    I love how Katara's scene with Hakoda is contrasted with Zuko's scene with Ozai. On one side, we see a father who can see his daughter is in pain and does his best to comfort her and assure her he loves her and her brother no matter what, and the daughter feels safe enough to be emotionally open with him. On the other side, we see a father coldly welcoming his son back home, not giving him the apology he owes him and says he's only proud *because* he did things that only advantage him, and the son is clearly too scared to talk back beyond "Hello" and "Thank you."

    Katara's scene with her dad gets me every time. Because she's usually the most mature member of the group, it's easy to forget she's 14. She herself admits she doesn't understand why she's still angry at him even when she knows why he left. But she nevertheless has those feelings of anger. This show does such a good job at humanizing its characters.

      Honestly, now that I think of it, Katara stepped into the parental role pretty quickly after her mom died. She took on all this responsibility so quickly and I don't think she was ever able to grieve her mom properly because of it. Which is why all of this affects Katara so much more than it affects Sokka. Not to mention she probably felt very guilty about her moms death since she was the last to see her alive. Thats a lot for a kid to deal with especially without her father present so I understand her anger (despite her still being understanding)

    I love Ozai's face reveal. For two seasons, he was faceless, mysterious and unseen. You assume he looks like a hideous, terrifying fiend. Not to mention that Zuko has his honor, just not in the way he intended to resurrect it. As a 11yr old girl, i cried watching Katara speak with her father. My dad is military and i carried so much resentment and anger as a child without understanding why and seeinf Katara figure it out with her dad was a huge, monumental moment for my own personal growth. I realized the anger i thought i had for my dad wasnt actually for him. I realized i was actually sad and missed him so badly that my body didnt know what to do with it other than turn it to anger and push people away. As a kid i was convinced i didnt need friends bc we wouldnt simply move again and id never see them so i secluded myself. Kataras character arc was a massive aid to me as a lonely child. Like a guide for my own emotions
    Edit: and as an adult fan of the show, I'm so relieved and greatful to finally find youtubers who recognize her strength instead of villanizing her for being a little girl with big emotions and too much responsibility. Too many people straight up villainize Katara bc she had a crush on Jet or butts heads with Toph or "bosses people around" instead of understanding her position in her Tribe and in Team Avatar

    I think difference in Sokka's and Katara's attitude towards their dad comes from that : Sokka wanted fathers acknowledgment, he was his role model, amazing warrior and inventor. He wanted to be a help of him and simply missed him -they had similar humor and all that. BUT Katara was actually a PARENT in her family. It was harsher on her,because when father left, she stopped being a child and she truly needed someone to take care of her. Sure, they had grandma,but we all know Katara filled in for the role of a mother. And grandma probably needs to be taken for too,since she is elderly woman.

    This episode also demonstrates another way Aang and Zuko are mirrored - their hair. Zuko’s (mostly) shaved head is a symbol of shame over his banishment, whereas Aang’s shaved head is a symbol of pride for his culture. When Zuko begins to regrow his hair, it symbolizes the beginning of his redemption journey, whereas Aang’s regrown hair symbolizes his shame over his inability to protect the Earth Kingdom and the fact that the Avatar cycle almost ended.

  • @biglc034

    Azula giving Zuko credit for Aang’s apparent death is not purely about setting him up, in my opinion. This moment hints at a complex dynamic between the siblings. Despite Azula's manipulative and controlling nature, it's evident that she has some twisted form of affection for Zuko.
    Azula's way of caring is rooted in possession and control. She views friends and family as extensions of her power, and Zuko is no exception. In her mind, keeping him close enhances her status and provides her with a controllable ally. This relationship is undeniably toxic and unhealthy, mirroring the broader dysfunction within their family. He is the problem child and she the prodigy, with out him her role is not as secure.
    While Azula's affection for Zuko is deeply flawed, it is present in a distorted form. She values the role he plays in her life, much like she does with Mai and Ty Lee. There is a comfortable familiarity in their interactions, suggesting that Zuko’s presence holds some personal significance for her. If his world were to collapse, Azula might even protect Zuko, if only to maintain her grip on him. In her own way, she cares for her brother, but it’s a care that’s marred by her need for control and dominance traits instilled in her by her father.

