    16:30 Oh boy, the SS3 shotgun.
    Not only does it magically fit 10/15 shells in its magazine, the model for said magazine is just a cut off stanag from the Assault rifle.
    The mag well is also just ripped from the rifle, so it says "5.56" on the side.
    Oh, and the art book for SS4 still mentions it's shotgun having a 10 round mag, so thats your fun fact of the day (unless they finally fixed it)

    Love these Feature videos and really appreciate all the effort you put into them. I don't usually watch videos this long, am more prone to skip through them until i find a segment that interests me, but so far both of your Feature videos kept my full attention the entire time. And i say this as someone with diagnosed attention deficit disorder. Props to you, mate!
    There's actually more to the stone tablets than you might initially think, since they actually refer to the relationship between the Sirians and the Egyptians. The gods in this case were actually the Sirians, which were stated in Serious Sam 1 to have been revered as such. They also make mention of the Sirians leaving Earth and warning humanity that if they were ever to "sail to the stars" they would awaken the wrath of the One Infinite. The One Infinite, the same title Achriman and the propaganda in Serious Sam 4 used for Mental.
    Also if you listen closely during Sam's call with Quinn after the first generator is powered up, you can actually hear HQ cheer in the background. That's a neat little detail!

    Serious Sam 2 was my first serious sam game, and remains to this day my favorite ever out of the series. I love SS First and Second Ecounter, and SS3 as well (because of the mods). But I will never understand this hatred towards SS2, for me it is a brilliantly made game and very underrated.

      @kuba4ful 3 года назад +23

      I won't go into details, otherwise this comment would be too long. But in short, one of the main reason people don't like SS2 is because it has too many stuff for it's own good. Like, it sounds really weird, most games would benefit from bigger rooster of enemies and weapons. But not Serious Sam. Because, what main series games besides SS2 do best is subtly teaching players it's mechanics.
      A player in his first hour would just try using whatever weapon has equipped to whatever enemy charges at him first.
      A player after one hundred hours will assess the situation, target the most dangerous enemy available, change to appropriate weapon and kill it first.
      It's weird how everyone that put some hours into main series games knows to pick rocket launcher (or sniper rifle) against the green reptiloids and how many shots are necessary to take it down. Same with using Cannon against werebulls, double-barrel shotgun for kleers etc. Everyone that played one of these games for at least ten hours knows many combos like these.
      Now, tell me, how many combos a player will know after beating Serious Sam 2?
      It's weird saying this, but the main games are pretty tactical. Meanwhile, Serious Sam 2 is just a mindless shooter, kind of like Painkiller.
      And, before someone jumps on me, there's nothing wrong with mindless shooters. They can also be fun in their own way. The problem here is - it's a Serious Sam game without one of the core mechanics of the Serious Sam series.
      That's one of the main reasons Serious Sam fans don't like it.

  • @ORLY911

    I feel like SS3 would've been leaps and bounds better if they just didn't make a few intentional design decisions, one, overemphasis on hitscan enemies, two, reducing the laser gun and sniper to barely ever used secret weapons that you wont have ammo for to be viable, three, designing some areas to work in mind ONLY using the rocket launcher, as the game does not give you ammo for anything else, forcing you to pick up more and more rockets from the infinite rocket crates, ammo management irrelevant, five, the tentacled witch thing locking you in place on sight and having invulnerability periods, finally six having those crappy monkey alien sections that contribute absolutely nothing to the game.

