Not a spoiler at all, but that look mai gave to azula that you interpereted as her being in on a plot against zuko or working against him, was actually her glaring at azula because she was upset azula interrupted her and zukos time together
Imagine this from the Fire Nation kids' perspective. This new kid shows up, defies the teacher, stands up to the school bully, throws a party at his place and then escapes the authorities. He must've been a legend 😂
It makes it even better that the name Aang uses as his disguise is his old Fire Nation friend from before the hundred year war. Those kids will never stop talking about the legendary Kuzon, and I think Aang's friend would be proud.
@@ryanakers1372 good point, he didn't allow his friend's name to die in history/time because of his actions under the name Kuzon. It would be funny though if Aang came back to the school after the war and was like "Yeah that was me guys...gotcha"
Aang really went from "If it was a choice between kissing you and dying...." to "Don't worry about them, it's just you and me right now" You've witnessed the best growth of the entire show. Bro has that airbender rizz.
Notice how in the scenes with Iroh and Zuko it is zuko who is shown behind bars even though Iroh is the one in prison. Love this show so much, and this is one of my favorite episodes.
To be perfectly clear - the showrunners have explicitly stated that Iroh not speaking has nothing tto do with the voice actor's death. It is simply a coincidence, but Iroh was always meant to not speak here.
@@Paerata12 The "Elements" podcast. The episode where they talk with the creators. I think it's available on the "Avatar: the Last Airbender" youtube channel.
@benlezmh1835 because he goes from being an extremely important and essential character to less than absolutely nothing of a character in a blink of an eye. And if that was cause the VA died then fair enough but if they wrote it that way that's ass and a half.
I think Iroh not speaking when Zuko asks for help is less of a weak moment for Iroh and more that he's realized that what Zuko needs most is to help himself. Zuko needs to come to terms with the decision he made, own it, and figure out how to move forward on his own if he's ever going to grow as a person. And I don't think he's crying because Zuko betrayed him--he's crying because he desperately does want to help him but knows that he can't.
Exactly! He's pushed and pulled Zuko towards truth and justice as much as he can. Sometimes parents have to let their kids make their own mistakes and hope all the lessons over all the years guides them in the right direction. But, it doesn't mean their isn't suffering on both sides.
Agree. I believe one of comments that Ange made that "Iroh has taught him [Zuko] everything he can" is correct. Zuko has chosen to obsess over the Avatar again and they've already been through that together and Zuko didn't listen then so why would he listen now when the advice will be the same. Another thing is that Zuko doesn't want a real conversation, he wants Iroh to affirm to him that he (Zuko) made the right decision. If Iroh won't reassure him on his decision, he wants to take out his self-hatred and anger out on Iroh that's why he tries to provoke Iroh to yell at him or argue with him so he can yell back, shift the blame to him, and justify his decision to betray him. This type of attention-seeking interaction that Zuko engages in is an interaction that Iroh is choosing not to engage in and not reinforce.
I so love how this show goes out of its way to establish that the Fire Nation itself isn't bad. Its citizens aren't evil, they've just been fed lies for a century. And the kids we saw in the school so far were actually pretty cool. It's really Sozin and others like Ozai who brainwashes them to propaganda and gives the Fire Nation a bad name.
Fun fact: Aangs headband symbol is actually upside down & makes it look like his arrow on his head. Because if u look at the other characters in the episode showing the symbol it’s facing upward instead of downward like Aangs
I think Iroh's not speaking because hes just that disappointed in Zuko. He cant even muster the will to speak to Zuko right now after he betrayed him like that.
What I love the most about this episode is the way you can clearly see that history is being rewritten, from the victor’s POV, that talk about the airbender army and stuff you can see how they are changing history in their favor. And the kids would have blindly followed without knowing any better. There is a quote from a fantasy book that I love that says “ it only takes one desperate generation to change history - even erase it” and it couldn’t be any more true
The way Aang tries to dispute it and is immediately rebuked because he "can't possibly know more than the official book". There's a school of thought in History called "New History" ("Nouvelle Histoire"), that rejects the idea that official documents are the only valid source of historical knowledge, precisely because it's so easy for a small group of people to rewrite what happened. In this school of thought, the documents should be taken into consideration, but so should the accounts of people who were there, because the way people perceive the events is important to understand what actually happened.
