On a server I used to play on before planets existed in the game it was a heavily modded server in the matter that it was testing out a multiplayer mod that allowed the game to surpass it's usual problems when many people were on one server. I think at it's height we had over 300 players. Idk, we had 40 in the group I ran with on the server and without the limitations of many of the games simulation issues we were able to build a ship large enough that we turned into 3 bickering factions and almost never saw one another because it took too much time to get to the middle point let alone any end point. How it worked was back in the day if anything passed thru a gravity field it could break the speed limit of the game. If you connected a landing gear to a stone then this would allow ships to break the games speed limit too. So for a large ship it would either have a pod designed into it's structure or if it was with our group one would be attached. The pod connected by an arm to the ship would sit in the center of the gate station and a signal would be sent down the line to all rings and the next stations till your destination to confirm that the configuration was set up and there were no known blockages. Once that was done the gravity generators would turn on going the direction required on the station and rings and your ship would be launched faster than the speed limit allowing for very quick travel. Once you began to reach your destination the rings and gate station would have a gravity cradle that slowed down the speed you were coming in and then stopped you in the gate station so you didn't have to do any work. We made this for anyone on the server to use as long as they used it properly. Of course many stations would be attacked, thou we did find out the only way to sabotage someone in travel was to change the rings or stations.
