    Has your team ever drafted someone that "fell" in their draft. If so, did they turn into massive steals?

    Pavol Demitra. At the 1993 entry draft he was rated as a 2nd round pick yet dropped all the way to the 9th round. According to rumours, all the scouts forgot about him. He was eventually taken in the 9th round when the Senators realized he was still available.

      I am skeptical that teams simply forgot about him. Teams make lists, they don’t go off their memory. There must have been a reason for the drop, even if we aren’t privy to it.

    “Nikita Kucherov fell in the draft”
    Don’t forget that drafting players out of the KHL is tricky, as most scouts don’t have the capabilities to and are inaccurate

    • @RobTalksHockey
      @RobTalksHockey  4 года назад +16

      Definitely. I will say that the u18s and and international tournaments in general are a huge indicator for NHL scouts. As they get to see them playing against other top prospects in the world, and a great tournament has proven to make a prospects stock shoot through the roof. And Kuch has 21 points in 7 games haha

      It’s not because they are hard to scout in Russia. The problem is that Russia remains a holdout in terms of signing on to the NHL player transfer agreement. This makes it difficult to come to terms with Russian club teams about bringing over the prospect, and of course with the KHL also being a top tier league, there is plenty of incentive for Russian players to just stay at home.

    Nick Ebert found out the hard way that the NHL’s old boys don’t forget. If they want to embarrass you with the last pick, they will; if they don’t want you to have a job, you won’t. Like you said, he had a solid minor league career. Prolly good enough to spend a few seasons on the bottom pair in the NHL. His attitude did him in.

  • @Rorschachqp
    @Rorschachqp 4 года назад +7

    Esposito dropped because between his draft combine interviews and scouting, they found he was a guy who didn’t like the spotlight and was totally void of leadership. Espo was supposed to be a Crosby-level talent but really withered in the leadership/intangibles department when compared to Crosby, who in 2006, was still fresh on the minds of scouts.

      In the 2012 draft, Vasilevsky was drafted 19th overall, Malcolm Subban drafted 24th overall, Korpisalo 62nd, Matt Murray 83, Freddie Andersen 87th, Hellebuyck 130th, Linus Ullmark 163rd, and I think that's all the goalies from that draft class that have seen NHL action. (source www.draftsite.com/nhl/position/g/33/2012/)
      Goalies are all over and I think they're the hardest position to scout.

    I have a video idea. Could you explain to people how the nhl draft works? for exemple, explain that a team can take a less talented player because he's either a Center, a D men, or has size. You could also talk about the ''russian factor'' that causes the russian player to fall in the draft.

  • @chrispswann6825

    How about a video of players drafted ahead of where they were projected? An example would be Detroit drafting Moritz Seider 6th overall in 2019 when most scouts had him projected 20th or later.

    With Espo it was quite easy to see why he fell. Once he was on his own, they realised he was not the go to guy and even by Q standards he was bad in his own zone and was viewed as a cherry picker

  • @pite9
    @pite9 4 года назад +1

    2007, forget about Esposito. Alexei Cherepanov had numbers similar to what Ovechkin had achieved a few years earlier in the top league, but during the draft a lot of teams seemed to be questioning whether he would ever leave Russia. He was projected top 5 but dropped to 17. Then he died 1 ½ year later as he was finally starting to look like a dominant KHL player. Who knows what he would have become.
    As for Pastrnak, he was just overshadowed by Nylander, and then you also had Vrana who was considered his equal. But I think many at the time didn't get how good Nylander was at the time, and ended up underrating all of them. But he was also kind of overachieving because of great mentoring by his father. Both the Nylander's had exceptional fitness and skating at their draft year. This resulted in Alexander who played in NA being a bit overrated, while William performed a bit better than you'd expect from someone of his talent level. But simultaneously the NHL failed to grasp how dominant he was. So in the end, he ended up being drafted at a reasonable position.
    But I've been following the draft fairly closely for around 5 years now and I think euro players are consistently undervalued at the draft. Sebastian Aho is a good example.

    • @MrSharkFIN

      Cherepanov died because of a heart disease and was later told that he had used some stuff. To make him perform better, yk.

    Pastrank was also extremely young when he was drafted. I remember them saying (when he made his bruins debut) that he was the youngest player in either the NHL or AHL. he was on a 100 point pace last season but fell leaving a sponsors dinner and tore ligaments in his hand / thumb. that's why he "struggled" in the playoffs. but anyone who doesn't have Pasta as a top 5 overall winger in the league is not paying attention. I remember at the time bruins writers saying he was as good if not better than seguin was (during the rookie camps the Bs do in the summer). I always figured he was overlooked due to the European bias some teams have. they think North American players will take hits, play tough and grind while Europeans will focus only on skill and flop around if hit. I believe that was a true stereotype at a certain point but most kids these days are playing and traveling all over the world if they have elite talent. so guys like pasta get used to the NA style and rink sizes. just a theory though.

