i'm 29 years old, and today is the day i learned that the Kung Lao they're referring to is another guy-and that it wasn't some mystical time travel thing that brought Kung Lao into Mortal Kombat 2. Thank you Tony!
Reptile wasn't originally in the film, he was added after test audiences complained there weren't enough fights in a movie called Mortal Kombat, that's why he feels rushed and disconnected from the rest of the film.

in the italian dub he actually says "fatality", i was surprised he didn't say it in the original as it would have made a lot more sense lol

I think you missed a very important and very obvious aspect of this movie. Shang Tsung tries to manipulate the best fighters to come to the tournament because he is using Goro to kill them so that he can capture their souls. The souls of great fighters will make Tsung more powerful.
Or use against in the final combat like the one's summoned to fight Liu.
Lui Kang isn’t the only liar, Shang Tsung is ALSO a liar, he said Goro beat Art with a flawless victory.
I assumed Shang Tsung's "Flawless" meant that Art could Could not make Goro fall down...evening with the punches and combo...now Lui Kang, failed miserably because he was getting knocked all over that place lol

The theatre went bananas when that statue turned into reptile. That scene and Cage V Scorpion were the best in the film
Sometimes giving an audience a few mysteries is good thing. Let the audience come up with their own answers or opinions instead of explaining every detail. This movie still rocks, and so does the soundtrack.

I always thought since watching as a kid that Shang tsung deteriorated at the end because he's so much older than he looks and when he died all those souls left that sustained his appearance and youth.

Okay look I pause the video 5 minutes and 33 seconds in to inform you Johnny Cage was based off of Jean-Claude Van Damme and one of John Claude Van Damme's biggest pet peeves was the people did not think he was an actual martial artist it made perfect sense to me that the character in the movie had this issue it was honestly the issue of many 80s action Stars people thought and still think that he was never a real martial artist nowadays you can check facts to a degree that is absolutely unheard of or at least was unheard of back when Mortal Kombat the movie came out yes nowadays you can check and see that he won multiple World Championships in actual martial arts tournaments back then all you had was the word of the person talking possibly an old black-and-white photo and nobody wanted to believe a guy that pretty with obvious background in ballet was a world-class martial artist... Mortal Kombat was originally supposed to be the Bloodsport video game but Van Damme didn't want any part of it so they made their own version of a Bloodsport game with no Bloodsport that kept them from getting sued by the people that made Bloodsport the final move in the movie Bloodsport is the split nut punch which was one of Johnny cages original from the first game special moves and the movie used in the movie to defeat Goro
With Johnny cage though, Master Boyd a.k.a. Shang Tsung in disguise, influences Johnny’s decision to enter the tournament. He’s trusting the word of his master who he respects and trusts his advice.
That reptile fight was the best fight in the movie though.

5:15 This was based on real life. In the 80s and 90s, many people claimed Van Damme was not a real martial artist and was in actuality a Ballet Dancer who was faking it.

What doesn’t make sense is the length of Goro’s torso relative to his legs. Who approved that design? He looks like the world’s tallest midget.
"you must kill Sub Zero with that which brings life" my favorite line in the movie. I love how Kitana goes out of her way to not just say water but still basically said water.
Her line actually was "to defeat your next opponent use the element which brings life"

Rayden told Liu Kang that Sonya has to accept his challenge or it doesn’t count. That’s why when she said “no”, it wasn’t a forfeit for earth realm.
That is also when Sonya had faced her fear, which Raiden mentioned earlier, trust issues. It was her trust that Liu Kang and Johnny will come and save her, that made her not accept Shang Tsung's challenge. Had she continue to believe that everyone was only going to get in her way then she would've accepted and lost.
Remove reptile? That scene was the only redeeming quality about that movie.

This was my all-time favorite movie when I was a kid. So it'll always have a special place in my heart. But all of your criticisms are spot-on. Let's hope some of these mistakes are fixed in the reboot next month.
One month later: this movie fixed a few mistakes from 1995, and made a whole bunch of new ones.
Not statues... Those are mummified bodies of previous souls consumed by Shang Tsung, reptile which is a generic term to classify a species is actually a chameleon which assumes the body it mimics... No... Wait... That doesn't make sense either... 🤷♂️😅

12:01 FYI: In the 3.0 version of MK arcade, where Reptile was introduced, a double flawless with fatality and no blocks at The Pit was all that was required to get to Reptile. The problem was that it was impossible to get to him as Sonya because her fatality involved using the block button. In the 4.0 version they reworked the code so that one could push block during the match and still get to Reptile just as long as their life bar isn't damaged. But they also added the detail of it only working if a random silhouette travels across the moon.

