  • Ta’ameya is an Egyptian street-food staple that is considered the precursor to falafel. It's made with fava beans, not chickpeas, as well as leeks, coriander, and spices and eaten in an Egyptian flatbread called aish baladi. We headed out to Zooba, a Cairo-based street-food chain in New York City's Nolita, with RUclipsr Karim Jovian to see how it's made and try it out.

That is not true "Falafel" is the plural of the borrowed word "Filfil" which mean "long pepper" in Arabic, Farsi and Sanskrit this word "Filfil" originally comes for the Aramaic word "Pilpal" which mean in English "small round thing".
While "Ta'amya" is derived from a diminutive form of the word "ta'am" which mean "food" in Arabic and the word "Ta'amya" can be roughly translated in English to "a little piece of food" or "small tasty thing".
Also only in Alexandria they use the word "Falafel" the rest of Egypt call it "Ta'amya" another thing that I find funny is in Alexandria they also call a type of hard cheese "Turkish cheese" and the rest of Egypt call it "Roman cheese" which is funny because both are wrong this type of cheese is made locally and never came from the Romans or the Turkish.

Actually Flafel is made in Egypt from Fava beans called Ta'miya in Cairo and some other cities, but called Flafel in Alexanderia and northern cities. In Lebanon and Syria it's made from a mixture of chick peas and fava beans together and called Flafel. In Jordan and Palestine it's made from chick peas only.

Ta3miya is falafel... in Cairo it’s called falafel in Alexandria it’s ta3miya... but both places still call it both names. Egyptians invented falafel back in ancient times and it was always made with dried fava beans or broad beans. When the Islamic and Ottoman Empire expanded through the Middle East it became a favourite across all the empire but due to lack of broad beans they improvised and used chick peas in countries that had lots of it and here we are today with videos of people pretended to know something “different” when they’re actually referring to the original!
