  • Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. www.tytnetwork....
    Read more here: www.psychology...
    "A 2008 study(link is external) published in the journal Science found that conservatives have a stronger physiological response to startling noises and graphic images. This adds to a growing body of research that indicates a hypersensitivity to threat-a hallmark of anxiety. But why exactly would those that scare more easily tend to support conservative views? One social psychologist from the University of Central Arkansas, Paul Nail, has a pretty interesting answer:
    “Conservatism, apparently, helps to protect people against some of the natural difficulties of living. The fact is we don’t live in a completely safe world. Things can and do go wrong. But if I can impose this order on it by my worldview, I can keep my anxiety to a manageable level.” This could explain the two parties’ different stances on gun control. It only makes sense that those who startle more easily are also the ones that believe they need to own a gun.”*

      To be honest both sides have down syndrome. Liberals think having more than 2 genders is a thing and confuse Trump not letting illegal immigrants through the border as being racist. And conservatives think that guns solve all issues sometimes.
      For the study in itself I don't believe in it really at all because I've seen conservatives that have way more courage than any liberal ever could hence people in Afghanistan or other places who are mostly conservative fight people with 7.62 AK47's and have TOW missiles including dirty bombs, etc. Majority of liberal I see say they ain't doing shit while sitting on there ass at home eating cheeto's typing bullshit on the computer about retarded shit like politics lol.

      @TheIDGE 6 лет назад +5

      @Dank Memes - I think you are misinterpreting the study. Of course a higher %age of conservatives will join the military, they are afraid of and therefore want to kill the "enemy". Joining military does not necessarily equate to courage. I'm guessing you have some connection to the military which would make you see it that way.

      phila, liberals are very into diversity when it comes to skin color etc... the only diversity that matters is intellectual diversity. Shouting people down from talking, Violent protesting, labeling everyone that isnt like them racist, etc. Liberals are very friendly to everyone in their party. Black conservatives to them = race traitors, mob mind instead of individual thought.

    • @Solidsnaik
      @Solidsnaik 6 лет назад

      Sure, but you’d have to admit that liberals could be too idealistic and therefore unconsciously biased as well. On the extreme end you could have blind, self-righteous zeal from these same socially empathetic and reasonable people, who fail to recognize the values all humans share. Listen to the study described in the video, how would you categorize people who are split between flying and being invincible, and how concrete of a conclusion can we make from that? At best it proves our partisanship are the product of deeply-rooted psychological differences that are, to a degree, no fault of our own; just instinct.

      I think that this may be secondary. That is, fear (especially extreme fear) overrides empathy or subdues it in most situations (unless you are dealing with someone that could be described as a "hero" in old books and manuscripts...)

    • @veek.6463
      @veek.6463 6 лет назад +4

      That's coming next. They are still isolating the empathy gene in introverted and extroverted. It reads a little different in hose two types of wiring. They are straightening that out and then it will be presented. Can tell you we are seeing empathy gene highest in Canada and Finland. About 78% average. Low in places like Saudia Arabia- not even to 20% of the overall population. . America is interesting because it is a country of immigrants but so far it looks about like Trump's support numbers. About 40% lack it in America. But those are preliminary. I think we should test everyone for it and bar those who don't have it from public office.

    • @veek.6463
      @veek.6463 6 лет назад +1

      Leeloo- no he's right. You either have the empathy gene or not. And yes you are right that fear can override it but we need to get to the basis of it. For example, I was acquainted with a girl here in Denver who was shot at school a few years ago. She rode jumping horses as did I and I'd see her at shows. When her school was attacked, she walked out of a room to protect her classmates and tried very gently to talk with the young man she knew from a math class. She gently told him that she cared about him and truly loved him and she would stand by him and help him and please don't shoot. She slowly walked toward him with her arms outstretched offering to help him and please put the gun down. When she dot right in front of him, he shot her. Knowing her she was strong win empathy. She was sweet to everyone and didn't like to win because someone else had to lose. So there are levels to this stuff. Those with he empathy gene and extroverted in spades really should get some additional home room classes on reality of not being able to stop every tragedy and those introverted should some extra home room classes on self confidence. Hey get internally knocked easy and shy away. The kids without the empathy gene tthat have a lot of fear and pain really need help. These are he kids that shoot up schools we think. They are totally scorched from reality and suffer terribly internally.

      Most of everything in our day to day lives is human behaviour. It's something that is learned, & can be changed.
      When you start saying 'everything is genetic', you are implying that it's just how people are born, & cannot be changed, so don't bother trying.

