Pacific Rim Could've Been a Great Franchise

In 2013 Guillermo Del Toro released the Kaiju classic, Pacific Rim. It was a great movie and a promising start to a new franchise. But after just one sequel, an anime show, and some comics, the franchise has gone quiet with no third film in the works. So let's talk about why the first film did right, and where Uprising went wrong.
bro dropped one of the best kaiju films then left the genre.
Nice dig at the mcu.
he said “lets make a movie then dip out”
@@anubusx would it be a Tex video if I didn't?

Underated.
Honestly a shame that we never got a Sequel to Pacific Rim. I would have loved to see more from that universe
At least they didn't hire a new director and make a terible sequel that destroy everything the first movie build.

Mr Copy and Paste
There's another thing i want to add,
1) never kill OG heroes from previous movie.
2) never makes Kids as soldier unless the original is about Kids as soldier.
3) every sequel need to make it grittier because the audiences age especially Kids already grow up.
Could have worked if maybe
1) don’t kill your hero’s off in a non heroic way (mako in contrast to every other pilot in the fist movie)
2) have Charley Day’s character doing the kid as soldiers thing (because evil)
3) keep the gothic feel instead of going generic action movie themed
There’s a lot of good ideas in this movie but non of the originals soul (bit of an issue when making a sequel)
Yes, do not utilize children as the main protagonist. They get annoying real fast. The trope is getting tired. The reason they went with children is because they were trying to sell the film to kids and eventually toys. Milly Bobby brown's character and her chubby friend in the monster verse is also annoying.
@@barrymccaulkiner7092yes why Millie and her fat friend in the movies they don’t bring anything to the story they just increase the budget I didn’t see them in the new movie trailer so I think it’s a good news.
I disagree with all of those
@@misaelacevedo7105When did PR ever have a Gothic feel?
can we talk about how Amara's flashback scene was supposed to be emotional but it turned out to be way comical than it should've been
I laughed too hard.
I don't even remember who that is 😭
@@themosa I only remember her name cause of just that scene and how it utterly fails compared to Mako's flashback
and how they killed Mako to make room for her even though Mako piloting Gipsy Avenger with her adoptive brother could have had some interesting potential.

You mean third?
@@udhayveersingh1855 there is no second movie yet :(
@@udhayveersingh1855 this is a case where the fandom pretends that a sequel doesn't exist.
(or that it's a non-canon spin-off)
Read Occam’s razor (unless you’re super anti newt/hermann) I consider it the true sequel. Basically takes the idea that some kaiju were left on earth after the breach was closed, and the ksci duo are still connected to that hivemind and are effecting each other. Basically tackles the idea of how connecting with the hivemind like they did in the first movie in a much better way than “uprising” did
@@udhayveersingh1855 sad reality you must live in
Thinking back on this, I now realise that I can vividly remember each kaijuu in GDT's PacRim, but I legit can't recall a single kaijuu from Uprising…

Cause there were only three in that movie and they all merged into one and they were all very basic

Even power rangers had more realistic mech fights
Well, it is fair to at least talk about Uprising.

@@kuro._aertI mean realistically the movie would just be nuclear mouth beam = kong melts from being near it😭 I don't know if that's gonna be a long movie💀

The sad part is that a lot of great ideas were there. Mako's adoptive brother? Newt getting brainwashed? An evil Jaeger? Hybrid drones? A fusion Kaiju? All could have been used to great effect. But they completely botched the execution, killed Mako, replaced her with a boring white teen girl with the exact same backstory and added the trololololo song.
Honestly, I don't think they knew how big a cult following the first Pacific Rim had, when making Uprising. They just assumed it was just another dumb monster vs robot film, like Transformers.
Let's not forget - the first trailer and main trailer go unbelievably HARD
Pacific rim is a good standalone film.
Another small thing that the sequel did wrong was making the jaegers generic. I’m the first filsm they each have completely different feels and so did the pilot suits. They were all unique to the country of origin. But in uprising they all feel like power rangers
Different soundtracks as well. Like when cherno and typhoon were fighting and it switched back to cherno beating the kaiju you could hear the soviet music
all have different weaknesses too that go into how they are defeated
You mean that one bad fan movie? Yeah anyways it's not canon so...
Pacific Rim is like an artist who made a beautiful painting to amaze people and gets credit for their creativity.
Pacific Rim: Uprising is like someone looks at the artist’s painting, throws it into the fire and puts his own artwork filled with cringey memes and poorly drawn fanfic hand art.
Pacific Rim: Uprising? Never heard of that. Is that some kind of fan movie to Pacific rim?
@@twistytwistry yea
Honestly the new director being a TV director makes tons of sense
Back in 2013, while i did deeply enjoy pacific rim i was perfectly content with it being a one and done. Especially considering how the film ends, not really leaving the door open to potential sequels without undoing what the first film accomplished. Which is exactly what the sequel did unfortunately.

