Happy big 22nd birthday, Serious Sam! Feels so nice to finally get this project done after so long. Sucks we couldn't work with the original draft anymore, but I believe this is a pretty good alternative.
Now for some bits of trivia that didn't make it to the final video:
Final Preparations - Not only did it win Gamespot's GotY award, but 11 others as well, including Christian Computer Gaming. So Christ himself approves of it.
(If you watched the Storyline vid) - Story so Far - Sam's only 21 years old and his old nickname was the Serious Machine. Not only was he captain of his own ship and an officer, but also a leader of Sam's Seven superhero squad; which may now be what was AAA during Sam 4. He is what he is now not just due to his trauma from triggering Mental, but perhaps the drugs given to him during his treatment, untested plants from planet Vernera. General Wilson and major Kowalsky from the old story could also be what eventually turned into General Brand and professor Kiesel, although Kiesel does make note of a Kowalsky during his interview being asked about the HAARP. No idea what became of major Willowby.
With all the names given to Mental, there are also 2 other names for the Time-lock. Gana-Og and Urnpool.
Hatshepsut - 13:08 these so-called Bighead's internal names are Mental.. rather sus.. These Mega Fans were either active forum members on CT's official site or positive influencers, and every one of them say their real or forum names; but only in Classic as the HD versions only make them say "Hello!"
14:18 Few of the enemy noises stem from just 1 sample of a lion, them being the Gnaar, Kleer, Reptiloid, and Marsh Hopper. Even the eventual Khnum uses it too.
14:34 whatever that hole was, it isn't present in the Alpha or Fusion. In Revolution, it was at least given some sort of purpose for unlocking an achievement.
In HD, if you walk out far enough past the new heat barrier, you noclip through the floor and get teleported to outerspace and are softlocked there.
Sand Canyon - 16:53 some of these one-liners are still referenced to this day, even the recently released Siberian Mayhem.
Tomb of Ramses III - 19:14 well he's more than just the last of the Pharaohs. If you read what people deciphered about his story, and re-read the whole Hatshepsut text Netricsa shows, you can see the connections why Croteam chose him. Seeing the decline in Egypt and the wars.
20:07 interesting note that Sam 4's Netricsa description of them still mentions some being able to fly and go invisible, yet none have ever been shown.
Valley of the Kings - There might've been plans for a Playstation 2 port as well, as Roman loved the concept of being able to port PC games to console without having to sacrifice much. Climax, the ones who made Next Encounter and Advance, are the only ones who did bring a Sam game to PS2.
21:49 I feel like this was a mistake of Croteam putting 2 different spawns that coulda been meant for different difficulties so close together, but they kept it in due to how funny it was.
22:24 they sure are amazing creatures. :)
22:43 Typically in all other versions of the game, you alone had to be the one to destroy it to prompt it. Once the Highlander spawns, the entire statute (including base) is destroyed immediately so you have less of a chance of hiding.
24:19 or in the case of HD, it opens up a portal so you don't have to worry about the wonky physics. You don't even need to blow up the statues to access it as the rocks covering it can also be blown up. And as a side note, all of the 4 statues in the Fire Element's room are required as well.
In Alpha's Tomb of Ramses II, there's a similar concept having to blow up statutes to progress through it. Maybe this secret took inspiration from it?
25:32 it may not exactly be the case as the text written for it was manually inputted from Kowalsky (or I guess Kiesel now) before he came through the Time-lock. We can see an example of a message being hand-written in Sam 4 if you look at Ugh-Zan VI's description (thanks Aziz, whoever you are).
Moon Mountains - This and Sacred Yards are the only 2 levels in the official mainline games to be considered secret levels. However, in Sam 2, there are internal/scrapped references for other secret levels too.
27:31 PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, CROTEAM, BRING MY BOYS BACK😭THE SIRENS FROM THE LAST HOPE ARE NOT THEM!!
28:31 not sure if I can really count that as 'electric' rather than toxic. The animation more looks like they're throwing something from their mouth. And seeing as they're known to be eating things like rotting corpses and literal garbage, I'd assume it'd be very toxic.
Oasis - 30:47 it's not the trap pill on the right what triggers the Bouncer, but rather the lone armor shard in the room to the left
31:14 I wanted to feel like it changes depending what difficulty you're playing. 'Who wants some' for the easier ones and "Let's get serious' for the hard ones.
31:53 it would've technically been the EDF shoving equipment through the Time-Lock that you weren't able to bring with you due to the amount of mass affecting where it would end up, hence why everything is scattered around. Though as the case with Sam 3 and 4, I guess we can now assume it's Future Sam.