Great movie essay, loved it -- you raise a lot of good points. I did want to share some insight into some of your qualms.
There's a reason Shang Tsung has to seek out the best of the best (and by that I mean, Liu Kang). They are chosen by the Elder Gods as the best representatives of their realms. As host of the tournament, it is Shang Tsung's responsibility to seek out these chosen warriors and extend the tournament invitation to them.
How did they know Liu Kang could defeat Shang Tsung but Johnny and Sonya couldn't? They weren't just making brass assumptions. Raiden specifically mentioned, when asked why he wasn't talking to Earthrealm's fighters, "I have looked into their souls, and into yours. One of you three will decide the outcome of the tournament." You can tell he knew which of the three would win, but wasn't ready to disclose that yet. Shang Tsung looked into their souls as well -- and knew which one of them stood a chance of winning (i.e., Liu Kang). So when he challenges Sonya and Johnny, it really is an act of cowardice.
Most of this can be inferred from the subtext of the film itself, but it's reinforced elsewhere (i.e., the film's novelization, statements by the film's cast and crew, stuff from the original games, etc.). As your resident MK lore expert I'll by happy to go into more detail about any of this -- any time, anywhere!

The nitpicking is a bit much here. The film is far from perfect just like this video essay.
Its for fun. I thought moslty the same things while watching in the cinema back in the day having read the character profiles, comics and playing the the games the movie had so many weird flaws and plot holes to even a casual 90's mk fan. I still like it then and now. But it is what is and criticism is legit.

Reptile becoming "human" to fight Lu Kang didnt make sense, but a tournament between two realms one of which has magic ninjas and monsters makes perfect sense..👌🏽
from what I understand the Reptile and Scorpion fight were added after test audiences complained that the movie didn't have enough fights, which is why the Reptile fight feels shoehorned in. I could have done without the CG Reptile, but having Shang Tsung have the Humanoid Reptile ambush the heroes in Outworld would have been fine. But, the reptile fight imo, is one of the best fights in the movie, the actors put a lot of hard work into it. The actor who played Liu Kang broke his ribs when he gets thrown into the pillar in that scene.
Too me this is without a doubt the best live action movie based on a video game. The best overall film best on a video game is the street fighter 2 the anime movie

Johnny Cage wanting to prove he's a legitimate martial artist makes sense. In reality martial arts movie stars are always being called out as fake. Even Bruce Lee himself was. Anyone can be a bad ass in a fight choreographed for their victory. The question is can they defeat an opponent in actual combat.

The Shang Tsung fight is actually structured like a 3 round fight from the game and in the 3rd round he does achieve a flawless victory

I've decided that liu isn't a liar because they had their fight and made it up to the balcony and then round 2 starts when liu is by that light and goes ham on shang. So technically that final bout where liu kang goes ham is a flawless victory.

This basically became the model for the characters personalities. Carrie Hiroyuki Tagawa is still voicing Shang Tsung in the games. He has such a great voice. I will say Sonya was on a team,but she did leave them and went off on her own. So she hadn't quite learned teamwork though she really should have by then
My headcanon for the reptile thing (when I was a kid) was that the statue was an artificial outworld footsoldier. That in this instance, Subzero and Scorpion were made the same way with abilities dependent on whatever was placed inside the statues that made them (say, some sort of ice spirit and a demon as an example). This is why they have the same uniforms (but with the color swap) because they are all made from the same base form.

In defense of the shapeshift thing that would be one hell of a mind fuck. Imagine;seeing someone transform right in front of your eyes, Not just into someone else but someone that you once knew and cared about that is now dead. The pure shock of seeing that alone would make anyone freeze and question things.

as a kid I always just assumed the picture came from Scorpion upon his explosion and had it on him because he was tracking him.
Man, I got left out. I only got the cartridge and not the box or manual. Back in the day, you could get the games cheaper without the box and that's what most of my family did when they bought me games back in the Genesis era.
Also Johnny Cage very much wanted to prove he was a martial artist to other martial artists and what better martial artists to prove himself to then the best in the world ... that were involved in the Mortal Kombat tournament ... to be fair, the fact that he got to be involved in the Mortal Kombat tournament at all means he proved his point before he even fought his first fight the looks he got from the people on the boat were the only reason he involved himself in that tournament...

As a kid, we were disappointed because there was almost no blood. Especially, Baraka was my favorite, because TONS OF BLOOD (yes, he was in MK2). Mortal Kombat without blood was so rediculous in our young minds :)

2. When Liu Kang answers Johnny Cage about not knowing why he's so special, it's a question about himself. Because his ancestor beat Shang Tsung doesn't necessarily make Liu Kang special. It doesn't mean he doesn't know anything about Kung Lao.

One thing I always mention about Kano from the movie influencing the games, is that they made him Australian in them rather than a cockney/Londoner like the actor RIP
A slight correction: in the original game, any silhouette will do for unlocking the fight with Reptile. That being said, despite its flaws, I love this film dearly. While there might be some reasons to scratch your head script-wise, this film served as a great study in practical effects (a passion of mine), and the soundtrack and score were among the best ever.
The Reptile and Scorpion fight scenes were added after test audiences complained there wasn't enough fights. They shoehorned the CG Reptile and fight in to pad out the movie more, as well as extend the Scorpion fight. I really wish they didn't add the CG Reptile and just had a Human Reptile randomly follow and attack the heroes in Outworld.
I like to think Reptile’s random fight scene was added as a little fanservice moment referencing when he was an unlockable hidden character in the first game. Still awesome either way.