PACIFIC RIM itself was like a great 3d film in a trilogy, where we never got the first two, showing the rise of the kaiju and the rise of the Jaegers, leading to mankind's last stand. A pity in a way.
They should have done a prequel instead, would have been great to see some mark 1 and 2 jaegers.
Absolutely! You could have some epic Kaiju fights with earlier generations of Jeagers- the peers of Cherno Alpha and Gypsy. But noooo, let’s just make up new stuff.
If only we could go to a universe where all of Del Toros cancelled movies came out, like Mountain Madness, his version of the Hobbit, Justice League Dark, and Hellboy 3
So upset about his version of The Hobbit never getting made cause of all the arguing amongst the studios
@@TexYT the worse crime of the whole affair was making Ian McKellen cry, shame on them.
WE WERE DRIFT COMPATIBLE! “Theme music kicks in”!
The first film was perfect in what it set out to do, not the perfect movie but the perfect mech monster movie, it's clear that the people making it put pure creativity and attention to detail into it. They should give it another shot; bring back del Toro and the og director and retcon the second movie, if monsterverse can sell tickets, so can a retconed sequel.
Messed up they killed one of the best main characters in the 2nd. Would be cool if they did a sequel to Pacific Rim between the 1st and Uprising or used a drift connection of some sort to bring the characters back, but it would defeat their sacrifice. It was an honor growing up with the 1st movie and having neca figures to preserve the memories.

Literally I was the right age when the first Pacific Rim came out, it was a 10 year olds wet dream and I still love till this day, as for Uprising I gave it a rewatch not to long ago and I will admit had this been its own separate Giant Robot vs Kaiju movie not connected to Pacific Rim I would have enjoyed it in a dumb fun kind of way but because it is a sequel to the first Pacific Rim it really is a big slap in the face.
Something i loved about pacific rim is the worldbuilding and lore in it. That intro shows dozens of kaiju and jaegers in a matter of seconds and every one of them has a documented name, combat history, and background if you decide to look into it.
The Sequel Did the One thing I hated! It Killed Mako. The Fan Favorite, the Character that had the most potential. And she Died.
That was some Bullsh*t.
Coincidentally I literally finished watching pacific rim right as this video was uploaded