Thanks for adding the rest! In regards to Oasis, you can see the pill activating the bouncer at 31:03. Just tried in Fusion and Classic, turns out the sound attack secret is only needed in Classic.

      Dunes - 😉🤙Goodman gaming.
Quite many assets from the Second Encounter and even Sam 2 are present in this Beta. With all of the Xbox models being present, this coulda been an actual port of the Xbox game itself, or would it be the build of Xbox before it got onto the console. Strange how you think about it.
33:29 as of now, there's eleven different takes on this leitmotif, both for official and spin-off/indie games. It may actually be thirteen depending if you count Land of the Damned and Greendale. Fourteen if you're really desperate in taking Sand Canyon's beat. But then wouldn't all of these technically be Sand Canyon's leitmotif??
Fusion added a new pinkish overlay to the screen for whenever you're in the heat damage areas, so now you're more aware of what's hurting you.
34:43 The one of many yeehaws to come. Quite an undocumented catchphrase of his as there's at least one in every of the games; although not exactly Sam 4 as it is Rodriguez who says it.. so does this mean he stole it from him, since Rodriguez is part Texan??
Suburbs - The music of this level, personally for me, is severely underrated after just hearing the powerhouse of Dunes. Wish it got more recognition.
36:10 this level's pretty much a precursor to the whole middle area in Metropolis to help train. Makes sense since it coulda been after this level if it weren't for Sewers.
36:21 applies to pretty much a good few levels in SS1 as a whole. There are even Bouncers placed outside for you to launch yourself back in should you fall off the walls.
Also shoutouts to the Yoda and especially Yodeller secrets for scary sounds. Woulda loved to hear how they sounded in this capture.
Sewers - 34:14 interesting how Roman states there's no dark areas, and yet we had things like Sand Canyon and Tomb of Ramses III which most certainly had dark areas. Maybe not so much in the case of the Alpha build when this was being talked about, but certainly interesting to think.
38:24 - if not Valley of Kings since those spawns trigger on harder difficulties, the pool of water before the final bridging area in Moon Mountains has them as well. Sewers is just the first "normal" encounter.
39:18 guess this means we theoretically have 4 different Arachnoids now. From hatchlings, juveniles, major, and now elders.
Metropolis - 43:25 I guess if you really wanna count it, there's four endings to this if you've played Bogus Detour. As that game immediately begins just after Metropolis's end.
Alley of the Sphinxes - 45:47 not only is this column gone in HD and up, but all of the heat damage areas as well. Meaning you can go out of bounds as much as you like.
46:12 Speculation has it that this "nukeball" could've been the default ammo for the cannon. Have this weapon be its own take on a BFG. Makes kinda more sense considering the cannonballs are filled with uranium and them exploding would certainly cause a lot more damage.
RIP magical surfboard. Gone too soon, taken out in one of the most badass cutscenes.😔
Karnak - Can you believe there's eleven versions of this level that exists? Crazy.
There exists a screenshot of what may be In the Flesh that shows off a blurry image of Karnak with the 2 small side shrines.
Luxor - 53:49 worst investment I made smh my head.
The skybox in this level is an unmodified version of SS2's Kingsdale (pointed out by Nevermore).
This level also has so many drastic changes compared to its Alpha counterpart. So much so that it's combined with Karnak and split differently.
Special shoutout to this level's Xbox cutscene (when going straight to Great Pyramid) where Sam and a bunch of Gnaars go absolutely Matrix on each other.
Sacred Yards - 57:03 Not-so-Silent Pill also applies to every other game if you take too long picking it up. Which makes me think there's something with Xbox that has the level load too long. Also thanks for my guide shout-out!
57:14 even better when playing the HD games for the exclusive Kids blood mode. Not.. literally kids bleeding, but with candy gibs and sparkly blood.
Special thing about this level is that practically every destructible object contains an enemy inside it. So make note of that when doing all kill runs.
57:39 Wish you kept in that teleporting Arachnoid bit.
The Great Pyramid - 1:00:06 Extremely useful trick if you wanna go for Revolution's achievement for beating this level on I Am Ugh-Zan difficulty.
Ugh-Bot pointed out that the walls Ugh-Zan III destroys when coming towards you can be destroyed by your own (or rather the bio-mechs') rockets if you continually have them fired at. Attempts at replicating it are unsuccessful, so some citation needed.
The last arena is different if you play on VR. To off the chance of motion sickness, the jump ramps and rings are more close together and the rings are now vertical. Meaning you now have to physically jump through them to activate the laser.
And speaking of the laser, it's quite funny knowing you can walk through it and be instakilled. Since it functions the same like the ending cutscene, you can actually witness your corpse being sucked up and ejected out of the ship somewhere outside the pyramid. So if the laser kills you when you come through it, does that mean Sam's been dead?! Is that why TSE and 2 are not canon?!? (I know Netricsa says about how the laser works, but it's funny to think.)

