I remember that there was a level editor using assets & gameplay mechanics from this game. It was pretty cool because you could genuinely make full-fledged stages on par with this game.
i wish i could find all the old levels i played on the level browser. i remember a written story that i only ever played one episode of. it was told using frozen npcs and signs, and it seemed to take itself seriously. all that i remember of it was a fancy looking elevator and a frozen goonie meant to be a messenger bird belonging to the main character, maybe flying off to contact their lover. it blew me away when i was a little kid. it didn't interest me in the slightest, but i remember being really impressed.
the level designer is actually built-in from the game itself and it gets unlocked when you get 10 star coins, and you get more tiles the more star coins you get
Deadass though, the controls on it were so fucking smooth. No idea how they pulled it off so early on, but it nails the momentum-driven movement perfectly.
YESSS!!! I also used to play Super Mario 63 a ton growing up. I messed around with the game’s built in level creator so much when I was a kid and spent so much time going through the in-game list and Runnow forums finding and playing other people’s levels (especially the ones that were a set of multiple levels by one creator all listed as parts of a greater game with a story and stuff, those were the best) this game did a lot to influence my own interest in making platformer games. Unfortunately, for me at least, my experience going back to this game wasn’t all that great. The game would have random lag spikes, the collision would often be broken by these lag spikes, and Mario’s controls would often get locked and I’ll get stuck moving in one direction or action for a bit. But, while it definitely doesn’t hold up in many regards, it was still very much a bright spot in my childhood. Also, YESS STUPID MARIO BROTHERS!!!!!
This looks great. A fully redone version of 63 is just what I needed. This plus the in-development fan made sequel, Super Mario 127, are just what I needed today.
I think the reasoning for the poor font quality is because you're playing on the Ruffle emulator, that doesn't always handle graphical effects correctly. Granted, it has improved drastically over time, and is almost at the point where the whole game can be played through without flaws, but it still has a few rough edges. Ruffle does also run the game significantly better than stock Flash, and that might account for your improved framerates. Speedrunners with high-powered machines still struggle to run the stock Flash version, because of its bottlenecked framerates, which is why we tend to use the in-game-timer mod nowadays to account for the timeloss. The red coin shine glitch at 3:18 is a glitch used in 100% speedruns of the game that takes advantage of some mis-assigned coin IDs. Picking up the first yellow coin in the room is considered equivalent to unlocking the shine, and dying is all you need to trigger it. So, all you need to do to collect the shine is to collect the first yellow coin, then die. A similar glitch exists in Tick Tock Clock, where collecting a specific red coin (I don't recall which) has the same effect. Usually speedrunners will exit and re-enter the room rather than dying, though, since that's marginally faster in TTC. I'm glad you liked Redux so far. I don't think it will ever be a replacement for the original, but I hope it'll help make the game more accessible in modern times, especially to the generation of players who are only able to play on mobile devices. I think they represent the modern equivalent to kids who are only able to play browser games (although there's also a browser version of Redux, because web compatibility is important to the game's heritage).
The thing i remember mostly about SM63, was trying to find a single website that hosted an actual up-to-date version of it. Such a pain, but such a cool game.
Good on the algorithm for recommending a video rocketing me back to many happy hours spent in the Flash world :D this game was definitely one of my top 10 best flash games - so much heart and soul has been put into it, and you illustrate it very nicely. I'm so excited that a remake is being considered; something else to look forward to this year! One little note: the game actually originally didn't have any text issues; the text bubbles used to have these appropriate blocky clashy fonts that were pretty easy to read. That stock text I see in the video and the hard-to-read colors is probably due to using an emulator or playing on a website where something broke in the game files, if I had to guess, because I've run into that as well. Another note: I never knew how far that remix traveled on the internet, but what I do know is that it's one of the few tracks from the game that I spent multiple hours downloading to my iTunes and perfecting the metadata on.
God i remember playing this game on the PC of my Grandpa haha. I was a total noob back then and didnt even finish the first level. Just a year ago i found the gamr again which was pretty neat!
Super Mario Bros Wonder looks awesome, and at the same time I've been wanting Nintendo to make a 2d platformer much like this for a while. It would be cool to have special zones that call back older games. The F.L.U.D.D. Luigi could get the poltergust. Maybe some day. Or maybe someone will mod Mario wonder in the year 2055
Hey man, that Vista machine was pretty beefy for 2007 or so. Pretty much the same as we had. I'd blame your crusty old browser first, whatever it may have been.
You _can_ actually play this game with a controller if you add the exe build to Steam as a non Steam game, but you still need a mouse for menu navigation. This game is great on my Steam Deck and it's a _huge_ nostalgia trip. I recently got a CRT PC monitor and I'm excited to play Super Mario 63 on it first.
man's complaining about his specs for mario 63, mf I played that game on a Compaq Presario 1625, Windows 98 SE laptop with 32 MB of RAM, talk to me about specs I dare you
Very well explained. I remember watching my sister play this. Very cool a remaster is being made. This game was like almost triple A. Maybe double A if thats something.
development on this remake is unbelievably slow, i'd be surprised if it's done in the next 5 years. Obviously i'm not dogging on the remake, or the dev, it's like, ONE dude. It's just a bummer, that's all
and both the og and the remake will have a very large grab with speedrunners who are interested, the og is incredibly broken, and the remake is incredibly smooth and fun to speedrun
4:59 Bruh. That was like a descent mid-range computer in like 2007/8. That must've played hella smooth on that computer. All I had till 2015 was a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 CPU using integrated graphics and only 512 MB of DDR storage. Played it on low and it was rough, but overall ok.
I don't think I've ever had problems with the text not rendering in the correct font like you showed in the video. For those who don't know, the font that the game normally uses is actually very legible and uses striking dark bold outlines to help the letters pop.
The remake is so good, I wish they would finally release some sloght updates, maybe just some more levels to play while waiting for zhe whole thing. And its even made in godot too, no wonder, its probably the best engine for 2D games.
well there's the sequel thats being worked on. SUPER MARIO 127. but uhh...................................................................... it's stuck in development hell.
Ayo Bino, IK this is a very short notice submission, but d'ya think you'd be able to fit in Bup 64? It was made by Beyond the Cursed Mirror dev Rovert several years prior, it's well worth a look. Also, with the 1.0 release of B3313 being more or less fully released to the public now, will we be getting a potential third revisit to it in the near future, potentially even during the summer marathon?
I remember that there was a level editor using assets & gameplay mechanics from this game. It was pretty cool because you could genuinely make full-fledged stages on par with this game.
I remember too!! I used the shit out of it when I was like 7.
runouw (creator of the game) said that in their opinion, the level designer is the best feature of the game.
i wish i could find all the old levels i played on the level browser. i remember a written story that i only ever played one episode of. it was told using frozen npcs and signs, and it seemed to take itself seriously.

