Today we're doing a little project I've been wanting to get to for a while! We're installing a bull bar on my Chevy Astro, Scruffy, with custom fabricated mounts. No one seems to make a bull bar kit for these vans even though they look great on them! And why a bull bar? So we have a place to mount our brand new Auxbeam 9 inch round fog lamps! If there was any question as to being able to see at night before, there definitely isn't now!

For some reason I thought Scruffy was dead. Glad to see more content on it.
Just the winter slump lol. Moving onto the interior shortly!
That setup looks great! Nice creativity on the mounting for the bill bar and the lights. Might want to aim the LEDs down a bit to reduce the guilt if someone sneaks up on you while you’re using the lights lol
Damn, your patience at fitting the bumper and bar really paid off, that looks awesome 👌
I enjoy your videos. It's very refreshing to see a young fella that still knows how work on things and isn't afraid to get his hands (and everything else) dirty. Your ability to improvise, make do with what you have and think creatively are skills and qualities to be admired.
Very nice. I literally said “wow” out loud when you demonstrated the lights on haha.
They're a bit bright lol
This van keeps getting better and better 👍👍 looking forward to seeing some interior mods.
Yaeeeh, finally another build video!
"look factory......kind of.......good enough..." - ah, the sweet sound of seat of the pants engineering rationalization. I know it well. Haha. Project looks great man - really liking how Scruff is coming along!
Scruffy is getting that stormtrooper look!
It's all coming together
Nice work especially with minimal tools and workshop!
Van looks pretty dang tough. Well done.
this looks sick....awesome addition
Can’t wait for the next episode man love your build😊
jo just stumbled across watched all the car mod vids and i have to say i need more dude youre great creater cheers from berlin
Wow those Auxbeam lights are super bright!!!
Might want to aim them a but further inwards
Those lights are very nice and bright! The bull bar looks great as well. Looks awesome.
another amazing addition to the build! i always come out of these videos surprised by how much i liked them! keep up the great work :)
Nice! Apparently RUclips REALLY thinks that I need an Astro or Safari. These types of videos are popping up like crazy, and of course I watch them. LOL!
Sick! Man, I wish I had a shop and some skills to work on my Astro. Lots of potential with these kinds of vans. One day!
My she beast is going through a massive transformation, she was dark metallic blue but I like flat black so grabbed a roller and rustolium and went to town haha it worked. Been doing everything myself from motor to transmission, body is so banged up. Some weeks are total nightmares. You never know what will break next.
Skruffy is coming along nicely...good mod....especially works well living in the great Wilderness of Idaho! 👍🏼
Good engineering on that bracket. The van is looking great.
Wow, that looks awesome. More scruffy content! 👍
i just binged the scruffy series and i need more! looking forward to the next episode
I just found your van build on RUclips. It is pretty awesome. I was hoping that you’ll be doing more videos soon. I would really like to see the completed result. Everything’s looking pretty awesome so far. Hope you’re still filming. looking forward to more content.
Love this kinda stuff! In the flathead area myself. Looking to snag a Astro as well!
Glad to see scruffy is still getting upgrades
Damn that's bright!!!! Should face fog lights lower to ground. May cause BambI to run into the van! LOL
Fabtastic! Good to see ya back with a vid!
"Scruffy's gonna get himself one of them $300 haircuts. This one's lost its pizzazz" I love the Scruffy decals on the sides of the van.
Looks cool and your fabrication skills are excellent, well done.
New Sub, love from Long Island.
Add roof rack and custom bike rack in rear on scruffy. It could be even better.
Surprisingly good looking van! Love it!
We need more Scruffy!
Looks great ! I didn't realize you were from Idaho as well. We are up near CDA.
I love this series
Very cool mod, keep up the good work !
That bull bar looks great, It really sets everything off just right. Looking good man!!
I have to give props for the method of attachment. I was concerned you were going to mount the bull bar TOO well, and in the event of a low speed front end collision, the bull bar could do extra damage to the frame if mounted too sternly. But your brackets are easy to reproduce, and they will twist allowing the bull bar to push into the bumper, and honestly, saving you some heartache (In my opinion) of less structural damage to the van. Awesome work, and awesome video.
Looks so good can’t wait to see some bike trips
Loving the series and how far it's come Jim, although I think you would have been able to successfully bend your brackets if you hadn't tried to heat them up in the cast iron vice. The large cold metal mass of the vice quickly draws out heat from any clamped metal you are trying to bend. Your blowtorch seems well capable enough!
That's a great point, I'll give that a try next time, didn't even think of it acting like a heat sink!
A few weeks ago I bought a nice looking heap of F150, I need to practice welding. Nice job.
Love it mr shredist!!
I started my build about when you did actually on my$500 safari I bought for winter driving…..
I’m a 25yr auto tech and STILL have learned from your vids.
