  • Today we're tackling one of the hardest things to do on a Chevy Astro; replace the rear doors! In order to get these things off we need to fabricate a special tool, but it only half works...

    .22 caliber ramshot pops the pins out. Seen a guy on RUclips do it. It works. I did my express van doors and am now doing my rear safari doors. Leaves paint untouched. ✌️🇺🇸

    This is exactly what working on cars/vans/trucks is about. Not what they show on TV. You can spend days removing a stuck bolt or pin, then a full day of putting stuff together/what they show on TV. Thanks for making this interesting. 🙂

    we got a 2 wheel drive astro van back in 2009 for $700 with 160k miles. it now has over 300k and still running! the van work great for transporting our bikes as we can stuff 4 in the back with the rear seat out. also noticed the past few years, the rear axle has a high pitch hum to it when coasting, but ill wait till it gets worse before replacing it with the parts van we got. also the engine is now smoking when first started up but clears up when driving, but i have a low mile engine waiting to go in when i get the motivation lol. so for $700 it was well worth any work it needs bc these are the best mini vans you can get.

    Great to have some new content from you! I didn’t think it would work because you didn’t use hardened bolts and nuts (Grade 8). But I didn’t think the bar stock would break! Kudos on making this work!

    Good job! I've discovered that (especially in cold weather) heating the joint really helps to loosen things up.

    congrat mate! love watching your videos! what brought you back on track? I am basically the same non-order-type as you (sorry for calling you out ;)) I am now recognizing my tendencies in life to do 100 projects at the same time and nothing gets done properly. well I'm obviously exaggerating! what's your secret sauce? how did you overcome it? and again: keep making great content, highlight of my evenings!

    One trick I have learned over the years is to use the welder on the pin. What I mean by this is, to heat the pen a few times with some nice solid tack welds. Allowing the weld to cool completely in between tack welds. What this tends to do is makes the PIN go through some heat cycles. Shrinking and expanding of the pin usually breaking up the rust. If given the option I'd use my TIG torch because you could really pinpoint the heat. I've done this many times with just my MIG welder though. Nice work, you got the job done. I'm amazed you to get anything to stick with that particular harbor freight welder. You'd be surprised how much easier it is to weld with a Eastwood or a Everlast generator welder. I believe even if you stepped up your welder too one of the better harbor freight ones you'd see a much better results. Which would just confirm that your welding skills aren't terrible it's really just the welder. That's my experience anyway. I have the Eastwood but then somebody stole it and I've upgraded to Everlast generator three in one.

      A better welder is definitely on my list for the future. I did an ac to dc conversion on this cheap one as well as adding a capacitor to it, but it still makes more of a mess than anything lol. The welds to the pin trick is solid advice though! May need to try that in the future if this job ever comes back up again!

    Glad to see it work out in the end. As a welder fitter by trade. I am offanded and disqusted by your welding. 🤣 Joking. In all seriousness love the ingenuity and the welding will get better. The new to you doors are a major improvement to scruffy.

      I'd like to get a better welder with gas. I have this cheap harbor freight one, did an ac to dc conversion to it and added a capacitor, so its a bit smoother, but man it splatters like crazy no matter what and is either too cold or too hot with the single toggle...have any recommendations on a solid little 110 welder thats worth investing in for smaller automotive projects?

      @@TheShredist it all depends on what you want to spend. If you want to go to welding with a shielding gas your looking 1500 to 2000 US for something decent in the MIG discipline.
      For small around the house projects your better off with a stick welder running 220 to 240v off a 240v house circuit. 110 120v is too weak to get good clean hot welds. There are decent 110 120 volt out there but most welders use 220 to 350volt machines in a non industrial shop like I work at.
      As for welder brands everlast is a good brand for the price. You can get a very cabable stick/tig set up for 500 to 900 Canadian. Lot of the guys at my work that have a small shop at home sware by there performance to price ratio. I haven't tried one myself.
      Also when running a non gas set up DC current is better then AC as it gives you more consistent heat output. AC works best when using a sheilding gas.
      Just stay away from the sub 300 US priced stick welders and sub 800 US MIG welders. You get what you paid for, the more robust the welder power unit the better consistent welds. The cheaper you go your getting nothing more that a glorified tacking machine to small crappy 1 to 2 inch long stiches.
      In the end its your welder setting that make all the difference once you get a decent machine. You can find welding peramiters online easy based on type of material and thickness being welded.
      Its like any tool on your work bench, a quality tool leads to faster and better results.

    I looked at some doors at the salvage today. Good to know I wasn't just being a sissy with my punch and hammer trying to get one off. Might have to rethink that plan. Unfortunately they only have one door that is in decent shape. 1/2 there.

    Have you made any adjustments to your pinon angles? I am having a similar issue with humms and vibration after my lift and 4x4 swap. I also had my driveshaft extended as the np233 is smaller in size.

      I haven't made any adjustments no. Maybe its just a character of a steeper driveline angle? Though that doesn't seem quite right...

    I have question: how did you remove and reassemble the springs in which the cables go into van? I want to remove them put some cables through there and reassble them. Any idea how I could do that?

    To keep the rear end simple go to the u pull it yard look for the lowest mileage rear end that is close to or your exact year, take it and swap it out, at least that’s what I’d do, rear gears scare me...

    I think they have a tool to remove the pins. Just like doors on trucks. If ever use a steel rod to hammer from the bottom. Straight is key.

    I can see the pins being hard to remove, why make it easy for thieves. The hinges being welded to the body is just being cheap and stupid! What a suck job. Nice jig though.

    Idiots at GM that thought welding thier doors to the vehicle is a good idea (all thier vans are the same) should be made to watch this...for those of us that do not have a welder it's an issue.