    • @Tyrian3k
      @Tyrian3k 3 года назад +12

      There's so much more that can be said...
      Like the lack of creative secrets areas, some of which were literally just a single pill around a corner that doesn't even trigger anything.
      Then there's the bland atmosphere of the world. Grey-brown city to grey-brown desert to grey-brown temple structures, reflecting the modern military shooter component it had.
      The choice of style for the pump shotgun, pistol and rifle were just bland and the reloading was completely unnecessary.
      The three major boss fights were *all* awful. The first two were the same damn space ship, which is essentially a worse version of the worst boss from Second Encounter.
      The last one is straight-up unintuitive with no hint on what to even do to kill it. Without looking it up, I never even realized that there's a damn jetpack and those metal rods only kept me from looking for it because they practically told me that they are the solution, but didn't tell me how they were the solution. Needless to say that they were an awful way of doing a boss fight to begin with. And once you know how to do it, it's a breeze. I'm not even sure you actually need to fire a single shot to kill him.
      It says a lot when the most engaging (mini-)boss fight was the Biomech Major.
      The amount of smoke that is kicked up, especially by explosions is downright ridiculous and makes it seem like all kamikazes now carry one smoke bomb and one regular bomb in their hands.
      The glory kills were executed in an absolutely awful manner and could vary from completely OP to completely suicidal.
      The humour was pretty much dead. Almost everything was either a recycled one-liner from a previous game or plain bad like Sam talking about sticks of dynamite when using C4 charges. That's like eating a pizza and saying how tasty that hamburger you're eating is.
      Serious Sam 2's humour went for quantity over quality.
      Serious Sam 3's humour had neither quantity nor quality.

    I think the reason why Mental decided to scrap the concept of his forces having the SBC Cannon was because of the massive friendly fire there would be. Imagine having a large horde just for it to dissolve after one of your units fired a cannonball, decimating most of their allies.

    It seems like BFE is trying to represent First Encounter and Sam 4 is trying to represent second encounter, in terms of the locations and colors, and they both use a track from their respective game in the final level(Dunes in BFE boss fight, Grand Cathedral on From Earth With love) also every final level since Second Encounter in the main games is attempting to be a Grand Cathedral successor in design and gameplay. BFE's final level feels a lot like Grand Cathedral but has a very similar final boss fight to First Encounter.

    Great video Framerater.Also,here are some stuff i have noticed and/or wonna share with the community:
    1)Fusion has faster reload.You can't reload cancel by starting a sprint but you can reload cancel by faster weapon switch
    2)Regarding the rocket launcher secret in no place to hide: you can either climb up and jump over the wall to grab it and use the rl to destroy the wall or simply use the rocket launcher from the first level to destroy the wall as well.By doing that you save c4 (saw dickmccool doing it the guy who managed to beat vanilla bfe serious 100% speedrun in under 3 hours and ss4 in 4)
    3)I actually enjoy the dark bride fights.It testes your aim,awareness,and rewards players who can aim fast or control the situation while in ss4 they are a complete joke that can be killed in 1 sniper headshot
    4)Surprised how you did not mention that bfe ladder animation surpasses the one in ss4 in every single way
    5)You don't have to climb down all the way down for the Vista/sniper secret in power of the underworld.You can do the source/goldsource trick: jump down and before reaching the ground climb up the ladder by spamming E/use key or simply move towards ladder
    6)Instead of using the sledgehammer/axe to destroy wooden doors: position yourself so that when shooting with the singleshotgun all the pellets hit the door.Its quicker and more efficient
    7)Regarding weird audio/voice sound from john j dick in Jewel of the Nile,as he (voice actor john) stated in reddit ama: he doesnt know why it sounds like that.He recorded the jotn files in same way as he did for bfe so i guess something went wrong when implementing the files or in post processing? I don't know
    8)It is possible to beat the game without taking a single damage from enemies.At least i know that the first 9 levels can (serious difficulty).Safe to say,the rest of it can be done as well.

    Great video! Love the longer chapter-based feature format, and doing it in seriously-chronological order is a real clever idea. SS3 is unfairly maligned but not TOO unfairly, Croteam had surely many opportunities to look at the feedback they'd received on past games and decide if their SS3 was interpreting it too literally. Even the 'least good' Sam game is still one of the best first person arcade shooters out there; to me, SS3 holds the 'least good' title, but this video demonstrates why both parts can be true!