0:45 - Quick spelling lesson. Roman's last name ends with letter "ć", which pronounces like "-ch" in the word "rich", not "-k" like in the word "rick". The emphasis in the name "Davor" falls on the first syllable, like in "Dunvich". The letter "u" in Davor's last name pronounces like "-u" in "put"or "-oo" in "doom".
1:48 - It's kind of bold to call "In The Flesh" a "dungeon shooter" as even the old web-archive development page mentions "open spaces" and "outdoor environments".
8:16 - While the official old backstory mentions how Mental's minions "will go primarily to wipe the Sirians", neither the backstory nor the game actually confirm that Sirians on Earth are dead from the hands of the Horde or even alive by that point.

When I was a kid my dad got to Playtest for the original Xbox, and after he was done Microsoft gave him a choice of one free game. Out of all that he was offered, including Halo, he chose the goofy, tongue-in-cheek Serious Sam Xbox port. I remember kid me sneaking around and hiding behind furniture, being as quiet as I can so my parents wouldn't catch me peeking on him blasting rockets and gibbing enemies. Mom said I was too young to play such an "Adult Game," but if dad noticed me he'd let me sit next to him and watch as he blasted through Mental's hordes. After being caught more than once my mom finally agreed to allow me to be Dad's player two - as long as we had it on Hippy Gore, haha! This full hour brought back some good memories of my kid-sized hands barely able to hold the Duke controller, getting bounced out of bounds by werebulls, and high fives with the man on the couch next to me who made me the Sam fan I am today.

41:08 In that area there is music with a good bass line plays. I was playing on my laptop, and blew the sub-woofer in it, and had to buy a new sub unit on Ebay. Just got carried away with the music, turned it up and that was the story.
There is a bit more to the story in that I had only just built the laptop. I used a mixture of parts, all from the same model of course.

One of your best videos to date. It's easy to tell how much time and passion you have put into this, and it was definitely worth the wait. Bit of a shame about Second Encounter though, since that's my personal favourite. Ah well, to each their own.
One small bit of trivia I found out about Suburbs is that the Baths of Diocletian level from Serious Sam: Advance is almost identical to it. Two large, square outdoor areas with several smaller buildings scattered about, ending with Sam jumping into a hole in the middle of the second one.

9:36 MY GOD FRAME I ALMOST SPIT OUT MY DRINK
It's funny how they justified the infinite revolver ammo with techno-magic.
I do prefer the old tombs lighting in the classic, makes it feel more alive....even though it looks dead-er.
The Alpha graphics are so colorful and nice to look at.