If there were any news for a 3rd movie, i think most of us could universally wish for it to be a prequal during the glory days
Well, Tex, I have some good news for you, because Legendary just announced a Pacific Rim prequel series
The first time I watched Pacific Rim was on a giant tv with surround sound and some nice 3d glasses for 2013, not the blue and red kind. It has been one of my favorite movies ever since then. To bad they never made a sequel. 👀
There should be a prequel! There’s literally source material and comics. I’m so glad they haven’t made a 2nd movie. Hope they do :)
I love how this is the same stuff that is happening with the Godzilla movies that we are getting. There is no sense of scale and it lacks everything what the first two movies accomplished.
Godzilla's franchise has been going back and forth between weight and scale far longer to the point fans can take it or leave it either way. Is Godzilla 98 for example a better G flick cause it had more weight than let's just say gvk? Absolutely not. Is the godzilla animated series worst than the godzilla anime trilogy cause the latter has weight to godzilla but the former doesn't? Absolutely not. Godzilla works regardless of the style.
PR is an original IP that needs Guillermo's style to work, otherwise it just doesn't work as PR if it tries to do any other style.
@@Kaiju-bm4ts The problem is that those were distinct different movies, series. The monsterverse is intended, as its name implies, to be the same universe, a single saga, so seeing those inconsistencies is even more jarring for those that like one version more than another all in the same line of movies. "If Godzilla can run now why didn't he do that in the first one?", etc
@@nkeneca Um..because...it's a stylistic choice to make him run in one movie and slow in another? That's not a continuity connection. Let alone not a inconsistency. It's called variety. The franchise being versatile is why the MV (just like showa/heisei) doesn't stick to the same tones or styles in every movie and doesn't repeat the same style over and over again to the point it gets stale.
This is why I said the godzilla franchise hasversatility, PR doesn't
@@nkeneca But the monstervers has sort of explained why he can run now, he literally juices up more every movie he is in, even in the Monarch show which takes place after 2014 Godzilla shows that same version just 1 year later is already walking a bit faster not running but he definitely is not as sluggish as in the original film.
@@BlazeSwigglePlayzMcguess godzilla is a terrible morning person then, I can relate.
Honestly, the second movie had robots with rocket feet. That's enough for me to love it
The biggest issue with Pacific Rim is that there is clear disinterest in making a good film like the first one. Pacific rim uprising tried too hard to be like evangelion and other 90's anime where, which hurt the plot and aesthetics. The only three characters that actually returned were either killed off way too soon or acted differently. I think the biggest disappointment however is how it was placed in the wrong hands. Aside from pacific rim uprising, the only other media we've received is Pacific Rim The Black, an animated miniseries that tried to fix the problem uprising had, but somehow made its issues worse at the same time. How can you make a show that centers around two kids piloting a robot and go on an adventure with a boy that was secretly a kaiju superweapon? It strayed too far from the concept and as much as I hate to say this, the idea of a franchise is dead. Del toro stated that he was not interested in making another movie and legendary might not want to make a sequel as it would be too risky in the financial sense.
Just pointing this out there...Del Toro said one of his ideas for the PR universe was to have the precursors be future humans so.....if boy being a kaiju is far fetched then idk how precursors being humans themselves gets a pass.
@@Kaiju-bm4ts precursors dont turn into a giant fucking kaiju. A little boy turning into a giant kaiju doesn't make any sense at all unless there is some type of black magic.
@@smurgerburgerIt's Anime logic, that's why you can't really say it's canon at all.
Although, I liked the part where they make the mother experience what could have been finally reuniting with her husband. That was beautiful.
The show was good, I really enjoyed it but I must admit after like three or four episodes, I didn't feel like watching pacific rim anymore.
Still thousands times better than that fan made sequel.
I love the first one. It was such a great 3d movie. Adored it. The sequel was......there.
I've said it once, and I'll say it again. Best idea for a sequel would have been -
Jaeger Cold War.
