So much of her performance is inaudible full of extreme subtleties exaggerated diction, shortened lines...and all those Dugazon chirps and sudden masculine tones. It’s a terrible performance and an amazingly yet oddly crafted fascination. Despina is a very strange role when it is sung by a mezzo soprano or a dull soprano. Like all of the soubrette soprano Rosina Storchio roles in Mozart anything less than a bright pretty voiced soubrette is a gamble. This is so cartoonish is hilarious.
By your comment then we can imply Bartoli's intention was fully accomplished! Making a cartoonish hilarious character of the flagship of the Classic Opera, the role of a servant that is as innocent as witty, with the delicacy of a young lady, yet the artifacts of mannish double sense.
@@LPCLASSICALespecially not to despina. despina is a soubrette, it‘s incredible to make a mezzo sing a soubrette that‘s too much and not authentic. not even her looks suits the role
I have to agree even as I'm also a mezzo. Just compared to Kathleen's who sounds like she's effortlessly tiptoeing on the notes , the voice is too heavy for all the jumping needed.
The MOST. SUPERB. DESPINA EVER!!!
Agreed :)

Does writing that comment make you feel superior? Last I checked, she brought a smile to our faces every time (well, most times) she sings Mozart.

Have to agree. I just don't think her voice is suited to Mozart.
