    I know Veleno's stats don't look great, but he's going to be a solid player. He was really turning it on in the AHL creating lots of chances and making great plays on both sides of the ice. Generational player? Absolutely not, but he's not one to sleep on. Detroit got a steal with him at 30.

      Gotta remember when Datsyuk was taken by the Wings no one thought he was generational either. And he ended up being the best player in the world/NHL for about a decade. Proper development and deployment by a franchise is more important than numbers put up in junior leagues. Datsyuk wouldn't be a generational talent had he not played with Hull, or learned from Larionov/Bowmen.

    Sean Day only got exceptional status because the OHL didn’t want to lose him to the USHL. And even though he didn’t pan out, he was the face of a dying franchise for years in Misssissauga, so the OHL probably still saw him as a net positive for the league, even if he cheapened the meaning of exceptional status.

      @leebrien21 4 года назад +4

      I have heard from a reputable source within the OHL, that there were some 'Life Events' that may have changed Day's dedication to hockey.
      I can't confirm this is 100% true, but the legend goes; Day was very close with his older brother, who got in some serious legal trouble back home in Detroit and Day's focus became supporting his brother. Day spent as much time back home in Detroit with his family as he could, but the travel from Toronto to Detroit became too much to handle, which is why he eventually got traded to Windsor. There were no shortage of potential landing spots (and potentially better offers) for him (Kitchener, London, Sarnia) but Day would allegedly only approve a trade to the Spitfires
      I wouldn't be surprised that the pressure of living up to the 'Exceptional' Status was a lot to handle but when you mix the usual challenges a junior hockey player faces (New home, new family, new expectations ect.) and add the Exceptional tag and some serious disruption to his family. I get why Hockey may have lost a little flame in his eyes.
      Sean Day was a fun player to watch in the OHL, I hope he can still put it together and make the show.

      @Ryan-nv2wp 4 года назад +3

      Connor Mcteer why are you getting so mad? Chill out just trying to have discourse. To disprove your point completely talent players come from everywhere that’s not a question. But to say hockey is dying in Canada and the USA has to be the single dumbest thing u have ever heard. In the past 3 years the nhl has added 2 new teams from the USA to the nhl (Seattle coming in 2021 and Vegas) so just stop. To add to that the best Swedish hockey player is Nicholas backstrom, a guy who could possible make the hall one day. Finland’s best is Laine probably superstar. Russia is ovi no question there. Go to Canada and the USA now Joe Thornton,Ryan getzlaf,Sidney Crosby,Connor Mcdavid, Steven Stamkos,Cladue Giroux, Taylor Hall, Justin Williams,Eric Stall, and of course Nathan mackinonn. Now that’s Canada let’s move on to the USA Patrick Kane, phill Kessel, Joe palveski, Zach Parsie, Blake wheeler. Most of these guys are superstars. also when disagreeing with someone it isn’t best to question there knowledge on the topic. Trust me I know hockey, probably more then you do and you had no reason to bring it up at all. Moral of the day hockey isn’t dying In the USA and Canada and USA draftees will stay steadily. Also like to point out the fact how many European players fucking bomb or just play in KHL for there careers

    • @cannoliscards
      @cannoliscards 4 года назад +1

      Connor Mcteer there’s only 50 Russians playing in the league right now. How many new rising American superstars are there? Quinn Hughes, Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel just to name a few since 2015. The fact that only recently can a player go directly from the USHL in his draft year to the first round in the draft and now directly to the NHL itself. Scandinavia has gotten better at producing talent but all their tops picks are playing in their top league, not their junior league. The US is and will be more of a hockey powerhouse than Sweden Finland and Russia hands down. Nice to know you can already tell 2019 wasn’t a very good draft lmao and you say I don’t know what I’m talking about. It legit happened less than a year ago we won’t know definitively where it stands for a few years. And if it was such a bad draft why weren’t there more Swedes Russians and Finns in the first round to further showcase that exponential curve?