I just think that Liu knew that wasn't his brother, but he just got emotional seeing the "ghost" of his brother. I think that when Raiden talked to Sonya about teamwork, he was referring to Sonya constantly saying to Liu and Johnny that she's fine on her own. For Johnny Cage, I can see him needing to prove himself. He does look like a pretty boy. Kitana isn't a waste to me. Since she is the emperor's adoptive, I guess it would just look weird if she was just following Liu. Also, Shang Shung did order Kitana to fight Liu. Shang Shung is a bad guy. He thinks the rules don't apply to him. I have nothing else.

From my understanding reptile was added in there because test audiences complain that there wasn't enough fighting a movie about a fighting tournament to the death didn't have enough fighting in it thank God this new one has between 13 and 16 fights now that's how you script a movie.
Johnny Cage being called 'fake' is a reference to Jean-Claude Van Damme. People called him, and call him, fake, even despite evidence to the contrary. So that makes sense.

The 2021 'Mortal Kombat' movie?...
I have a little theory about why Liu Kang says Flawless Victory at the end. Shang Tsung vs Liu Kang fight was divided into 3 rounds, the first round won by Liu Kang after he defeats Shang Tsung's reanimated warriors, the he chases Tsung to the top of the arena where he "tricks" Liu and they start round 2 with Tsung winning after slamming Liu's head to the ground. Then round 3 starts, from what I saw, Liu doesn't take a single hit (blocked hits don't count because movie) and defeats Tsung by finishing him off with the fatality which in the games was a series of kicks followed by an uppercut that could trigger the pit stage fatality, the only difference would be the "fireball" at the end, and more punches than kicks. So, if we go by the 3 rounds format, technically Liu Kang got a flawless victory in round 3.

In this same spirit I would love to see a video analyzing how the opening of GoldenEye doesn't make any sense. What was Trevelyan's plan exactly? Did he want the chemical weapons facility to be destroyed? Did he want Bond to be killed? He could have easily had Bond killed, or captured without giving away that he was a double agent. Make it make sense.
Reptile vs Liu Kang was shot, because early screeners said there were not enough fights in the movie.
Also, Scorpion vs Johnny Cage originally ended in the forest. For the same reason as the Reptile and Liu Kang fight they added the fight between Johnny and Scorpion in "Scorpion's Lair"
Those are probably the reasons why the fights didn't make sense and reasons they put in some fan service like, Shao Kahn saying "Reptile" and Johnny giving Scorpion his autograph (MKII friendship).

The “flawless victory” line from Kang is just him copying Shang Tsung as he said it earlier, basically mocking him.
The Johnny Cage friendship thing is incredibly nitpicky to the point where it’s laughable.
Sonya being kidnapped is basically the story of MK2, she’s kidnapped to bribe the earth realm fighters in to accepting another tournament that takes place in Outworld. So this film loosely follows and references both games.
Again, the Scoprion and Sub Zero thing is just nitpicky.
Kitana is playing the part she played in the game. You reference Scorpion’s Revenge earlier, and she does the exact same thing in that movie. Be consistent.
Reptile is sent to keep an eye on things and is in the shadows throughout the first game, the film follows that. The fight is one of the best in the film, so the statue thing is forgivable. And drop the boner for Scorpion and Sub Zero, you didn’t get what you wanted, get over it.
Raiden, nitpicking again.
The aged Shang Tsung thing, again, they are loosely following both games. Shang Tsung doesn’t have to fight, he has people to do that for him, and Goro is a fucking beast, what reason does he have to fight when you’ve got a henchman like that? He recruits people so the tournament can happen. It has to happen. He picks Sonya because that’s the story of MK2 as I’ve said earlier. The deal is not void either, as Shang Tsung is still active in the tournament, he just hasn’t had to fight because Goro has been taking care of everyone, now Goro has been defeated, he can’t just go back to Kahn and be like “yo bro, Goro died and I didn’t wanna get ma hands dirty so I just left lol”
I always assumed that Liu Kang just took advantage of the rules of the tournament when he challenged Shang Tsung. Shang Tsung challenges Sonya, but she doesn't give him a straight answer because she's holding out for her friends to save her. He challenges Johnny because he's confident that he can beat him, but Liu Kang jumps in and issues his own challenge before Johnny could respond. I'm pretty sure that if Shang Tsung had refused Liu Kang's challenge, it would count as a forfeit. I don't think he believed that he could beat Liu Kang, but he was backed into a corner. At that point, his choices were either certain defeat or a slim chance of victory.
I love how Kano in the film has a cockney accent (a specific London accent) but Ed Boon thought it was Australian LOL
