  • Georgia has an incredible array of food for travelers to enjoy from southern staples like collard greens, fried chicken, and BBQ to more Georgian fine eating like Low Country Boils, Oysters, and Coca-Cola.
What to eat when you visit Atlanta, Savannah, Georgia, and anywhere in between in the Peach state.

A favorite summer sandwich of mine is what you mentioned, that's a Tomato Sandwich. Excellent on hot days. Just cut up a nice beef steak tomato, Duke's Mayo or Miracle Whip, on lightly toasted bread of your choice. So good...reminds me of being a kid!

Next time I cook collards I’ll boil some peanuts in that pot liquor. Thanks for the tip!

We loved the Fried Green Tomatoes at Mary Mac's. This brings me back. The food is so good in Georgia. My wife and I went there after diving with the whale sharks at the aquarium

I swear I just made some shrimp with Old Bay for kind of a fake low country boil.... I'm in Colorado.... but I'm from GA!!! (just south of Savannah--Brunswick in fact!)...and now I'm wanting some collard greens!...And literally just had that conversation with my mom YESTERDAY about how box mac and cheese shouldn't even be allowed to share a name with REAL mac-n-cheese--baked, tons of cheese, milk....Oh I should have gone home for Christmas this year!! Boiled Peanuts.....oh....oh....Never boiled them in pot liquor before.....definitely gonna try it. Can't believe you didn't mention sweet potato pie though

I searched high and low for ham hocks here in the midwest so I could make decent greens for Thanksgiving. Finally found them and made a big ol mess , sooo good. -jocelyn

I have my collards with hot pepper vinegar. So good! And if you don’t say “bowled peanuts” you aren’t from around here. The best are from road side stands.

What about khinkali and khachapuri? Oops, wrong Georgia. (You folks really should go to Tbilisi next time you are in Greece. It's not that far away and you'll feel at home in many ways.)
The whole sweet tea thing baffles me. I had a southerner once ask me if I had any sweet tea. (This was in Alaska.) So I made an excellent tea, added serious sweetness and cooled it down. They turned their nose up at it! "That's not sweet tea." I was eventually shown what sweet tea was. It is NOT tea. It doesn't taste like tea. It's a weird thing that comes as a powder (!) from a plastic bottle, that you scoop out like Tang!™. In fact it seems to have more to do with Tang!™than with actual tea. And they are addicted to this stuff! Incredible. And incredibly sweet. Thanks Jocelyn. Some of that stuff does look tasty. I miss biscuits and gravy here in the older Georgia.

umm nope. I am Georgia born and bred and I have never made tea from powder. And neither has anyone I know. Nope. Sweet tea is brewed from tea bags. And not everyone loves it super sweet; I've found that to be about half and half.
