On the record version, Jeff Lynne and Marc Bolan play dual lead guitars. Marc had been a fan of Jeff Lynne's music since his Idle Race days in the late 1960's. This clip was recorded at Brunel University, London, UK in late 1973, Mik Kaminski is wearing the former violinist, Wilf Gibson's trademark cape, he was possibly hoping that nobody noticed the fact that Wilf had recently left ELO.
Like your great reaction to this ELO tune which is spot on. That's a very early live rendition (1973 I guess). ELO were still (very) slowly finding their path to global superstardom. In a UK record magazine poll around that time ELO were voted on 37th (!) place. 5 years later they would be one of the absolute Top-Groups worldwide. Thanks for your reaction from a die-hard lifelong german ELO fan.
Always loved that song! DoYa another cool guitar riff song of theirs. On The Third Day tour was my first concert, so quite a smile comes along with this album!
Early days for this amazingly talented and very unique supergroup. They were searching at this point. I call it their experimental phase. They tried many different things back then it seemed. This is raucous and angry. Not at all like their later material. This is a slamming tune. Real rock and roll. Later on they found their sound that a lot of us recognise. However they are good to excellent regardless of what time in their career we are talking about. They are and were pioneers. An orchestra meets and mixes up
They were such an awesome show to see back in the day. The String guys( violin, cello etc ) would go nuts in stage. So much energy then they'd slow the show down and take you in a laid calm cool as fuck musical journey. Then kick you in the Ass again.
The guitar is the Classic Les Paul . During the 60s and 70s the Rockers were discovering what those Les Pauls could do and how powerful they were . They were usually put through a Marshall stack or an Orange amplifier . If you really liked that guitar sound check out Frigid Pink’s cover of “ House of the Rising Sun” .. Anyway I typed in reaction to ELO MaMa Belle and you are the only one that came up. It is my favorite ELO song . The Guitarist Jeff Lynne is the genius behind ELO. Excellent Songwriter and Producer too.
Thankyou for reacting to another great song by E.L.O. I love the music video too. For something different, have a listen to 'Bluebird is Dead' from the same album. I reckon you'll like that one.
.....a bit of Rolling Stones riff in the beginning. Jeff Lynne is a genius! Great choice; haven't heard it for a very long time. Nice having you back. Saludos ✌️
A nice raw, live version. In 1973, ELO was still finding its way to the smoother, fully orchestrated sound you know them by. ELO has a couple distinct musical phases that each appeal to different fans. My favorite is the “classic years” of 1975 though 1979. A good example of a classic, hot guitar opener riff mixed with the big orchestral sound is the hit Do Ya from the New World Record album - the same as Livin’ Thing. You’d dig that one. It might become a favorite.
If you look about 3 comments down it says Rolling Stones Riff...That's exactly what you noticed... :) this makes me wonder why I haven't listened to more E.L.O. in my life..
Hit records are tough to come by. But to have and produce hits while incorporating the violin and cellos is PURE GENIUS-That's what Jeff Lynne is.
Only reactor to this song that I know of. Hats off to you

Jeff couldn't quite get the sound he wanted so he invited Marc into the studio. The rest is history

ELO is what happens when classically trained musicians fall into the cavern of rock.
Thanks for Ma Ma Ma Belle...they went MOR after this.
Concerto for a rainy day is a good one from ELO..
'Tightrope', and their flash mob dance video set to 'All over the World' will blow your mind!

Check out the Travelling wilburys my friend.... A super group with jeff lynn, tom petty and a couple more super stars... great channel👌👍💚
And George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison. True supergroup 🔥👍
Rolling Stones “Honky Tonk Women” has a similar guitar riff. And I must agree with the suggestion to give Do Ya a listen for a similar rocking vibe.
Lovin the Lion. E. L. O. 💚
