The headline here is unfair. I am progressive but I want to represent this research better. The research measured extremism and conservatism as two different things. "If our mind tends to react to stimuli with caution, it may also be attracted by cautious and conservative ideologies. If we struggle to process and plan complex action sequences, we may be drawn to more extreme ideologies that simplify the world and our role within it." So then a mind may be prone to react to stimuli with caution and be conservative, but the same mind may be able to process more complex ideas, and thus not be an extremist.

What is interesting about science is how it can help us. Not be used as a weapon. If it is true that a certain type of brain is more prone to right wing extremism then that does not mean it will automatically follow that they become far right extremists. Some are more prone to be alcoholics but that does not mean they will be drunks. Done of the most progressive people I know are former victims of personality cults. There are certainly other factors. Yes we have always had militias and such but before MAGA we didn’t really have it at this level. So then the question becomes what do we do with this knowledge and how do we prevent extremism? Other countries in Europe have a left and a right, but they are not nearly as polarized as we are. We cannot pretend that their conservative brains are somehow inherently different, This is the conversation that needs to be had. Look at how many of them voted for the worst person ever for potus. This isn't normal, most of these ppl weren't born this way. It's not only the "training" (upbringing and child-abuse religion), it's a result of multiple factors. I'd wager the majority of them were raised in poverty or not much better. With poverty, children don't eat so well, they eat more crap food (including lots of refined sugar), which is so bad for the body, brain and nervous system. As a kid raised in poverty, I remember not being able to concentrate when reading or when listening to someone speaking (but still sharp enough to make good grades). Impoverished ones are more likely to live in more polluted areas, drink lower quality water... So many things that will ill-effect their minds and hearts. I don't even remember much of my childhood due to trauma (with poverty, children are more likely to endure multiple types of abuse). It wasn't until I started working as a teen, having my own money, and buying my own healthy foods, that I started coming out of that "fog" of eating low-quality foods (and eventually learned to avoid the hell out of mainstream docs ... going on a quarter of a century without them). Plus, when a poor kid already isn't very healthy, you add to it all the stupid things mainstream medical quackery does to them. For example, a well-fed kid might take your beloved science juice well (body can more easily process it) whereas an unhealthy (especially still-developing) kid is going to have very bad reactions to their mainstream quack meds (I know from lots of experience). But of course, those reactions may be delayed, and oh-my certainly not attributed to your white-coat gods (cha-ching matters, heh). Again, it matters how we raise our children. If we don't make them our top priority, we're not going to get off this runaway self-loathing/world-destructive train. I really feel many of these "stupid" (and heartless) ppl weren't born that way. Also note, as nutty and heartless as they can be about many/most things, they aren't wrong about everything. it comes to mind that former Q-anon guy you interviewed (former police chief, as I recall). He said some things that were good/right, that you agreed with, but overall it still seemed like a lot of crazy was running around in his head, like all the dots didn't quite connect. But he didn't seem totally stupid, even kind of articulate. I feel if he, like many, had been brought up in a different environment, he would be a different (better) person. Job One, as a society we've got to realize that teaching religious sh*t to children (brainwashing) is abuse. And at the very least strongly, relentlessly, counter it in any and every way that we can. Make the parents responsible when a hate-taught child harms another. Also realize that poverty tends to create traumatized, emotionally-screwed, and seemingly stupid ppl. AND that when a child sees how we as a society treat our ppl (homelessness, enslavement via unconscionably low wages, and so many injustices going unpunished), it teaches them that human life isn't valuable. Certainly not over money. More than from books, children learn from what they see us do.

@Gotta Pee BRB A quote from the study itself. "Political conservatism was best explained by reduced strategic information processing, heightened response caution in perceptual decision-making paradigms, and an aversion to social risk-taking. These three predictors were consistently implicated in the general political conservatism factor, as well as the specific political-ideological orientations studied, such as nationalism, authoritarianism and social conservatism. These data-driven findings are remarkably congruent with existing theoretical and empirical accounts within political psychology and also add important insights. Firstly, the finding that political and nationalistic conservatism is associated with reduced strategic information processing (reflecting variables associated with working memory capacity, planning, cognitive flexibility and other higher-order strategies) is consistent with a large body of literature indicating that right-wing ideologies are frequently associated with reduced analytical thinking and cognitive flexibility. Additionally, conservative political ideology was characterized by a diminished tendency to take social risks such as disagreeing with authority, starting a new career mid-life and speaking publicly about a controversial topic." Maybe you should read the study before trying to claim what it does and does not say.
@Gotta Pee BRB Firstly, if something is subjective, then it is opinion. Secondly, your opinions mean nothing as your only evidence seems to be a biased opinion from events seen through biased eyes. Just conservatives unwilling to do anything to keep them out of the hands of those who shouldn't have them.

