Comments below will contain major spoilers for Persona 5 Royal so come back when you’ve beaten the game. This is your friendly neighbourhood spoiler warning.
This song was powerful enough without understanding meaning of any word. But after you look out at the lyrics. Man. This just hits you ten times more. Bow down every single piece of this game is amazing.
True when I first beat p5r I felt sad like it's over and u know just the song but the lyrics is just 10x sadder and even though Akechi is probably alive the main cast doesn't know and just the departure of everyone separating living their lives with Futaba, Yusuke, and Sumire being the only to stay while Haru and Makoto are adults, Ryuji and Ann move for their futures, Ren goes back home with Morgana, and Akechi probably has a rough path ahead for him considering the disappearance of the Metaverse
@@sairentoeko the boss was pretty annoying, but I personally kinda liked it since they encouraged a way more tactical approach with items and baton pass (assuming you didn't use izangi picaro)
If you take it to the jazz club before you leave in Royal, the host will ask you if you’ve seen Akechi around and Joker will say “Thats right. My fight with Akechi still isn’t over.”
I guess that's where our imagination comes in. I literally fanfic-ed the whole night after beating the game while listening to the OSTs. I still feel like Yoshizawa needed more screen time though.
“even though that time shall transform into pain, that pain shall guide me towards the stars and sky above us.” sometimes the best endings aren’t the happy endings, but the ending where we grow as people and face reality head on.
The Sassy Carrot Yep. The original ending is definitely happier, but that’s what makes Royal’s beautiful. It isn’t a happy fairytale ending. It’s real.
Had to come back after the news, may Billy Kametz rest in peace His work as Dr. Maruki is one of the best I’ve ever heard and his character as well as the entire Third Semester are the main reasons Royal is one of the greatest video games of all time
He was truly a master of his work, he was a great man, and played 2 amazing characters, Ferdinand and Maruki, and many more, those are just the two closest to my heart
@@bullsteak3468 He was also the original Voice of Naofumi from The Rising Of The Shield Hero. May Billy Kametz rest in peace 🕊️ 💕🙏 I personally liked his character in this game too Dr Maruki a kind school counselor clumsy at times that gives out snacks.
Now, now... it’s okay to cry. Please... let all your feelings out. If you do that, I can help you escape this pain. I can bring you true happiness. All I need you to do is... Throw away your mask.
Actually kinda it wasn't,I mean probably Joker would have preferred that Akechi was alive, but it was Maruki that ,after seeing the death of Akechi, chose to revive him, not Joker
@@danielebrunetti853 Maruki chose to revive him because that's the reality joker wanted. He realized the reality each party member wanted, for Joker it was to fight alongside Akechi one last time.
@@danielebrunetti853 keep in mind that the revived akechi isn't the real akechi, it's a fake created by maruki's reality same as wakaba and okumura, so everything that akechi was in January was based on joker's perception of him, how he lastly remembers him before his death. Joker remembers akechi sacrificed himself to save the party back in Shido's Palace, and he also remembers his psychotic stance and loki, which is exactly how he is represented in maruki's reality and Palace
@@LinkinVoider Ehmm no? Apart from the fact that he wasn't gone when all the phantom thieves refused the reality Maruki created, he also has his own thoughts and emotions, considering he went against Maruki's reality and has also a persona, which I don't think a fake would be able to have. Another thing is that it's clearly said that Wakaba and Okumora are Not fakes or cognitive beings, but are literally "brought back to life", or more specifically, never died in this reality, but they're still "Real people", which is also Akechi. So when you think about why Akechi isn't gone after the phantom thieves refuse the fake reality, it leads to some questions, which may be answered with Akechi never being brought back to life with a wish made by Joker, since it's not actually said, or that Akechi never died.
Persona 1: Everything starts off calmly, and ends in a rush of cold blood. Persona 2: Life isn’t the way you think it is. Persona 3: Accept death as a part of life, and find meaning for it. Persona 4: Accept who you are, and life will grant you happiness. Persona 5: You can change the future. P5 (Royal): You can’t change the past.
People in these comments forgetting that Akechi stuck to his Justice in the end. Justice isn't always good, evil or what you think it might be, but rather what you believe it to be. Akechi portrays that perfectly
Something to tack onto that- there was one class event in January which one of the teachers says pretty much the same thing, when comparing Western and Eastern cultural viewpoints when it comes to justice. They said something about how Eastern "justice" is on more of a personal moral spectrum, or something. Point is, I think that's important to remember as well, especially when considering the timing for that event.
Akechi's last words before the final choice perfectly puts his justice on display. He pretty much says, "Even if you decide to stay here and be happy in this false reality, I will fight to my last breath. No matter the cost to myself, I just can't accept this reality." Akechi isn't my favorite character in Persona as a series (Nanako, Adachi, and Naoto just hit harder for me in the end) but he is still extremely well written in the end.
I think people tend to forget this song is for the TRUE ENDING, they have to move and mature, change the world but not as the phantoms thieves, but as who they are as kids, people, still have so much they can do, they are just moving to the next phase of their lives, this ending sure isn't as fulfilled as it could be, but it's reality, that's the one they fought for.
