For this, you need a one-in-a-century voice, and for good reason, too: When Mozart wrote the music, it was already the third collaboration with Lorenzo Da Ponte (who wrote the libretto). After Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, he knew exactly who he would get to work with, and could adapt the melodies to match with the special talents and strengths of his ensemble. The role of Despina went to Dorothea Sardi, who had already sung the part of Cherubino in the premiere of Figaro. Mozart did a lot of that; the Night Queen from The Magic Flute was basically tailored for the role of his sister-in-law, Josepha Hofer. So Kathleen Battle had caught a supremely difficult task - not only fill the shoes of Mozart's legacy, but also that of the singer Mozart had thought of when composing the piece. There is a reason this part is sometimes given to mezzo soprani, because it is so damn challenging and you really have to look for someone exceptionally willing to go for that particular role.
It really isn’t that demanding a role. Many first time singers sing it to get accustomed to be the stage. Almost all of Mozart’s other female roles are much more demanding than this one. Sure it sits low, but the orchestration in the arias is very light.

Vera interprete di Mozart....meritava molta piu' fortuna di quella che ha avvuto. Ma rimane una grandissima interprete di Mozart, per me di questo autore la piu' grande.
Ho scoperto da pochissimo “Così fan tutte” e mi è piaciuta tanto che ho cercato di renderla più appetibile ai miei coetanei, facendo un po’ la buffona in un video. Ascoltavo questa esibizione in loop quando scrivevo la sceneggiatura! Ho inserito nella descrizione il vostro video così che possano sentire questa registrazione! Che tu l'abbia scoperta da poco non è un problema, ma che tu subito ne scrivessi la 'sceneggiatura' è un problema. La 'sceneggiatura' la scrissero nel 1789 un certo Lorenzo da Ponte e un tale Wolfgang Mozart. Forse ti sfugge.

@Robert Lee, Countertenor yes this is true. She became "The Battle" during the 1983 performance of Arabella with Kiri Te Kanawa as Arabella. Battle wanted the optional arias of Zdenka restored for that particular production, but Kanawa had suggested that the opera be performed without them-keeping the focus on herself. Thus, it made Battle real ill and caused major tension, as both singers literally versed and battled in singing against each other and was literally trying to out sing one another during their parts. Battle had even called Kanawa an "Ugly big sour cow" behind stage... and the history stems from that and Battle has been difficult ever since that.