Liberals excitedly watched Perseverance touch down on Mars last week, and are eager to learn more about the evolution of our solar system. Meanwhile, Conservatives believe the universe was created through literal magic by an invisible man who lives in the sky. The study seems accurate.
Seems accurate to me as well. I don't understand people with no curiosity about the wider world and the universe. I watched the Perseverance landing with a great deal of interest and hope for the further exploration of space. Even enjoyed footage of the new JPL command center. It's a big universe out there and it's fascinating.
@The Blame Game Of course my comment paints with broad strokes, as there are conservatives who are not religious and liberals that are. As for Elon, he's been vocal about being socially liberal and fiscally conservative: "To be clear, I am not a conservative. Am registered independent & politically moderate. Doesn’t mean I’m moderate about all issues. Humanitarian issues are extremely important to me & I don’t understand why they are not important to everyone."

Gotta Pee BRB I wasn’t suggesting Dems aren’t susceptible to conspiracy beliefs, but QAnon belief is in a class by itself. Those other ideas are very “real world” possible even if unlikely. They don’t require leaps into supernatural science fiction horror movie territory, like belief in literal cults that worship satan and torture and kill children so they can drink their blood in rituals, cults so powerful they can make all surface evidence of these acts, including the victims, disappear. And I’m not even getting into the adjacent concepts that have to some degree been absorbed into the QAnon umbrella, such as David Icke’s claims that elites are actually shapeshifting reptilian aliens.
Gotta Pee BRB My unscientific take is while that may have been true in the past, now there is renewed interest around David Icke’s shtick stemming from his Covid claims and the rise of QAnon, so his audience is probably skewing far more right-wing, Trump supporting, and Covid denying. Again, unscientific.
The Blame Game Probably not, but again, there’s no reason to believe anything supernatural is going on at Bohemian Grove, or related to satan worship and human sacrifice. It’s weird for sure, though. Probably the reality behind it is pretty stupid. Like some eccentric frat boy shit for extremely rich and powerful people.
Gotta Pee BRB They were always with us but there were a lot fewer of them. I’m old enough to remember life before the internet, and I remember being in bookstores when I was a kid and there were sometimes small sections devoted to books written by people promoting conspiracy theories, usually mixed in with the “End Times” prediction books by extremist Christian authors. There were newsletters and indie magazines and radio shows for people to share this kind of stuff. But the internet made conspiracy theories explode. David Icke started his grift writing books before the internet but his “fame” occurred once his message spread online. And QAnon as we all know is a uniquely internet-born form of madness.
This certainly could use further examination... Cause if it's possible to spot some signs and figure out what drives the folks more vulnerable to extremism, it would work wonders in devising ways to diffuse and help them. I dunno, that's my optimistic impression of this kind of study...

Our left-wing advocacy for the right to abortion has to do less with controlling the society's gene pool than with ensuring good parenthood. "If our mind tends to react to stimuli with caution, it may also be attracted by cautious and conservative ideologies. If we struggle to process and plan complex action sequences, we may be drawn to more extreme ideologies that simplify the world and our role within it."

Hypersensitivie Amygdala.
People who beat people to death then take selfies with the dead body smiling....they don't just get humane one day. These people have been left alone to breed. I have been screaming it; these isolated spaces need quality mental health, even if we need to give them tax breaks or make it a part of receiving government help, food stamps etc...
PLEASE PRESENT MORE STUDIES LIKE THESE FOR CONVERSATION. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THIS.
I like you guys but the title is misleading for a number of reasons:
1) This study isn’t about what being conservative does to your brain.
2) It’s about the psychological profiles of right wing extremists
3) Not all conservatives are extremist
4) Not all conservatives are intellectually inferior
I’m afraid you really let us down on this one, you guys.
I hope you don't like air travel that much, because the vast majority of airline pilots are conservatives. I haven't met one that was fearful yet.

They are conservative so conserving is what makes them less fearful. Risk taking is also black and white. from my experience, they don't think that risk is actually controllable by them. Virginia Commonwealth University Professor David Golumbia, who recently published a book "The Politics of Bitcoin: Software as Right-Wing Extremism," is blowing the whistle on the kinds of far-right ideas and conspiracy theories that not only inspired cryptocurrency's creation, but which are now trafficked, sometimes unknowingly, by many cryptocurrency boosters on both the right and left.

@Gotta Pee BRB how so, stated the facts pretty much how they are in the report, and then gives his opinion on those facts. What are you saying is a misrepresentation of them?
Additionally, conservative political ideology was characterized by a diminished tendency to take social risks such as disagreeing with authority, starting a new career mid-life and speaking publicly about a controversial topic."
Maybe you should read the study before trying to claim what it does and does not say.
@Gotta Pee BRB Firstly, if something is subjective, then it is opinion. Secondly, your opinions mean nothing as your only evidence seems to be a biased opinion from events seen through biased eyes. If you can get data to back that up, I'd be willing to read it. All liberals I know have no problems with guns or ownership (most own at least one). Just conservatives unwilling to do anything to keep them out of the hands of those who shouldn't have them.

You can eliminate ignorance through knowledge via education, but that does make people "smarter". It may make them more knowledgeable. You might move your IQ a few points, but it isn't based on education.
But at least people can learn to be more logical - including asking the right questions, taking a hypothalamic pause before answering (take the hormones and emotion out of it), and having logical debate instead of insults.

I would LOVE to see this study zeroing in specifically on QAnon believers.
The Blame Game Sure, guy
