I think I need to clarify two things about the Eversolo BEFORE our follow-up video later in the week. First, while the A8 has what appear to be 2 HDMI ports, one in and one out, it is NOT a multi-channel or home theater device. The Eversolo will not pass through nor send a video signal to your TV. It is also a stereo-only product, meaning you cannot send a native multi-channel or surround sound signal to its HDMI ARC/eARC input and get surround sound. If you connect this to your TV (like I did), you must make sure your TV is outputting PCM Stereo via its HDMI ARC/eARC port to work with the A8. Many TVs do this automatically, so there's no need to worry, but if yours doesn't, that's the setting to check for.
The HDMI port found with the A8's digital outputs is known as an IIS (or i2S) connection. While it uses a form of an HDMI-style termination, it is NOT an HDMI connection in the traditional sense. Apologies if I was unclear about this or simply glossed over it without further explanation. This is a relatively new way to connect digital components, such as a streamer or transport, to an outboard DAC, but it is not yet standardized*. (*source: Wikipedia) PS Audio and a few other companies use this digital connection method on their devices rather than the older-school method, which was RJ-45 or similar. The A8 supports DSD and PCM output through this IIS/i2S HDMI-looking port. Like the HDMI input, though, the HDMI-looking IIS/i2S port DOES NOT support video and is NOT INTENDED for home theater use. Hope this clears up any and all confusion, and I apologize for any misunderstandings. We will no doubt discuss this topic and more in greater detail in our follow-up video.

Yep, I love my Eversolo DMP-A6 with the LPS upgrade as just a streamer. It plays native Apple Music lossles, hi-res lossless.
I use an external r2r Denafrips Pontus II 12th dac and Denafrips Iris 12th (ddc) and Cardas Parsec RCA interconnects.
Parasound 2100 preamp for the home theater bypass and L/R balance to my Arcam AVR5 7.4.4 setup. As good as the Eversolo DMP-A6's volume knob sounded, the Parasound's volume knob sounds better.

@robinsonbrand : This might have been mentioned elsewhere, but since I deem it important: The DMP-A6 outputs MultiChannel 5.1 via it‘s HDMI out. This is for multi-layer SACD‘s , which I play vie SMB from either PC or NAS. It also outputs DTS ( CD ). For the SACD, you can select the 2.0 or 5.1 stream on the DMP-A6‘s touch screen. As far as I can see, the A8 does not offer this.

I have the A6 Master edition which I have also upgraded the internal power supply, I had an A8 on trial to compare, as I do not use the in-built DACs (I use a Chord m-scaler/hugo TT2 combo) the difference is not easily heard, there is a tiny difference, but I was not able to blind A/B them. Also, the latest firmware for the A6 now includes the same fully suited functions as the A8, so DSP, PQM and EQ with multiple settings for all inputs is brilliant. All I can say is a big thank you to Eversolo, A6, A6ME and A8 are just fantastic. for reference I have a Michi x3 and B&W 804 D4s downstream of my chord combo DAC 🙂 a set up made in heaven !

@@CohibaJoe using an external DAC , as I do with the Hugo TT2 and M-scaler combo, so using the A6 ME or A8 as just digital carriers, there is really no major difference, based on my hearing through my quite revealing system. If you use the internal DACs there is a noticable difference, the A8 is much better, however the A8 internal DAC vs the A6 ME with new PS and external DAC Chord Hugo TT2/m-scaler, the A6 in much better.

@jamiermathlin Do you connect to the DAC via spdif or usb? I have an A6 (not master) connected to my Benchmark DAC through spdif as I use the usb connection on the Dac for my Melco NAS. I understand the A6 controls the clocking on spdif and the Benchmark for the USB. So, I’m wondering if I should upgrade to the A6 master to get the benefits of the better clocks.