      MrMalcolm900, I can tell immediately this study is frivolous. Most people exist in many places on the political spectrum. For example, someone may be liberal on abortion but conservative on guns. Also, they use guns as an example. Me owning a gun is not out of fear, it is accepting reality that there are bad people in the world. Just like when I lock my doors at night, I am not scared, just accepting reality. It is a safety net, no different than how liberals want more government for protection as a safety net.

    Aside from politics, this is from my personal experience. This incident happened during my graduate school and years after. I had two cats. One was a couple of weeks, as a kitten, when I adopted him. I raised him, loved him. He was spoiled, pampered and was also the apple of my eye. Since I raised him so well, he had an unbelievable trust in people. He will go up to strangers, like the mailman, telephone repairman, and be extremely friendly with them. I will take him out to walk on a leash or a boat ride and the same thing happened; he was very friendly with everyone he met the very first time. He can melt anyone's heart with his beautiful personality. He had a trust that a human will not harm him - since I never harmed him.
    Then I raised a feral cat. From the beginning, he was okay with me. I gave him food, love and all. But he was very hostile to most people. He will swat, hiss and attack them. In my assumption, that as a feral he was treated badly by humans in the street that he did not hesitate to show his hostility towards them. He also had an early demise from a stomach cancer.
    This is what the study may indicate. Republicans as a child are prone to violence and all. They do not understand diplomacy and that words have the power to change the world. Note: Gandhi kicked the 200-year-old British monarchy out of India without firing a bullet. The only thing the Republicans and the conservatives understand is that physical violence. They think everything should be done with brutal force. This indicates why their base seems to be one the lowest tier on the I.Q. scale. All human beings have a cognitive bias to a certain extent. The problem with their base is they do not want to hear another point of view and more gullible and prone to believe in lies from a certain number of people(the cognitive bias reasoning). They can be very easily be manipulated.

      @@dundundun430 Not happiness, but you can measure mental health, and liberals often do worse on that.
      Sympathy Liberals have is different from that of Conservatives, but that does not mean one part is less empathic. People are naturally empathic, regardless of politics. Christians give more to charity and adopt more, while atheists are more pro welfare state. Both ways are ways to help.
      I think Democrats have more sympathy for people that made mistakes (criminals, etc), while Conservatives are more empathic to people who want to improve themselves, but that is too subjective to measure.

    To be clear, I just saw a Ted talk about a girl, born in Norway but family is from the Punjab region. At age 15.5 years old she was forced to marry some guy back in Punjab province. She got away somehow, i cannot remember, but her sister had lit herself on fire b/c her husband was beating and raping her and the parents wouldn't do anything. An "honor suicide."
    Another friend of hers was killed by her parents for not obeying. There is a problem for Muslim girls in UK and EU. We cannot ignore it any longer and we cannot have it in the US no matter of they are Muslim or Christian. I know there are a lot of Christian teen girls out there who are forced to marry their statutory rapist b/c they ended up pregnant and the parents want to "save face" or the man paid off the family to avoid jail, and went to a neighboring state where marriage to a 14 yr old is legal. I can't believe in 2018 we STILL have people who think THEIR "honor" is tied to their family or another person, it's so outdated and wrong! If interested in helping these women, find the Ted talk video b/c she has a non profit to help these women get out. She had to leave her family and never see them again.

What I'm interested in is how this should shape the progressive message to make it more appealing to those who are fearful. They will unconsciously be drawn to that which alleviate their fear, which means if you can frame progressive values and policies such that they think these policies will make them safer, everyone wins.

    It could be that there is a stronger correlation between whether or not their parents are conservative and just teach that mentality to their children. At 4 years old, it is entirely possible that their parents have already installed quite a bit of the groundwork required for growing up a conservative, whether consciously or subconsciously. In other words, without them also looking into nature vs nurture, it is impossible to know which came first; inherit conservative tendencies or conservative indoctrination.

      I added a comment a lot like yours before reading down the thread. I happen to be a professional astrologer (and teacher), and I've seen a lot of evidence that the sign of Capricorn, or those influenced by Saturn (as dominant in their birth chart which acts as a blueprint for the unfolding destiny in a manner that simulates the way the acorn carries the blueprint for the mature tree) almost always take on very fear-based conservative perspectives. The home and its atmosphere, particularly if the parents follow fundamentalist religions definitely shapes the child prior to age four.