Technically the developers did not intend for this to be interpreted as the True Ending, and refer to it as the "Return Ending", according to a staff interview in the Persona 5 Royal Official Completion Guide
@FatBoyJhon well duh 🙄, I'm talking about people confuse the endings up, thinking the ending is meant to be the happy ending where everything is perfect and they ride into the sunset
So, the lyrics of this song are about someone meeting someone in a false reality they come to care for, and that person not wanting that false reality and destroying it, knowing they'll die in the process. The singer laments that while letting that person go hurts, it's the right thing to do and will allow them to forge their own path. It's better to experience pain and be free than to accept a false happiness. So yeah, it's definitely specifically about Akechi. It even references his dialogue. Akechi heroically sacrifices himself twice in this damn game and protag-kun understandably has some feelings about all that. It was his regret at letting Akechi die that brought him back to life, after all. So this song is about protag-kun finally accepting the pain of Akechi's death and moving on from it. That's not to say that the song doesn't thematically fit the ending as a whole though. Protag-kun met all of his friends in that false reality, they all had to help him take it down, and now that he's leaving Tokyo he has to let them go to move on and forge his own path in life (except Morgana but shhhh) just as they do for theirs. They'll always have their time together, but the ending is undeniably bittersweet so the song fits it with that melancholic yet hopeful tone. Agh feelingsssss
BCat I worded that poorly, Maruki had to be taught that his false happiness was wrong. Joker didn’t need to be convinced. Akechi and Joker were already on the same page regarding Maruki’s false reality. The song even plays as Joker saves Maruki’s life. I think it’s pretty clear cut, but I guess if Atlus didn’t want people to discuss this, they wouldn’t have left it open to interpretation so agree to disagree I guess.
@@FatherMulk The song uses the japanese pronoun "bokura" for the "our" in "our light" and that pronoun is used when "we are both boys" only, so it can't be from a perspective of man and woman (the pronoun used would be "watashira" of that was the case)
Rest in peace, Billy Kametz. Your contributions to this game as well as many others were amazing. You were a very talented man, and you will never be forgotten for that.
It's so sad, he was an amazingly talented voice actor and was my favorite actually. May he rest in beautiful sleep. He accomplished alot, more than most
I personally don't think Akechi really hated Joker. I think Akechi simply saw in him what he could have been, what he wanted to be. Someone he was insipired by, someone he desperately wanted to be. But it was too late. Akechi is a guy with A LOT of problems, remember that he killed a ton of people with no problem whatsoever, that he was alone since he was very little. Akechi never got close to anyone, he never loved anyone because nobody loved him in the first place. Every single person he met was either despicable or pathetic in his eyes. But then Joker comes along: someone with a pure heart, who wanted to do good and at the same time he was surrounded by friends who supported him. Joker was the first person Akechi ever met who had integrity and was actually loved by a good amount of people. This is something which drives Akechi wild, because he doesn't understand how that's even POSSIBLE, it sure wasn't for him at least. And in Royal, the more he gets to know Joker, the more this uneasy feeling grows, until he realises the core to the problem: he admires Joker, he wants to be like him!Akechi! The guy who never had to admire anyone, the guy who made it by himself, FOR himself the whole time, now admires a "naive idealistic child". That is when he chokes his feelings, when he simply says:"That's not possible, I guess I just HATE him! Yup, that's it." It might sound odd, even more so if we consider that at some point he tries to kill Joker, and for some time he even thinks he actually succeded. But we have to remember that Akechi does have issues: he's detatched from other people, he pushes them back but at the same time he wants approval (wich is also how he interacts with the public: he likes to be on the spotlight but he never shows his true self, he remains hidden guarded.), so when Joker manages to reach somewhere in Akechi's soul (or heart if you wish eheh) he instantly pushes him back and actually tries to erase him completely, which might seem like an overeaction but we also have to remember that he was ordered to do that anyway and he murdered people before: murder in his mind is an accettable solution at that point. I'm no psychologist but I think this is somewhat similar to how depression works: you push people away, even people you care about. In Maruki's reality we see how Akechi progressively accepts the fact that Joker is an important part of his life: someone he cares about to some extent, someone he keeps always in his mind, someone to whom he values enough to consider him an ideal to be overcome, to be improved by his own personal efforts. He no longer denies Joker in his life. The problem is: the development stops there, because Akechi is dead. That's the whole point: he gave his life to hatred and revenge and he loses sight of what really is important in his young life. He even realises this right before he's killed in Shido Palace: he lost his chance to be loved, to be normal, he lost a friend ("somewhere along in the bitterness.."), he lost himself. There's nothing left to do for him anymore. *Akechi is dead.* Could these two have been friends? I onestly don't know. Probably, but I insist on the fact that Akechi is NOT normal. The kid's got issues. So he probably would have to work on himself before anything else, maybe even seek professional help.
yeah akechi was a psychopath tho, and his lack of remourse for his actions makes it hard for me to care about him. He was a victim of society, but hes still a monster who doesnt really want to change
@@harrymg8458 Don't just drop Psychopath everywhere because you know the word and not its meaning. You're also missing to much information to make this statement.
You know what the saddest part about Akechi is? Lavenza tells you that in the game between Igor and Yaldabaoth, they each chose someone to represent their side. Igor chose Joker to represent humanity’s potential, while Yaldy chose Akechi to incite the masses’ distortion, meaning that from the moment Akechi was born, he was already being used as a puppet by someone else. Whether it be Shido or Yaldy, there was never a point in Akechi’s life where he was in control of his own fate. Even though Maruki’s reality offered him everything he ever wanted, he still chose to oppose it, knowing full-well that doing so would kill him, just so he could finally feel what it was like to be free for once in his life.