    • @hallieraymond
      @hallieraymond 4 месяца назад +3

    Mae Whitman simply bangs that speech by Katara right out of the park, apparently in a single take!
    War brutalizes people in many ways, but maybe most because it forces them contort themselves emotionally, to bury anguish that wells up later in life unaddressed. Katara has had to try to bury her feelings of abandonment to meet the needs of her tribe, her brother, and then the Gaang. When faced with them in the form of her father, they surprise her. She can't even acknowledge them at first. It's an unusual moment because there is usually a straight line connecting Katara's values, emotions and actions. And it's resolved so beautifully here.

    There's a lot going on in this 23 minutes.
    Aang died. That kind of damage is an instant kill.
    In medicine there are two levels of death:
    Clinical death: Heart stops or lungs stop. The brain may still have 4-6 minutes of nutrients and oxygen left in the tank. Start CPR and call 911. Or, use special spirit water if you are a master water bender. If no help it proceeds to biological death.
    Biological death: Brain death. No coming back from that.
    Aang was clinically dead. But, his brain had a few precious moments. Katara was able to heal his broken body enough to get him going again. Hence, Aang saying he was gone and she brought him back.
    Also, I think Aang was trying to kill himself via a confrontation with Ozai when he ran off. He knew he had no chance of beating anyone. Like some suicidal people he thought he was a complete failure and his death would be better for everyone. If he dies he'll be reborn in the water tribe. They are able to still fight off the Fire Nation. So, in a couple of decades maybe that Avatar can fix things. This is a pretty dark episode in so many ways.

    The strongest season opening episode ever. It sets the tone, pace, and overall emotion of season 3. You ACTUALLY feel the panic, the anxiety, and desperation knowing what's to come. Yet you get just enough of the love and bond the gaang still has. It gets better, or worse. Depending on how you view it.

    I think people forget that when they lost their mom, and then their dad left, Katara had to take on the role of Mother to her older Brother, while Sokka got to pretend soldier with very little actual responsibilities for the tribe.

    • @IamnotJohnFord
      @IamnotJohnFord 4 месяца назад +10

      I agree and disagree. Sokka did his part as well as Katara. And, it shouldn't be downplayed. He helped keep them safe, clothed, sheltered, and fed. Who do you think was doing the hunting and fishing? Who acquired the skins and fur they all wore?
      Sokka and Katara kept the tribe together.

    "So she was just saving her own ass" Most likely not. Azula has no way to know Aang is still alive, she knows a bolt through the heart means death. Zuko only has doubts now because he knows of the water. Azula always think about herself first and protect herself first, but she did genuinely try to help Zuko here. She just followed Zuko's line of thinking to its logical conclusion, and most likely she did notice how rattled he was so now she's suspicious but I doubt she did it for that purpose or that she was suspicious before this interaction, or at least not for that purpose *only*. She wouldn't avoid taking credit because of the vague possibility that he somehow had miracle healing water.

    imo i think azula gave zuko credit for killing aang because she knew that he survived somehow, she knew that zuko was lying to cover his ass. azula is obsessed with being perfect and if she failed in killing aang, she'd probably think her father would turn on her and start to treat her like he treated zuko. so she told ozai that zuko killed aang so she wouldn't have to deal with the backlash of failing.

    One thing I just realised that could have happened. Katara could have healed Zuko's face and then Zuko still betrays the group and she doesn't have the water to heal aang.

      That thought has been living in my head rent-free for years. She came so close to wasting that water trying to make Zuko feel better when he wasn't even committed to doing the right thing yet, and then they would have lost Aang, the Avatar, and the war for nothing. Imagine how Katara would have felt. I'm sure there's an epic AU fanfic out there somewhere telling the story of what happens next.
