This aria is a prime example of the mediocrity that pervades many sections of Mozart’s operas. The aria is actually fair compared with the embarrassingly-banal second-act aria ‘Una Donna’ etc. [which used to be cut in many productions and still should be]. Despina is in the character mold of the traditional clever and spirited maid, a dated cliché that is no longer interesting [if it ever was].
I love Despina's deep cynicism about men. Ainhoa Garemendia is just perfection in this role.
She's cynical, but she's spot on (and I say this as a man).