I agree with mostly everything you said, but just to clarify, Ren and Akechi weren't "chosen at birth"; Akechi specifically says that "an entity" came to him somewhere along his early teens and awakened him to the wild card powers, and Ren awakens to them - I'm guessing - when the Meta-Nav first shows up in his phone
I feel like a good portion of Royal was to tell the people who dont like Akechi that he isnt just the villian, but the flipside to the protag. His rival
What no he's still a villain he has killed many people and like in the third semester he said he doesn't regret doing it and would do it all over again
@@funnysillycat2355 I'm not sure what you understood of what I said. Let's get on the same page. I consider Akechi a terrible person because he killed thousands of people and is definetly twisted. That doesn't mean he can't be Joker's rival or that Joker can't really care about him (I care too).
Akechi has to be one of, if not the only, sympathetic villains I actually enjoy. His story is incredibly tragic without having to rely on cheap or overused beats, his betrayal *actually* caught me off guard, even though I picked up on the pancake hint, which I just brushed off because he had Robin Hood when we brought him into Sae's palace for the first time, and not Loki. And then his sacrifice leaving Joker scarred to the point that when Maruki makes his offer, Joker is actually tempted to accept it makes his character way too easy to get attached to. The fact that he sacrificed himself and placed his ambitions of taking Shido down in Joker's hand when Akechi could have just as easily ran away and left the party to deal with Shadow Akechi shows how much he actually respects Joker.
Royal really hurt me with Akechi being ready to die in order to be free from being controlled by someone else. He’s had no agency over his life because of Shido and Yaldabaoth, and now in order for him to live free he needs to fight for a reality where he’s still dead. Nothing but respect for this man, especially after he sacrificed himself twice for us.
I lost both my parents and playing through persona 5 and seeing futaba and haru's story made me cry a lot and then seeing the translation for this song makes it even more so. It makes me sad and happy at the same time. I'm 24 now and I have a much deeper appreciation for the people in my life. Thanks persona 5 for making me feel like I can live on with the pain
I always cry when i hear this song. Puts me in the feels right away, it means a lot to me as a person. I completely understand Persona 5 Royal and the message they were going for. Such a great game and experience, bout to cry right now 😅...
This song represents how all of them are leaving each other behind to move on with their lives, and how painful it is to let go of those you love. But despite how painful it is, the things you experienced with them, and how they helped you grow, those will stay with you forever. I left my country some years ago and I stopped speaking to many friendships that were important to me. It was sad leaving everything behind and seeing how old those people stopped being part of my life, yet I will forever treasure those experiences. Royal really hit home for me, and remind me of why life is worth living. this game was great on its vanilla version, but it has now become a masterpiece with royal.
@@dreamerthief2216 not trying to argue but if you read the lyrics its very cleary about Akechi. Its literally Joker talking about Akechi. The meaning behind the song can be portrayed across all the characters but the song itself is about the both of them. As they are the most important characters symbolically in P5R their relationship is literally the most crucial plot point.
I had to come back here to pay my respects to Maruki's english VA, Billy Kametz. He passed away recently... Thank you for giving us an amazing performance that elevated Maruki's character like no one could ever do. Rest in peace.
you will be missed billy kametz. your performance as maruki touched my heart alongside countless others. may you be welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven and rest peacefully.
Headcanon: Some form of this song- or, at least, the lyrics- exists within the game's universe. Penned by none other than Akira himself, after the events of P5R's true ending. Be it immediately after, or years later, and it is locked within a little box and contains a single glove, a pair of fake glasses, a blank calling card, a few lockpicks, and a little notepad in which the lyrics are written. There is a lock on this box, and a card fitted into a carefully hidden door on the side of it. The key is hidden in this little card, bound to it on the inside. The only thing on this card is the symbol of the Phantom Thieves.
Billy’s work as Maruki had a very deep impact on me. I was going through the worst depression of my life when I first played Royal and Maruki’s character, development and story really hit home. Billy’s performance was a big part of that. It will always be my favorite role of his. Goodbye Billy and thank you for everything
Alpharad once said that he will never get to play Persona 5 for the first time again and, after playing it, I felt that. Royal was as close as I got, but this time the post-game depression hit really, really, hard, and that's great. No game or movie has ever gotten me to feel this much. I have never had post-game depression until I beat it. Now whenever I listen to "I Believe" I am reminded of my love for this game. When I listen to "Our Light" I am reminded of the bittersweetness of this ending and that's kind of the point. I am going off to college soon, so I think I played this game at the perfect time because I think this game's themes are relavent in not only 2020, but also in the transition to the rest of my life. I am leaving my family and friends behind to start my own life. Royal is now my favorite game by a long shot the closest something comes is Smash Ultimate or Brawl which is fitting as the Ultimate is the game that introduced me to this amazing game. Now when ever I am being lazy or am in a bad place. I say the phrase "Wake up, Get up, Get Out There" or else my life won't change.
I played the original and I loved it. I just beat this game 4 days ago and it’s literally giving me lost game depression. I’m not going to lie My eyes got watery on the 2nd to last day where you went to say goodbye to everyone. I couldn’t believe it, I didn’t want to leave this world. This game was a special and A magical journey from start to finish.
P5R post-game depression felt like I got rammed by a train. It’s a bittersweet ending to a really good game. A lot of people didn’t like this ending because of it. But I think it’s for the best. Their chapter as Phantom Thieves has come to an end w/ the Metaverse being gone. Realistically, all of them needed to move on and follow their dreams, even if it results in them separating and walking their own path.
@@joegardner851 indeed man, the original kinda felt ok to me- but royal totally ended strong from how they were at the beginning till how they matured towards realizing their own dreams moving forward.. Already felt that I'd miss them when we have to say goodbye to each and every character in the game :( Best Gaem!
