  • There aren’t many cities in the world like Quanzhou, and you’ll soon see why. As the starting point of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, it was a place where China met the world, and the world met China. As a result, Quanzhou is full of cultural influences from all around the world: Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism.... the list goes on!

What it means is that I respect whatever faith you put on yourself, but you need to respect what others choose to believe (or not to believe), in other words, no one should impose their own ideology onto others. However, the real situation currently is that it is illegal for people under 18 to enter churches in China, even if they are sent to Sunday schools or Youth Groups by their parents. Those who teach these children the gospel commit the crime of competing against 'You Know Who' for children's minds.

    Add a small piece of history. Quanzhou is also the home town of the descendants of the royal family of a kingdom in ancient Sri Lanka. In the early 15th century in the time of the Ming Dynasty, the king of Ceylon (世利巴交剌惹) sent the Crown Prince to China as an emissary with the Treasure Fleet of Zheng He. While in China, the Crown Prince felt in love with China and asked the Chinese emperor for permission to stay. (It was not an isolated incident. The Sulta of Melacca visited the Ming Emperor and stayed in China for 7 years as China was then the richest country in the world). He was granted residence in Quanzhou and married an Arabian princess. They sired descendants but kept very low key for generations. In the late 1990s the Sri Lanka government requested the Chinese government to help to find the descendants of the "lost" Crown Prince. They could find no trace of the descendants but with the help of the Chinese government, found an ancient family graveyard with the insignia of the Prince. They tried to remove the tombstones for study. When news broke out, the direct descendant of the Crown Prince, now a Chinese lady called Xu-Shi Yin E (许世吟娥), came up and called a stop to the intended destruction of her family graves. Upon verification and close investigation by the experts of Sir Lanka, she was established as the direct descendant of the Crown Prince and hailed as the Princess of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka government hosted a "Royal Return Home Visit" for her in 2002 where she was treated like royalty in Sri Lanka during the tour. The lady is now a "friendship ambassador" of Sir Lanka and China. So much was the historical bond between China and the surrounding countries in Quanzhou. Exported along with the tea leaves from Quanzhou was the word for tea in many European languages. The word for tea in the southern Fujian dialect/language ("Minnan hua") is "te" (or "de") and the pronunciation is almost identical to that of the French word "thé", the Spanish "té", or even the Italian "tè". From there we then have the English word "tea" and the German word "tee".

    Beautifully summarized at 09:10 🌸 "These engravings here are essentially prayers to the wind, wishing the travellers, the traders, the businessmen of the time, safe travels home, good wind, and smooth sailing. So lovely.
    These inscriptions for me, they show that foreigners, the traders, the people of different ethnicities and beliefs, not only were they accepted, they were loved.
    Quanzhou was a place that showcased to the world that people of different faiths could live together in harmony, respect and accept each other.
    And for me, that’s something that definitely deserves being remembered."
    And you've graciously left the best for a guest in your video at 09:40 "It doesn't matter what color your skin is. We are all human."

    I'm fourth generation Singaporean Chinese and my ancestors came from Quanzhou (many Chinese people have migrated out of Quanzhou since hundreds of years ago, many Taiwanese, Southeast Asians of Chinese descent can trace their ancestry back to this city) :) Quanzhou actually has an Arabic name "Zayton" (which means olives), it has the last remaining Manichaean (which came from Iran / Persia) temple in China - Cao An (草庵) which was disguised as a Buddhist temple following the persecution of Manichaean followers during the later part of the Song Dynasty. In fact hundreds of thousands of Arabian and Persian traders settled in Quanzhou at its peak and some of their descendants do still remain there, mainly people whose surnames are Ding (丁), Ma (马) etc.; a few years back they even found a Chinese woman in Quanzhou who is the descendant of a Sri Lankan princess. Persian princesses were also frequently brought to Quanzhou to be wedded off to the Mongol royalty during the Mongol Empire (Yuan dynasty)

    Very informative and well made video, glad I have learned more about QuanZhou now! Appreciated it! Quanzhou was even more famous than Guangzhou in the older days, but later in Ming dynasty (500 years ago) the emperor decided to shutdown the QuanZhou port and only leave guangzhou port open, due to the harassments from Japanese (state backed) pirates.

    Zheng He chose Quanzhou as his base, about 600 years ago visited Africa many times with 2000 sailors. Back then Arabic merchants found the maritime tread route first, Zheng just followed it, so never managed to find the new continent.

    • @benthekeeshond545
      @benthekeeshond545 4 года назад +2

      I dispute the Arabic merchants found the maritime route first. I read about this from history books many years ago. Zheng He's armada had 20,000 fighting soldiers alone, not counting the supporting crew. More than 700 years before Zheng He, only the Tang Chinese ships could navigate the oceans. Even the Indians mentioned this in folklores. This is logical because nobody had a compass.

    I'm Chinese Malaysian, a third generation. In South East Asia, Quanzhou is the ancestral home of most ethnic Chinese, especially in Malaysia and Singapore. Many of their ancestors came from Quanzhou during the end of Qing dynasty until the Chinese Civil War period. There is also a minority which hailed from there during the Zhenghe voyage during Ming dynasty and they had reside here ever since!

      @@BlondieinChinayou're welcome, Blondie. If you visit Malaysia and Singapore, the Quanzhou/Fujian culture is still evident here and they are also amongst the richest compared to other sub Chinese groups, I guess generations of exposure to international or maritime trade had honed their business acumen.
