Edgar is so different from Johnny. Got to meet Edgar back in about 1969 at Aaron Russo's Kinetic Playground in Chicago. He was playing with Johnny, and these guys were my heroes, because I was totally into blues at this time. After the show people had filed out, and my friend and I were still hanging around inside, and Edgar was sitting there with his black girlfriend by the snack bar. I will always remember the contrast of their intertwined fingers as I approached him. He was really friendly and shook my hand. I was 16 years old.
Johnny: But I got Mona Lisa on my Kiesta
Dear Edgar .. Ever since i was a a teenager back in early 70's .. i have always loved your song 'Autumn' and still play it to this day! .. Im now 55 :)
I agree i am now 55 and i first heard him in 1974 he has been with me the hole time
Robbie Park, don't forget that Dan Hartman in the EWG wrote and sang "Autumn," along with "Free Ride." I always loved "Autumn" as well, and I'm a year younger than you. "Autumn" was a regional radio hit in New England for a long time because Hartman refers to New England in the lyrics.
That whole album is fire! 🔥
What an interesting man and talk about having something to say, Edgar had been around for a long time and has played with some of the best musicians of our time. Not only has he seen the history but he has been a big part of it. Luv ya Edgar and keep on rocking.
He is always so interesting & gracious in his interviews.
I wish he’d write a memoir.
They r both geniuses NEVER gave BLUES a chance well now I listen to TOBACCO ROAD EVERYDAY it moves my ♥️ & soul and I squeeze In FRANKENSTEIN LIVE & then I take a FREE RIDE with u so amazing I need this in my life forever until I go home THANKS ☺️ SO MUCH 🥰
A ton of talent in one family.
We mustn't forget, everybody, that all of Edgar's original bandmates - Dan Hartman, Ronnie Montrose, and Chuck Ruff - are no longer with us. They all contributed equally with Edgar to the EWG's great sound. Life in rock'n' roll, like everything else, goes on, and Edgar has reason to be cheerful, but I miss those other guys. Great musicians and songwriters! R.I.P., Dan, Ronnie, and Chuck.
Rick Derringer
Jerry Weems too!!
What a nice guy.. blows me away... love his music.. and Johnny too ...this dood is historical.. one talented MO FO. !!!!!!
Saw this.amazing musician back in '73 on Don Kershner's Rock Concert and again '74; amazing then, amazing now. Thanks Edgar and Johnny for more than you know---including the best memories!
I have seen live every combination of the Winter Brothers bands and Derringer with and without them.Always great some of the best shows.I`m 59 and still play their music regularly. Edgar and his music has a special place in my heart.
johnny and edgar: the coolest brothers in rock history.
Maybe his albinism is the reason, but Edgar looks fantastic for his age. And what a nice guy!
Actually they have no pigment in their skin and eyes and really need to stay out of the sun but that's all. He probably lived well and looked after himself but being an albino wouldn't have any bearing on his general appearance. Just look at his brother Johnny who hasn't aged well at all, it shows because clearly he's had a lot more fun than Edgar.
He looks like he’s 40 here. If that
Great interview!! Edgar seems like a nice guy
A legend no doubt ... he's the best saw him more than once he rocks
Edgar Winters and his brother Johnny our Legends unbelievable awesome musicians and singers
So many of us, here in The Great City of RENO, NEVADA, Chuck Ruff's hometown, miss him greatly !!!!! He was such a talent and still, an inspiration, to us
and people worldwide, so thanks to his awesome character and R&R personality and one of the BEST DRUMMERS of all times...love you EDGAR, SAMMY, BILL C., GREG GOLDEN, RICK keep on rockin' DERRINGER !!!
What a BAND, that live forever, like all you CHAMPIONS of Young true ROCKN ROLL...Right..? MAX VOLUME ??? THE VERY BEST !!! Honored, to say it lightly.....
Gosh I finally hear your voice thanks for sharing 🥰
Phenomenal talent!
Always love me some Edgar...
Class act, ultimate showman, Doug Rappaport(guitarist) is fantastic!
What a great profile with Edgar Winter! He is so open and personable, and I believe that's because he is a Texan, born and raised. That's the way we do it! Edgar, you may remember my cousin, Tracy Birdsong? RIP. He lived in the same neighborhood as your family, right around the corner a few blocks. At any rate .. I saw Edgar and Rick in '74, front band for Foghat. You are quite the gifted musician, a real rock and roller!.. and you always bring a rock and roll show! I've enjoyed your music for decades, and I'm glad to hear that you intend to keep it coming! "Keep Playing That Rick And Roll" 🎹 🎤 🎷 🥁 !!
He is a real musical genius. ☮️💟
This guy is every bit as brilliant as I imagined him to be when I happened upon the Frankenstein video and witnessed his musical ability. I use music to ease PTSD symptoms and Edgar Winter Group is now one of my go-to bands!
I can picture little Johnny Winter jamm'n out on a little "firebird" ukaleili and yelling his famous yell but in a kids voice. Thank you edger and Johnny for all the good vibe's.
My favorite song by Edgar Winter.