Aangs chosen name for his student life was Kuzon. Awhile back when aang had saved zuko he mentions his friend from the fire nation, who was Kuzon. great callback but also kind of sad as his has prob passed away unlike the earth king.
What’s funny is Aang only knows fire nation lingo from 100 years ago, so him walking around calling people “Hotman” and saying “Stay flammin” is probably equivalent to a calling women “dames” or using words like “rapscallion” and “scallywag”… or using “fisticuffs” to describe a fist fight.
I really appreciate how they don't feel the need to state this explicitly. They just show everyone's reactions to the hilariously out of date slang and trust the audience to pick up what's going on.
Hey Rube, what's all this dumb-palooka jibber-jabber about them gnarly phrases being "old-fashioned"? I'm frosted to hear your sauce-box implying hip words like "rapscallion" and "scallyway" ain't the cat's pajamas. I'll go 23-skiddoo now.
What's funnier is the New Roku novel confirms most of this lingo was made up by Gyatso actually, so almost NONE of this was ever actually real Fire Nation slang 🤣🤣
Aang must have been legendary at this school afterwards. The kid who showed up for like a week, argued with the teachers, fought the class bully, threw an epic party in a cave, then just bounced.
I interpret Iroh's lack of speaking and tears during that scene as an amalgamation of his disappointment and sadness towards Zuko. Zuko has lost his way again and him visiting his uncle almost every night to express his "lost" self is painful for Iroh to see. But he knows he has to trust Zuko to find his own path. We've seen Iroh do this countless of times for Zuko throughout the series. He's let him freely self discover while still being at arm's length when situations that require him to step in arises. Iroh's such a great example of how to guide a child to self discovery and independence, even if they get lost countless of times. You just gotta love him ❤
I think Iroh knows that nothing he could say would actually help Zuko at this moment. Iroh wnts to help Zuko because he loves him and part of Iroh probably probably feels guilty about not talking to Zuko. That being said Iroh knows that Zuko needs to work through his issues on his own this time.
And here we see another example of why I like em- Aang is showing Katara and these kids how to have fun, and for Katara and her life experience, this kind of freedom from responsibility is really important. Maybe I'm projecting a bit since I relate to her, but I think it's worth noting.
i just don’t like kataraxzuko because they literally have never showed any romantic interest in each other lol only bonding over their trauma from the fire nation for about 10 mins before aang and iroh showed up. kataang works because it’s good to show kids there’s nothing wrong with starting a relationship off with a strong healthy friendship first.
Azula was genuinely concerned for Zuko when she talked to him about visiting Iroh. She’s manipulative, and an absolute villain, but she still deep down cares about Zuko. You’ll see that in their interactions in a future episode. Also, Mai is not playing Zuko. She was pissed at Azula for interrupting their date, and suspicious of her motives for wanting to talk to Zuko alone. She’s probably Zuko’s biggest supporter after Iroh.
Its not that the kids are bad at music. Its more that the school and instructors dont let them have creative freedom. The difference between them at school and them at the dance party is to show how limiting fire nation regimes are on its nation.
Mai (zukos girlfriend) is NOT playing him, you don’t have to be super kind and gentle to be lovable, zuko is into dark brooding sarcastic goth girls that hate everyone else, AND I AM TOO. I’m pretty sure the entire fandom is in loooove with Mai 😊😊😊
Aang went from "I'd rather kiss you than die" to "Don't worry about them, it's just you and me right now. 😏" Sokka was lowkey teaching him rizzbending this entire time.
Carlie at the beginning at the episode: It's ok to steal from fire nation people. Ange at the end: I like how this episode showed that not all fire nation people are bad, they just have bad rolemodels That's exactly the growth that episode was aiming for 🤣
Aang’s character arc doesn’t get enough love in Book 3 understandably, because there are so many other character beats happening atm… but some serious buildup to finale Aang is happening in these early episodes.