No more Kaiju means suddenly a whole bunch of nations right next to each other with the tech to build nuke proof rock-em sock-em robots, plus the sudden revelation that Kaiju are technologically engineered and could be reversed. There's gonna' be fallout over that for sure. It's dark, it's gritty, it's action-y, and there's avenue for a big monster resurgence that doesn't just feel like a "somehow Palpatine returned."
I'd buy 10 tickets for something like that.
Also points if the Aussies are the evil overlords, seeing as they're canonically the ones with the primo MK5 Jaeger tech.
Pacific Rim gave me hope for a Mobile Fighter G Gundam film.
I’m just happy we got that first movie. Nothing could top that imo
one thing that not a lot of people know is that Hugo Martin, the game director of Doom 2016 and Doom eternal was working alongside Guillermo del Toro designing the Jaegers and Kaijus. if you look at the movie's behind the scene, you can spot him a few times.
another thing i never see mentioned about uprising is that none of the jaegers there have a nationality they're based on. a lot of the personality derived from the jaegers in the original was based on the ideas that people had about those countries and their cultures. for example; cherno alpha is aggressively russian with not only its theme music, but also the feeling of its WWII inspired design and heavy emphasis on armor and brute force. whereas, most of the jaegers in uprising don't really have that cultural identity, and instead come off more as a vague idea of a jaeger than a specific identity. makes sense that people often compare them to power rangers.
Now that you have listed the problems with the sequel I just realized something too. It really felt like the second film was trying to copy the first film but does not quite capture it. The Kaijus that were supposed to be the big bads was treated like your typical goons that got beaten by a bunch of children.
It does not capture the essence of the first film's fighting for humanity's survival.
This movie is the reason i like mech genre in the first places
I hope Warner Bros reboots the Pacific Rim franchise for the Monsterverse so we can actually get a Godzilla X Kong VS Pacific Rim movie
this movie actually performed better in China but underperformed in the US because more people wanted to see Grown Ups 2 in theaters.
This "win" was so impactful for Sony they decided to make lightning strike twice when they released "Blended" opposite of X-Men Days of Future Past.
I got an idea, a small country with a long coast line (for example vietnam) they put all resources into a single jeager, the moive is about a duo who compete to become the pilot to defend the country, and they get help from other pilot that pay them a visit, or about a group of potential pilots get send aboard to train while the country is on count down
Seems you have missed it, but Guillermo said he's making a third movie, and has plans for a cinematic universe for Pacific Rim.
I absolutely love that in the recent months; there's been a bunch of RUclipsrs making videos on Pacific Rim. Hopefully it'll get the attention of someone high up and make this possible but... You can only hope right?
It actually sucks what happened in this universe. The first movie is one of the best if not the best Kaiju film of all time, then uprising killed the franchise leaving nothing behind. The black couldn't even save it. It honestly deserves another chance to be good and fulfill it's purpose as a good Kaiju universe
A prequel could maybe save it
@@BUENOWITHSOMEbuoNo well let's wait and see, there's a prequel tv show in active development!!!
You know why Pacific Rim's sequel failed? Because they "Godzilla x kong frozen empirized" it. I don't get why there is a double standard in the fandom towards judging that other movie. Is worse of a sequel than this one. Why they hate sequels that don't live up to the original standards, like Pacific Rim 2, Batman & Robin, the Star Wars prequels, any Transformers and Fast and Furious for being dumb, childlish, unrealistic, style over substance, an insult to the audience's intelligence, franchise killers but praise Godzilla x Kong Frozen Empire for being all that? Didn't we learn that movies can be intelligent and entertainment at the same time? Why you lowered your standards overnight? "DUMB" does not equals "FUN". Pacific Rim was intelligent and espectacular, it deserved a lot better, so did Godzilla 2014.
i stand by my opinion that pacific rim is the best live action kaiju movie and we need another anime
Now imagine if they made a sequel, Guillermo needs to come back.
Have you seen what ideas he had for a sequel? That garbage was 10 times worse than the actual sequel

