If world leaders had the same amount of passion when it comes to science, as Mark has when talking about the food, we would have flying sorceress by now.
Philly boy born and raised. You did a good job with this food video. You saved the best for last, Philly beer culture! There are more craft breweries and brew houses in town. Yards is the largest in the city. Good food and great beer. If you want to eat it, you can find it here in Philly; Chinese in Chinatown, German at Brauhaus Schmidt’s, Italian everywhere. If you want a Michelin 5 star restaurant or a Brazilian steakhouse, we have it. The homage to our beloved Wawa is appreciated. Two big Philly Phanatic thumbs up for this video. Next time you’re in town, we can get a chicken cutlet Italian at Tony’s, it will knock your socks off!
I am a Philly native and you covered it really well!! I do love the street vendor pretzels and not not from a bakery. And Corrpolese tomato pie. Best ever.
The Reading Terminal Market is great. I recommend the 9th Street Italian Market. Ralph's Italian Restaurant is the oldest family run Italian restaurant in the United States. Isagro's has the best Italian pastries. When we go to the Market, we eat at Anthony's Italian Coffeehouse. They have panninis for lunch, coffee, teas, and pastries.
Love the food in Philadelphia. Your suggestions are great. One place I really like is the Famous 4th St Deli. Pastrami sandwich is spectacular! I always stay within walking distance. They have something for everyone. Cheers!
But in Philadelphia, we don’t call it Reading Market. We say Reading Terminal. And the Italian Market, if you’re a local, is just called 9th Street. I used to live in Philadelphia and the locals do shop there for food.
I'm in NE Philly and my friend from South Philly ordered a chicken parm sandwich with gravy on the side, and she got her red sauce on the sandwich and a side cup of brown gravy.
I'm local, and I have to say this is some solid info! There are also a ton of great Mexican restaurants in the Italian market Wawa is everywhere, but the food is not the best I’d only eat that stuff as a last resort; there are so many better options around the city.
@@nygreenguy Most of the places are pretty *authentic* so I guess it depends on how adventurous of an eater your kid is (also, I’m prob the worst person on the planet to know what kids like, if I’m being completely honest), but there are tons of places in that stretch, so there’s lots of options.
I'm from Philly. I agree about reading terminal market and especially soft pretzels (PHILA Pretzel Factory my favorite). Don't generally like cheesesteaks but love Cleavers! Lots of great food everywhere. Beilers donuts too. Cannot be beat! Enjoy.
South Philadelphia has the best authentic Mexican food! So if you're in Philly and in the mood for true tasting Mexican food, try Tamalex, Blue Corn, Taqueria La Prima, and many others :)
Pork roll/Taylor ham!! I know it’s Jersey based technically but I always think of pork roll when I think of Philly because my uncle used to make it for us for breakfast every day when we’d visit 🥰
We live in Maryland and love going to Philly for food! The market is amazing. We love stopping by Suraya which is the fish town and their food is amazing! Can’t wait to go back!
Love the roast pork sandwich. You can't beat it. We have some relatives that live just outside Philly. It's a foodie destination. It's not just cheesesteak. A delicious video Mark😜😜 Jim and Harriet
The top 2 for me eating wise in Philadelphia is Suraya in Fishtown (their cauliflower sandwich with sumac seasoned fries along with their Lebanese chai latte was BOMB!) and Kismet Bialy at Reading Terminal Market. Pizzeria Beddia was also excellent.
Just came across this after watching your Dublin videos. Great video of what to eat. I used to work a block from the Reading Terminal to eat. Lunchtime was great. The liquor license cost so much if you are staring a new business. They are limited and they can cost upwards of 250,000. Since I as a kid numerous years ago there was only two to three "4 star restaurants." Now there are so many. With that video I think you could tailgate at any Eagles game and be accepted by the locals. That is the best compliment I can give...lol.
Love this - all good and valid! The BYOB/Bring Your Own Bottle applies to beer and wine and liquor. It's a pain for restaurants, because they would love to sell alcohol, but it's nice for diners, whose bills aren't inflated by marked-up beer and wine prices (you can get a decent wine for $10, but by the glass it's probably $12-$15)
@@WoltersWorldEats I've had Redeye Gravy in the South. Having grown up in Philly and familiar with red gravy, I can confirm they are two different things.