Flameo, hotman! 🔥 I love this episode! That dance party scene with Aang rizzing up Katara is just so cute and fun. More importantly though, like you guys noticed, this episode emphasized that people of the Fire Nation are not all bad. Not that it's a surprise, but it's nice to really get to see it.
Aang literally became a popular new kid in school, who talks back to the teachers, casually embarassed the bully, made lot of girls like him, did an illegal dance party and left😂
I love Zuko and Mai they are cute and Mai actually glared at Azula you can tell she didn’t like Azula interrupting them especially with the comment she said before getting up and glaring at Azula when I heard it for the first time I was like yes Azula you made Mai mad and Zuko annoyed like me why are you interrupting them leave them alone.
Back in Book 1, after Zuko rescued Aang from Zhao in 'The Blue Spirit' episode, Aang mentioned one of his best friends from the Fire Nation was named Kuzon and the two of them would get in and out of so much trouble together. . . Now Aang takes on Kuzon's name as his disguise, stands up to the teachers, beats up the school bully, and holds a secret dance party before disappearing into the night. The legend of Kuzon will live on, and I think Aang's friend would be proud!
13:41 The creators of the show based Aang's and Katara's "dance" off of the Brazilian martial art known as Capoeira. If you want to see more of it, I highly recommend checking out a movie called "Only the Strong" staring Mark Dacascos. 👍
The beard stay glued to Sokka, there is a comic when they scape (if i dont wrong) from fire nation soldiers and Sokka, with the name Wang Fire, "sacrificies" to the mission. Since that day, Wang Fire is a legend in the army
I always took Iroh not speaking here to not be out of malice or even because he was betrayed by Zuko, but because Zuko has come to him for advice and for YEARS Iroh gave it to him- gently and subtly guiding him in a way to let Zuko be his best self and when the moment of truth came, it didn't pan out and in fact backfired in the worst way. Iroh knows that Zuko MUST come to the right path on his own and that if he coddles Zuko in this moment by giving him the advice and validation he wants, Zuko may end up worst for it. I mean, why should he expect Zuko to take his advice to heart now? Sometimes you just gotta let your mentee flounder around a bit and try to save themselves.
FYI Kuzon is the friend Aang had who was from the fire nation 100 years ago. He revealred it during the blue spirit episode when he saved Zuko after he was hit with an arrow.
That is thing always found funny about shipping in a show like this. Katara and Zuko are written to be interesting and like able characters. But Aang is literally written to have all the chemistry and romance with Katara that Zuko doesn't make any sense to be an option. At least in other shows when not blatant written couples like Toradora from beginning all the characters are given some romance and chemistry. Then could make argument for who should have a chance.
23:00 To add some context on the fan reaction: Kataang vs Zutara might've been the biggest shipping wars in the nascent early 2000s young person Internet lol
Yea, I remember just starting middle school when the show was getting super popular, and the amount of vitriol these two groups of children had towards their ships was crazy lol
I think Azula was being honest with Zuko and her warning. Not for his sake but for her own, she doesn't want him conspiring with Iroh and possibly losing her control over him. I think she would honestly prefer to keep Zuko and Mai as little dolls in her fire nation doll house, under her thumb. Just my opinion.
I’m so excited for you to see literally every episode until the end, they’re all so good!! I hope you do Korra too, don’t listen to the haters, it’s has its own special journey, and I know you’ll love it!