DYING TO LIVE
Mmm
You know I've heard it said there's beauty in distortion
By some people who withdraw to find their head
Now they say that there is humor in misfortune
Sometimes I wonder if they'll laugh when I am dead
Why am I fighting to live
If I'm just living to fight?
Why am I trying to see
When there ain't nothing in sight?
Why am I trying to give
When no one gives me a try?
Why am I dying to live
If I'm just living to die
Yeah
You know some people say that values are subjective
But they're just speaking words that someone else has said
And so they live and fight and kill with no objective
Sometimes it's…
What a cool guy Edgar is!! Very neat interview!!!!
Edgar's pleasant, easygoing personality certainly shines through in this interview. "Frankenstein" is an outstanding, innovative piece of music, but I always thought, contrary to what Edgar says here, that the late Keith Emerson of ELP was the first rock musician to play a synthesizer as a lead instrument. ELP's first album was released in 1970, and their second album, "Tarkus," was released in '71. Meanwhile, The EWG's "They Only Come Out at Night" was not released until '72. Anyone care to comment?
the question is 'what was the first song to feature the synth as a lead instrument', well consider the following:- daily nightly by the monkees 1967, switched on bach by wendy carlos 1969, sun ra on my brother the wind in 1970, tangerine dream on alpha centaur in 1971, hugh banton from van der graaf generator on album h to he in 1970, also mort garson the zodiac cosmic sounds 1967, i am not sure when pink floyd starting using synths, i am sure there are many musicians i haven't mentioned here.
Edgar's first album Entrance blew me away as a teenager. Already sophisticated and multi-talented, his musicianship far outshown Johnny's which also blew my mind. He, Edgar, suffered from older brother syndrome, really far surpasses him to my mind, in the final analysis.
I don't think he claimed to be the first to play synth in a rock band, did he? I heard him say he was the first to put a strap on a keyboard and make it mobile on the stage
Enjoy your refreshing candor and as an ambassador and prodigy both you and your brother an incredible life's journey. God bless Sir and family.
grew up in old caldwood in Beaumont Texas i remember seeing you and your brother on your English racer bikes and your parents were on my paper rout your mom was such a nice person to me i will see you in concert at the golden nugget Saturday
The best music I have EVER heard Edgar Winter play,
was on his live concert album called "Roadwork". It
was absolutely incredible! It also featured Johnny
Winter and Rick Derringer on their incredible guitars,
and every band member was singing and playing beyond
belief. Check it out.
As far as "tone" Edgar is by far my favorite Saxophone player. I wish he'd work on an instrumental jazz, pop, blues album featuring him on Sax as his main/only instrument. All of his Sax work featured on Todd Rundgren's "Initiation" album is superb! But then I wish Todd would work on an all acoustic release without relying on drums, synths or electric guitars. Acoustic bass and/or upright bass would be cool. It'd be awesome to hear some him performing acoustic songs in either a Studio or a Live format recording in a duo or trio, etc. type of setting.
Love Johnny Winters Highway 61 and mean Town Blues don't take advantage of me I'm a stranger in this town Good Music Man
😍!
Johnny 🙏🙏🙏
Never heard Edgar talk so much. I'm surprised that he does not have a thicker Texas accent, whereas Micky, has an obvious New York accent. Also good that Micky shut-up and let Edgar talk, which most interviewers find it difficult to do.
Edgar seems to be a genuinely nice guy. Brother Johnny seems to be as well, but they are two very different personalities .
I've read his brother Johnny Winter's Biography, and I must say that Edgar and Johnny seem to be polar opposites.
Edgar genuinely loves ALL sorts of Music and also loves to perform and entertain - while Johnny really only wanted to stick to the Blues and only played Rock-oriented songs to generate record sales so that he would have the money and prestige in order to pursue his Blues Projects.
Johnny didn't seem to enjoy performing for large crowds as much as Edgar and he didn't want to expand his 'Musical Repertoire'.
Johnny was also a long term Opiate Addict, who could never completely stop and get clean - while Edgar doesn't seem to have those same Addiction Issues as his brother.
Johnny was NOT a good influence on many of his band-members, who seem to have developed their own serious Opiate Addictions and died early or killed themselves.
Ode to Harry Rhodes the inventor of the electric piano parlayed into synthesizer minimoog and guitar electric piano hybrid keytar thus a Rhoades Scholar of Rock. Cheers Sir and family.
I talked to him on the phone back in 1995. It was a real surprise.
I'd love to hear Edgar chat about his time with Jerry La Croix
is good
Edgar is a smart dude like his brother Johnny.
And if a strap on a keyboard dont work, I'll play a sax too. 😂
The interviewer comes off as very impatient. Like he wants Edgar to give shorter answers so that he can talk more or ask more questions. Just let the man talk, dude...
I'm still irked that Johnny and Edgar were not in the Woodstock movie but Shanana was.
Edgar, We Need to jam with Rick Derringer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like Johnny, he seems more real to me. I guess Edgar had to outdo his older brother Johnny who was one of the best blues guitarists in his generation, hence the multi instrumental stage presence. All through his career he has had to follow his big brother. It's a tough act to follow.
Both seem(ed) very humble people. Their musical journey is very interesting and inspiring.

Wonder if he is still into Scientology?
