Her voice control is fantastic. When she switches from being "sweet" to talking about money the overtones click on as if she'd pressed a switch. That's real skill.
I have been in love with this lady since I was about 8 years old more than 60 years ago. In later life I even became a millionaire to impress her but sadly I never met her!
What a beautiful vlice this lady had. I grew up with my parents playing her songs. Brings back bitter sweet memories of them when they were still here and the world seemed so much gentler.............
Dude it's been about a decade since you made this comment but I'm writing a book and i couldn't think of the word for the particular action a character does in one scene and it'd been bugging me for two days. I now realise the word's "snarl". Thank you.
I adored this lass in the 1950s when I was ten years old. I wrote a short essay on her struggle when she was younger and racially abused. My words were read out in class and my teacher, the late Clarice Harding, gave me top marks.
I'm just an old fashioned girl with an old fashioned mind Not sophisticated, I'm the plain and simple kind I want an old fashioned house, with an old fashioned fence And an old fashioned millionaire I'd like a plain simple car, a cerise Cadillac Long enough to have a bowling alley in the back I want an old fashioned house, with an old fashioned fence And an old fashioned millionaire I'll stay weaving at my loom Be no trouble to my groom If he'll keep the piles of money mounting In our cottage there will be A soundproof nursery Not to wake the baby while I'm counting I like the old fashioned flowers, violets are for me Have them made in diamonds by the man at Tiffany I want an old fashioned house, with an old fashioned fence And an old fashioned millionaire I'm just a pilgrim at heart, oh so pure and genteel Catch me in Las Vegas while I'm at the spinning wheel! I want an old fashioned house, with an old fashioned fence And an old fashioned millionaire I'll ask for such simple things when my birthday occurs Two apartment buildings that are labeled "Hers and Hers" I want an old fashioned house, with an old fashioned fence And an old fashioned millionaire I like Chopin and Bizet And the songs of yesterday String quartets and Polynesian carols But the music that excels Is the sound of oil wells As they slurp, slurp, slurp into the barrels My little home will be quaint as an old parasol And instead of carpets I'll have money wall to wall I want an old fashioned house, with an old fashioned fence And an old fashioned millionaire
The way she articulates and draws out/elongates her words - I couldn't agree more. My late grandmother adored this song, and listening to the playful, amusing lyrics, I can see why! It makes me quite emotional, listening to this wonderful song.
Autotune would completely fail trying to process this amazing tonal work. Throughout each phrase, she shifts steadily down in frequency at a varying rate while changing the vibrato at a different rate matched to the beat. It's like Jacquard; two patterns combined. The sound is different from the fancier version with the harpsichord, but I prefer this version; much more wicked... I wouldn't be surprised if someone with more detailed knowledge of her work was to say that she consulted with the TV engineers to know what would pass best on their reduced band-pass technology. Just wonderful!
I performed this song in drag at a scout gang show in 1969 when I was 13. I was in thrall to her then and still am. Unlike many of one's adolescent icons her reputation has not tarnished with time.
Unlike so many gay icons of that time she never turned her back on her supporters and as far as I am aware continued to support gay rights throughout her lifetime, Donna Summer could have taken a lesson in ethics from her
Julian Wall that's awesome Julian! :-) 'Spiritbear12' no one cares about your need to correct strangers on the internet. As if you took a negative from that post!
+Julian Wall Julian, do you see, as I do, the Marlene Dietrich influence in Eartha's total package? Her low register, for starters? Whatever, both she and Dietrich were just incomparable, weren't they?
What an absolutely gorgeous lady. What a unique voice, and what wonderful pronunciation. This lady was one of a kind, there was nothing generic about her singing. Eartha Kit was unique.
Eartha Kitt was a true Hollywood icon. She could sing exotic songs withpserfect pronounciation. Not to mention, Eartha was also a versatile actress. God Bless Eartha and We miss you.
This is so classic....I come back from time to time to hear her sing this song and it's always such a thrill to hear this rendition. She sings it to perfection and deserves a millionaire!
I used to be obsessed with her back in 5th grade and I still love her music today. She is such a legend and tbh I think there needs to be a movie made about her.
two apartment buildings for her birthday, instead of carpet money wall to wall WOW! this is really cute never seen anything like it and Eartha looked very nice
🗿 So when it comes to famous (American) "material girls," the top (3) that come to mind are: Mae West, Eartha Kitt, and Madonna. At least, that's how see itl 💝 (S.F.)
My mum and I always loved Eartha Kitt especially wwhen she purred this song so expertly. I also look up to her as a strong and beautiful woman, just like my mum, who overcame difficult odds in life to bring up their daughters single handedly. God bless you both and sing with the angels.
My late nan's all-time favourite, and I can see why! A beautiful melody, and lyrics full of fun and humour, just like her! I found a picture-sleeve EP with this and Santa Baby on it, and I'm over the moon.😊
I discovered a vinyl of this when I was aged 8 in my parents record collection. It fascinated me then, it was so different. Love her. Any interviews I've found of her she was a true eccentric: & very sexy.
In 1962 Eartha Kitt starred in the Swedish television programme "Kaskad", produced by Åke Falck. In that year, the programme won the Golden Rose of Montreux award for best entertainment programme. Among the Swedish artists in "Kaskad" (Cascade) were Lill Lindfors, Lena Söderblom and Jan Malmsjö. The previous year, the first of the The Rose d'Or Festival, the Black and White Minstrel Shown won. Google "Jan Malmsjo Lill Lindfors Lena Soderblom" for Swedish newspaper sources referring to this at the time of Kitt's death in December 2008.
***** Ooooh, spooky. Actually when I have too much to drink (which is um... well quite often) I get into comments and don't seem to be able to shut up! Im going to have to watch this. One comment a week perhaps! Cheers.
I will never understand how this failed to chart in the UK when the single was first released in 1958. I was 15 at the time and loved it because it made a refreshing change from all the rock 'n' roll songs around at the time.
I would have fangirled her so hard we would have shared a humble farm with my expired hubby's money. Away from everything except from her access to recording studios and the clueless representatives who thought I was her roommate *tips hat*
Her voice control is fantastic. When she switches from being "sweet" to talking about money the overtones click on as if she'd pressed a switch. That's real skill.

Hola
Two apartment buildings that are labeled Hers and Hers. Ha!
Myles JS It's funny and cute...lol.
The way she points twice at herself🤣🤣🤣
Love the way she snarls "Million...aire", suggesting she wants the million but not the millionaire.

Eartha was a real life Catwoman and how I miss her. Those so-called singers today would wither in her shadow.

The last bit was brilliant. She just wanted the millions, but annoyingly the millions had to come with the millionaire.
I love the way she says bowling alley.
Graceful Mango I thought I was the only one who loved the way she said that.
Doesn't she play the voice of the evil lady in The Emperors New Grove?

Eartha helped with my aversion to racism. As an eight year old I watched her sing this song, fell madly in love, and wished I was an old millionaire.