    Got to make a new video. Shortly after this video was uploaded Connor Bedard was granted player exception status for the Regina Pats of the WHL. I had the luxury of watching this kid play from grades 5 & up. When he was in grade 7 he was playing scrimmages with the North Shore AAA Midget hockey team and with his size and speed he didn't seem out of place.
    North Shore / North Vancouver are well known for their success with hockey at the youth level nationally from Atom - Juvenile.
    In 2017-18 as a 7th grader (peewee) was promoted to the bantam AA team and in his 3 GP he had tallied 8 points and was promoted to the Bantam AAA team and piled 59G 46A in 41 games played, helped the North Shore win their conference and league helping them to the provincial championships where the coaches named him the A as an assistant captain and led all forwards in the provincials in ice time and ultimately ended 4th in points and 2nd in goals provincially as a 7th grader.
    In 2018-19 Connor Bedard as a 8th grader Connor Bedard got invited to go the the West Van A1 Academy Prep (Bantams) and played a grand total of 2 games recording 5 points before being promoted to the U16 team where he put up 64 G 24 A 88pts in just 30 games played before being promoted to the seniors U18 team where he then put up a staggering 43 G 41 A in 36 GP with the seniors helping them win their league and going to the provincial championship finals.
    This past season as a 9th grader he dominanted the Major Midget Elite Hockey level in B.C. And was the teams best player in winning the provincial championship, carried his team to the nationals semi finals and then later was named to the 1st team Canada Cup all-star game. The dude plays like a man already. Looking forward to you making another video adding him to the list. I can guarantee you'll hear the name Connor Bedard for years to come.

    CHL Exceptional Status Players is the Sidney Crosby Rule. Previous rule was any player that was classified as Exceptional was only allowed to play for his local Regional team. In Sidney Crosby case this would have been the Halifax Moose heads. Basically the Sydney was so good that the other teams rejected the rule and blocked Sidney from playing with Halifax as he would have played two season with Halifax before being drafted by another team. This was also due to the fact that Halifax host the National finals the Memorial Cup in 2000. In which they already had a stacked team and could have had an 14 yr old Sidney Crosby in the line-up if not blocked by the other team.
    While Halifax lost the National finals I am sure it could have been different if Crosby was allowed to play. Instead he was forced to play in NSMMHL since he was also banned from playing in the local Junior A league with Truro Bearcats other then two game emergency call up basis (loophole) and wouldn't be allowed to play Junior A for the same reason why he wasn't allowed in the CHL.
    This force Crosby to look at either playing Pro in Europe as an 15 yr old or head to Shattuck St. Mary's Midget Prep for a season before coming back to the CHL as an 16 yr old. The rest is history.
    CHL Exceptional Status Players replace the old rules, which a player must apply and be granted access to the league and be made available to all teams rather then the old rule were a player if under the age of 16 was allowed to play with local team only and the team applied for the exceptional status for the player.
    In short Crosby never applied for CHL Exceptional Status Players and was never denied but created the current rules since all the teams in the QMJHL didn't want to be embarrassed by Crosby and an already stacked Halifax team.

    I don't think the CHL is dying, I believe with the growth of the nhl world wide, there are other programs that have taken it upon themselves to increase their hockey programs. Also with the route to the NHL being more accessible to European players and the focus on training in the other divisions, I believe that you will see the a flattening of the curve. More Europeans and Americans will be drafted.
    As much as it pains me to say this, (as i am Canadian) but i don't think that Hockey is " Canada's Game" any more. I think it is more of a world game. We have an unprecedented amount of European players in the league right now and i am thankful for that. Hockey has changed over the years, but i love the speed of the game, but oh how miss the old style some days.

    i don't think the CHL is dying, but it's more like players from more countries are getting looked at- players from Russia, Sweden, Finland, and other, smaller European countries are actually getting scouted to get drafted. i think it has a lot to do with somewhat less xenophobia- like European players are no longer seen as "soft" and not dedicated to the game enough.
    on top of that, there are countries whose men's hockey programs are finally catching up to that of Canada's, so top tier talent isn't just coming from Canada anymore. there's also, of course, the NCAA, which notable players have chosen over CHL. and it's not just American hockey players choosing the college route anymore, there are Canadians who choose to play in the NCAA, as well.

    One thing that haven't been taken to account so much here is that the scouting has been increasing exponentially specially in Europe. Financially strong countries like German and Switzerland are on the rise. Finland and Sweden are producing like never before. Specially when you compare to the population of apr. 15mil. combined. Russia is producing still but now a days more and more young players are staying back home in KHL instead of going over seas. But all and all CHL ain't dying. Just more options for players. Swedish and finish top leagues have chosen to be development leagues with chances for youngsters to play adult games early in their careers. Slovaks dropped rough after Demitra and Satan generation. But showing signs of better to come. Czechia is on the rise again. The game of hockey is winning!!! NA don't have to worry! Most star players will still come from there due to amount of players and money put in to the sport from kid to NHLer.

He has the 3rd-most goals in the league over the past five seasons and the 3rd-most in the playoffs since entering the league, but the centers he's played with are Sobotka, Backes, Lehtera, and Schenn. the exception isn't something they use to say "hes gonna be the next gretzky" just something they use when younger players are ready to play with the older talent. I think in the early days it was meant to be used for the Tavares, McDavid, Crosby types but over time (whether that's because the CHL has learned more ppl buy tickets when they have an exception or if its a wealthy family can pressure the CHL to grant one). for the NY ranger kid who showed up at 250+ lbs, I don't think being an exceptional player hurt him. that's what happens in life. people mature at different stages, some don't start playing hockey as young, some meet a great coach or mentor along the way and so on. im sure everyones played with kids who were unreal at age 8-12 but by the time you go to high school, you were much better than they were.