@@Surreyg This is a good point, I have tried both spdif (TOSlink) and USB and the truth is that TOSlink is a much better sound when connecting from the A6ME to my Chord Electronics M-Scaler (which is connected to the HugoTT2 via twin coax) compared to the USB, and it is not a small difference, I would estimate 10-15% improvement in smoothness and clarity. Trust me I was surprised when I tried this. I am not sure if the improvement comes from the A6ME output or the M-Scaler input, but the difference is noticeable !

      @jamiermathlin 10 месяцев назад +1

@@mrpmj00 As you are using an external DAC, I would suggest that there is little improvement between the A6 and A8 when just being used as a digital carrier. Also with the new software update for the A6, bringing the A8 features, I think the A6 is a solid performer !!

I love the simplicity of the setup compared to previous separate setups I have had. The sound quality is excellent. The total set up was 6500$ for a great midfi system. Hi Kristi and Andrew! I purchased the DMP-A8 when it first hit the US market last year. So far, it has been fantastic. I took the leap and spent the extra money based on some early reviews. I now use it as my dedicated media hub and utilize it's internal DAC. It's that good. I use the XLR outputs directly to a pair of monoblock amplifiers and a powered subwoofer via the RCA outputs. It has superb sound quality (dare I say audiophile high-end level sound?), super flexible in it's usability with a myriad of inputs and outputs. It is so good, I removed my separate Denafrips Ares II DAC and Denafrips Hades preamplifer and use the Eversolo as a unified source/preamp instead. The screen and it's multitude of options and VU meters are great. The internal DSP and PEQ has been a life saver with my difficult-to-control room acoustics. The A8 is built exceptionally well and feels and sounds like the asking price. In general, the internal streamer is quite good, but I have just a few nits to pick. It is a little sluggish scrubbing or switching through tracks. The drill down in streaming menus and accessing existing playlists and favorites can be a little clunky. I previously had the Bluesound Node, while the A8 sounds better, the Node's menu format may be just a little bit easier to operate. All in all though, this thing rocks...highly recommended.

Full disclosure, I don't care how Eversolo's marketing team or people conduct themselves, as they (at least in my experience) are a little heavy-handed with their wants/needs, which is a shame because their products CAN and DO stand on their own. I bought the A8 at retail instead of putting up with them. Had it not performed I would've returned it, but seeing as how it did (and then some) I paid the credit card bill and this baby is MINE! Glad I did, too, as it's harder to get your hands on than unobtainium.

The Eversolo doesn't have an internal amp, so the character of the amps I have in-house shines through when I use the A8. The NAD gear uses types of Class D (or hybrid amps) that I just don't like --but that's just me and my opinion. When paired with the 8300XP, I get Levinson vibes. When paired with the A35.2 from Primare, it was more reminiscent of my Krell or Rotel amps back in the day.

Thank you for the great review! I was wondering if you’d pick an Eversolo A8 over a Cambridge Audio MXN10 + Eversolo Z8 DAC if the evaluation metric would be stereo sound quality or stereo listening experience (no matter how subjective this is)? Is it still the case if you “normalize” sound quality with cost (A8 is ~2k vs ~1.2k for the combo)? This would be connected to a Marantz Cinema 50 driving a pair of Klipsch 8000f-ii + klipsch rp-1400 sw (in stereo).

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  10 месяцев назад +2

Thank you for your support, to answer your question, I'm afraid my answer will also take simplicity into account rather than be based solely on sound quality. In this instance, given all the extra functionality you get with the A8 OVER the Z8 DAC, I would save up in order to spend a little more and just get the A8 over the two-box solution you've laid out. The DACs (to me) inside the A8 are superior to the Z8 and I prefer the Apple Music integration with the Eversolo versus the lack-thereof with the Cambridge. And I say this having had (or currently having) both setups you're cross shopping. The A8 is the answer to many of my hifi questions, and now that I have it, I'm saying goodbye to a number of redundant products in my home. Hope this helps! Thanks again!