Zutara fan (who doesn't hate Kataang) jumping in with an opinion on why this shipping is so popular. Both characters exhibit deep emotional vulnerability, wearing their hearts on their sleeves and caring deeply about their causes and loved ones. Their passionate natures make their interactions charged with emotion, creating a compelling dynamic. Shared trauma further binds them, as both Zuko and Katara have been deeply harmed by the Fire Nation and have experienced the profound loss of their mothers. This shared history fosters a foundation of empathy and understanding. Additionally, they each have strained relationships with a sibling of the opposite gender: Katara, while less so, often clashes with Sokka, while Zuko's relationship with Azula is tumultuous at best. Interestingly, both Zuko and Katara were closer to their mothers, while their siblings were closer to their fathers, adding another layer of commonality. Raised and mentored by older family members-Katara by Gran Gran and Zuko by Uncle Iroh-they have absorbed values and perspectives that shape their actions. Their serious temperaments set them apart from their more lighthearted companions, fostering mutual respect. Their bending abilities, with Katara's waterbending and Zuko's firebending, complement each other, making their potential partnership both dynamic and balanced. The chemistry between Zuko and Katara is palpable in notable moments throughout the series, from the pirate incident involving Katara's necklace to their confrontation in the Northern Water Tribe and their interaction in the crystal catacombs. These instances highlight the potential for a deeper connection. Their "opposites attract" dynamic, with water and fire elements, and conflicting goals create sparks in their interactions, making their relationship more multifaceted and intriguing. Despite their differences, Zuko and Katara share many common struggles and personality traits. that all being said I think the biggest factor for some is simple. Katara is a healer by nature and Zuko is need of healing both physically and emotionally, embodying the classic trope found in fiction and fandom: "She can fix him."
This season be ready because there are new stuffs about the bendings! Carlie is a seer as always. Katara's journey in this season will blow your mind! Ange will gonna love it for sure!
This episode is often compared to Footloose, which makes the title an appropriate inversion ("Foot"/"Head", "Loose"/"Band"). Don't know if that was intentional since the title works fine on its own as it's what the school kids knew Aang by and visually followed his way by wearing them as a distraction for him.
These Avatar uploads have been the highlight of my days lately. Thank you guys for giving me a new way to enjoy my favorite show. Please watch Korra after ❤️ Shes bad***
I mean, Aang was always a favorite among people. He always had the rizz. The only one that comes close is Sokka. Sure, a lot of it come from the Avatar fame, but he always has girlies interested (and boys id wager). He had his fan club, and that girl in the Aunt Wu village. He excels in making friends and having people like him. And you see how Katara gets nervous when his attention shift to others. She’s been used to him always focusing on her. There’l are a few scenes she looks a bit jealous or even insecure.
I was SO waiting for that reaction, it’s my favorite episode. I gotta say I really like your channel, probably one of the best reaction channels out there. I see you are approaching the finale, hopefully you guys like it!
this is just a suggestion, but i really think you guys should watch “that time i got reincarnated as a slime” or “the disastrous life of saiki k” they’re both really good animes and i’m sure you guys would enjoy it!
When Aang was using outdated Fire Nation slang from 100 years ago I think it would have been funny if a very elderly man appreciated being called "Hotman"
Only now am I putting together it was an earth kingdom dance that got the fire nation kids dancing together and out of their shells… “And this is how they dance in the ballrooms of Ba Sing Se” I love the writing in this show so much
I always have to laugh at the Katara and Aang dancing scene. It's clearly flirtatious between them, but you have to also remember that from the perspective of the other kids, Aang is dancing like that with his MOM. I'm sure some of them were super weirded out by it lol
Katara looked way different when she was pretending to be his mom, not to mention we don’t even know if the other kids saw her dressed like that. They probably have no clue who she is.

Katara wasn't practicing dancing, she was bending the drinks.
I love how from the perspective they show in iroh & zukos scenes it seems that zukos actually the one in jail instead of iroh
Introducing the greatest character of the show: Wang Fire
Nobody, absolutely nobody:
Carlie: *gasp!* Maybe they took his tongue! 😱
Ron Burgundy: Well, that escalated quickly
Hell yea Footloose episode!!!! This might be my favorite in the whole series. It's just so endearing and fun!
Schoolboy Aang was HIM 🤣🔥
You two this episode were so fricken funny omg I was dying the whole time 😂😂😂
13:41 The creators of the show based Aang's and Katara's "dance" off of the Brazilian martial art known as Capoeira.
Those birds are not Toucans they are Puffins. ^^ Adorable ones.