You've never had post game depression? Just play NieR: Automata c: I have only three games I consider 10/10, and NieR: Automata was the first one. (if you're curious, the second and third are Code Vein and P5R respectively)
When this actually played at the end of the game, I actually said out loud, "I won't let it end like this." Imagine my surprise when that came up as a line for Joker right after.
Just beat Royal recently, and got goosebumps listening to this song. Didn't know the lyrics so I went to check this video out, and man I am just sitting here crying. In a weird, melodramatic way, I think it can also sum up the fanbase's feelings after beating this game. Where it feels like you just woke up from a good dream where you know you won't experience it anymore, and it leaves you with a mix of pain and utter joy. Seriously, one of the best games I've ever played. Sad that it's over and I won't get to experience it the same way again, but I'm happy to have taken the journey.
Definitely. It’s one of the games I’ve played where once I beat it it’s sad cause when I go through again I know what happens and all the turn points. It truly does make me sad to complete a great game and having to leave it behind. Definitely one of the few games that’s had a piece of me to stay with it as well.
I mean that’s how reality is. From birth to death something ends and makes something new whether it be literal or something else. Which is weird because that describes the fool arcana very well. The beginning gives infinite possibilities however the journey has an end and someone else’s journey had to end to make the blank page to start the beginning of your own.
I think the song can be about a general sense of grief that covers all the phantom thieves, since each one of them had to give something up, but in Joker's case that would still be the fact he had to give up Akechi.
Rest in piece, Billy Kametz. His voice work as Maruki was phenomenal, and really helped make his entire character arc as emotional as it was. It's tragic that he died so young, fuck cancer.
The point of Akechi is not forgiving nor forgetting his past actions, it's that he does actions to compensate for all the wrong he's done. He saved the world, twice possibly (if you count the possibility of the PT dying on the engine room if it wasn't for Akechi). So yeah, it's not about forgetting what he did, it's about what he's doing now, in the end a person isn't only what they're in the past, it's what they are in front of you, and on the future. (Also quick unrelated side not but I think not a lot of people know that Akechi thinks his life as pretty worthless and values himself incredibly low. I mean why do you think he didn't care possibly dying twice? He has 0 value for his own life, but possibly he has a bit of value for at least Joker's life and friendship, which may be as to why he got to survive in the ending)
@@guedacheese Very true. It's impressive how people love redeemable characters then go cancelling people over stuff they did 5 years ago that doesn't represent them anymore
I hated Akechi in the first game, but after p5r I think he’s my fav character Edit- the reason I like akechi in p5r is because of the third act/semester. Seeing him redeem himself without ignoring the things that happened in the past is in my opinion the best way to write a villain; he still did the things he did and the party still acknowledges that, however he's willing to change himself for the greater good, being stopping the final palace ruler Is akechi a bad person? Yes. Is he a well written villain? Yes.
@@adri._. Cause they totally wrote him such an amazing redemption arc lookin more matured along with everyone havin their own dreams to look forward to >u
In the OG he was cool, just like the rest of the cast. Playing royal, the biggest thing i noticed really liking as a change was his new link, and to a lesser extent the new cast too. It felt like getting to know a whole new person, and it made the whole part with him at the end a lil more frustrating. The whole highlight of the game for me at that point was forming a “friendly” rivalry with him, so seeing them confirm his survival, have you fight along his true colours, then you yourself have to either choose to accept a perfect world handed to you, or to choose reality where he dies. The bad ending is the happy one. The good ending is painful. I know P3 is famously “sad” at the end, but despite how great aigis’s speech was, really it was just my blank slate character passing away, someone i used to insert, not got to know, and honestly i didnt even love p3 THAT much until its last month. With royal, you make Sumi whom you’ve befriended over the past year accept her painful past, you fight against Maruki who you grew to love, no matter how he pleas you throw away the mask and accept this peace, all for a dark, painful, yet “real” world where this Akechi youve grown to love is gone. Sure, its the “right” thing to do, but rather than just seeing all your fellow comrades accept their close ones who have passed or throw their ideals away, YOU feel that too.
@@cloodstroof7786 yea akechi's new non-story tied confidant narrative adds a whole lot of layer to his character with addition to holding on to their promise of being rivals towards the end >u
@socially unacceptable yeah, and joker would have a dream of them meeting in the velvet room and akechi would call him pathetic and offer him a game of chess
Akechi stood in the face of death and had no fear. His whole life was him being a pawn to others and he didn't want that to happen again no matter what. That final scene with the 3 of them made akechi such a memorable and amazing character
This song hits really hard, especially when you realize that the Phantom Thieves defied a false reality and chose to face the world and their cruel reality. They charged forward never looking back. Yes, it may fit Akechi and Akira, but I think it depicts both Dr. Maruki's struggle after letting Rumi go and his wish to change that reality into a painless one for everyone, and the ideal world the PT had to leave behind as they noticed the distorted world. I like to think that this song is about accepting the changes in life, moving on with whatever desire you had, and never giving up. That was the main point of the false reality and your own views as a person: if you have the power to live in a cruel reality or choosing to live in a painless one for the sake of simplicity. And that reflects in your comrades choosing to pursue their goals, Sumire choosing to live as herself and fulfill her promises and the protagonist returning home after his ordeal as the world savior, leaving his lover behind (if you chose to have one) until they met again.
ShaddyShadShadow yea but still he has a point as in the song it talks about trying to move on from the pain(maruki to rumi forgetting him)and trying to firm a new reality which was marukis whole goal.