    •  10 месяцев назад

By “normaling with cost”, I mean taking into account the price difference ** if ** this even makes sense or can be done reasonably in this product category (tbh I’m not sure about it)

    •  10 месяцев назад

Thank you! Yes, I totally agree those (simplicity, screen, etc.) are important factors And, yes, I planned to count those in as well. I had been leaning towards A8 even before your review, but somehow I was under the false impression (and I know this could be super subjective as well) that the DAC chips in Z8 are the superior ones. Having the opposite true, it really makes A8 a hard to beat product. Thanks again!

At the end, as an audiophile in a on-going journey I am building my system to my specific budget and I cannot help to wonder what if saving for the next tier would actually be rewarding. Of course value is a completely subjetive variable but ultimately it serves a lot that although you may have subjective taste's, you do have experience enough to discern between a wide range of products that we usually do not have the budget, availabily or time to do audition or experience. Thanks again, Regards from Mexico!

At 4:57 we see the selection for using both XLR and RCA outputs at the same time. If you select both you lose most of the low bass from the XLRs. I thought there was a crossover doing this or something in the DSP/EQ doing it but there wasn't. Turned down the vol on my subs and the mains had no bass using both outputs. I switched back and forth for 2 days and somehow the little SMSL D6S budget DAC sounds a little better driving amps directly via XLR than the A8.

Hey Andrew and Kristi. I'm looking to buy curtains to block off a hallway to reduce the echo in my open concept house. Do you have any suggestions for what fabric to use, or any specific curtains that you have used? Thanks!

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews

At the moment we have West Elm european linen but we are changing those out soon. We have also ordered from this brand: bit.ly/493o3EI. They make a good product at a reasonable cost. Warning curtains are expensive!
I recommend going with a heavier fabric with blackout lining and ordering an extra panel than you think you'll need, which will further help reduce the echo.
There is another brand of curtains that we are planning to order; however, until I receive their product, I'm going to withhold that info.
      Thanks for the support!

Love my A8 I received 2 months ago. Good break in was about 100 hours. Agree with Andrew on his review. Last firmware update did not make it Roon Ready, I emailed with Eversolo customer support and Roon won't get to the A8 for another several weeks. If you use Roon it will only play airplay at AC3 format. I use Tidal connect and the DMP A8 rocks the sound. A8 I2S is compatible with Pontus II 12th Ann edition. This box is incredible value, just buy it.

I get it. Some products have functionality to check a box. I've got 3 DACs in my HT setup (TV, BD player, Yamaha HT Receiver). Only the receivers DAC actually gets used. It's nice when a product that has multiple functionalities actually does them all well. Streamer ✓ DAC ✓ Preamp ✓. And to me this level of performance is commensurate with the price. You wanna better DAC, buy the A6, but your gonna spend more or at the very least take up more space. I hate when people discount space (or in this case, saving it) as a commodity. To most (arguably all) consumers size, looks, ease of use, cost and the Almighty sound quality all matter. If you can check all those boxes, you've got a real winner.

I'm also curious about how M66 and the A8 compare. From what I've heard the M66 has even more features with DIRAC live, a phono stage, etc. However, regarding sound quality, they both use state-of-the-art DACs and implementation that measure completely transparent, so I doubt there should be any difference between them.

I loved 'trash talk' and the idea of a different follow-up format - but - you might want to consider that old format on the reviews was actually what differentiated your channel. I valued Kristi's views on the product from the perspective of how my partner would feel about 'living' with it just as much as Andrew's product evaluation and comparisons. Putting that section in was genius, makes what you do unique and added some welcome unscripted opinion and humour (see recent rants on NAD, Diamond Series style bypass and Kristi's take on power amps or the universal remotes in the 21st century). As entertaining as these moments are, they also publicly underline your independence and credibility in the space. Keep the old format and get trash talk? Pretty please 🤣

I lived with the A8 for several weeks as I awaited service on my Modwright tube stage moded CXN. For the first week I used it as an all-in-one and I was left there quite unimpressed, but then when I disengaged the preamp/volume control, in favor of the passive volume stage of my Van Alstine SET 120 control, the performance improved quite substantially, leading me to conclude the preamp/volume control of the A8 significantly lowers the ceiling of its DAC/Streamer performance. I'd give it an A as a DAC/Streamer in its price class, but a C as an all-in-one front end, so just consider that depending on how you plan on using it.

