    I like the changes to the final fight because it makes it clear Xehanort was struggling with whether to try purging the darkness or just kill Baldr. Though, with the Ventus stuff, I'm still not sure if Xehanort legitimately thought Ventus could be the Child of Prophecy or if he still thought it was himself and was just trying to fool Eraqus.

      Or it could be Xehanort really see Ventus as Child of Destiny like himself ... So he try to do what Baldr (who also the Child of Destiny) did to Xehanort ... Guiding the Child of Destiny into the way of darkness ...

      @t_g_gamerftw5075 Год назад +13

      Seems to me considering the conversation between Xehanort and Vanitas, that he likely really thought that Ventus was the Child of Destiny.
      To me it would seem like Xehanort thought Ventus was the child of destiny because of how Ventus was able to summon a keyblade on destiny island and connect with another heart despite having his heart closed off to the outside world. In reality though, Xehanort was likely looking for Sora as it was Sora's heart that attempted to connect with Ven and not the other way around, but Xehanort misunderstood it as being Ven's heart being able to connect with others.
      It would also explain why Xehanort wants to go through with the keyblade war using Ven to summon kingdom hearts, as if Ven is the child of destiny like Xehanort believes, then due to the prophecy Ven would end up saving the world from darkness.
      Xehanorts whole relationship with Ven makes a lot more sense now with this update. Xehanort was initially trying to remove the darkness hiding in Ven, it ends up nearly killing him, Xehanort goes to let him die in peace, Ven survives, Xehanort concludes that miracle must be a sign he's the child of destiny, go put him with Eraquis to become stronger, then initiate the keyblade war so Ven can fulfill his fate as the child of destiny and save the world from falling to darkness.

    I think it's nice that Player's identity was more obscured through the changes since they were always a character to mirror the person behind the screen. It also adds to the other "official" instances with the Player character, like the black-coated person in the Uχ art as the blue robe in DR.

      @elsawithginathedreamdragon3952 Год назад +15

      That “black coated person” in the cover art of KHUX is actually Striletzia. The coat is actually white, but it appears black due to very specific lighting conditions. It’s to probably hide the fact that it is her. They’re also holding a flower that’s symbolic of young women who suffer a tragic fate. So it’s most likely her. Not the blue robe figure from the ending of Dark Road.

    • @maryscary
      @maryscary Год назад +3

      @@elsawithginathedreamdragon3952 Those were also my initial thoughts, but now I'm leaning towards it being Player. Like, why wouldn't the main character being in the cover art? And the flower they are holding could symbolize how Strelitzia only suffered that tragic fate because she was looking for Player in the abandoned house, so the Player is to a degree responsible for Strelitzia's death because if it wasn't for them, she wouldn't have searched the place and wouldn't have gotten struck down by Darkness.

    • @elsawithginathedreamdragon3952
      @elsawithginathedreamdragon3952 Год назад +2

      @@maryscary I think the main character isn’t on the cover art for the same reason why the Main Character was edited out of the opening memory cutscenes in dark road. We play as a character whose name and appearance is supposed to be unknown. Solely for the fact that we can customize them to have any name, appearance or gender that we want them to have.
      If the character appears represented in anyway, like how they originally were in the beginning of Dark Road, then that appearance would be cannon. They first appeared as the generic boy avatar with a yellow outfit. That makes us think the main character is supposed to be male…but my main character was a girl…thus, my perception of the main character I created doesn’t exist in the cannon of the games.
      Since they were cut out of the opening cutscenes, we can now project our character’s name and appearance to be what we each chose it to be.
      Also, yes the player is somewhat responsible for the “death” of Striletzia, but that has nothing to do with how they are presented in the story. Our main character is just us, interacting with people and traveling to different places. However, after Striletzia’s initial “death”, she appears again and again as a mysterious cloaked character. Is it really her? did she become a nobody? Is this just a version of her recreated from data? There’s so much mystery regarding her, that her appearance on the cover of Union Cross, (directly across from her brother!), just makes more sense. She’s one of the main characters who went missing, but is somehow repeatedly seen…So she’s on the cover of the game along with the main characters who are part of the main cast.

    Then there's the final strike. I always felt weird about that scene. It's just like "wow, no hesitation huh Xehanort?" Now it's clear that he does care he just knows "if I'm actually going to do this I need to do it quick so I don't second guess myself."

      Yeah, I would still like confirmation one day on exactly how many generations Xehanort is from Eraqus, but this definitely was not the time to limit themselves in the timeline lol.
      When I first watched the scene I was even more confused. I was like "okay... So both purifying and executing him are just thwacking him with the key?" Because Eraqus' response was the same; *Xehanort goes to thwack* "yes do that drive the darkness out" *Xehanort steps forward still attempting to thwack* "no wait not like that!" lol. I was like "Eraqus how can you even tell what Xehanort is about to do if it's the same motion both ways?" lol.

