Congrats on your first extra clear ! Ran (and her mistress) remain among my favorite extra bosses to this day. You pulled some prety nifty dodges here and there, you can be proud of yourself. Glad that someone else is falling down the rabbit-hole of these games !

Good job. I also just recently beat this extra stage too with my last spare life lost at the very last second of the fight. Also why is the contract spell card going in opposite directions to what i normally see?

Could be some differences between Yukari and Ran's variants if you're mistaking Ran's for Yukaris, but your starting position might also influence the spellcard's movement as well.

praise be to the cherry border mechanic literally intermittently giving you a free (death)bomb
Also rip me at bombing the fuck out of the last parts of the fight

      i alt-tabbed at 0:35, funny freeze
      anyways, thoughts on the level.
*Stage sections* - It's okay. Kind of annoying, but just route (memorise) them and dodge. Nothing particularly sticks out, I guess.
      *Midboss - Chen*
Nonspell 1: Fuck the second part. Accelerating projectiles + small gaps = certified run resetter 50% of the time. You'll just have to get good at it.
*Blue Oni, Red Oni* - I've yet to capture this. It's a long spellcard with a fair bit of RNG, and some pretty tough streaming pressure, so I use at least one bomb here. Some people stream this vertically, going up and down, to cut down on time, but the dodging is way harder this way.
*Soaring Bishamonten* - This attack is completely fixed, and the left corner is always a safespot, so outside of a few narrow dodges you can just memo this.
      *Endboss - Ran Yakumo*
Nonspell 1: React and dodge. I think this is aimed, so you can also stream it. Nonspells are usually uncomplicated, and good for keeping your senses sharp - until the later ones.
*Senko Thoughtful Meditation* - This attack looks difficult to dodge, but literally - just tap left or right and do consistent micromovements every time Ran sends out another projectile burst towards you. In general, you want to physically graze the most recent burst with your hitbox in order to stay safe. Fun attack.
Nonspell 2: Same deal as 1. Stream, react, and dodge.
*Banquet of the 12 General Gods* - Stay under Ran, and as an opportunity to cross into the bottom right corner appears, take it. You can dodge the attack elsewhere, but the bottom right corner has the most space. Stay under there, and watch out from the top, left, and right (especially the right). After the "cage" disappears, repeat the cycle. Pretty fun attack.
      Nonspell 3: Same as 2 and 1.
*Kitsune-Tanuki Youkai Laser* - Misdirect and react. You have to be somewhat proactive with this spellcard, and you're going to have quite a few very close dodges. I played it pretty bad in this video - you generally want to be closer and the directions of the shots Ran sends out you want more perpendicular to Ran as opposed to parallel. But yeah, you can just sit in front of her and move to the side on specific timings, and it's not too bad. Fun attack.
Nonspell 4: like, the easiest shit ever, just stream and react
*Charming Siege From All Sides* - Pass into the center, and just try to slip past the gaps in the red bubbles and the blue walls. Stay conscientous of how the blue walls move, and stay confident. You may get fucked by the RNG of the blue walls, or a bad pass-in (like in the video) - but it's very eay to see when you're going to get hit, and bomb your way out. This one's really fun to dodge.
Nonspell 5: Okay, time to wake up. React and dodge, but this time a lot more harder since sometimes you just get walled and forced into a nasty micrododge. It might not hurt to be a bit more aggressive dodging this, given how easily that can happen.
*Princess Tenko Illusion* - This one is an absolute bomb dump for me. Fundamentally, you want to misdirect -> shoot -> escape -> repeat. My suggestion is to not waste any time when escaping from a shot - unfocus, dash right through it, and keep up the movement, because if you drag your feet (especially when she gets lower health) then Ran's going to appear in a shitty spot, shoot her shots, and form a barrier that makes moving across the arena way slower, snowballing your attempt. It's an alright attack.
Nonspell 6: There's probably a better way to dodge this than in the video - something with moving aggressively and following the stream so you don't get walled - but uh, I just bombed it.
*Ultimate Buddhist* - Ah yes, the funny blender. This one's all about getting familiar with how to transition from Red to Blue and vice versa using the sound cue. Individually dodging both sections is really easy, but the transition between them can fuck you up - you'll just have to memorise the timing and the sound cue. I bombed in my attempt because I dragged my feet on Blue to Red. If you're bad with blenders, just remember that going closer to the center of the blender translates to spinning faster. Fun attack.
Nonspell 7: This one's about attention shifting. Find a nice spot in the slow knives, and keep track of the spacing and the direction - that's what you've got to work with. Then shift focus back up to the faster green knives as they approach you, and react with a small dodge. Shift focus back to the slow knives and repeat.
*Unilateral Contact* - There's a bunch of ways to dodge this, but you can just react-dodge and you'll be fine. The most dangerous part of this attack is inbetween volleys, when Ran spins out her previous volley while shooting a new one. I try an alternative method in the video - sticking close to avoid the spin out of the previous volley, then aggressively moving away for the new volley, which I think is safer - the cherry border tanks a hit for me, but the shot that hit me was perfectly dodgeable, I'm just bad. You can also like, bomb once and clear the spellcard without dodging a single volley, because of the way the attack works. Fun attack.
Nonspell 8: Intense streaming. Start on one side of the screen, then work your way across. I restream/direction change with tight unfocused dashes, which aren't particularly emphasized in this game, but it's a good skill to have and mandatory (Clownpiece) for later games.
*Chen* - React and dodge. Uh yeah, I think that's it. You can see the pressure getting to me here, but Chen has a smaller hitbox than you might think, even if she flies directly into where you'd want to dodge this attack, so you can scrape her and be fine - that's how I got my first capture of this. Honestly, don't worry about her too much, since the projectiles can catch you out if you make too much space for her. Fun attack.
*Kokkuri-San's Contract* - I hope you saved your bombs for this. This one is basic, but fucking difficult, especially with the pressure on you. You just have to be confident and familiar with your movement. Near the latter end of the fight, all hell breaks loose as you micro-dodge in the center - just trust in the hitbox, or bomb the shit out of it. Use the sound cues to inform your movement, and don't be afraid to be proactive. Fun attack.
*Descent of Izuna Gongen* - I've seen people create a safespot on Yukari's hyper-buffed version of this by getting her to drift to the left of the screen, but like, honestly, you'll just have to trust in your dodging skills (or bombs). There's definitely a spot in the bullet pattern you *want* to be in for this attack, somewhere in the gap between all three of the rice streams, the red bubbles, and the butterfly lines - then, it's "just" reacting to the big balls and blue arrows, but uh, you can clearly see I didn't do that - I had three lives and an immmense amount of pressure on me, so I just bombed the shit out of it.
Anyways, good fight. 168 retries were taken on the level itself (like half were at the start because of "whoops I got hit time to restart"), but you can also see the spellcard history to know how many attempts I have on each attack.
