I attended Denis' school on LI in the 1970s. He has attended our class reunions since. He takes kids who are at risk, and finds ways to motivate them to become achievers. And for the kids who aren't at risk, they become leaders. His work at Shoreham-Wading River was beyond the norm, and truly challenged the educational system. What a great teacher and thinker.
Dennis Littky's work is important for PERSONALIZING the school work. We have to constantly ask, "How can we serve and pursue and develop this student's interests into a passion? How can we guide the teenager into becoming an independent learner?"
Passionate, worth listening to. Look for his book "Big Picture" by Dennis Littky. Look for his websites BigPicture dot o r g MetCenter dot o r g wild. It's worth visiting his school. I made a video in 2005 about his school in Providence
Interesting model, but for example, if all students went to schools like the one described by Dennis, how many architects would you need to tutor the students who are "interested" in that area? I believe in a more student-centered education; however, I find that at times, traditional teaching has its benefits as well. Factual knowledge plays its role; teachers need to reach application levels.

a remarkable presentation. I wish i went to this kind of school
There is a school in the south of England that is inpsired in part by Littky. Look for Will Sutherland at QBEAcademy dot ne t
Excellent concepts. I only wish I had done it myself. We need a new way of "thinking" in the school system!