Oh- mine is white too…..glad I’m not alone with the weather challenges and learning curves lol..
I just did a bumper on mine too- really makes the off road look
Nice work buddy
-DB from MI
I'm excited for the inside!
I’m excited for the Datsun with a roll bar.
Nice addition. You can cover the cuts of the bumper holes with pinch weld.
WE NEED MORE SCRUFFY VIDEOS!!!
Bull bar looks sick! Your custom brackets for it are really stout too. Nice work!!
Love it! Thing looks amazing! Keep posting updates as time allows!
Love the ideas you come up with ( Talented problem solver). In my 65th year in UK but YOU have inspired me to search out another Chevy Astro AWD and do a small conversion. I did own a conversion van a Starcraft but had to sell it🤧. Keep up the tips and ideas as you go along and thank you regards Steve
Looks great! Super nice work.
Hey, Jim. What watch are you wearing at around 8:20? looks cool
Its a Polar Vantage M. Its been a good little watch!
@@TheShredist nice. I've been looking into Garmin and other options, I'll add it to the list 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Nice job on the install, look super clean
I love it, wish I could do the same on my 2004 Astro.
Add gussets to keep it from wiggling. I own a Jeep I’m planning to diy a bumper so I been gathering ideas along knowledge about gussets and strength. And welding
That's awesome lol! I had some 6" led fog lights I made fit into the factory fog light area of my 02 WRX. I got pulled over in the daytime for having them on.
Lol I can totally see that. These are definitely not in town lights 😂
The last thing I need is another vehicle and you got me searching marketplace for a damn astrovan😂
I know those feelings too well lol
It's great idea if you have ALL the tools needed - Nice job..
Nice . I was just looking into putting an old chrome brush guard on my 03 Safari. But I don't think it's going to work and it is Chrome so it's kind of '80s. My shaggy wagon is white also love the video thank you
Nice ride now put a light bar above the gmc logo you can never have too much light
dope AF, I need to get some for my van "Miles"
if you get some Mapp gas from the local hardware store it get 4 times hotter that reg propane, makes it some much easier for heating up metal without a oxy acet system.
Love these builds!!
👋😳Really Nice set up 2bad the lights cud not mount in side the open space of that brush guard. Dont bump into Anything!👍😅
Man I wish someone (lol you!) would sell these to the public cause I want this badly!
Nice touch
Your fab work is moving along nicely. Scruffy has a nice aggressive gren now. Nice and off roadie.
Thanks! Still interested in a better welder in the future, especially if I keep up restoration projects like these, but we're making due!
picked up a chevy astro from a dude just last year. Your videos are some of the best out there for astro build out info. Please keep em' coming!
We're struggling with what to do about a roof rack. There is a video of someone who went BANANAS and built out the coolest roof rack Ive ever seen:
ruclips.net/video/XxISrCZnGyo/видео.html
A roof rack Is not that bad to do. If you got a van with the runners on the roof use that to start where ..if not you can buy bigger van roof runners to start. At least it gives you a idea on how to …my friend took Astro van runners to put on his Jeep. To add rook rack. Today it still on his Jeep.
@@Wannaridebikes thanks for the tip! ours came without runners
@@qtip919 yeah go to a salvage yard and pick them. At least with runners you can get the braces for the runners as well. And that gives ya ideas on building one.
Looks great !!
this is amazing! thank you!
Awesome, i was just thinking about scruffy last night and wondering how it was doing
Great set up nice 😎😎😎😎
Looking good!
YES
Hell yea! They do look a little big but they are funtional
great work man
Nice job.
Super burrera, I want one just like it, I just don't have all the tools and in a workshop it would be very expensive.
GREAT ONE!
Looks great
Looks good but not sure I'd call it a bull bar more a nudge bar compared to what we call a bull bar here in Australia
Next time you need to heat a piece of metal, don't heat while the area you need to bend is mounted in the vice jaw(heat sink). The heat is not concentrated in the metal you are working but absorbed by the vice. Heat the metal where it is not touching a heat sink then move it into the vice for bending.
Hi. Was wondering if you could share which LED lights you chose for your headlights and whether you're still happy with them. Thanks!
Did you consider mounting the lights behind the bar? For the bar to, you know, actually protect something valuable?
Love it mate 😎👍 looks sick 🤘🤘🤘
Yay more Scruffy!
Looks awesome 😎
Nice job. What bull bar did you purchase?
This is why I don't accept gifts. Next thing you know you're in fab mode and apprenticing in smithing 😂
Also, what’s weird is I never see any updates on the Astro pages on Facebook
looking good
Excellent!
They go behind the bull bar
Yessss
What is the best diesel engine for the truck?
how did you route the wires in to the cab through the firewall?
You got the measurements on the brackets?
Look good
I'd like to have one myself
Sweet