      Actually, it seems to imply _even more_ that he could have saved him but chose to end him, I think.

    • @lilli7040
      @lilli7040 Год назад +12

      I think part of the reason why he chose to end him rather than drive the darkness out was because his darkness revolved mostly around the existence of his sister. With his sister gone, even if he were to remove it, it wouldn't remove the agony and loneliness of his life without her. So he chose to kill him so he can be with her.

    • @ikkinwithattitude
      @ikkinwithattitude Год назад +29

      Honestly, it's hard to even imagine what it would look like for Baldr's darkness to be driven out /because/ it was so tightly intertwined with who he was as a person. He wasn't an innocent kid used by some demonic force to murder his classmates against his will; he went on a mass murdering rampage because he personally believed that the world was a horrible place that deserved to be destroyed.
      Not to mention, there are a bunch of narrative threads that would be really weird if Xehanort could have reasonably spared Baldr. The most obvious, of course, is that Vidar expressly sought Kingdom Hearts because he couldn't bring himself to execute Baldr, which wouldn't have made /any/ sense if blasting the darkness out of Baldr was a real option. But both Eraqus' and Xehanort's character arcs make more sense if Baldr's death is necessary, as well.
      With regards to Eraqus, it's heavily implied that his experience with Baldr is the reason why he feels like he has to execute Ven. He's wrong about that, obviously, but what makes it wrong isn't so much that Ven's continued existence wasn't a problem as that Ven is innocent (which obviously wasn't true of Baldr) and willing to sacrifice himself to end the threat without Eraqus needing to become a murderer.
      With regards to Xehanort, the point of Dark Road seems to be explaining why adult Xehanort sees the world as such a terrible place that -- like Baldr! -- he thinks it needs to be torn down. And that doesn't really work very well if Xehanort believed that Baldr could be saved but killed him anyway, because then it's not that the world's messed up so much as Xehanort's /already/ messed up.
      Overall, I'd argue that Xehanort's hesitation in the end seems more like he's having trouble accepting what a truly horrible situation he's found himself in than that he almost did the right thing but changed his mind at the last moment. He'd /like/ to spare Baldr, but not if that could very well result in a mass-murdering psycho getting turned loose on the world again.

      Xehanort may have felt that Baldr wouldn’t stop even if the Darkness incarnation was driven out of him
      That Baldr was doing this from his own free will while possessed, and wouldn’t stop attacking. He must have thought its safer to strike him down
      It actually works as it’s implied the 13 Darknesses can only be destroyed if they take physical form, and while the Darkness possess Baldr it can be defeated
      Simply drive it out of him, besides Baldr possibly attacking it’ll simply find a new vessel like Eraqus with his hatred toward darkness making him vulnerable
      Whether Xehanort knew this or not, he may have struck Baldr down to protect Eraqus

    I think the change I like most is the line about Ephemer's relation to Xehanort because it's still technically possible for 5 generations of a family to be alive at the same time. My Great Grandfather is in his 90s, and we have a picture with him, my grandparents, my parents, me and my siblings, and my nephew.
    By this logic, Xehanort's "First Mentor" would have clearly been old enough in their second life to have at least reunited with Ephemer.
    And since the time of the Lost Masters was so long ago it's seen as "The Land of Fairy Tales," it only makes sense to change line to refer to a bloodline with a vague length of time.

Why couldn't the player character's sprite fill in as a template for those sequences? I mean the sprite data must have been there and reusable and doesn't seem like the task would be that hard to accomplish but given that their team is pretty much non-existent at this point, I suppose it's better this way. What Evy Devy said, but also it just makes more sense here.
      Like before it doesn't look like there is a difference. Eraqus is like "cool do it" Xehanort walks up with a Keyblade "wait don't do it". Like it illustrates no difference between either, it doesn't even look like Xehanort is making a choice it looks like he already made the choice before walking up as no motion of his changes.
      This way it actually shows what each means. Like both DON'T involve vaguely hitting something the right way - because that's what this scene looking like in the first one. We actually see "oh okay he was going to light purify from afar and that's what Eraqus wanted, but straight up bludgeoning him is the other thing that Eraqus is telling him not to do", whereas it felt all like way too vague implication before.
      Honestly I feel like it adds impact when he turns the light off and raises the Keyblade. That's way more of an oh shit moment than it was in the first one.