    I remember seeing Esposito in an exhibition game at the local arena in 2005... Crosby's mind-bending junior career was still fresh in everybody's memory, and honestly, this then 16 year-old kid looked like he had similar potential. I'm not even kidding. I've rarely seen such a swift skater. The NHL scouts weren't wrong. If anything, Esposito left his own self down for some reason.

      Being from Quebec city, I've seen him play for the Remparts and wasn't surprised he wasn't drafted higher. The guy could skate but I thought he lacked in creativity and drive. The player from that team whose performance did catch my eye was Adam Erne and so far he's had a better NHL career than Esposito. So My instincts were pretty much spot on.

      Esposito didn't let himself down. He got injured. He tore his acl twice. Even with his draft fall, he might've still carved out a decent NHL career if not for the injuries.

    As a Capitals fan, it will always be Peter Bondra. 7th round pick, 156th overall. Was the leading scorer for goals, points, hat tricks, power play goals, and power play points for the Caps until that Ovechkin guy happened. 500 goal scorer as well. For the Sharks, right now I think of Ryan Merkley. Because of his anger problems, he fell to 21, but a lot of scouts thought if he didn’t have those attitude concerns, he could have gone as high as top 5 in 2018, and considered him to be the most talented defenseman in the draft behind Dahlin. Last season with London, he put up really good numbers, and he didn’t really have any major “incidents” with his attitude. If he fills his offensive potential, he could turn into one of the leagues elite defensemen, and he’s going to be a huge steal for the Sharks at 21st overall. Still too early to tell, but I like what I’ve seen from him. He’s open that he goes to therapy to work on his anger, and is trying to get better that way. I think that’s a huge step that a lot of these younger guys with “attitude” concerns don’t take.

    Joël Teasdale was ranked top-15 by Craig Button in the 2017 draft but went undrafted come the next Summer. He signed an entry-level deal with the Habs in 2019. For a multitude of reasons I'm still shook he got passed on for SEVEN whole rounds. 2015 Draft Travis Konecny was ranked as high as 11, citing his flashy goal-scoring and quickness, while Craig Button didn’t even have Konecny in his top 30 (ranked 33). Excluding Button’s assessment and averaging Konecny’s ranking among the rest of the seven scouts, he was the 14th-best prospect in the draft. Hextall traded back into the 1st round with the Leafs to take him 24th. Not a huge fall but he did fall nonetheless

    Probably the player I would choose for recent Red Wings drafts would be Anthony Mantha falling to 20th overall in 2013. His 260 career points in the Q were discounted as he was a man playing against boys (late year birthday?). Questions about work ethic, and playing against inferior opponents were the talk of the hockey forums back then.
    I Do not count Z or Dats in this as they flew way under the radar from the get go.

    John McFarland was expected to be a top-5 pick in 2010 after scoring nearly a point-per-game in his rookie junior season on an awful team. He never progressed past that point, and is now retired; playing only three NHL games.

  • @Sadokist
    @Sadokist 4 года назад

    2009 also had. Simon Despres. Fell to number 30 when he should have been top 10. Poor management lead to bad role assignment and injury trouble, otherwise he would be a top 30 defenseman.
    Also try to find a synonym for "however" - and a new way to say "next" - both are your crutch!

    LA picked up Gabe Vilardi, projected top five to top 10, in the teens. He’s now in the NHL and hopefully sticking. LA has a habit of picking up fallers with their non-top five picks. Arthur Kaliyev is another.

    Great idea!! Philip Broberg was projected 3d overall in 2017-2018. 8th overall isn't a big fall but still, I do think Broberg is the defenseman with the highest ceiling behind Byram.

    Colton parayko was definitely a steal for the blues but he only went in the third round because he played in a really small league that is often overlooked. The blues did get a steal though when lost in was supposed to be in the top five of his draft but broke his arm and was out a lot of the season and dropped to the 31st pick in the draft.

      @@RobTalksHockey totally and it was like us getting away with hoglander and Quinn once of which was mid first rounder that slipped to 40 and Quinn is a for sure top 5 or even top 3 pick if like you've said in past videos Montreal and Arizona didn't go way off board. That also give of 3 years of an ELC for flexibility when it comes to the cap considering we are gonna be in trouble for at least 2-4 years both because of covid and because of bad contracts. I wish the Canucks could sign both quinn and Petey for 9x8 but unfortunately this isn't NHL20 :( lol
