I think I need to clarify two things about the Eversolo BEFORE our follow-up video later in the week. First, while the A8 has what appear to be 2 HDMI ports, one in and one out, it is NOT a multi-channel or home theater device. The Eversolo will not pass through nor send a video signal to your TV. It is also a stereo-only product, meaning you cannot send a native multi-channel or surround sound signal to its HDMI ARC/eARC input and get surround sound. If you connect this to your TV (like I did), you must make sure your TV is outputting PCM Stereo via its HDMI ARC/eARC port to work with the A8. Many TVs do this automatically, so there's no need to worry, but if yours doesn't, that's the setting to check for.
The HDMI port found with the A8's digital outputs is known as an IIS (or i2S) connection. While it uses a form of an HDMI-style termination, it is NOT an HDMI connection in the traditional sense. Apologies if I was unclear about this or simply glossed over it without further explanation. This is a relatively new way to connect digital components, such as a streamer or transport, to an outboard DAC, but it is not yet standardized*. (*source: Wikipedia) PS Audio and a few other companies use this digital connection method on their devices rather than the older-school method, which was RJ-45 or similar. The A8 supports DSD and PCM output through this IIS/i2S HDMI-looking port. Like the HDMI input, though, the HDMI-looking IIS/i2S port DOES NOT support video and is NOT INTENDED for home theater use. Hope this clears up any and all confusion, and I apologize for any misunderstandings. We will no doubt discuss this topic and more in greater detail in our follow-up video.

Yep, I love my Eversolo DMP-A6 with the LPS upgrade as just a streamer. It plays native Apple Music lossles, hi-res lossless.
I use an external r2r Denafrips Pontus II 12th dac and Denafrips Iris 12th (ddc) and Cardas Parsec RCA interconnects.
Parasound 2100 preamp for the home theater bypass and L/R balance to my Arcam AVR5 7.4.4 setup. As good as the Eversolo DMP-A6's volume knob sounded, the Parasound's volume knob sounds better.

@robinsonbrand : This might have been mentioned elsewhere, but since I deem it important: The DMP-A6 outputs MultiChannel 5.1 via it‘s HDMI out. This is for multi-layer SACD‘s , which I play vie SMB from either PC or NAS. It also outputs DTS ( CD ). For the SACD, you can select the 2.0 or 5.1 stream on the DMP-A6‘s touch screen. As far as I can see, the A8 does not offer this.

I bought the A8 a couple months ago and I have it running into the Schitt Tyr monoblocks to my Magnipan LRS+’s. I use the rca out into a svs PB2000. I love the simplicity of the setup compared to previous separate setups I have had. The sound quality is excellent. The total set up was 6500$ for a great midfi system. So far the Eversolo A8 is my favorite hifi component I have owned in 20 years in this hobby. Hopefully it remains reliable.

Thanks for the review Andrew! :) I heard Eversolo DMP A6 as a transport paired with Gustard R26 R2R DAC at a friend's house. It was very impressive. The Gustard R26 is an incredibly good DAC, airy, musical, analog, smooth, but at the same time fast and very dynamic, with a huge sound stage. I hope I managed to do a test with my friend comparing Eversolo A6+ Gustard vs Eversolo A8.

Hi Kristi and Andrew! I purchased the DMP-A8 when it first hit the US market last year. So far, it has been fantastic. I took the leap and spent the extra money based on some early reviews. I now use it as my dedicated media hub and utilize it's internal DAC. It's that good. I use the XLR outputs directly to a pair of monoblock amplifiers and a powered subwoofer via the RCA outputs. It has superb sound quality (dare I say audiophile high-end level sound?), super flexible in it's usability with a myriad of inputs and outputs. It is so good, I removed my separate Denafrips Ares II DAC and Denafrips Hades preamplifer and use the Eversolo as a unified source/preamp instead. The screen and it's multitude of options and VU meters are great. The internal DSP and PEQ has been a life saver with my difficult-to-control room acoustics. The A8 is built exceptionally well and feels and sounds like the asking price. In general, the internal streamer is quite good, but I have just a few nits to pick. It is a little sluggish scrubbing or switching through tracks. The drill down in streaming menus and accessing existing playlists and favorites can be a little clunky. I previously had the Bluesound Node, while the A8 sounds better, the Node's menu format may be just a little bit easier to operate. All in all though, this thing rocks...highly recommended.

Full disclosure, I don't care how Eversolo's marketing team or people conduct themselves, as they (at least in my experience) are a little heavy-handed with their wants/needs, which is a shame because their products CAN and DO stand on their own. I bought the A8 at retail instead of putting up with them. Had it not performed I would've returned it, but seeing as how it did (and then some) I paid the credit card bill and this baby is MINE! Glad I did, too, as it's harder to get your hands on than unobtainium.