Great suggestions! As a local, I will say that the best cheesesteaks are served out of the back of a truck parked in front of a warehouse across the street from a sanitation center.
People who know or learn I grew up in Philly will ask me if Pat's or Geno's is better, because they heard about them in a travel video, or mentioned on a sports podcast. I never been to either, which usually gets a surprised reaction, but it's for good reason. I'm from Tacony, so South Philly might as well been another planet, and there are at least twenty places I can remember in walking distance you could get cheesesteaks and hoagies from that were solid. It never crossed our minds to go to either, because they were just two places in a city of 5,000 cheesesteak shops.
BYOB is bring your own beverage, you can bring your own wine too 😉 you’re meant to tip extra if you do (as if you had paid for the beverage there…) bc the server is opening it for you/providing the glass or chilled mug and cleaning up after. Another fun twist, some Mexican places give free margaritas bc they are BYOB and don’t have a license to sell you alcohol, but they can gift it to you. If you do get a water ice there’s often another tasty option called a gelati, which is gelato with water ice. Lastly, you may hear people ordering ice water as a beverage in restaurants, and it means tap water with ice. Be VERY aware of your surroundings if you take Septa, especially at night. (Local here 😉)
I’m from Philly. If you are vegan go to Atiya Ola’s Spirit Foods on 48th Street, Jamaican D’s on Chelten Avenue, All the Way Live on Germantown Avenue.
Went to the wrong place tbh, most people in Philly don't like Dalessandro's at all. To get the best cheesesteak in the city you go to John's Roast Pork or Angelo's, followed by a trip to Sarcone's bakery.
When you guys do the “Don’ts of Philly” video, please add guidance around how NOT to order your cheesesteak here (I.e. say your order in 10 seconds or less). The locals behind you in line will appreciate it. Awesome as always!
There is a chain called "Philly Soft Pretzel factory" - try a pretzel with super-hot mustard. The pretzels are good but it is their super-hot mustard that's really special.
Well my wife would order the Philly Cheese Steak without onions since she is alergic to them. I will be in Philadelphia in April '23 for a conference so I will have to make a stop at Reading Station and eat some of these recommended foods.
I'm a Philly native who has had a fair amount of cheesesteaks. I have never ordered one using "wit". You can order one "with cheese and fried onion" and you can choose what type of cheese. Cheese Whiz--ugh.
Yeah I grew up in Bensalem just a couple minutes walk from Philly. I never heard anyone say "wit" and never saw anyone order wiz on a cheesesteak. Provolone, mozzarella, american. I don't even think most places have wiz
I agree that the pretzels are the best. I winced when I saw the pretzel you were munching on though. Get the REAL Philly pretzel next chance you get. I recommend Center City Pretzel Co
1. Don't show a video of an Auntie Annie's style soft pretzel and say it's a Philadelphia pretzel - it's not. The Philly soft pretzel is completely different - and much tastier; 2. BYOB in Philly means bring your own bottle - not just bring your own beer. Many people bring a bottle of wine when dining at a BYOB establishment
These tourists also go to Reading Terminal Market which is NOT where to go for real Philly food. It’s only for tourists and people who are staying in Center City. I live here and I NEVER go to the Reading Terminal Market.
10 different philly residents will give you 10 different answers as to the best cheesesteak, none will tell you pats or genos. This philly lifer says go to johns roast pork.
One correction - "gravy" isn't marinara. Many places that serve/sell "gravy" also sell marinara. Gravy is thicker, more heavily flavored, and usually cooked/flavored with pork or beef. It's not a bolognese, because you may not get even a single piece of meat, but it's still usually not vegetarian like marinara.
Those auto generated subtitles are pretty awful, aren't they. Sorry about the sound. We haven't gotten any other feedback like that on this video and it's ok on my end. 🤷♀️🤷♀️
I'm in Dauphin County in Pennsylvania and Scrapple never look like that. When you get scrapple, good scrapple you got to go to a farmers market or you got to go to a local butcher. Scrapple and most restaurants are not the real thing.
