Ya know before this I was honestly considering doing the fan-made Phantasm stages as well...WAS being the key word here...We'll see how I feel once I make it to Touhou 10...but after this nonsense...hell no...
First of all to note everything about the Phantasm stage is a harder remix of the Extra stage. From the stage to mid-boss to boss herself everything to a certain degree follows the same logic as before.
The stage is the most unchanged possessing almost the same enemy placements, the primary difference is every attack is now faster. Once you get over that hurdle you'll actually learn that the primary dodging will be much easier because now enemy bullets will not linger on the screen for long. A scant silver lining I know but really you need every advantage you can get.
Ran is the mid-boss this time and attacks with almost the same pattern as Chen did before. She doesn't jump around as much now nor is as quick rather she more attempts to overwhelm you in bullet density. While this does make her attacks harder to dodge it does make her a better target.
Yukari is...something else...While the stage was very similar to the Extra stage her attacks are now at best similar to Ran's at worst completely different. The main thing to keep in mind is that despite the fact that they may look like Ran's, Yukari's attacks are NOT illusion-like at all. Everything you see is just as bad as it looks. Almost all of Yukari's attacks focus on the balance of two different attacks fired at the same time fired in different directions. You basically have to learn how to focus on one attack while trusting that you can dodge the second attack without watching it.

On Yukari ‘s Arcanum “Danmaku Bounded Field” Whenever you use bomb Yukari also freeze the spell timer until your invincibility frame ran out
Yukari will freeze the spell timer (and the spell) while you have I-Frames, no matter the source of it.

The Grimoire of Marisa describes Yukari's Arcanum "Danmaku Bounded Field" as being on the boundary of Spell Card and straight up murder. Gotta say I'm not sure I'll ever beat Yukari, even if I do beat Perfect Cherry Blossom there's still the other games to play and I don't think I have the patience to memorize this.
If you get through Ran, you can get through Yukari, I think.
@@Hawlo Yeah, but at this point I'm just trying clear the game. I'm not sure if I'll even do the extra stage after I 1cc it. Heresy, I know.
It's funny to me how underwhelming the original Danmaku Bounded Field has become after all the fanmade variations of it.

your tips are really usefull! i FINALLY got trough extra stage thanks to you, so there's only one more thing to do...
Its refreshing seeing a non-perfect playthrough and it really brings into focus how terrifying boundary of life and death is. All the perfect runs on youtube don't really capture the feel of whats going on at all.
If any touhou stage is to give you an adrendaline rush, this is one.
I've only barely beaten this stage...BARELY. I can only imagine the struggle if there were little to no similarities in any of the attacks.
Doesn't it look more like that Yukari is the actual instigator of the spring snow incident, owing to her own quotes and the story's events.
I'm pretty sure she was the one who actually messed with the boundary of the living world and the netherworld at Yuyuko's request, if memory serves.
Ahhh the phantasm stage... one of 4 stages that I've yet to beat (other ones being 11, 12.8 and 15 extra stages).

I've always loved ZUN and other scripter's abilities to sync up the music so the intensity/melody of the song matches where you are in both the stage and the start of boss fights. Like how ZUN did the same thing at 7:37 where if you're going through the dialog at a normal pace the melody of Necrofantasia starts _right_ as the battle starts.