At 4:57 we see the selection for using both XLR and RCA outputs at the same time. If you select both you lose most of the low bass from the XLRs. I thought there was a crossover doing this or something in the DSP/EQ doing it but there wasn't. Turned down the vol on my subs and the mains had no bass using both outputs. I switched back and forth for 2 days and somehow the little SMSL D6S budget DAC sounds a little better driving amps directly via XLR than the A8.

Thank you Andrew. I completely agree on the comparisons between products with significant delta's in price point. At the end, as an audiophile in a on-going journey I am building my system to my specific budget and I cannot help to wonder what if saving for the next tier would actually be rewarding. Of course value is a completely subjetive variable but ultimately it serves a lot that although you may have subjective taste's, you do have experience enough to discern between a wide range of products that we usually do not have the budget, availabily or time to do audition or experience. Thanks again, Regards from Mexico!

I've had the A8 for a couple of days and I'm very happy I returned it. It's a great build and I like all the possibilities. But I don't like the sound it produces at all. It sounds flat, thin and harsh. It made me lose the fun of listening to my music. Firstly I swapped the A8 with my current dac. Later I connected my dac to the Xlr input of the A8. So I have also tested the pre amp of the A8. It hardly added or changed anything positive compared to when my dac is directly connected to my power amp.

I wonder why Eversolo simply didn't put a fully surround capable chipset in the A8 since the marketing implies streaming as well as video usage. Nobody cares about PCM surround any longer.

I valued Kristi's views on the product from the perspective of how my partner would feel about 'living' with it just as much as Andrew's product evaluation and comparisons. Putting that section in was genius, makes what you do unique and added some welcome unscripted opinion and humour (see recent rants on NAD, Diamond Series style bypass and Kristi's take on power amps or the universal remotes in the 21st century). As entertaining as these moments are, they also publicly underline your independence and credibility in the space. Keep the old format and get trash talk? Pretty please 🤣

I always ask this question and never get an answer. How are these dedicated music streamers any better than, say, a Shield TV running Plex or JellyFin with full bandwidth into a traditional AVR? Don't have to worry about onboard DACs since the connection is straight digital. And you can't really ask for better than your actual TV in terms of displaying metadata and high-res artwork (plus you're already using a decent remote to control everything). I mean, I look at these devices -- they're definitely nice-looking and I can easily see them in my EC but I feel like I already have this functionality in a potentially better and simpler incarnation.

As someone who owns the classe delta pre and stereo amp, I can say it’s a very fussy duo to setup. First, you have to run in xlr. RCA only gives you about 50% of the capability. Secondly, you have to have the rca plugs in rca inputs.
Next, in order to get the true capability of the pre you have to change settings so there is only one input and output on at a time. Then you have to make sure the pre is in bypass mode. If it’s not in bypass then the dsp will be engaged and it will sound like digital trash
Lastly, the dac in it sucks. Add a dedicated dac to it and you will see how truly expansive and wrap around soundstage it is capable of

Eversolo came and mopped the floor with the competition, especially in it's price range. I've had the A6 and got the A8 for the i2s output and analog preamp capabilities.
NAD isn't comparable because they're always built with trash parts the folks at the factory have found laying around - always somewhere C-tier capacitors that guarantee a short lifespan, conveniently placed close to hot heatsinks to amplify the effect. NAD, Cambridge Audio and Audiolab are notorious for this. I've seen a dead Audiolab 8200CD with about 20-30% of the cheap chinese PSU caps already blown open at the top, it's nuts.
I've opened and thoroughly inspected the A8 and it's a league above in terms of build quality, 'worst' parts I've seen in an Eversolo are Samyoung electrolytics which are robust and been used by SoTM for example for many years while NAD is mostly stuffed with C-Tier stuff like Lelon and the likes.

I lived with the A8 for several weeks as I awaited service on my Modwright tube stage moded CXN. For the first week I used it as an all-in-one and I was left there quite unimpressed, but then when I disengaged the preamp/volume control, in favor of the passive volume stage of my Van Alstine SET 120 control, the performance improved quite substantially, leading me to conclude the preamp/volume control of the A8 significantly lowers the ceiling of its DAC/Streamer performance. I'd give it an A as a DAC/Streamer in its price class, but a C as an all-in-one front end, so just consider that depending on how you plan on using it.