The volume output varies based on how you configure the outputs. If you isolate RCA or XLR versus leave them both on. Did you try that? Also, applying or turning on the DSP functionality lowers the output by 5dB in order to preserve headroom as some may choose to boost certain frequencies versus cut them.

I had the Eversolo DMP-A6 for probably 7 months and I love it. I have Parasound JC2BP preamp and A21+ power amp and Focal Sopra 1's in a medium size room. . I used the A6 as a DAC and streamer. I had my eyes on the DMP-A8 since it first came out. The HDMI earc, more digital inputs were something i wanted. All the reviewers was saying the preamp was extremely good as well. After seeing your review i ordered one thinking i will could sell the A6 and JC2BP preamp and that would cover the cost plus have some extra cash. The A8 as a preamp was really good if i used the DSP to make the sound a bit warmer to match the Parasound. But unfortunately the drop in gain was dramatic and I would have to have the volume on the A8 to -25db and have the gain on the power amp maxed out to get any kind of loud music ( 85-90db ). I normally had the power amp at half gain with the Parasound preamp and still have lots more headroom if i wanted really loud for movies. If i didn't have a 300wpc power amp, it probably wouldn't really work well as a preamp if someone liked loud movies and music. Especially if you had low sensitive speakers. Ill keep it as a preamp for a while and see how it works as my daily driver. I may have Parasound JC2BP for sale if someone is looking for one. Lol.

Hi, can you also explore a subwoofer addition you mentioned (DSP settings, HPF/LPF etc), thanks !@@andrewrobinsonreviews

I have an Denafrips Ares II dac. Would you get the A8 and use its internal dac or use an A6 connected to the Ares II? Yes I would need to buy the A6. Really looking forward to the new Kristi's Komments..........😀

I have the Ares 12th, and actually like the A8's internal DAC better (connected through USB or I2S with good cables). I usually prefer R2R DACs, but the chips in the A8 are really good!

Another great review! Can you clarify how you are connecting the A8 to your Apple TV and can you play it through the Sony AVR while still getting its impressive sound benefits?

AppleTV ➡ Sony X90L HDMI ARC/eARC ➡ EverSolo HDMI input. As for the Sony AVR question, you can't connect the Eversolo to the Sony as a preamp, but you could use it as a streamer/DAC into the AVR.

is the sound quality way apart or small, comparing the MiniDSP SHD to DMP A8?
only focussing on the DAC conversion and analog preamp output section.
    ?
    thanks.

    How would you compare
    the Eversolo DMP-A8 to
    the DMP-A6 Master Edition?
    And does the DMP-A6 have
    the same CD rip function?

Do you have a review for the Classe Delta Stereo and Pre, shown in the video, upcoming or in the near future? Thanks. Great channel

I would really love to have something like this, but the problem is, there is no headphone connection. That is the only problem I have with this device. But it really looks stunning!

I added a Aune S17 to my system. At $700 it still keeps the cost well below competing preamps. Generally the installed headphone amps aren’t the best anyway.

Does it always convert the analogue input to digital? Or only when you use the DSP?

There are actually a myriad of ways to handle the incoming signal. I'd have to double-check the manual, but if you leave EQ and DSP off, I believe no changeover or conversion takes place.

Looking forward to your take on the Classe pre/stereo power combo. It's funny, but I consider this combo to be something of a high-end bargain because I've consistently preferred them to much pricier gear I've home tested. But I guess you might already be tilting in a somewhat different direction! So long as your opinions are honest (which I believe they are) I don't mind some sacred cows being sacrificed...

Hey Andrew. Great channel! Would you recommend the A8 as a preamp to the audiolab 8300xp? Any issues (eg with volume control /gain matching etc) encountered with this direct setup? Thx

Fantastic review as always. Do you think the next step here is one with an integrated amp so it's an all in one?