      @kefkaexdeath Год назад +24

      well considering DDD, sora was "supposed" to be a vessel for darkness. but then, so were riku and roxas. idk if this update means we're supposed to forget about this specific line completely in case it was meant to refer to future events and not those of DDD, but it could simply speak to xehanort failing to accurately create or predict "destiny" in that regard, if that makes sense. xehanort seemed to believe he himself was the "child of destiny", then later believed it to be ventus, then later riku, and then sora. after ven and riku both became unavailable as the 13th vessel, xehanort tried to claim either sora or other "versions" of sora believing Sora to be the "child", and in the end managed to remember Xion's existence and picked her out at the last minute.
      this is part of the reason why i believe that IF the "child of destiny" is supposed to be either Sora or Riku, it'll actually turn out plot-wise to be BOTH of them, given the story so far and the way the two are connected. the "child" will end up being "children", something that potentially not a single character in the entire cast could ever end up predicting, something that defies all notions of "destiny". Nomura has stated repeatedly that the series has always primarily been about Sora and Riku specifically, after all. and i've heard theories that the x-blade as we've seen it was always an incomplete or incorrect version, and the True X-Blade was always Sora and Riku's Combined Keyblade this whole time. a perfect fusion of light and dark.

There was ZERO redeeming Qualitys for him, he lied to Eraqus to fool him into taking Ventus under his wing, he fooled the BBS Gang, specifically Terra and so and so forth. And in DDD there was nothing hinting at that Xehanort had different plans from what we already knew. NOT EVEN KHIII builded up to this! But in the ending, all of a sudden, it was not Xehanorts goal to simply open Kingdom Hearts out of curiosity, but in order to purge the world with Darkness, ending all life, so that true light can shine again? WHAT!? That came literally out of nowhere, and felt like a last minute add in so that we can have a more wholesome ending... but all it did was ruinin Xehanort in just that single moment entirely. @@NeroDeAngelo I can only agree that up til KH3 he was indeed portrayed as an evil guy, as he was the main antagonist. But his ambitions never change up til the end. He made his purpose clear from the start which is create a World where Light and Darkness can exist in balance, the only difference is that his actions to achieve his goal were all portrayed as evil/bad. And if it was portrayed that way it's because at the time there was a clear distinction between Light and Darkness. But now Dark Road explained that the rule for Light being good and Darkness being bad is not necessarily true and that it requires a lot of knowledge and intuition to distinguish what's good and what's bad.
      What Xehanort explained at the end of KH3 was not a mean to redeem himself, just a clarification of his true goal showing that he hadn't done everything just for the sake of evil. Xehanort broadened his horizons by travelling all over the World and reached the answers he sought.
      In the end, there's no true answer to that, everyone has their own view and answer. That's why I don't see Xehanort's portrayal up til now as a retcon, because at the end of the day it's in the eye of the others to judge if Xehanort was redeemed or not. If you think Xehanort is still a bad guy because you perceive what he's done still as evil then it's fine. Some may think like you while others may think differently.
      But keep in mind that Xehanort never tried to redeem himself, and never ask others to forgive him. He just clarified himself of what he thought was necessary.

      @@Nhoadkoko That is true. And I didn't say that Xehanort wanted to redeem himself, but that more that the developers wanted to give us a reason why he is doing what he does, and that he had "noble" ambitions, but used the "wrong means". But in order to make something like that work, you need to have to build up to it! Young-Xehanort in DDD could have been a good way to do that! Young Xehanort is VERY different from the old man Xehanort. He is more impulsive and way more "evil" in the way he talks! He seems to really enjoy what he does, and how he talks to Sora for example. But they could have hinted at why he is like that, with simple coversations, leading up to this final reveal about his true motivation in KHIII. "You think Darkness is bad, but what about Riku then? Mastered or not, he still uses Darkness willingly... so do you say that Riku is actually evil?" and/or "There is more to darkness than meets the eye..." lines like that would have hinted that there is more to Xehanorts motivations, since he seems to not see darkness as evil. But all he does talk Sora and Riku down, giving them more reasons to dispise the darkness than anything else, making it sound like Darkness is what the world has to be (Terranort/Ansem SoD once said: "All worlds begin in darkness, and all so end... the heart is no different."), it could have even be more likely that Xehanort wanted to get the worlds into darkness so they will be eternal, since time seems to not really matter in the realm of darkness.
      Xehanort wanting actual LIGHT for the world, and the worlds being led to darkness first in order to do so was pretty much out of nowhere...

