Ah man have I been looking for Astro van before and after DB readings - THANK YOU for sharing. My van jumps from 35 (inside quite garage) - 55 DB (idle) - so a lot of engine noise - these Astros dont come with noise or heat reduction hoodliners so that might make a big difference too (easier than strpping front and doing firewall / doghouse etc, at least for quick win). There is a difference between sound deadening (vibration of panels) and sound absorption (echo bouncing around the van cavity). Insulation should help (unless you cover it with another panel that bounces rather than absorbs the sound). Will be amazing if you could rerun your DB tests after insulation before covering it with a panel. Thanks once again - awesome videos!
Are you going to do the floor? A lot of noise transmission is through the floor of a vehicle. You only have to look at now much sound deadening material is stuck to the floor of a modern car and the carpet backing material on BMW’s and Audi’s is about an inch thick! If you want to make it quieter get the trim off in the front and do the floor, doors and bulkhead to stop engine noise coming through into the vehicle. It’s a pain in the butt to do but makes a massive difference when it’s done. 🙉
Big, big difference between sound deadening and sound proofing. Sound deadening (which is what's happening here) makes a huge difference in the low, rumbly frequencies. The insulation will abate most of the higher frequency noise. Of course in order to actually soundproof a vehicle it takes a little more oomph, MLV is the answer there but it's exxxpennnnssssiiiive. I had a 600hp hotrod recently that I did the whole works on and it was a crypt-quiet 54db inside at full throttle but it cost over a grand to get it that quiet. You'll get pretty amazing results for the van at a fraction of the expense when the goal isn't trying to turn a vehicle into an anechoic chamber. LOL.
Tire/ road noise, wind noise, engine noise. Consider where each is comming into the van. Sometimes, you just need to do the floor. The new windshield may help too. The app on your phone may be able to tell you the frequency of the loudest noises so you can better target that problem. In my van, I did the front fenders, floor and engine cover first.....huge difference although I didn't meter it.
Awesome vid! If you held the phone app in your other hand you would have noticed a significant improvement, The mic was in the noisiest place beside a door that you likely didn't add the deadener to and a window. We just purchased a VW bus and will be doing this soon
I don't know how far along you are but most driving noise above 30 mph is actual coming from under the vehicle (or vehicle floor). For a bit more of a drop in Db doing the 30% method on the floor is recommend with the type of panel you used. But I would do something like Al's Liners HNR which is a fluid applied heat and noise reducer that can be rolled on and for about 99 bucks it does a whole truck floor panel, outer door skins, and rear panel wall. I use it a ton for building out sound systems in trucks on their floor boards, rear cab wall, and on the inside of the outer door skin as those are the largest single piece of metal area on a truck next to a solid roof skin.
If you do something in the doors or by engine and floor that will make it so much quieter but looks like it worked pretty well and cool to see you build this van
The floor is a tremendous source of noise too. Adding a vinyl floor of some sort will help a lot. Acoustic noise abatement is about the sum equaling more than the parts. Think about how much noise an open window lets in... Skip 1 step and the rest is seemingly ineffective.
Those are un bodies. They pick up road noise bad. One thing I did that make more difference than anything, replace all the suspension rubber bushings and the motor mounts, transmission mount, if you haven't already

What about adding some sound deadening material on the lower strips on the floor. Sound does travel through the floor too, right? By putting some on the lower parts divets, might also help.
36 s ft. 1 bulk pack from dynamat . In car audio. You are still way light on effective sound control. If you want to do it properly. All surfaces should be covered. I used over 150 Sq ft in 00 Monte Carlo to get proper sound deadening. But that's just me. Good job on the van
love the real would testing... i bet if you cover way less of the top and side panels it would be a marginal difference. i bet a lot of noise is coming from the floor boards and dog house. thats just my guess though. that insulation isn't no cheap task though hahah
Hey man. One suggestion: cut an access panel in the floor for the inevitable fuel pump replacement before you put the flooring in. Instructions on the AstroSafari user website.
Supposedly the thinsulate will also have a similar sound deaden as those mats. I haven't done a direct comparison. So no real reference. I have a Ford transit and went sparingly with the stickon and covered most everywhere else with 3 inch thinsulate. So far it is slightly less noisy. It's easy to get to a point where wind noise is the loudest (got there on my Subaru and now there on the Transit). Main hope is that it's less noisy inside when it rains.
SECRET TIP! Sound deadening that you can buy for cars is very expensive! Or you can buy rolls of roof flashing from Home Depot for a fraction of the cost! I use it all the time a whole roll of flashing is $12. If you got the same amount of sound deadening from the auto parts store it would cost you probably hundreds!
Does the sound matting have a roofing tar smell? I used some of the cheaper stuff in a speaker install years ago and the car reeked of roofing tar every time it got hot for quite a while.

Noico. SMH. Kilmat. SMH. 2 of the worst CLD tiles you can use. While it sounds better, it likely won't last, especially if in a hot climate or have decent warm summers.

Remember kids, decibels is a logarithmic scale. 60db is twice as loud as 50db, so a 5db drop is actually bigger than what what you think.

What everyone should have in his mind: every 10 DB is Double for your ear(40db is Double of 30db, 50is Double of 40...)

You're totally right MLV would do a much better job, But 75 bucks for some mediocre noise reduction is exactly what this van deserves lol

If I remember correctly, mass loaded vinyl (MLV) is much better for sound deadening. Just mentioning for future reference 👍🏻

You've got to use kill mat on the floor full solid floor sheet will help out a lot