Well.. akehi killed many people.. eventhough on shido order.. and he is a teen highschool.. i doubt atlus make him still alive.. everyone of us has a two face mask. But akechi unfortunately has crossed the line..
I loved dark akechi.. but i dont know if i can accept him in as real life friend if i know him has killed people before. And by choice not self defense
But i still respect akechi as a man.. he truly have what it takes for robin hood persona.. he know hes going to die if maruki defeated. Yet he still do it because his heart nd conviction tells him to.. its like you go to war. You know you will die. But you die to protect your country and family
I'm so happy I decided to play Royal after the OG. Akechi's writing on the OG left a bittersweet taste in my mouth, but the extra content we got in Royal, and the 3rd semester... I really grew to like him, and now my heart hurts with feels.
Just like 1 lifetime isn’t enough to experience the world, there isn’t enough time in 1 play through to do everything you want to do. As I approach 30 years old the comparison hits me like a truck. My own experience as a teen was my own and I loved it; but It brought me immeasurable joy to relive my youth again vicariously through Joker. “Take your time” what a masterfully written, executed, and invaluable recurring theme. By the end of the game you’ll be reflecting on all the days that’s gone, your old bonds, mistakes and successes in life. I’ve never ever gotten that from a game and that’s why it’s my favorite of all time.
I love how open to interpretation this song is. You can say this song is about Joker and Akechi, Sumire and Kasumi, Maruki and Rumi or even the PT and their desires and still not be wrong. Truly one of the best ending songs ever
The relationship between Joker and Akechi reminds me a lot of Mob psycho, the arc where he faces this mega powerful and evil psychic who makes him realize that he is the way he is because he got lucky, because he grew in an enviorment that allowed him to be someone who wouldn't take advantage of his powers and who cared for people because there were people who cared about him. Both Joker and Akechi belonged nowhere, they were alone. But Joker found a home and people who would be by his side, Akechi, sadly, did not.
This song is especially sad knowing what it's truly about. Also I am sad for MC that Akechi and him never get the ending they deserved, but Akechi sacrificing himself seemed like the best option for the world.
It's ironic, Akechi's part "I will go and walk along the path I've chosen for myself" shows a pure essence of the game's many but strongest themes: Rebellion. Atleast, that's how Joker saw him but I'd like to think he would actually do the exact same.
just a few months after I finished Royal for the first time, my cousin lost his fight with cancer. Re-listening to this with the English lyrics has given this song new meaning to me. I’m moved to tears every time I hear it now. But most importantly, it helps me remind myself that I need to keep going on with my life. Something I’ve found difficulty with ever since he passed away. I miss him dearly. But, though I may never see him again, he will always live on in my heart. Rest In Peace, Trent. I love you man
Atlus be like : People don't seem to like Akechi that much, now what can we do in Royal to make people cry about him? Writters : Hold my beer Lyn and Shin Megami Tensei : we'll make them cry trust us
The cool thing about this song is that it can really be applied to all the phantom theives. I know all notice it might be in reference to akechi. But all the phantom theives lost somthing when they woke from their dreams. -Makoto loss her dad and a fixed relationship with her sister -futaba loss her mom and the family she always wanted -haru loss her dad and the relationship/respect she craved from him -ryuji loss his place in school and his respect from his peers -Ann loss her wish for her and shiho to be together and to live without guilt of not helping her when shiho needed her -yusuke loss his relationship with the man who raised him and the respect for his mentor -kasumi loss her reality where she wasn't at fault for her sister's death and the confidence that came with -morgana loss the world where he truely felt like a equal to the rest of his friends and had a chance at romance with ann A beautifully written song to show the strength, sadness, and hope everyone felt to throw away their false realities and choose to grow through the pain
Spoilers ahead People tend to dislike the true ending for the bittersweetness of it, but the thing is that it's by far the most realistic and truly the "best" ending possible. The Phantom Thieves are now over and they have to move on from that chapter of their lives. They wish they could've continued changing the hearts of criminals but they know that they must face the world ahead of them. The world they chose to live in, not Maruki's reality. I would like to add to what I said to clarify. I never said that the ending was "good". Whether or not it is is your opinion. But in the context of the story and the morals that we've learned throughout the story, to the Phantom Thieves, it was the right and best move to do. The whole point of why they decided to leave the reality that Maruki made is because of the fact that they can choose their own future. I might've phrased it wrong when I said it was the best ending, and that's my fault. But what I meant is that to them as the group and considering everything that they've been through in the game, it makes sense that they felt it was right and the best move to pursue their own endeavors in life because that is what they fought for in the end. (EDIT: I’m well aware P5S exists. When I initially made this, it wasn’t going to be released in the West yet, and I was talking about it in the context of P5R.)