    • @katrinal353
      @katrinal353 6 лет назад

      You can't say that it is. The evidence does point to the sense of safety, regardless of unique unaltered behaviours, like the H1N1 experiment. You can't assume it's nurture or nature with that data (it probably is a bit of both), but you can definitely point to a fear/safety relation with these attitudes, and given the nature of these ideas, it makes sense.

    Checks out with my personal experiences as a conservative turned liberal. Grew up in a conservative household, went liberal as soon as I left, probably had been for a while. Regardless, that mindset, and those genetics, stuck with me through my life.
    Why am I so proactive about safety? Of course, it's _exactly_ because I feel threatened; because I am afraid of what will happen if a negative event occurs, and I'm not ready for it. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and my girl playfully teases me for being paranoid.
    Taken to its extreme, this mindset is how you get doomsday preppers, conspiracy theorists, and white supremacists that fear people who are different.
    But something to keep in mind is that this conservative fear is a *PERSONAL* fear; a completely self-interested fear. This is why there is so much ambivalence among conservatives, and they don't care until something personally affects them. Fear of losing their job, regardless of how unlikely it is, affects them much more than the less obvious, less personal fear of rising sea levels, or pollution affecting someone else.

However, What I understand is that those who are conservatives are those who are fearful but have not been forced to question their fears by EXPOSURE. That’s the problem. That, and the problem, issue, of privilege and what their expectations have been. So sad!

    You could also spin this the other way around. Liberal/progressive minds can also be too welcoming and trusting of others, even to their own detriment. Being aware of this can make us all a little more inclined to listen to the other side. We all have different things we bring to the table. No one is more right than the other.

    Interesting study but useless analysis of it by Cenk here. Based on the same data you can turn things around and argue that liberals have a underdeveloped 'fear centre of the brain' leading them to behavior and positions that don't properly take into account necessary self-preservation. What is a more interesting look at the information from this study is to take a step back and look at how different hardwired attitudes towards life which have developed through evolution are reflected into contemporary political landscape. What is the role for these different biological attitudes for social cohesion? You could make a argument that through evolution there is a certain diversity in what we would these days call political ideology, these different attitudes to personal safety, community etc arguably have had a important role in the functioning of society through the ages. The question is where that leaves us now, many contemporary societal problems seem to suggest a certain shift has emerged between the functioning of our biological development through evolution and modern day society, look at the reproduction statistics for an example. I'd suggest some of the examples of political excess, extremism, we see these days might be found in understanding this 'gap' , if the biological functions no longer function in their normal way within society, or through modern understanding and use of media are being manipulated (politics of fear) radical developments can be expected, now with the new knowledge we are gaining, what do we do with it? Argue that this biological make-up is a flaw, and correct it chemically? Maybe we are getting to know ourselves to well, acting In persona Christi.

      If you do not understand scientific processes then turning the data around makes sense. The thing with being human is that an ability to live in a large range of environments is clearly an advantage, Humans are also able to live in large groups. Not everyone in those large groups have the same view of the world. So there is a mechanism for people to get along. This study suggests one such mechanism. You should probably read a little wide and not just read things that reinforce established prejudices before arguing about biological differences.

    • @bas8116
      @bas8116 6 лет назад +11

      @nelson this was more or less the point that I was making but I am guessing you did not read beyond my first sentence. I thought the way the study was presented by Cenk here lacked imagination as he was just using it as a stick to beat conservatives with, I'm not conservative myself but if anything this shows the complexity of humans living together in groups and I was making the same argument as you are, there are reasons why people are different for society to function as it does. I do wonder however how badly this knowledge could be misused. Look around at the comments here, presenting people with a biological inclination for conservatism as having some kind of defect, that kind of thinking is pretty dangerous.

    • @bas8116
      @bas8116 6 лет назад +11

      Relating fear as a mechanism of self-preservation is quite supported by the relevant literature you'll find. I was not, as you seem to think trying to make a argument for understanding the results of the study in this way. The study shows a relation between people who are pre-disposed to fearfulness and a inclination towards conservative positions. Which is both interesting and not complete news, its a relation that has been showed before. All I was trying to illustrate was my opinion that the way it was presented here in this video by Cenk was one sided and leaping to conclusions, I felt that it was presented as if this was some kind of 'defect' relating conservative political positions to nothing more then a biological deficiency. Which I happen to find a dangerous over simplification of what the study presents.
      If you think I'm some kind of conservative trying to defend my ideology you are wrong. Neither is true. I do wonder what your intentions are, hot headed are we? Going around calling people idiots because you don't agree with them. Not very classy.
