- Ta’ameya is an Egyptian street-food staple that is considered the precursor to falafel. It's made with fava beans, not chickpeas, as well as leeks, coriander, and spices and eaten in an Egyptian flatbread called aish baladi. We headed out to Zooba, a Cairo-based street-food chain in New York City's Nolita, with RUclipsr Karim Jovian to see how it's made and try it out.

Nice to see him said "Bismillah" right before eating
I'm Egyptian so I'm glad that there's a place to get fresh ta'amiya
The word "falafel" is a Coptic word and means many beans :)
In Egypt they use both words ;)
Only Damn alexandrians use flafel
The rest use the word ta'amya
@@mahmoudanas6220 I'm an Indian but even I use Tamaeya.
@@natalkumar6132
Exactly
That is not true "Falafel" is the plural of the borrowed word "Filfil" which mean "long pepper" in Arabic, Farsi and Sanskrit this word "Filfil" originally comes for the Aramaic word "Pilpal" which mean in English "small round thing".
While "Ta'amya" is derived from a diminutive form of the word "ta'am" which mean "food" in Arabic and the word "Ta'amya" can be roughly translated in English to "a little piece of food" or "small tasty thing".
Also only in Alexandria they use the word "Falafel" the rest of Egypt call it "Ta'amya" another thing that I find funny is in Alexandria they also call a type of hard cheese "Turkish cheese" and the rest of Egypt call it "Roman cheese" which is funny because both are wrong this type of cheese is made locally and never came from the Romans or the Turkish.
I just found an Egyptian eatery in my hometown and I want to go so badly to try Ta’ameya 😍
We need to have more Egyptian Restaurant and street food shop in downtown Minneapolis,MN🤤
I have never heard of this and now I want to consume it.

😂😂😂😂 lol tired of it
"We're never gonna call it Egyptian Falafel ..." but it's called Falafel in Alexanderia and many other cities in Egypt.
Looks like American Egyptians have more pride
I think he was speaking in regards to this particular food. Not falafel in general lol
@@briannarabadi4630 this particular food is Falafel too. I think his point is to seem different to American customers who already know Flafel. So he claims that it's different by giving it a different name!
Actually Flafel is made in Egypt from Fava beans called Ta'miya in Cairo and some other cities, but called Flafel in Alexanderia and northern cities. In Lebanon and Syria it's made from a mixture of chick peas and fava beans together and called Flafel. In Jordan and Palestine it's made from chick peas only.
To me the best is from chick peas, it's lighter, fluffy and crunchy.
@@Scho-penhauer in Jordan I enjoyed the falafel more because if the chickpeas...ya Allah they have the best crunch and best flavor....I'll save the fava beans for my maqlouba lol
alexandrians and other cities dont count theyre posers
Can we just appreciate the fact that at 4:20 Karim took just the slightest of pause to recite Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim (In the name of God, the most Gracious, the Merciful) before start eating the food! Absolutely loved it!
In alexandria we call it falafel but in other citys like cairo they call it tamya
The master chefs on the streets of Egypt never use a scooper.
They dip fingers in water, shape a ball and press it with Sesame seeds, then drop it in the oil without touching it.
Very nice, however I went to Egypt many times and you are not indicating the fava have to be raw and without the skin. I loved it and I love Kosheri. You are all very pleasant. Thanks
I am really happy that you made a video about something Egyptian because I am Egyptian ❤️❤️❤️and if anyone wants me to tech him or her some Egyptian words just comment on my comment and I love how the girl can actually speak Egyptian words right 😁😁😁