@@abslzero I disagree. The true ending is empty, it's full of the truth. The truth of Persona 5 Royal, the events that came before, not the reality created for them by Maruki. After all, this whole game's message is about breaking out from the chains of fate, the chains of society, and living your own life. And you know what? Every damn character is doing just that. Ann is studying abroad, Akira is heading back to his home town, Yusuke will continue to work on his art, Haru and Makoto are both heading to college so they can pursue their dreams, and most importantly to me, Ryuji, who refuses to let an injury stand in the way of his dream of becoming a track star. The good ending is good and all, but when you stop to think about it, the true ending couldn't be any better
The ending wasn't bad because it was "bittersweet". It was awful because it was clearly a rushed job with no thought put into it. Maruki which became the central figure and one of the most interesting characters of the Persona series was thrown away like used toilet paper after the helicopter flash. They didn't bother explaining what happened to him, you didn't get a chance to talk to him, you didn't get to see what happened to Rumi and how he got over it, or literally anything at all. They just pulled a cheap trick and made him into a taxi driver so you could see him in one last cameo before they ended it with a scene that was worse than the original P5 ending by orders of magnitude. It was a reaaaally bad ending on their part. It wasn't bittersweet, it was just bad.
that song hurts ! it's not only about Akechi but suffering of leaving someone you love, so yeah of course Maruki, Sumire and Joker/Akechi, but it feels like a message from the phantom thieves to joker and to the player. Hurts more than I anticipated
What really hit me was the near-end of the credits roll where they included a special mention in the memory of Matsuki Miyu (Chihaya Mifune's original P5 JP voice). Legitimate grown-ass manly tears were shed.
I'm just here to pay my respects to Billy Kametz- Dr. Maruki's actor who pased away too soon. From the little I've seen of him, he seemed like an amazing person, and his role as Takuto Maruki in this game was perfectly cast, and I owe him a deal of gratitude for the impact this game has on my life. May you rest in peace Bill...! 🕯
The first time I finished the game I just sat there hearing this and I started bawling. I didn't cry a single time throughout the entire game, but after 200 hours everything that I experienced came to my mind (especially the Royal part) and the song absolutely destroyed me.
I don't get why people are angry about the ending, it's bittersweet, and that isn't a bad thing. A good story doesn't has to necessarily have a happy ending
It's way more interesting that way. Happy endings are great and all, but if everything ended happily it would become predictable and ineffective. I remember the ending to this game way more vividly then most others simply because I felt emotions that weren't just satisfaction.
He won the poll for most popular party member in Sega Festival 2016, which was years before Royal came out. So i don't think he was one of the most hated.
@Arkaine197 I think he meant that most fans kinda get him now. Because I do remember for a good portion of 2016-2019, alot of persona fans were pretty hatefully vocal on akechi.
@@meowser994 It might be ther difference between western and Japanese fans because from what i've found Persona 5 wasn't released in the west until 2017, so this would be a totally Japanese poll.
_Even if we'd never meet again, Even if the time has passed should transform into pain, that pain will guide me towards the stars of the sky that shine above me._ This hits very hard dude! P5R gave me the most post-game depression after finishing it and hearing this very heart-touching song😢💔
Spoilers: I just beat the game and man does this song bring chills. The true ending is far more bittersweet than vanilla P5, and this playing in the credits forces everyone to reflect on all of their whole experience. I feel like that this is what the protagonist or his squad mates are thinking at the end of all the events that occur. All of these characters are far more developed and matured at the end of Royal. All of the Thieves are moving on, similar to how you’re moving on from this era from Persona. It’s truly sad yet hopeful, this game series has changed my life. Royal was fantastic, I’m surprised I liked it more than Golden. This song will make anybody cry idagf😭😭
@@thatoneguy9687 The song have the same meaning as "Memories of You". Our Light is Ren to Akechi and Memories of You is Aigis to Makoto. It also reflects both the protagonists (Ren and Makoto) and deuteragonists (Akechi and Aigis) thoughts, through the close bonds they share.
I just finished Royal, YOU CANNOT TELL ME THIS SONG ISNT ABOUT AKECHI AND AKIRA. GOD IM SOBBING I HATE IT I HATE IT ATLUS MADE ME LIKE AKECHI AGAIN THEN WAS LIKE "NAH HE STILL DEAD LMAO" BRUH WHY
You're crying about the death of a fictional psychopath that destroyed your fictional friends' lifes, shot you in the face and promised to kill you in a duel And the song is about maruki's and joker's relation at the end of the game from maruki's viewpoint
@@inaciobits682 bro. It's. It's not real. And for the record I'm crying over him because if what he went through. I don't excuse what he did, that's one if the main reasons I didn't like him actually. But I'm able to empathize what he went through, and the trauma he had to go through. Not to mention that if he didn't kill all those people, his dad would've murdered him. He was manipulated and controlled by his father his entire life, and that fact that the only way he could escaped being controlled by Maruki was death makes it worse. And personally, I don't think it's really about joker and Maruki. Mostly because of the line "when I awake from my slumber, your warmth, your hand, your voice on mine too, will disappear with it." Which, I interpreted as joker basically saying "oh yeah, once we go back to the real reality ur gonna die lmao" but more importantly,,, why did you get so hostile over a RUclips comment bruh??? Like,,, I get it if you don't like Akechi, like I said I didn't like him. But like,,, chill out lmao.
@@pixelbombed Honestly, they keep his fate fairly vague and open ended. Depending on some of your dialogue choices, there's the extra part to the ending animation where a figure that looks strikingly similar ot Akechi, to the point he's wearing all the same clothes is walking passed Joker's window with two men in black before the scene where he sees himself wearing his mask as a reflection. Plus, if you talk to the jazz club owner about Akechi Joker thinks 'but Akechi's already...' but then feels the glove in his pocket and remembers they still have unfinished business.