    2:00:40 I think I know the explanation behind lore inconsistency concerning Highlander Reptiloids and Raahloom. When Jewel of the Nine first came out for original BFE, Raahloom didn't have NETRICSA entry(the very name of it was found by digging through game files). Some time later, Solais - at that time just a modder - released a series of SS3' Workshop addons titled "Ultimate Resource Pack", that, among adding multiple new enemies and their variations and other stuff, gave Raahloom dedicated NETRICSA entry. It's the same one that is seen in Fusion.
    It seems that, when working on Fusion as part of Croteam, Solais decided to add NETRICSA entry on Rahloom from their mod to the game. I mean, it makes sense, but it does also create a minor lore inconsistency, as you pointed it out. Well, it can be hand waved as either a small retcon or BFE taking place in parallel timeline.

  • @InfernalMonsoon
    @InfernalMonsoon 3 года назад +8

    Really enjoying these features a lot and it's good to see that your love for Sam hasn't been permanently shattered despite Croteam's growing ineptitude, increasingly selective listening of feedback and just generally losing the plot with this series. I honestly hope we get a full or at least a soft reboot of the series or at least get a more retro style FPS if the indie series continues after Tormental instead of getting a fifth game continuing down this path. Considering how 4 released even though I still liked it, I don't see that happening for a while - that's probably for the best. If you get through the mainline series of games, would you consider features for the more meaty indies like Bogus Detour and Double D?

    • @FrameRater
      @FrameRater  3 года назад +5

      I think that a full reboot of the series could work, but it would need to evolve the formula quite a bit. Unfortunately Croteam seems demotivated to make the necessary changes. Not to bash the company, but I think what's best for the series is to give it up to another team at this point.

    • @InfernalMonsoon

      @@FrameRater Might be for the best, considering they're more interested in games like The Talos Principle these days. I imagine Flying Wild Hog would be Devolver's next pick but I'm personally not the biggest fan of their work. Considering the liberties and completely unfocused directions they took with Shadow Warrior, I feel they would be a poor choice!

    I think the headcanon for the series' continuity should be thought of this:
    SS2 is a sequel, but to the Xbox continuity. TFE and TSE's Xbox ports were given a wacky, cartoony modification to the story & style, and you see gameplay footage of TSE's Xbox version in the intro of SS2. Thus, you could see 2 timelines: the original and the Xbox one. Next Encounter may likely also take place sometime in the latter.

    I hate that the way Sam is modelled in this game it makes him look like, rather than having a bulky and muscular neck, he just has no shoulders, like his arms are hanging to the sides, it ruins the impression of a manly badass that Croteam no doubt were aiming for. he just looks like that virgin walk meme

    • @blueshit199

      frankly I liked this game better than TSE, as for Judy Mental, I think it may make sense that Mental created her in his biolabs as a clone of himself should Sam succeed, and named her Judy Mental because by that time he knew what humanity called him, and picked a human name for her as a sick joke. As is, I like it, it's a nice little bit of abstract humor for the end of the game, that goes perfectly with the idea of destroying Earth using its Moon, it's crazy while keeping itself tonally serious, it's not like SS2 which is way too in your face and outright idiotic, or SS4 which tries way too hard to be hip and self-aware like a Marvel movie

Although i disagree with some of the things that being said in this video (i hate machine gun's reloading and how it feels out of place, considering the crates with infinite ammo and the fact, that majority of other weapons dont need reloading), i still respect author's opinion and the way he presented that. One of the best Serious Sam content on youtube. Cant wait to see same FrameRater Features on the remaining games of the series.

    I was surprised how many secrets were in the building you fall on at the beginning. There's one in the Broken Wings chapter I think you didn't mention. When you're entering the long corridors to reach extraction point, you can skip the entire corridor section filled with blue soldiers and kamikazes. Just before you get inside the first Courtyard, there's wall on the left with a bush or something breakable, can't remember. Behind that is a vent. you can somehow open this vent in the level. The vent takes you behind the container from which the first bull appears.