There is a perfect universe somewhere where Pacific Rim and the Monsterverse are both a mutual success.
Imagine how happy Legendary is in that universe. And the fans.
If they used Del Toro's script, Uprising might have been better received.
The main difference you feel is like the first movie just goes hard af and you just get a dopamine rush everytime a Yeager hit a kaiju with a big punch, in the second movie it’s the opposite, it makes you feel stupid for watching it and the cheesy one liners are just embarrassing

May I recommend Getter Robo manga? It is pretty similar to this in a lot of ways, but a little more heightened with anime/manga craziness.
Of course! What is it?
@@TexYT Getter Robo manga is a mecha series that started in the 70s (one of the OGs of the genre) about the fight of humanity against the Dinosaur Empire. It is initially a simple story that was promotional material for the anime running at the time, but it got a sequel in the 90s, and started to really get insane. Also created the Gainax pose and heavily inspired Gurren Lagann. Unfortunately it is one of those manga with only fan translations and no official ones aside from a spin off. Although be warned that the story is unfinished due to the death of the author, but I'm pretty sure that Getter Robo Go has a conclusion, but don't quote me on that.
Order of the series is Getter Robo > Getter Rob G > Getter Rob Go > Shin Getter Robo> Getter Robo Arc

He didnt drop the genre, he was working on the scrip for the 2nd movie but the directors didnt wait for him because he also had other projects and they hired another guy to do the scrip, till this day I wonder how the 2nd movie wouldve been if Guillermos directed it
What happened with Universal as far as Guillermo del Toro and Zakk Penn's "Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom" script was concerned was Universal had budgetary concerns overt it. They ordered it to an overhaul and didn't secure the sound stages in Toronto two weeks before it was to go camera. Del Toro and Penn attempted to address the distributor's concerns with a pair of re-writes when Universal pulled the film off their release schedule. Wanda may have wanted the film to shoot in China, true enough, but by the time Universal made its decision, the window for del Toro to helm the picture had lapsed and he walked, moving on onto prepping "The Shape Of Water" since he contractually obligated to do so. Incidentally, this was the third time Universal screwed over del Toro over film budgets ("Hellboy III"" first, "At The Mountains Of Madness" , touted as an R rated flick starring Tom Cruise, second and "PR: Maelstrom").
Several months later, enter John Boyega and his production partner's company and Steven S DeKnight with their revamped version of Maelstrom's script and "PR 2" was back on the boards. Universal botched its marketing campaign from the get-go, by sequentially progressing to reveal the film's strongest visual effects scenes in the trailers and sneak peek clips. Aside from die-hard fans, why should the general audience of movie goers show up and see it in theatres when the movie's best parts had been spoiled.., well before its release.
“one of” nah, THE best kaiju movie ever made. PERIOD.
You should also cover the Animation versions of PACIFIC RIM
Would have been sick to see a crossover with godzilla and kong and that
Pacific rim was awesome. I loved that movie.
I believe that if Original Pacific Rim is release today it will be a huge hit.
So what happened was they made a kickass movie and never thought to make a sequel
Watching this video lowkey hurts cuz pacific rim was my childhood
im worried the monsterverse is slowly going down the pacific rim path. everything you said about uprising about lost scale, not feeling like its connected to the world of pacific rim 1 and the cinematography and lightweight of the jaegars is what the current adam wingard godzilla and king kong movies have felt like for me. except people are responding to those movies positively whereas uprising was slammed hard for the same things. i dont understand why
scale was never an issue in the Godzilla franchise. Showa Era Godzilla for example seems to be an inspiration for Monsterverse in terms of the monster fight scene. Unlike Pacific Rim, Monsterverse is much more consistent in terms of their own key elements (some social commentary a bit similar to the old movies like environmentalism, anti-war message etc...) while Pacific Rim 2 is basically like Michael Bay's Transformer but without the grittiness and the intense action scenes (which Pacific Rim 1 manage to achieve in its own style).
Godzilla's franchise goes back and forth so much with weight and scale it hardly matters anymore, fans can take it or leave at this point. PR is a IP that has less variety than godzilla and only works if you're mimicking the first film. Meanwhile godzilla works regardless of how you use him. People slam uprising cause it goes against what the first movie did. People don't slam godzilla for doing X Y and Z cause it doesn't go against anything he does most of the time.
There’s a good reason the scale is lost with Godzilla, it’s because most Godzilla movies now, Godzilla and the other Kaiju are around other Kaiju more often, we don’t get the human POV of slow, heavy movements because we’re not looking at the pov of other humans now, we’re following the Kaiju for the most part, which are the same size, we still know they’re big, but it’s way more action packed now because we’re following the Kaiju with other Kaiju. And also what the other guy says, with Godzilla, it doesn’t really matter, cuz Godzilla always goes back and forth and sideways and all of that, nothing you do with him is really out there because of how he’s been used in a variety of different ways
The first Pacific Rim is one of my favourite movies ever and really kick started my love for the kaiju genre, then cemented by the monsterverse. Such a shame the franchise was mismanaged like it was. How good would it have been for the Pacific Rim and Godzilla franchise's to have grown alongside one another. Most likely the two universes would have merged together at some point.
Apparently a second movie could happen if Guillermo Del Toro comes back. If that happens Hunnam will return as well, how exciting!
I believe that Pacific Rim will come back. We'll see in time.
i like how the wiki has multiple pages with 3 seperate sub pages (og movie, 2nd movie, inconsistencies)
This film and Independance Day are so alike.
Idk about you guys but I'm still waiting on this second movie everyone is talking about.
For me to summarize the issues with screen play, the first was good because you had that anticipation for every movement and could never be certain if that jab or hook or sword would reach the kaiju in time for it to count. Uprising made everything far too quick and fluid, and now the robotic flaws were lacking, removing that anticipation for the slowness of everything, and that’s what made the first so great. Anticipation
I think they could still do well with it. Just because the sequel that theoretically exists did bad, doesn't mean they can't just retcon it or do a prequel which i think a lot of people would like
what i kind of want to see if they continue pacific rim is a past one of the beginning of like the mark 1s or seeing what gipsy did before its battle with knife head or knowing the old jeagers and how they feel like romeo blue or tacit ronin and how they fought and how they ended up and the jaeger decommission sight that is what would bring me back to pacific rim and if they do it right too
I swear, they better make a prequel to revive the Franchise
It’s a shame because I loved the first pacific rim movie it was really awesome and badass in my opinion.
I honestly wish we got Del Toro to do GvK over Wingard where Del Toro gets Kaiju movies Wingard just feels like he scrolled through a MonsterVerse subreddit and paid attention to the posts demanding pure monster action and want nothing to do with humans
I wish this movie got a sequel too bad it didn’t
I swear all of you NPCs cannot come up with nothing new!
Who thinks they should make a few movies like this in the monsterverse, maybe with the main one as jet jaguar
Personally I would love to see them try again but slowly. For example a live action show series centered around a Jager engineer or even worker during the start of the Kaiju crisis would be perfect for audience and writers alike. Hell it can even retcon the original if it meant a new story could be made avoiding the mistakes of uprising.
