Thanks for your breakdown of Van Niekerk's form. It seems like his running style isn't the traditional style like La Shawn Merritt (lane 8) or even Isaac Makwala (lane 4). Both of those great runners pretty much keep everything in a straight line. by the way, that race was the 2015 track and field world championships in Beijing.

Wow. I’m an old guy but I recently got obsessed with track as i try to run 400m in 55 seconds. I study all the RUclips videos I can and I have developed some theory also with my knowledge of music. I realize I live right down the street from you. I will have to stop by.

That's impressive running time for an old guy. I'm into my 50's and worked out how to continue sprinting with osteoarthritis in my hip. Sprinting is fascinating but the staying power is what intrigues me. You can see immediately when Wade is running in the final straight that his stride is longer. I am experimenting with keeping the body strong and using more of it to propel your running, so this video analysis is interesting. How do you use your knowledge of music in running? Do you maintain some kind of rhythm to sustain speed? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks this was a really helpful analysis. I was thought to myself how it looks Wayde is speeding up but slowing down at the same time. I had no idea he was over-using his arms and torso to lengthen his stride. 👍

David Rudisha does this arm/shoulder hip/knee rotation to drive his running gait...

It’s almost like after coming off the turn from the 300 meters it makes him look propel faster but, it’s a masquerade cus of his arm movements

Interesting breakdown. I've been specifically looking for slow motion of Niekerk to compare his running style to Bolt's. The first time I watched Niekerk run I thought I noticed a similarity in their arm-swings; they both seem to throw the shoulder forward toward the front end of the arm-swing. Analyzing more closely, it looks like they both transversely rotate the pelvis to a greater degree than do most of the other runners. To my eye, both have form that looks a tad more similar to that of Kenyan distance runners

If you look at the 400m final from the 2016 olympics when Van Niekerk set the world record, it looks like Wade didn't use that left arm in such a non-traditonal manner. There may have also been less opening up of the shoulders to use the obliques and pecs to help drive him in this race. I don't have the ability to slow it down so easily so I can't really be sure. What do you think?

he runs exactly like his mother in her days. one on one.

He's really amazing. I mean, his 300m PB is 30.81s while he spent 31s for first 300m in this race and was still able to finish his last 100m at 12s

Truly fascinating! What makes this even more fascinating to me is the fact that he had absolutely no "elite coaching". If he had, they would've forced him to change this horrible arm technique and he probably never breaks 44 seconds.

    • @Performancelabofcalifornia

you never know. Some elite coaches do not mess with form much but just build strength and power in the body..

Efficiency is relative to the athletes we may never hit the ideal model. Take a look at his mother’s form.

How about Trayvon bromell start any biomechanics about his feet close to the ground because lots of coach’s have been saying it’s bad despite its appearance looking absolutely wicked almost like he’s hovering over the track

If this man was pushed to the tape from the other competitors,he would of easily ran sub 43. Based on the math breakdown,he should have at least ran 42.9

you can not analyze 400 meter runners based on their last 100 meters when they are in oxygen debt and their form deteriorates. Running is not as much about technique than it is about biochemistry.
