Ah yes, exactly! One person’s trash is another’s treasure as they say. Definitely subjective. I’m hoping to visit Mexico next year, would absolute love to photograph your country 🙏🏻
Thanks for this video - and many of the others. I found your talking through your process and how you went about getting some of the shots particualrly interesting. Also some really good photos!

Yeaaap boring is relative. But I will say people in Europe have more walkable cities vs the small suburbs in the US where I live are full of big roads and malls to cross 😂 but you’ve inspired me to take a chance

Thanks for your video! I found your channel today and just thought your videos are amazing! I was surprised to see Cheltenham on your channel as a new subscriber. I used to study at Cheltenham but never really saw the town this way. This video has really brought back some good memories whilst studying there, and it gave me a new perspective of the town I used to spend so much time at! Thanks!
Nice video and you caught some great moments. Living just down from the road from you I find that people are more aware of me. On a good day I’ll come away with less than 30 images and that’s before the cull. The other weekend we went to London and I came away with 350 images, walking all day. More to photograph and people less bothered 😊
Very cool photos Tim. Living in Gloucester I have been to Cheltenham many times for some street photography. I think it offers more photo opportunities than where I live. I also enjoy going to Bristol. It is the closest thing to London in this area. Regards, Manu
Another good video Tim, thanks. I'm not far from Cheltenham and know those streets quite well. I reckon you could get some interesting shots during the festivals...especially the food festival (I did get one of my favourites there a few years ago). I need to do another walk around Stratford-upon-Avon (closest to me) so thanks for the inspiration.
Hi Tim, I think the problem with the modern day you tuber or social media photographer is the demand to produce work. Martin Parr et al had the luxury of no pressure to produce work daily or weekly, so all we see are their keepers and bangers. If Ansel Adam’s was right we’ll be lucky to get 12 keepers a year. It’s nice to see your thought process at work and you have some good tips, but it is extremely hard for a street photographers work to stand out as there is so much available and so much of it is a bit meh. What I did like and it maybe something you could turn into a project is the hidden faces, that concept might be quite fruitful. I think that project work should not be shared in the making (unless the project is the making!) hold that back as a unique piece of art shared only in your chosen format when the time is right, then people can see just the best work and it will have a value as it would only be available in your chosen format. Just my twopenny’s worth. Take care, Toby
Good post. Twelve keepers a year seems low these days, but may be accurate, especially if one can only get out at weekends. I can go out many times in Gloucester, and get nothing!
Thank you for a fantastic video. I loved the fact that you described your thoughts as you showed each photo 😀. At the age of 63 I have just taken up photography and I have started to enjoy dabbling with street photography with some small successes. My question is a general one, which is what do you actually do with all of the photos you take. Do you “publish” them anywhere? Do you show favourites on a website or other - in other words who gets to see them? This is something I am trying to get my head around as I start to increase my portfolio.
Ah thanks! Glad you enjoyed and welcome to the street photography club! I share my work on this channel, my website and in the future plan to produce some small zines or books :)
Wow Tim! I wish my boring town had as much foot traffic as yours. I was at the weekly farmer's market last Saturday and got a nice dog portrait and a vendor portrait (that I haven't shared yet). I did miss two I've been kicking myself over, a gentleman caring a plant and two young women with matching flower arrangements. I know, it's street photography, you're gonna miss a few. I'm trying not to beat myself over it too badly.
Hello Tim, thanks for a great video. I'm really loving the colours on these pictures, the skin tones in particular. Where these pictures taken on the X-E4 with the 23mm f2 lens? Which film simulation did you use? Did you change anything to the film simulation? I didn't expect skin tones I like as much from a modern mirrorless camera. (My R8 doesn't do this well; my 5D classic does but it's big).
Wow you have people walking on the street which is amazing! We spent most of the time on highway and traffic in cars which makes it extremely hard for street photographers like myself 🫠 plus the killer heat
@@timjamiesonphotos Yeah, it's all relative. I live a very small town in Pennsylvania, USA. Although there is a "retail strip" in town, the streets of town are usually pretty empty. BTW, there is a town named Cheltenham in Pennsylvania. It's a suburb of Philadelphia. Take care!
Enjoyable post, notations and commentary helpful. Lady w/hat and flower, and 3 dogs topside view my fav. Making extraordinary images from ordinary human activity is acquired talent, IMO. Did you take up the “free hugs” offer?
It seems as though you don't stop to take your photos. Is that correct? I do. I don't know how to walk and take photos at the same time. Could you give some tips as to how to do that?
It really depends on the situation! I used to stop and wait a lot, now I tend to shoot mainly on the fly. Definitely want to have a fast shutter speed if you’re moving a lot. I try not to have mine lower than 1/250 - if light isn’t great then I don’t mind boosting my iso. Then it’s all about practice. I use the viewfinder but also look down at my screen and ‘shoot from the hip’ too :)
This is NOT a boring town AT ALL! My town (1 square + a few empty streets around) is boring. If my town was as yours, I would be one of the happiest street-photographers.
Boring is relative, it’s very dull to me, when you compare it to a place for traditional street photography which is usually a massive city. Appreciate it’s not as boring as where some people are, but it’s still a much more difficult place for street photography than a big city :)
Sure looks a whole lot less boring than Perth, Western Australia... Haha~! Do you crop your images much? I'm always so finicky about the edges. Also, do you do any exposure compensation?
Haha I’ve been to Perth a few times, it’s not that bad!! I try not to crop at all if I can help it, none of the images in this video are cropped, all with 35mm ff equiv lens. I tend to shoot in full manual and then set a range for auto iso, so no need for exposure comp :)
I also live in Cheltenham and sometimes I really struggle to find anything interesting. I only shoot black and white film now so it's even more of a challenge. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Is your city boring? Move to US, avoid any big city, is not only very, very, very boring but sometimes dangerous too, try it, you have no idea what boring means
If you were to use a zoom lens you would not have to catch up to people and hope you get a shot. Why use such a tiny camera? I am glad you don’t always use the evf as it telegraphs you are taking a photo. I don’t understand the need to have people going across the frame. I do document street photography so I just take a photo of what is. Why use the neutral term partner, it was his girlfriend?
Got a portfolio I can look at? Before I take any of this even a tiny bit seriously I’d want to see your photos to know if you actually have a clue about street photography or not. And why do you care if I say girlfriend or partner? 😂
He doesn’t “need” people in the frame; that is just what he enjoys to have in his photos. Filling the frame the way he likes with a shorter focal length looks a bit different than filling the frame with a longer focal length because of the different depth of field each will give at the same aperture.
