frankly. I would see why they would do that
Some of them do now. It just depends on what happens when they go through their heavy maintenance cycles at Beech Grove.
@@CoasterFan2105 Amtrak 2051, 2052, 504, 506, 507, 508, 509, 516, and 517 have their original K5LA's. 503 received an ex Chessie System K5LA sometime in the mid 2000's. 500, 505, 510, 512, and 518 have hybrid K5LA's. 514 and 519 have raised letters. It's Like A BNSF B40-8W
Very similar!
I do agree, but this is a Widecab, so this is basically the B40-8W, but equipped with head end power, so put an H at the end. And then it's a passenger locomotive, so it'll be called the P-B40-8WH, and has a 3200 hp range, so then it would be called the P32-8BWH! And there you have it!

The horn sounds like new jersey transit like the squeak at the end.
I just shake my head when I read all you fans comments about these miserable machines. Your favorite?? I was an LA crew base engineer when we got these things. I don't care what you people call these things, we engineers called them trash 8s. They were ordered by the Santa Feces but refused. Some asshole went to AMT and talked some other asshole into paying $1.75 million each for them. When you use the HEP, you lose 1,100 hp. You only have 2,200 hp for traction. With that computer, there no accurate pin point precision control of the thing. In dynamic or power, the amps wondered all over the dial. Drove me nuts. Slow for a speed restriction, and it took forever to regain track speed. I was on the Desert Wind regularly and it added another 45 minutes to the running time. If that wasn't bad enough, they bought a fleet of those P42 techno turds instead of F59 engines. I'm now retired, and I don't miss it.
Yes, I have heard that they were not very fun to operate. I have a few friends that have run them and the comments are often the same. Very rough riding and you lose a lot of power when they're running HEP. They are neat from a historical perspective, but they really never were designed to be passenger units. They were freight units that were modified to fill a gap during a major motive power transition.
Nice video. Dash 8s are awesome. I'm getting one on HO scale.
Thanks, Nate! That's cool! Which paint scheme?
Nate Jackson They're really not all everyone thinks they are. At full HEP load they only produce 1685 traction horsepower and they are really quite slow to accelerate.