4:20 bismiallah rahman al rahim
It's so delicious
Ta3miya is falafel... in Cairo it’s called falafel in Alexandria it’s ta3miya... but both places still call it both names. Egyptians invented falafel back in ancient times and it was always made with dried fava beans or broad beans. When the Islamic and Ottoman Empire expanded through the Middle East it became a favourite across all the empire but due to lack of broad beans they improvised and used chick peas in countries that had lots of it and here we are today with videos of people pretended to know something “different” when they’re actually referring to the original!
This is my favoirite breakfast as a egyptian
Who like village food
❤ Grandma's Village ❤
Good to know that Zööba has franchise in the US.
Am watching one now , am Cameroonian working with an Egyptian ,
I'm from Bahrain.. We a ta'ameeya shop in almost every area :D
Bty falafel is an Egyptian recipe with fava beans but Syrians sometimes eat it and make it with chick beans Christians in Egypt invented it to be instead of meat during their fasting period and the national breakfast is(fool and falafel)
I love it 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😊😊😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍
Nice video but @Karim Jovian was wrong.
Balad means country, so baladi means country-y (like salt-y) so it's like native to a country, not a neighbourhood or a city.
Since the dish is that old, what did people use to make it before electric blenders?
I love food insider
I wish I could eat that in my city.
What!!? Is that how you say falafel? Who knew. I've been pronouncing it "fa-law-full" since forever.
No your right , it just depends on where you're from I personally don't like the way they pronounce falafel,! I was chef at a greek restaurant and they just say falafel and other places pronounce it falafel, it just depends on where you're from that's all,! Just FYI! 👍🏻😁
No Egyptians call it falafel but Americans can’t pronounce it they say it wrong and it’s very irritating
@@clear9978 I was a chef at a Greek restaurant & they didn't pronounce it like that , even when they were speaking Greek they didn't say it like that, I think the way you pronounce it is irritating,! I've never heard anybody else pronounce it The way Egyptians do, & I've traveled around a lot, SO LETS JUST AGREE TO DISAGREE, OKAY! 😁
@@mzpinkeyez7806 stop trying to argue and just agree that you pronounced it wrong
@@ghostechful who's arguing,?!? and it IS pronounced differently everywhere,!! Do you travel,?? Have you've been outside your country,?? Have you falafel anywhere else,??! but it makes my ass burn…
Ta'ameya is in Cairo and other Egyptian countries but in Alexadria is Falafel!!!

So delicious food. See you well.
The real question is how to keep them from falling apart when they hit the oil 😭
Well, its a paste so it stays together then the outer layer gets fried as one piece
@@mero1444 that's what I thought until they dissolved in the oil.
@@bricansa they dont lmao
don't used canned beans because they won't hold together that well. Use soaked beans instead
Bridgette! Make sure youre using a binder. We use one egg in our house. Hope that helps :)
karim jovian? that youtuber?
Yup :)
@@KarimJovian ahhh you noticed! :D
Wait, does taameya meant the little green fried circle things, or the overall whole thing that wraps around it with the additional veggies and sauce? Cus the lady calls it taameya sandwich so it confused me.
Taameya is the Little fried patty, but in my familiy we call the whole Sandwich also Taameya. Ether way, people are gonna know what you mean:)
@@nadiaz3393 Oh ok! Thank you! :D

Its like Eqyptian fuul or the other one hummus. They are different but the same
why are they trying to be quirky by not calling it falafel? Egyptians themselves call it falafel sometimes,it's an interchangeable term.

What goes in the sandwich along with the t3maya? Looks like two different sauces
In alexandria they call it falafel and I think it's the original name
Ta’ameya
Can you look more at Spanish food please?
No regional accent whatsoever until...
Falafel.
That’s how you know for sure she’s an authentic something or other.
For the first time she is in the right place
Only just scoops it out from the grinder.
"How am I doing?"
This man looks to be a giant compared to then
Oh cool so it’s falafel
The origin is somewhat true but not totally. Falafel is a coptic word that means "that which has a lot of ful (fava beans). And that's where the word originates and has spread to the surrounding countries. Ta'meya is just an arabic word that has overtaken the original but in some places such as where I'm from in Egypt they still call it falafel
To be honest it's falafel because we make it out of (fool) which is fava beans but we well never call it falafel in Cairo and let the Alexandrians win 😂💕
amazing heartburn reflux
It's like sex you enjoy it but wouldn't like the aftermath with falafel it's a gas factory
I think I made this before and it all just disintegrated when I dropped in the oil , I had to put the mix in the fridge for like a hour probably solved
Its vadai in tamilnadu, india
I am an Arab and thought that طعمية is the same as فلافل 😂!
@Manal Marzouk okay thank you I thought I was stupid not knowing this difference 😂
it’s different. ta’ameya is made of fava beans, but falafel is made of chickpeas. that’s the difference.
Manal Marzouk ما انا مصرية وعارفه ان اسمها كده فاسكندريه😂 بس برضو بتفرق.
As an Egyptian, they are not the same
MON no, Jordanian, they are not the same dish, but they have a similar taste.
Falafel is tamaya. The people from alenderia call it falafel. It actually comes from foul " fava bean"
I am Egyptian and I don't know how to make tamia either
Baladi means organic
Karim Jovian is damned gorgeous. Why are Middle Eastern men so beautiful?
It's Falafel 🥙
