Oh my gosh you provide a great and simple explanation! I have never used any of the angle marks on my cutting mat. This was great - you answered all my questions!
Mentioning the importance of bias in sewing triangles together is a very valid point that so many people forget about. A clear, thorough video. Thanks.
Oh my goodness, I've watched half a dozen video's on 60* triangle cutting and this is by far the best and most effective I have seen! Very calming, by now my blood pressures up :) Thank you so very much Alanda, and for the tip about adding back in the quarter inch before taking that first cut.
I've avoided triangles because I didn't know how to cut the or sew them together.... You've explained this so simply. Will have to try this now. Thank You.......................
So happy we have been able to help Susan. You can make so many lovely projects with triangles. We have a project coming up very soon using triangles. :)
Thank you so much for showing how I can use my cutting mat for 60 degree triangle cut. It has saved me $$ for the 60 degree ruler. I really enjoy your tutorials and learn a lot.
Your tutorials are so clear and well presented. Thank you for your knowledge and time - it is so satisfying to learn the things to best utilize your tools.
using measures on cutting board (&of course ruler templates) for cutting 60degree triangles and yes, positioning non-stretchy part on bottom was most helpful 👍AND saving the first cut too -- great tutorial!
Your video explains this part better than any I've seen so far. Your instruction is great, but what I don't understand still is how to get the other part of the triangle 3", or does a 6" automatically have the smaller end of the triangle shorter?
Thank you for making this video! I have all my triangles cut out for a quilt that's laid out similar to the table runner here, and after sewing my first row together, realized the triangle tips weren't going to turn out nice and sharp when it's all assembled. I watched some other tutorials on how to do it, but this was really helpful in visualizing what I needed to fix to get it to work. Really super clear and helpful.
Thank you Victoria. Triangles are fun to use in projects once you know how. Don't forget to check out our video on the triangle table runner. These look really lovely when they are done. The Triangle Table Runner Tutorial
Thank you for this tutorial! I just embarked on my very first quilt (don't worry, I already know how to sew) which includes triangles. I love the pattern, but it's a free one with sparse instructions, so this helps a lot!
Thank you verry mouch for this lovely tutorial! I love your voice , how smooth and music for my ears! I will follow you! Happy Xmas and Happy New Year! Greeting from Spain!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment Roxana. Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year to you over there in gorgeous Spain I've only been to Barcelona but I loved both the place and the people. I had a wonderful time. 🙂
I leave the dog ears on until I have sewn the triangles together. It helps to line up the seams. But once the triangles have been sewn together the dog ears are not needed so you can trim them then. Or you can leave it until you have sewn all the triangles together. But you will want to trim them before adding the sashing.
great tutorial. I still struggle with getting those bias sides sewn together so they line up when opened. I have ripped out so many, I'm about to throw out the whole project. I cannot figure out what I am doing incorrectly. I line them up just like you show. The first two go together fine, but then adding on the rest is where it just starts going awry !!! yikes.

Very helpful!
..using spray starch may help with sewing bias seams.
Thank you for the tip
So do I not need to cut the bottom at 6 1/4 to make equallitual/sp
Hi, when do you cut the dog ears? Or do I not need to? Thanks for this--it's really helpful!
I leave the dog ears on until I have sewn the triangles together. It helps to line up the seams. But once the triangles have been sewn together the dog ears are not needed so you can trim them then. Or you can leave it until you have sewn all the triangles together. But you will want to trim them before adding the sashing.
I cut threw a sayare and made triangle
The 60 degree line also shows 30 degrees???
I have been doing a quilte and non of my triangles meet in the middle so I know what I was doing wrong now...!
Excellent, happy to hear the video helped.
How do you determine the size of the triangle? I’m guessing it’s by the width of the strip? When you are using your mat to cut….do you add the 1/4”?
Decide on what you want the finished size of your triangle to be. So if you want a triangle with a finished size of 5 ½" cut the fabric strip 6" wide.
@@alandacraft Thanks
Saw placement but what are you doing?
What if your pattern is facing the wrong way to cut for your selvages/bias edges
You will need to be careful sewing the pieces together as the edges will be more likely to stretch, Joanne. I suggest you pin well.
What is the other width 6 by what?
great tutorial. I still struggle with getting those bias sides sewn together so they line up when opened. I have ripped out so many, I'm about to throw out the whole project.

We actually bought them from here: www.ericas.com/quilting/tools/misctools.htm
