I have been very successful using conductive paint on both 08 an City of London locos. You do have to thoroughly prepare the hubs so the paint will stick and apply multiple layers. Ensure each layer is fully dry between coats. Good luck, a great channel btw.
Thanks, that gives me some encouragement to try the conductive paint. My stalling 08 seems the best candidate if I don't make good on the threat to permanently shackle it to another chassis.
I’m currently building a 3-rail layout. For the cities, castles and 8F’s maybe the solution would be to retain the 2 rail pick up on the loco, but just wire it to the chassis instead of the motor. Plunger pickups in the tender would deal with the centre rail. I recently picked up a 2-rail 08 very cheaply and wonder if I could fit the 3-rail pick up while retaining the 2-rail one underneath. With both pickups through a suitable switch (DPST?) it might be possible to have 2 or 3-rail capability as required…

That's what I intend to do now that I've had a bit more time to think about it. Good luck with the 08. There is not much room to move under there.
Cant wait for part two :)
I think I should say something about the rest of the range.