Well, we don't care how long a video takes as long as it's top-notch content! Appreciate the efforts! In my opinion though, biggest problem of SS Revolution is it's optimisations. I guess there is a way to play it with above 60 FPS consistently? Made a guide on this very subject but dunno how many people it helped, lol, but I atleast got 80 FPS in good to decent maps and the campaign(except Bright Island).

An 1 hour SS video? lets goooo! I grew up with this game and i have so many great memories playing it with my friends split screen, oh man time goes by fast. I did a full playthrough of all SS games a few years ago and man that felt so good. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug

I'd love to see a video on Second Encounter as well. There's apparently a lot to unpack with it too, as it had its own alpha and was originally going to be a mod for First Encounter.

No worries about taking a while, just glad you're back with a meaty feature.
SS came out when I was in high school. It really seemed like the next new thing for a while, and I would call it notable in being the first 'throwback' sort of shooter I can remember. In that, at the time, everyone was talking about how great it was that it took shooting back to its fast-moving, horde-fighting roots. Even though it didn't, really. It had the DNA of earlier shooters but did something new. I think I enjoy it more now than I did then.

Thank you for the Serious sam feature series Frame, I've been watching them on repeat along with Sacor's full director's cut featured lenght video for the last year.
This is a very well compressed and extensive look into the first encounter, I heard the xbox version of the game was different but I never thought it would be this much of a difference. The turn to the left Secret Yard's entrance reminds me a lot to the Skill point found in Gates of hell, except that here you would be missing an entire level.
Quite surprised to see a Oni CD in this video, as of today I just finished replaying it, maybe you will make a video on that game at some point? either way that Mercury Bow is just awesome to use!
These series of videos introduced me to your channel and I've been a fan of your content ever since, Keep it up!

Great video as always FR. I'm replaying classic first encounter at the moment. I'd love to see a video on the differences between the classics and HD remakes, as there's seamingly a lot more than just updated graphics, if that's an idea you might be interested to toy with.

Yes! Finally! You were MADE to do this video man! I'm really excited!
Edit: Oh well. I'm not gonna lie here. Since I was anticipating this video so much ever since you confirmed it on the SS3 BFE feature video, it's hard not to feel a little disappointed that it turned to be different than what I was expecting. Another thing that disappointed me was that you didn't talk about Second Encounter, which is my favorite game in the franchise. I was super excited for this video to come out BECAUSE i thought you would be fully reviewing TSE.
That said though, please don't take this as some kind of offense or something like that, i swear it's not the intention, I'm just saying the things that i didn't really like about this video here, it's just my opinion. Removing those while considering the video itself, it was honestly amazing man! It's so good i watched it two times already and I WILL watch even more times in the future, just like i did with the other two Sam feature videos. Guess I could say i'm excited for the bite sized TSE video.

Cool video, as always. Funny and informative.
Small note: the "not so silent pill" in Sacred Yards is timed, not just an Xbox feature. You have to collect the pill as soon as the level starts to get the "silent pill" instead.

I may be biased due to how long I've been following your channel, and how I got used to your content, but this is your most interesting serious sam video yet. Focusing on trivia, even if I already knew some of it, was a great idea. I also like the idea of showing multiple versions of the game

50:30 that THING used to make me panic at the moment I saw it, it used to cause me a very strong irrational fear just for the way it looked, especially the red one. dunno why, I guess it was because of how gloomy it looked, or mysterious... I didn't know if he was aware of my presence and it could attack me or something. it felt like something that didn't belong. Pure nightmare fuel to my infants eyes.

First I want to say this video is amazing, I didn't expect much from it due to it covering trivia but I was pleasantly surprised.
Screw figuring out FNAF lore, figure out Serious Sam lore!
Also, 28:35 the files seem to state it is an "acid ball" attack. 34:30 it's kind of up in the air whether it's truly the same sound or not.
36: 04 It is also similar to the Next Encounter prototype build animation, which may mean it’s a sort of placeholder animation for development.
39:30 Same happened to me lol (Just like me fr).
You almost made me tear up at the end by playing the SS1 credits song.
