- Sometimes the lesser known, smaller cities and towns can be the best places to practice street photography as it really forces you to observe and be creative to come away with interesting shots. In this video I head to Gloucester and experiment with reflections, sub-framing and layering to capture some great street photographs. All shots in this video taken with the X-T2 and 50mm f2 lens.

Hi Tim. Just subbed. I've also been starting on 'reflective' photography, too for 2024: It's a good warm-up exercise when starting street photography. I have been really inspired by the photo book, 'Forever Saul Leiter'. I love abstraction, too, and agree with your observations in choosing shots...All the best.
Thanks for subbing! Sounds great, happy shooting 📸
Omg I saw myself I was walking infront of you at the docks whilst I walk to college 😊
Haha no way!
Hi. Another enjoyable video, great shots and music on the soundtrack
Thanks, John! Appreciate that 🙏🏻
Very nice and chill video. 3:46 was my favorite shot!
Thanks heaps! :)
A very pleasant ramble about town. I like your technique and vision.
Thanks, Jim! Much appreciated 🙏🏻
Enjoying this video from the states, cheers!
Thanks, Pedro! Glad to hear it :)
Some really nice images, enjoyed this video, Thanks for sharing,
Thank you, Tony! 🙏🏻
Love these POVs. So many good shots, im getting my action camera back this week, super inspired now. -and you got my graffiti crew mate DK saying; Hi, in your frame 15.28. Haha, awesome…
Haha thanks a lot man! Glad you’re enjoying the vids and feeling inspired! Looking forward to seeing your new work 👌🏻
I love watching the build and pay-off @ 12:12 🙌
Thank you mate! I really like that one ✌🏻
Well done Tim, love your walk- through and narrative and the jaunty music too!
Thanks mum! 🙏🏻
Another great video. I learned a lot from your graphic design background and experience in the field( which I lack of ), so I look at tings in a different way, seeing more things then before. Thank you.😀
Ah that’s made my day! Thank you. I make these videos in the hope they help other photographers, so I’m glad you found this one useful mate 🙏🏻
enjoyable video. good job Tim!
Thanks mate 👌🏻
13:15 nails it ! Great Job !
Thanks heaps! 👍🏻🙌🏻
Some really cool perspectives my dude! Glad I randomly stumbled upon this video, subscribed!
Thanks heaps! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the sub 🙌🏻
Nice one Tim! 👏
Cheers!
Wonderful advise, cant wait to apply 😊
Thanks a lot! Glad you think so. Happy shooting! 📸
Good job bro. I love in a small town to. I will trying to learn street photography. Thanks for the video.
My pleasure! Glad you found it useful 🙏🏻
Fantastic POV and very informative Tim! The photo at 13:15 is great
Thanks so much mate! ✌🏻🙌🏻
lovely captures!
Thank you, Kendra! 🙏🏻
you take some great reflection shots
Thanks a lot!
Your work is defo high quality. I’m only subscribed to about 8 RUclips photographers because most of the channels feature gear obsessed, hand and mouth flapping dimwits obsessed with sharpness, fast autofocus, and effing bokeh. Photography as art is anathema to them. Your Morocco photos were great as well!
Thanks a bunch, Jason! Really appreciate that. Definitely want to steer my channel away from the gear type stuff. Is tempting to do a what’s in my bag/gear type video as I know a lot of people like content like that but it’s not really what I’m interested in - will see how the channel evolves 🙏🏻
A what’s in my bag video (or any gear video for that matter) could be good if you relate it to specific photos you’ve taken. It’s when RUclipsrs go on about gear then don’t show a single image or show a few photos at the end that they put onscreen for 0.5 seconds.. haha. All the very best with the channel!
Thanks a lot mate, good advice!
Just discovered your channel, subscribed, great POV
Thank you, Paul! Really appreciate the support 🙏🏻
Good video, Tim! I especially enjoyed seeing a video from Gloucester having been there some years ago as well as seeing so many reflections which I also like to shoot.
Thanks a lot, Jos! Appreciate that 🙏🏻
nice work bro.. Im over in italy. Its cool seeing other cities from a real first person perspective.