I'm concerned cause the P.Studio it's out of the franchise, I mean I believe they will come back later with Persona 7, but at least Persona 6 will be so different... Damn, P5 it's all about changes, they where preparing us? The song hits harder now... Pd: for everyone wondering, the P.Studio lead is now making a new rpg about medieval fantasy, the b studio of Persona is in the making of the 6
Akechi wasn't my favorite character in Vanilla P5, but in Royal my opinion of him went from "fuck this guy" to feeling complete sympathy. Akechi in Royal is the perfect example of that one guy who even though he did horrible things, you still see the good in him and want to go to hell and back to save him, but no matter how hard you try he is always out of reach. He may have said he hated Ren/Akira/Joker with a burning passion and even admitted he was jealous, but I feel deep down he really didn't. If Akechi hated him as much as he said than he wouldn't have sacrificed himself not once, but twice
I really wish I could just play through this game blind again. It was an unforgettable experience, from just making friends with teammates to going through the twists and turns of the story. It was all just so amazing, and it's something I'll always remember.
If I could I'd erase the entire Persona series from my mind just so I could experience it all over again. Persona is just one of those series where the story gets you invested, you care about all the characters to the point that they feel like actual friends to you, and when you're near the end of the story you dread it because you don't want it to end. Not to mention its one of the series' that in every installment you only get to experience it once. For that reason I both pity and envy anyone who has never played Persona before
I see that many people say that this song is about Akechi and I understand, but I think is not about him alone. I think this is the perspective of every character that lost someone who they love, cuz... Y'know, 3rd semester is basically about losses and having to keep moving forward: Futaba towards Wakaba Sumire towards Kasumi Haru towards her dad Makoto towards her dead Maruki towards Rumi (the Rumi that he used to know) And of course: Joker towards Akechi. They did an awesome job making this song about grief and loss because it relates with all those characters, their struggles, their feelings about their loved ones and the aknowledgement that they have to live, even if it hurts... I just love this game, forgive me lol
if i can make addition may be from perspective P5R Player to P5R, its like farewell song. To make P5R Player continue their life after complete P5R playthrough.
I can't even begin to describe how I felt hearing this song for the first time, after beating the game for the first time and saying goodbye to all my confidants. I knew I was gonna go for a second playthrough right away, but even when I couldn't understand the Japanese lyrics, this song made me feel as if I was saying goodbye to someone important. I thought it was the perfect end credits song, one that really manages to hit you hard with the feeling of saying goodbye to a beloved cast of characters after a series finale. Now having seen this english translation and knowing what the song seems to be about... It just makes it even more heartbreaking.
Finished it the third time now, as of today. And I also cried again. This game just means so much to me. The last two years have been pretty tough for me, but this game has been with me throughout all of it. I wouldn't be who I am today without it, it has told me so much about what I want to do, once all of this Covid shit is over. And it might be over pretty soon. So I wanna take the lessons I have learned, and live my life to the fullest with them. I think this will be the most important Song to me forever. The first time I heard it, when I watched the credits, I think something changed about me. I always replay it, but never without a reason, even if it isn't apparent to me at first. Something about this game is special, it feels like as if it knew me personally. The way it just grabbed me and turned me upside down, I will never forget it. If things are getting normal again soon, I will live my life, knowing that this game will forever be part of me.

This hits different knowing that Joker's wish in [redacted]'s reality was to see Akechi alive. :(
Actually kinda it wasn't,I mean probably Joker would have preferred that Akechi was alive, but it was Maruki that ,after seeing the death of Akechi, chose to revive him, not Joker
@@danielebrunetti853 Maruki chose to revive him because that's the reality joker wanted. He realized the reality each party member wanted, for Joker it was to fight alongside Akechi one last time.
@@LinkinVoider You're probably right, but since that isn't specified I don't know for sure.
This hurts now. This really hurts. Rest in peace, Billy. We’ll never forget you.
It makes sense he is the justices arcarna
Akechi's last words before the final choice perfectly puts his justice on display. He pretty much says, "Even if you decide to stay here and be happy in this false reality, I will fight to my last breath. No matter the cost to myself, I just can't accept this reality." Akechi isn't my favorite character in Persona as a series (Nanako, Adachi, and Naoto just hit harder for me in the end) but he is still extremely well written in the end.
What can I say? He did his goddamn job.
Uhh buddy? Akechi killed dozens of innocent people.
@FatBoyJhon people do, they expect the true ending to be this perfect happy ending, where they ride to the sunset and everything is perfect
Ah ty
@FatBoyJhon well duh 🙄, I'm talking about people confuse the endings up, thinking the ending is meant to be the happy ending where everything is perfect and they ride into the sunset
@FatBoyJhon I'm talking about everything, but ig not everyone can keep up even at slow paces, my bad
It’s about Maruki moving on from Rumi and learning to not accept false happiness from Joker.
@BCat it basically explains that in the song no more what ifs
@@FatherMulk The song uses the japanese pronoun "bokura" for the "our" in "our light" and that pronoun is used when "we are both boys" only, so it can't be from a perspective of man and woman (the pronoun used would be "watashira" of that was the case)

Yup, that's it."
It might sound odd, even more so if we consider that at some point he tries to kill Joker, and for some time he even thinks he actually succeded.
*Akechi is dead.*
Could these two have been friends? I onestly don't know. Probably, but I insist on the fact that Akechi is NOT normal. The kid's got issues. So he probably would have to work on himself before anything else, maybe even seek professional help.
i had to scroll way too much to find this comment, this is spot on

Hearing this after Dr. Maruki’s VA passing away, this hurts a lot more than usual…

Royal really hit home for me, and remind me of why life is worth living. this game was great on its vanilla version, but it has now become a masterpiece with royal.
i feel the same broh
Bruh that's cool but it's about how much protag missed Akechi, who is like his best friend, a rival, and a brother and it's so sad omg.
The vanilla version was a masterpiece as well imo, Royal took a 10/10 game and made it a 11/10 for me.
