  • mixing and talking...discuss anti-perfection, the fixer upper truck, and the harbor freight mixer...I've had a few comments from pros...one that seems to get me...others losing their minds over my disregard of convention. Again, I'm not a pro...this is a very rural property and my standards for this job are clearly not high, but the concrete will outlast the house...will season changes crack it? not yet after 5 months. here comes winter!

    I think a man working outside on his own place, feels more like a man……only thing missing here is the icy cold bohemian style beer, and the Morgan Freeman narration. Haters gonna hate. Cynical A holes will judge. All I see is a mother beautiful bridge (another movie ref). Great job! You’re a lucky man that has a wonderful supporting wife that appreciates your work. That’s all that matters in life. I’m seeing this video because it fit YT algorithm, not because I’m friend or family, but one things for sure….I’d be fortunate to be your neighbor. Cheers!!

    I came across you video while checking out reviews for the mixer. I saw all of it since I rather watch videos from DIY people. Soooo, believe or not there is some people out there that are interested in videos like yours. Thanks for sharing your work.

    I've got that same mixer and been using it for several years, works great. A couple things I would've done 1) Used 80lb bags 2) filled a bunch of gallon jugs with water, 1 jug per 80lb bag, this way 3) you get a new batch going while dumping the last one as you've got the exact amount of water needed no guessing just dump it in and 4) use the top of your form and a long 2x4 or similar to float your slab.

      Good advice. I really do like using the 80s, but I woulda wore myself out, so I opted for the 60s. Trying to save the body as I age 🤣

    I have a concrete mixer but it isn't economical to do this with 20kg bags that cover 0.01 m3 each, costing $8 AUS. To cover 1m3, you would need 100 bags costing $800.
    Delivered by a concrete mixer truck, it costs only $220 per m3. I've laid three slabs by having it delivered and had the help of a mate. Can you get concrete delivered in your area as you would avoid all this hard work. Hats off to you for your effort.

      Thanks much!! I LOVE readymix trucks!! In this case I was trying to protect my new-ish driveway. You're definitely right, though...way more cost and time effective to have the truck come out for pretty much anything over a yard.

    It's called concrete burn and some people get it and some people don't. Next time mix in a scoop of regular Portland cement into each bag and it will be more creamy and the broom will look way better, and it will make it not have so much bleed water. I'm js

    • @Mr.Handy-ish
      @Mr.Handy-ish  2 года назад

      Thanks for the actual name of it! I'll have to try the extra cement add...especially when I want a smoother finish. We get some ice here, and the extra traction will be welcome. The deck that was there got so slick! Not sure yet what I'll do for steps. Concrete (block?) or just wood. I'm always happy to learn from people that know!! I just don't have the money to hire them, so I appreciate the free advice/education!!

    Very hard to watch. Why put wire if you just leave it on the bottom ? Why not fill it to the top of your forms and screed across ? Why not pour in smaller sections so you could do better work ?

      Similar to a couple other comments. I'm no pro...did you watch other videos in that series? On second thought, those may be hard for you to watch, too if you're a pro or a perfectionist. Also...shocked by number of views this got! Lol... I'm not trying to give a tutorial on how to properly pour concrete, however, I am happy with the result!

      @@Mr.Handy-ish I wasn’t trying to put you down in anyway, I apologize if it came out that way. I’m Not a professional, but I’ve poured my new 30x40 garage myself and I just broke it up into 10x10 sections because I was using my own small mixer and it came out beautiful. What's with the bucket move a little closer and dump it than drag it over

    • @Mr.Handy-ish
      @Mr.Handy-ish  2 года назад

      I did that this last time...either works. I wasn't wanting to have to move alot, but the bucket works fine, too...gets it right where you want it. I also wasn't sure how long I'd be taking to pour the whole thing. This was my biggest pour in one shot without having a ready-mix truck come out. If ya wanna skin a cat, there are certainly many ways to do it. Lol, if you read my channel description, you'll see I anticipated people scratching their heads at some things I do. 🤷

      Don't judge it too harshly...as many have commented, I'm not using it to its best potential in this video. I could certainly put more in than 60 lbs at a time. What brand was yours?

    • @Mr.Handy-ish
      @Mr.Handy-ish  2 года назад +1

      Oh who knows for sure...suppose I was thinking it's awkward to keep moving it, or maybe I wanted to keep it cleaner. Others have made good suggestions, too. I've used it a few different ways. If I were smart, I'd make some sort of moveable chute to direct it when dumping. They probably make something for that purpose.

    This mixer can handle3 80lbs bags per run, why are you mixing so little?

    • @Mr.Handy-ish
      @Mr.Handy-ish  2 года назад

      I've used two 80s before and thought that was too much...personal preference, I suppose. Handle gets a bit heavy, and depending on what it's sitting on, it'll start sinking in. 2 bags it'll do for sure. If it's done three easily for you, that's good to know!! I wouldn't push it that hard personally.

You're not the only one who commented about that and other rules I didn't follow. I even changed the title to reflect that. It turned out pretty cool, though...with all its imperfections.