The volume output varies based on how you configure the outputs. If you isolate RCA or XLR versus leave them both on. Did you try that? I have to politely disagree with one major part of this review. The part where you say this replaces a true preamp. I own the A8 and I made that mistake. I sold my musical fidelity M8Xi for a Parasound jc5 and thought my eversolo a8 would be fine on its own. I was COMPLETELY incorrect. The music was flat, dull and lifeless. I had been aware before I did this I could end up going backwards in sound quality but hoped it was just paranoia from giving up a very good preamp. I then purchased a Prima Luna evo400 preamp and the sound is better than ever. Eversolo A8 to the preamp- to the amp is the right combination. The A8 is an amazing streamer and incredible DAC but please do not use this as a preamp if you have a revealing system. Plug it into a preamp and let the preamp smooth out that beautiful sound the A8 can make. FWIW almost all my speakers are based on andrew’s recommendations. BW 805 D4 signatures and also bought Martin logan xtf 100 and matching surrounds for home theater. So I do take his opinions incredibly seriously, however I can say for a fact owning this device will be amazing so long as you don’t pretend it can act as a true hifi preamp. It will not be good enough. Trust me as I learned an extremely expensive lesson on this issue. Not critiquing the overall review, just the point about the preamp, as that will without question harm people if they do this without testing before they sell their gear.

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  6 месяцев назад +7

It's difficult for me to try and diagnose what you are responding to when using the A8 as a pre. My immediate thought is that you may be responding to the change in your amplifier. Another possibility is that you may have discovered that you don't prefer a more neutral sound- which is fine. Regarding the lifeless, dull, and flat remarks -- the A8 is a more neutral preamp and based on your preference for the Prima Luna, a tube-based preamp, it seems like you prefer a preamp with more tone or color. Additionally, there may be an output gain mismatch with your current amplifier. In that case, you may find that you have to increase the volume on the A8 compared to what you are used to on the M8xi. I know if you engage the A8's DSP functionality, it will automatically curb the EverSolo's dynamic range by 5 dB. This can be disengaged or adjusted. All that said, the speakers you own are more revealing, and it's possible that you just got a little too much of a good thing, and the Prima Luna helps soften things up.
Again, hard to fully access without being in your room but those are my initial thoughts. In the end, I'm glad to know you found something that works for you.

My system is highly revealing, and i've moved on from the A8. However it is a fantastic value product for systems with components in a similar price point.

@@andrewrobinsonreviews well I don’t have all the terms down so pardon my ignorance as I attempt to describe haha. I feel that the sound collapses with the A8 straight to an amp. It has dramatically less to no depth or soundstage, the details are gone and the liveliness of the music is gone. There’s no DAC in the Prima Luna preamp, but I think a great experiment for your channel (who am I to say, lol) is if a true preamp added to the chain can improve the sound. That Classe preamp must really suck if the a8 straight to an amp sounds better than running the A8 into the Classe preamp then into an amp. If you’re ever in Saratoga, NY you’re welcome to listen to mine directly but since you already have the 805D4’s and the A8 I would highly recommend giving the primaluna a try in the signal chain because the sound improvement will be dramatic. I run basic Mogami XLR from the A8 to the Primaluna to the Parasound. But I’m telling you there’s a massive difference, like not a small difference. And while I have your attention temporarily thank you for pointing me in the direction of the XTF100’s and matching surrounds, as well as the 805D4’s because I wouldn’t be enjoying the gear I have without your sharing of them. In short you have to pay significant multiples to improve on the A8 sound. Not enough is made of the CD playing function, add a remote $25 external CD drive, and A8 sound , esp if required, comfortably beats a $1k CD player. The M33 is an integrated amplifier, and its transparent preamp/DAC mixed with the lifeless amplifier section also made it an impressive product but a no-go for me. The A8 allows me to add any amp I want, and because its a window to the amplifier, I can now experience the amps' different signatures better.

definitely gonna be a front runner, even this early, for your product of the year

I guess that streamer would work really good with a Rega Brio. You need to try it, even with another streamers and give us your feedback! Hugs from Switzerland!

Do you think the DMP-A6 or DMP-A8 would pair well with an Atessa, 6000a or 7000a?

Will having two videos per product make your workload easier?
    If it does, do it.
Could I get a little more on how vinyl sounded through the preamp.

This preamp does not have a built-in phono preamp, so the sound of your vinyl records will be most impacted by your choice of third-party preamp and the turntable you're using. The A8 doesn't color the sound anymore (or less), so that's good.

No, it doesn't make it easier. Separating the conversation allows us to include more of it. So much was ending up on the cutting room floor that we felt it would be better to create a separate video -- which we hope makes everyone happy. Those who never watch past Andrew's review get what they want, and those who like the back-and-forth get even more!