@@xelectrix_1863 they are not the only characters in the game you know?
@@dreamerthief2216 not trying to argue but if you read the lyrics its very cleary about Akechi. Its literally Joker talking about Akechi. The meaning behind the song can be portrayed across all the characters but the song itself is about the both of them. As they are the most important characters symbolically in P5R their relationship is literally the most crucial plot point.
But the real light was the friends we made along the way.
Now that I think about it, that really is the plot, huh?

Headcanon:
Some form of this song- or, at least, the lyrics- exists within the game's universe.

Dude this made me cry, I love this comment. That gives it a whole other level of depth.
I'm gonna say it. This song hurt almost as much as Memories of You.
...yeah.
Just play NieR: Automata c:
I have only three games I consider 10/10, and NieR: Automata was the first one. (if you're curious, the second and third are Code Vein and P5R respectively)
When this actually played at the end of the game, I actually said out loud, "I won't let it end like this." Imagine my surprise when that came up as a line for Joker right after.
;-;
“i will go and walk on the path i’ve chosen for myself”
This convinced me the song is about Akechi.
The "One of the best games released in recent years is over" theme.
One of the best game I ever played in general
Freedom vs security.
I like how persona manages to end while saying that nothing really ends and everything is just another beginning.

@@KingMertel lol
Tell that to cancel culture. Then again it's not like they'll listen to anyone anyways.
@@guedacheese Very true. It's impressive how people love redeemable characters then go cancelling people over stuff they did 5 years ago that doesn't represent them anymore
This whole arc is probably going to hit harder now, considering Maruki's English VA Billy Kametz...
I hated Akechi in the first game, but after p5r I think he’s my fav character
Edit- the reason I like akechi in p5r is because of the third act/semester. Seeing him redeem himself without ignoring the things that happened in the past is in my opinion the best way to write a villain; he still did the things he did and the party still acknowledges that, however he's willing to change himself for the greater good, being stopping the final palace ruler
Is akechi a bad person? Yes.
Is he a well written villain? Yes.
In the first i thought he was ok but man p5r made him my favorite idk how i got so attached to him

Shine on Billy Kametz. Your flaming soul is the only thing that can never truly be extingished. 🔥🔥🔥
You know this song is gonna hit hard when Lyn singing it in JPN.
I'm not crying because it's this song is about Akechi it's just my hayfever acting up yeah 😭

Well.. akehi killed many people.. eventhough on shido order.. and he is a teen highschool.. i doubt atlus make him still alive.. everyone of us has a two face mask.

People tend to dislike the true ending for the bittersweetness of it, but the thing is that it's by far the most realistic and truly the "best" ending possible.
I get why some people dislike the true ending because of how empty it is tho
@@abslzero That's just reality.
After all it is called the true ending. Not the happiest ending nor the best ending.

I don't get why people are angry about the ending, it's bittersweet, and that isn't a bad thing. A good story doesn't has to necessarily have a happy ending
Yeah, I agree with you. People are just mad that the ending isn't a happy one but instead the characters go on their lives
It's way more interesting that way. Happy endings are great and all, but if everything ended happily it would become predictable and ineffective. I remember the ending to this game way more vividly then most others simply because I felt emotions that weren't just satisfaction.
I love the fact that Akechi went from being one of the most hated characters in the game to being one of the most loved when p5r was released

Both Morgana and Maruki already says Akechi doesn't hate Joker... Joker was the only person Akechi was able to reveal his true self i.e. "I hate you"
I really wish I could just play through this game blind again. It was an unforgettable experience, from just making friends with teammates to going through the twists and turns of the story. It was all just so amazing, and it's something I'll always remember.
Same, the experience and emotions from playing the game blind was so strong
If I could I'd erase the entire Persona series from my mind just so I could experience it all over again. Persona is just one of those series where the story gets you invested, you care about all the characters to the point that they feel like actual friends to you, and when you're near the end of the story you dread it because you don't want it to end. Not to mention its one of the series' that in every installment you only get to experience it once. For that reason I both pity and envy anyone who has never played Persona before
I see that many people say that this song is about Akechi and I understand, but I think is not about him alone. I think this is the perspective of every character that lost someone who they love, cuz... Y'know, 3rd semester is basically about losses and having to keep moving forward:
Futaba towards Wakaba
Sumire towards Kasumi
Haru towards her dad
Makoto towards her dead
Maruki towards Rumi (the Rumi that he used to know)
And of course: Joker towards Akechi.
Rest In Peace Billy Kametz, may the light forever shine on you
I can't even begin to describe how I felt hearing this song for the first time, after beating the game for the first time and saying goodbye to all my confidants.
I feel the same way, I was a really bad place when I first decided to play this game, I played vanilla first since I couldn’t afford royal and cried over akechi and Futabas stories, when I played royal those feelings came back. This games always been there for me for the past year, it’s like a blanket
Best credits theme ever but it hits even harder knowing that Billy Kametz is dead now. Idk why I immediately looked up Our Light when I found out
Absolutely my favorite song in the game. What a beautiful sendoff to one of my favorite games of all time. Hearing Lyn actually sing in Japanese is a whole other level of amazing, that feat being exclusive to the true ending song makes it way more impactful.
This game made me cry at the Akechi moments.
Seeing my favorite character die twice and live in a world where he has no free will really hurts. Thank you so much Atlus, for this amazing experience.
Rest in peace dr. maruki
This song hit me right in the heart. The ending and all it entails have moved me to my very core. I'm so glad I bought royal, it is honestly the best game I've played to completion by far.