Nice one! I’m looking forward to the next trip abroad for some more street photography
Stupidly late to the video but I am here, dropped a like and am laid in bed watching haha.
Appreciate that! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻
Another great video mate.
The wife is off to see her father over August in Murcia, so I'll take the opportunity with my free train card to explore the coastline of the med.
Nice one! Sounds ace. I’m desperate for a holiday, hopefully Amsterdam later on in the year 👌🏻
FStoppers brought me here.
I find your window reflection based street photography indeed very creative especially if you are too shy for "normal" street photography.
Thanks a lot mate! 🙏🏻
Thoroughly enjoyed watching, Tim! Particularly the use of reflections and "creating" a shot. I most liked listening to the narrations of your thought process!
Many thanks as always, Courts! 🙏🏻
No prob at all, Tim.
Was going to add that shot at 13:17 really reminded me of an expression that it is not the farmers job for a crop to grow, but to merely provide the right conditions.
Sort of in line with your comment about "creating your own luck", where getting yourself into the right place with some patience results in these amazing pay offs.
Lovely work in a smaller city. It's so fun to see how you adapted to changing weather and found some photos. Attitude is so powerful!
Thanks so much my friend! Much appreciated as always 🙏🏻
That was a really nice video 😊
Thanks Anthony!
Hi Tim, another great little video. I live in the beautiful little town of Whitstable, which is great for photography in general. With my now love of street photography I have found Whitstable a bit restrictive, on the other hand when out in a city my energy just comes alive and photo pop out everywhere.
Hey! Yeah totally get what you mean, nothing beats heading into a big city for street photography, but sometimes you’ve got to make do with what’s on your door step and get creative. But yeah, I can’t wait for my next London trip!
New subscriber but just wanted to say how much i enjoy hearing about your thought process and approaching different shots and techniques. Look forward to more content and bingeing your other videos! 😊
Thanks a lot, David! I really appreciate that mate. 🙏🏻
Great video. My town isn’t small, but I often find myself needing inspiration. Your video gives me much-needed ideas! Thank you.
Thanks a lot mate! Really glad to hear that. Happy shooting 📸
Excellent images and background information. Thank you.
Thanks, Roger! Much appreciated 🙏🏻
Hey Tim, love this format with the voice over. Really nice!
Hey Eliseo, thanks a lot man - appreciate that 🙏🏻
Grest video Tim. You give so many tips and ideas that I'll have to come back again to take it all in. Not a bad complaint though! Cheers
Thank you, Mary! Glad you think so :)
Great stuff! New subscriber!
Thank you! Appreciate the sub 🙏🏻
Great video mate - I’m finding the smaller camera I use these days the more confident I am :) I’ve been told off many times when using my bigger mirrorless cameras as they look like a camera lol :) Now strictly using my Panasonic gx9 and not having an issue at all :) I just look like a tourist now…
Hey Grant, appreciate that mate! Yeah 100% the smaller the gear the less attention for sure 👌🏻
A lot of great ideas, I am fairly new to street photography, so that really helped me to open up new horizons. Thank you!
Hey! Thanks for the comment, really glad to hear that :). Happy shooting 📸
Quality post, Tim. Reflections primary theme w/useful commentary and pics. Unique tip about curious onlookers who become image subjects.
Framing pics shop gate and bench my fav. 4th gate reflection w/centered subject works well, IMO, but others in the series too busy - eyes wander in search of focal point, if that makes sense.
Would help, IMO, if photos were numbered😊.
Had to increase vid volume to almost max to hear you - not so with other channels, so perhaps there’s something you can do at your end to remedy.
Suggestion: to increase search-related views and potential subscribers, add one or more hashtags topside in description (like #streetphotography, #Fuji. Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed the video :) - not sure on the audio side, sounds great on my phone and laptop and seems to be fine for others. Tried numbering pics but I don’t like it, prefer just having the pic up on a plain background :)
@@timjamiesonphotos Sounded perfect on my end.
Just subscribed because I can find so much value in your video!! Thanks for the great content.
I was wondering how much distance to the glass you are using and which focal length because I have a very hard time recreating these shots (just went out and tried it without much success). I think 35mm is a bit too short and 50 or even 85mm could be better focal length.