In both he just walked over with a raised blade as if it were just a matter of how he hit him. This time actually shows a stark difference between using the Keyblade proper and aiming light to purify him, and FREAKING BLUDGEONING THE POSSESSED KID.
    Really that made it so much more of an OH SHIT moment when he just turns off the light and raises his Keyblade, now THAT'S a moment of someone deciding murder lol.
    And thank god they changed to not seeing the player. I wouldn't have minded as much if they used the character they show in Back Cover that's supposed to represent your character, he looked so much cooler, but they went with like the most basic doesn't-look-like-a-character default design for it. For the short stint we thought our character reincarnated into Xehanort, the green hair design in Back Cover at least looked like someone I'd believe reincarnated into Xehanort, but now that we know that's not the case that's just even way more reason to not show the default character.

I also suspect Ansem the Wise is the new reincarnation of the Player since his dialogue with Riku in DDD mirrors the dialogue btw the Player and Xehanort in Dark Road.
      All that I can gather is that the child of destiny can connect to hearts and feel their feelings and memories. May be used as a dark vessel. The connecting to hearts thing is Sora. The memories thing is Xehanort. I believe Ephemer can do both as he appears to Xehanort and Sora and has the ability to connect to people through dreams.
      The dark vessel is Ven, but by extension also Sora which resulted in Vanitas. Ven is special though ( like Lauriam, Elrena, and by extension Ephemer, Skuld, and Brain) since they time travelled and have connections to ancient and past-present times.
      I believe Xehanort harbored one of the original formless Darkness (one Luxu fought and we saw in Dark Road with Odin) that found it's way to Riku via in the form of brown robe guy and then to Riku replica. Hence why Vanitas and Riku replica have similar outfits and look like Sora and Riku... 2/6.
      And yeah idk if Xehanort and Riku are related but I think they are strongly connected because of Rikus fascination with him leaving Destiny Islands/outside worlds. His actions motivated Rikus development. But if they are related I wouldn't be surprised.

    I like these changes, especially the removal of KHUX player's avatar. We had different experiences. Having just one form to represent that would be inappropriate. I, for one, felt a bit off seeing that default avatar after having been with my own for 4 years.
    The focus on the child of destiny is probably the most important here. I believe this term will be used a lot in the Lost Master arc. MoM might groom Xehanort to be who he was and made him find this child of destiny and guided them to MoM for whatever his plan is. Why would he need someone who can connect their heart and feelings? To search for someone who's been lost and has been so removed from the plane of existence that could not be reached via conventional means? Or, like a true Master, teach them to bear the burden of negative feelings inside many hearts and be able to defeat the true darkness?

  • @mastertucker

    Anyone else find it weird that Xehanort is supposedly not the child of destiny, but he still has the powers that were credited as the defining factor of a child of destiny?
    There's only two options to answer that: That power is NOT a deciding factor of a child of destiny (which seems silly), or there are multiple children of destiny all with that power to connect with others' hearts.
    They didn't turn around and say Xehanort was wrong and he didn't have that power. He had it, they said that power is what the child of destiny can do, but he CAN still do it. So like... What??

    I always hated the Player=Xehanort thing. It underminded both characters. The Player was no longer who WE decided they were which is the entire point of that character. Without US that character just... isn't. And to say Xehanorts actions were not really his own also hurts his character too.
    Original intention or not, I MUCH perfer that our characrer reincarnated as another custom character. It keeps the US aspect there and actually means something.

    Oh nice, I was disappointed by them portraying the Player as the generic look, basically canonizing it. By obscuring it, it's back to them looking however we wanted them to look, minus the skin color though. I wonder if they're still canon male or if the gender of the old person is either nonbinary, or happened to be a male reincarnation from whatever they used to be.

      @drdca8263 Год назад +4

      Why do you list “nonbinary” and “male” as if they are two exhaustive options? I imagine the answer is “unspecified” (which I insist is a different thing from saying that a character is non-binary. It’s a watsonian vs doyalist thing. It can be that, in-universe, a certain character has a well-defined binary -inity, but the work of fiction doesn’t actually specifically what the character’s -inity is.)

  • @Kira1Lawliet
    @Kira1Lawliet Год назад +2

    I kind of don't like how they edited the UX player character out. Wouldn't it be a relatively simple thing to just insert each player's custom avatar into the scene? The two games already share the same app, it should be such a simple technical tweak to make. Doing this makes those scenes feel somewhat more awkward, and it doesn't drive home quite as hard that the blue-robed figure is the Player.

      A new fan will have these new scenes to watch whenever the hell they get to this point, and even if someone just recently caught up and watched it its not the end of the world if they don't see the revised versions, doesn't change all too much. Unless you just mean the mobile stories in general in which case yeah its a bit of a fuckfest and should be remastered into one big coherent movie or something instead of the community having to make watching it make any sense