This show is an absolute masterpiece
Freestyler from 13:22 is the best !!!
20:52 easy answer how Zuko said he's good at keeping secrets and he's being paid for killing the avatar lol
I Just remembered that this episode is likely Foot Loose.😂
FYI Kuzon is the friend Aang had who was from the fire nation 100 years ago. He revealred it during the blue spirit episode when he saved Zuko after he was hit with an arrow.
Lol Carlie's tongue theory is hilarious
That is thing always found funny about shipping in a show like this. Katara and Zuko are written to be interesting and like able characters. But Aang is literally written to have all the chemistry and romance with Katara that Zuko doesn't make any sense to be an option. At least in other shows when not blatant written couples like Toradora from beginning all the characters are given some romance and chemistry. Then could make argument for who should have a chance.
This was a super entertaining episode and reaction. Really a lot of fun, seeing you two enjoying yourselves so much.
Iroh is not speaking to Zuko because there's nothing more to teach him. It's up to Zuko to make his own choices now.
I can't wait for your ep 5 and 6 reactions
19:06 ange reaction to taking his tongue im crying 😂
I think Azula was being honest with Zuko and her warning. Not for his sake but for her own, she doesn't want him conspiring with Iroh and possibly losing her control over him. I think she would honestly prefer to keep Zuko and Mai as little dolls in her fire nation doll house, under her thumb. Just my opinion.
I’m so excited for you to see literally every episode until the end, they’re all so good!! I hope you do Korra too, don’t listen to the haters, it’s has its own special journey, and I know you’ll love it!
I think no one’s mentioned it. Boy at 5:40 was the same one who helped Appa back in season 2 when he was at the circus.
Sokka, missed opportunity for the "Wang Fire" joke
1:48 "They're toucans!!!" Oh, bless... no, honey. Pretty sure those are based on puffins. XD
This is Kuzon
This episode is often compared to Footloose, which makes the title an appropriate inversion ("Foot"/"Head", "Loose"/"Band").
Don't know if that was intentional since the title works fine on its own as it's what the school kids knew Aang by and visually followed his way by wearing them as a distraction for him.
These Avatar uploads have been the highlight of my days lately. Thank you guys for giving me a new way to enjoy my favorite show. Please watch Korra after ❤️ Shes bad***
i quote dante basco when i say this but "theres some good people in the fire nation"
people that say aang and katara have no chemistry obviously havent seen this episode.
That side eye was for Azula
Great reaction!
I think you mistook Mai's look at Azula. That look was more annoyance she interrupted them.
And i cool, but sokka. Sokka rizz is next level. Rizz moon gods and blind woman
I was SO waiting for that reaction, it’s my favorite episode. I gotta say I really like your channel, probably one of the best reaction channels out there. I see you are approaching the finale, hopefully you guys like it!
Thanks so much!
Its time for Zuko to learn his own lessons, without being spoodfed by iroh
Sokka was born to be Wang Fire.
this is just a suggestion, but i really think you guys should watch “that time i got reincarnated as a slime” or “the disastrous life of saiki k” they’re both really good animes and i’m sure you guys would enjoy it!
When Aang was using outdated Fire Nation slang from 100 years ago I think it would have been funny if a very elderly man appreciated being called "Hotman"
Don't worry Carlie, I'm still a hard zutara fan ✊
Been waiting for this reaction 😮😄
Only now am I putting together it was an earth kingdom dance that got the fire nation kids dancing together and out of their shells…
“And this is how they dance in the ballrooms of Ba Sing Se” I love the writing in this show so much
Back to back great episodes
been waiting for this episode
The bio on most of my social media is "flameo, hotmen" 😅
I always have to laugh at the Katara and Aang dancing scene. It's clearly flirtatious between them, but you have to also remember that from the perspective of the other kids, Aang is dancing like that with his MOM. I'm sure some of them were super weirded out by it lol
Not really, saphire fire was pregnant.
Katara looked way different when she was pretending to be his mom, not to mention we don’t even know if the other kids saw her dressed like that. They probably have no clue who she is.