Another question was if you use autofocus because for me the camera was often focusing on the letters not the persons even with just a small focus point. So I used a high F stopp to get everything sharp and also focused manually as good as i could. But it seams you are using the autofocus in all your shots. Do you have some special setting (focus limiter) for the focus? It looked like you are using the smallest focus point possible.
Thanks for your help
Jens
PS: and sorry for the poor english I'm not a native speaker
Hey! Thanks for your lovely comment. When I do reflection shots I use single point auto focus, and experiment with aperture as well (I don’t care about grain, so will always raise the ISO to get the correct exposure once I’ve decided which aperture to use.) reflections are fun because you can just get creative with it and it’s all about experimenting. I tend to use a 50mm (full frame equivalent) for reflection shots as it compresses the scene a bit more than a wider focal length. Will do a full video about this in the future.
Wow, just found you today, no experience with street. So well done, what typical settings do you use. I am assuming not very fast and a midrange f stop. How often to people question what you are doing?
Thanks a lot, glad you think so! I usually shoot full manual, f stop and iso dependent on the light. People basically never ask what I’m doing, always shoot with a smile and open body language :)
Really great video, inspired me to pick up my camera and take some pics today. Could you do a wide angle street photography in a small town soon?
Great to hear! Glad it’s inspired you to go out and shoot. I’ll be picking up the Fuji 23mm soon, so will do some video with that lens once I’ve got the feel of it :)
Hello beautiful photos!! May I ask what kind of film filter do you use on Fuji? It has nice bright colors and good contrasts.
Thanks a lot! I shoot in RAW and post process my shots in Lightroom :)
Awesome video! What do you do to make your window reflection shot sharp on people that pass by?
Thanks! It depends on the effect I want to achieve but I tend to use a high aperture to get more of the scene sharp and then high iso to compensate and get the right exposure - I don’t mind about noise from high iso in my photos :)
@@timjamiesonphotos I think my question was wrong, sorry, I’m dutch 😂. I mean: how do you manage to focus on people in reflections? Autofocus wont work, but I guess I wont be able to manually focus that quick.
Hi Tim, thanks for your share. May I ask what's the model of the device you used in this video? It looks like a Fuji Camera.
Hey, thanks for the comment. It’s a Fujifilm X-T2 :)
when shooting reflections in particular, what settings do you use and what focus system please. and i guess you use single AF on your subject, but do you find that the focus wants to wander and try to focus on the foreground (when the foreground is out of focus intentionally)
Hey! I tend to use single AF on my reflection shots as sometimes I want to focus on the reflection itself and other times I want to focus on something through the reflection. Probably better to manual focus though as that gives more control but it’s too slow a process for me :)
@@timjamiesonphotos Cheers Tim, i'm currently going through your POV vids, they're great, could you do one which you show viewers what you do, how you do it etc, such as composition, which focus points, which metering modes etc. No - one seems to do these kind of videos on youtube, i believe it would be killer if you can do it, especially to newbie street photographers 👍📷🤞💯
I enjoyed your video although street photography is not my thing. I wouldn't have the nerve!
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video even though street isn’t your thing! It’s a lot of fun, would recommend!!
Could I ask what camera you're using on this shoot?
Fuji X-T2 :)
Do you ever come to Worcester?
I’ve never been! But keep meaning to go there and make a video
One thing I'm always concerned with is whether I can share street photography photos (on websites like unsplash, or videos etc.) of someone else without asking for their permission, especially their face is clear and focus is on them. I have been reading about laws and regulations but can't find a clear answer.
You’d need to check the policy of the websites you’d want to upload your images to. In the UK it’s fine to take photos of people in public and publish them online :)
@@timjamiesonphotos thank you
The security guard was misinformed....you were on a public street. There's no expectation of privacy in public spaces. But, it probably wasn't worth the effort to argue the point.
Sadly no, I was in a residential area owned by a private company so you’re not allowed to photograph there. I didn’t mind!
@@timjamiesonphotosI doubt that the private company owns that street you were standing on. It was directly off of the city square and not gated. But it doesn't matter.
Really useful video Tim. Our theme in @urbanphotographyclub this month is reflections.
Thanks, Patricia! Really happy to hear that 😁
