Thank you for the video! My Maytag dishwasher is over 20 years old and looks exactly like the one in the video. The machine wouldn't run unless we held the door closed, which is what lead us to this video. I took it apart and found 1 of the sensors clicky part was almost gone while the other one was still very tall. I found the part on Amazon and it will be here Friday. I hope that once it's all back together, it continues as it has for all these years. Maytags were built to last!

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders The part arrived yesterday. I installed it and now the machine is back to working like normal! Thank you so very much!! The part was about $30 on Amazon; quite a cheap fix for a dishwasher.

THANK YOU!!! I'm just a young, dumb 25 year old! I had no clue that a dishwasher has a separate fuse on the panel. It tripped on the panel for some reason. Tripped it back and she's fine now!

Great video sir. My cheap ass Americana Dishwasher is doing intermittent running tonight. I pounded on the front panel and so far so good lol. I am sure one of those switches is going bad. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for watching John k, we hope the video helped! These little switches begin to work intermittently as they fail...due to the spring inside part.
Over time, the little spring loses its tension & no longer works correctly.
Replacing your switch should solve your problem. Keep us posted!

Mine is getting power and the door latch seems fine. Our dishwasher repeatedly runs for two or three seconds and then pauses for about 10 seconds and does that over and over throughout the cycle? Any ideas? Does not appear to be any interruption in power all lights and everything remains on during each pause.

Hi! Can you possibly help me? I did all the steps, but it is not working, and It seems the problem is that the door handle is not retracting at all - in other words, it seems stuck in the "up" position and my pressing on it will not move it down. What did I do wrong on the reassembly?

Thanks for watching & sharing your comment. Let’s get this figured out!
It may be a good idea...how crummy this sounds...to take a few minutes & take the dishwasher back apart. After gaining access to the handle, it’s important to inspect & verify that all wires are connected to parts properly & not bound up interfering with other parts.
Next, verify that the spring loaded door switch sensors are properly positioned & secured. Take a few minutes & try to see if there is any other signs of any interference with the operation of the handle/Switch.
From here, let’s reassembled dishwasher & test it.
      Keep us posted!

Hi Michael! Thanks so much for your answer. I also want to say that I appreciate the detail in your video, including the mention of the fact there is not a missing screw, because I actually thought it was some kind of cost-cutting measure in the manufacture of the dishwasher!
Anyway, an update: So, yesterday I ran through the install twice, and did check all wires for binding, etc. At first, I thought that the fact the handle was stuck in the up position was maybe the way it was supposed to be since the door was open after all. But then I started experimenting with moving the handle before the assembly was put back on the door, and even once it was screwed down, I was able to move it with a flat head screwdriver. It was only once I put the cover panel back on, the final step, that the handle was totally immobilized.
So, I went back to basic principles and re-installed the original part, and sure enough, the handle was once again completely free to move. I then contacted the business I ordered it form, and once verifying it was the correct part (and to the naked eye, the new one looks just like the old one) I now think it is a case of the plastic piece being slightly out of spec, inhibiting the part from lining up properly with the door latch. They are sending me a new one, that hopefully will not suffer from the same problem!
It is a pity, because I was so proud of myself yesterday, despite cutting my hand on the sharp metal inside the door that I was being so careful to avoid. I will certainly keep you updated and my notification bell is on, as well as email notices of replies. Thanks!

Hello again. So, the new part arrived yesterday, and I installed it today. Unfortunately, the dishwasher still is not working. The new part solved the problem of the handle being unable to move, but now the door will not latch. It is like the latch is not long enough, because sometimes it does latch but very loosely so that I can pull on it and open it without depressing the handle. So, I thought maybe I did not set the new part properly and so it was not able to latch, but I redid it and the same problem exists. I am now thinking that maybe the new parts are not able to fix a 19-year-old dishwasher? It is the correct part since I gave them the model and serial number, but when they sent me the new part they said that manufacturers change parts all the time. In the video, your dishwasher looks just like mine except mine is black on the outside door.
Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks for the update! That’s a bummer. We recommend going to:
      repairclinic.com
This website is amazing! You can enter your make/model Appliance & find all parts!
After entering your model/serial #, all the parts will show up. Next, scroll through parts & find your part. From here, let’s verify if the part is the same as well as the part # is the same on this site & the site you purchased new part from.
This will help determine if the part has been slightly modified over the years or not.
      Keep us posted. 😎👍

Thanks for the reply. I recommend purchasing new Switch Connection parts. You can purchase the entire part which includes
      1. Switch Connection Housing Bracket
      2. Both Electrical Latch Switches
We purchased ours off Ebay brand new. We also recommend purchasing from
      RepairClinic.com
They have every single part for all units/machines. 😎👍🔧🔩

Thanks for watching. If you apply pressure to the latch portion of the dishwasher after it shuts off... does it turn back on? If yes, your latching mechanisms are beginning to get weaker and not engage properly. Replacing latch mechanisms may solve issue. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply. You may need to inspect all internal wiring and verify no loose wire connections or signs of damaged wires.
Your latching mechanism’s may be really trying to reconnect the electrical system to get your dishwasher to continue its cycle however the spring loaded tabs on the locking mechanisms may be worn out to the point where even you pushing on them, they are still not creating the proper connection.

DIY With Michael Borders ok so we just bought this house and I never had this kind of dishwasher. Apparently pushing start twice pauses the wash and then it shuts off.
If you hit start once and hear nothing, it then washes within five minutes. Who knew?