@@MegamanOmega184 Are you sure it's intentional? After all, one requires killing Ran's first non at the exact right pace, and the other requires going through the dialog insanely slowly.
@@minepose98 IF memory serves, it doesn't involve you going through the dialog "insanely slowly", rather it involves you going through it at the pace it automatically goes through.
Reasons's to love Sakuya: I can deal with the yellow bullets and the aimed shots right before Yukari and still have bombs to work with~ because seriously fuck those aimed shots, they are way too fast >_>
As for attacks, Curse of Dreams and Reality is nice, but I like to bomb through it, Balance of Motion and Silence is way too easy compared to the clusterfuck that is Banquet of 12 General Gods (counter clockwise movement does the trick for M&S), Mesh of Light and Darkness can go to Avici for all I care, especially because Ran's version is so much easier. Xanadu of Straight and Curve is so much easier than Charming Siege I almost rage at that card, same with Yukari's Spiriting Away (though that may be because of faster bullets). Butterfly in the zen temple is still not Nazi and Double Death Butterfly can also go and die in the deepest pits of Avici.
Is it wrong I prefer Shikigami "Chen" over "Ran"? I find it easier, even if I had accidents where Chen hit me straight in the hitbox :c Boundary of Youkais and Humans can be routed but I suck at all survivals so I just bombed through this shit. Boundary of Life and Death is fun, though I do dislike when she adds the (aimed?) blue butterflies. Yukari's Arcanum is another "I died twice, was on my last life and bombed the final 4 waves after dying to the first two because I suck". But whatever, I can say your videos helped me a lot and I defeated Yukari thanks to you so thanks mr Omega.

lmao it seems like your videos bring great timing with them, as I just 1cc'd PCB with SakuyaA yesterday. Not focusing on staying under the boss due to homing sounds nice, but she takes F O R E V E R to deplete their health bars.

And now for a useless trivia fact: I have a competitively trained Kyurem in my Pokemon Ultra Sun game that I nicknamed after Yukari as it is the Boundary Pokemon, according to the Pokedex category.
Hmm. Does that make Kyurem "Boundary of Black and White"?
More like "Boundary of Ideals and Truths", TBH. Kyurem symbolizes Humans as an empty husk, waiting to be filled by Ideals or Truths.

by the way, you can practice danmaku bounded field using touhou 8's spell practice if you' download a score file (or capture every single spell on lunatic). It makes it much easier! the spell is the last spell in the "last word" category. you can download the score file here eientei.boards.net/thread/1107/scorefiles-practice-completion. make sure to back up your own save file!
thprac is the only way i was able to beat this stage. it is incredibly helpful for games without spell practice.

If this was Yukari while she was still groggy, I'd hate to see her when shes fully awake.
And Kasen is still not make her debut in official game yet while the other Sages already have.

I would say it is easier on higher difficulty and harder on lower one.
It took me way more attempts to 1cc in easy than the latest parts berring 15.
I still need to capture lots of spells to fulfill one of the requirements for unlocking phantasm stage.
I wonder if you'll try this with SakuyaA.

You have any advice for Balance of motion and stillness?? I tried to start at the near bottom and move in a slow circle but I wasn't sure if the spiral circles are aimed at me or not.. How do I master that 2nd spell without bombing??
the spirals themselves aim at you, and the bullets from them don't
SakuyaA trivializes that spellcard. Start at the bottom left, and slowly work to the right. Go up about 1/3 of the way, and work towards the left. You'll capture it without issues.
@@PunYT good strategy except I'm using MarisaA though. I do LNB runs or extra stages without bombs or deaths..

Yeah no thanks. I don't think I'll even try beating this stage for a very long time. Anything that would take weeks or months of practice currently sounds very unappealing (since I just finished doing exactly that with GFW's extra stage like a week or two ago). Maybe someday.
It took me only some days of practice and even then, not that many tries. according to the spell card log, it took only 16 active tries at that. Trust me, this stage is easy mainly because it's just a harder version of extra, so most of the time you're just readapting old strategies to, well, deal with faster bullets or more bullet density.

How do you unlock the Phantam stage?
You unlock it after both beating the Extra Stage and capturing 60 different spell cards in the game. Though keep in mind, capturing the same spell card on different difficulties counts as a different spell card. So if you captures a bunch of spell cards in Normal mode you can go back and play through the game in Easy mode to probably get the rest of the spell cards to reach 60.

Yep. And according to Gensokyo logic the only reason you and I are different people is because of a boundary between us. Same goes for literally everything in existence. She can create nuclear fusion like Utsuho by manipulating the borders between atoms, become immortal like Mokou by manipulating the border between life and death, invent a sleep disorder for fun as she says in the dialogue at the end of this fight, invade the moon by blurring the border between fantasy and reality and stepping into the moon's reflection in a pond. It speaks volumes of the Lunar Capital's power that they defeated her first invasion.