    @zachcrouch9905 4 года назад

    I wouldn't say the CHL is dying, it's still turning out awesome prospects and will continue to be one of the top junior leagues that the NHL drafts from. In my opinion, it has more to do with the opening of Russia to the world over the past 20 years and the establishment of European forwards/defenseman such as Ovechkin, Malkin, Dahlin, etc. You have to remember, there were not a lot of Soviet born players playing in the NHL in the 1990s, of course there was Mogilny, Fedorov, Larionov, Konstantinov, etc. but there was not the influx of players from the Soviet hockey program, all these guys had to defect just to play in the NHL. It's not that the CHL dying, it's that there are more prospects coming out of Europe than ever before. I think what really needs to be questioned is the US Development Program, and how players coming out of the USDP tend to have more success in the NHL after playing a year of minor hockey; look at the examples of Auston Matthews and Jack Eichel, which will be interesting to see how Cole Caufield will turn out as a player since he is going the US college route instead of going straight into the NHL.

    Veleno was drafted into an already strong Saint John Sea Dogs team. So even though he had exceptional status. There were loads of guys filling the top 2 line roles. Its Not that his development wasnt great, it's just he was limited on icetime. The man then went to drummingvill to become a stud for their playoff run. To tip it off The only reason he is playing in the AHL is because he has to enter the Mens league a year yearly because of the exceptional status he was granted from the Q ! He will tear it up, when Detroit calls apon him !

The OHL is for players between ages 16-21 so by him being an OHL all star at 15 should that automatically put him on this list? At the time they were technically the OHA which is why I’m asking the question.

    The CHL's status is fine. The combination of CHL, college, and other locations is exactly the model of a system all sports should follow.
    It's a joke that the only reasonable way to get into football is to go to college. Many players aren't meant to be college students, and it's a cruel setup for those guys. I don't care if they get their college paid for - that should be for the players who want both worlds. You've got college basketball's silly "one and done" rule, and then the "three years" for football. The alternate, non-academic path is absolutely the solution we need.

    Tavares would have been so much better had he not been drafted by the Islanders. He single handedly lifted that Franchise out of the dumps (literally) at Nassau Coliseum to the point now where they can hire an A-List head coach (Trotz) and have successful seasons year after year. That would not have happened without Tavares dragging the horrible islanders out of the basement
    Veleno is not a caliber of a player that is represented in an exceptional player. Never showed the elite ability, and to me projects as a top 6 winger with good IQ

    I don’t think you necessarily have to become an NHL hall of fame talent just because you got exceptional status. The rule is in place for players Hockey Canada think have nothing to learn in their age group. I think dubbing every exceptional status player as a generational player is unfair. You’re taking a 15 year old and placing hall of fame expectations on him. Making the NHL alone means you’re an exceptional player and a world class talent, so I think becoming an NHL regular should be the bar for exceptional status players, not necessarily the next Crosby.

    The USHL/NCAA route is received more attention from scouts due to their different rules. NHL teams are allowed to wait longer to sign players from these american leagues, whereas a CHL player must be signed within a couple seasons or they lose the rights.
    Within the CHL, though, there are still problems. There are too many teams missing playoffs in the WHL, there isnt enough parity within the OHL, and too many imports are taking up slots from canadian players(esp goaltending) throughout the league. Finnish leagues in particular have become stronger, but the CHL also develops some of their top players for them. The CHL and shitty hockey canada have become complacent at the top, and don’t show signs of adjusting to the NCAA inside track with scouts, or upcoming competition from other leagues.

    I'll defend Sean Day, here. Still a really young guy with huge potential. A lot of people put the ECHL on the backburner, and that's pretty unfair, to say the least. Numbers are deceiving for him at the pro level, as his time in the ECHL last year propelled his game to a different level when he was recalled back to Hartford, and confidence started showing through. This year, despite having spent a good chunk of time in the E, his game has become more well-rounded, and he's developing into a very solid two-way defenseman. Still possesses a high-caliber natural skating ability, and has offensive tools too. The Rangers are stacked on defense, and Day might not be the best suit for them currently, but I'd be hard pressed to believe that with Day's mentality and skill, he won't someday don an NHL sweater - whether that is a Rangers sweater or not. People develop at different rates, but we're seeing a lot more positives than negatives in his development. Don't write him off just yet.