I wish i could create levels on those days but i never unlocked that ;(
You know, out of all the flash games, i am legitimately not sure if any topped this gameplay wise despite how early it was.
Deadass though, the controls on it were so fucking smooth. No idea how they pulled it off so early on, but it nails the momentum-driven movement perfectly.
mission in snowdriftland? that originally was a flash game
Mr fancypants Adventute was originally a flash game
Lol maybe epic battle fantasy
@@daedric-persona played all of them, nowhere as enjoyable and cool as super mario 63 even tho they were great

That's poetry mate
Now THIS is some RAW STUFF. This is how video gaming should feel. Great video.

iirc 127's going to have a remade version of the 63 campaign so you could also see it as a remake

It was worse when you were on school computers and almost all the sites were blocked

This channel is great, worth a sub
I know this comment is old but he was playing a much older version of sm63, the final build is a lot more polished.
I was not expecting the Stupid Mario Brothers clip, THAT brings back memories holy shit
It does not need a remake, its already perfect
I remember playing this! Avidly awaiting more from Redux
most ambitious free flash game ever?
Yoooo that throwback to 'Stupid Mario Bros'! Talk about a blast from the past

i swear the game had a different font when i played it
The remake doesn't really catch these iconic texture vibes and I like the Superstar Saga Mario Sprite
Hey man, that Vista machine was pretty beefy for 2007 or so. Pretty much the same as we had. I'd blame your crusty old browser first, whatever it may have been.
Right that thing was beyond anything I could use
There's also Super Mario 128 in active development AND it's very high quality.
127 sorry
@@cookievaandgaming 126 actually, it tripped me up too
great video. this is the type of video that prohibits me from making a similar one because you covered everything so thoroughly

I recently got a CRT PC monitor and I'm excited to play Super Mario 63 on it first.
10 days ago I looked up SM 63 to find out another game of the same developer and now I get this video shown to me. What are the odds?
Man i love this guy's voice
There is also super mario 127 which is fan sequel to super mario 63, pretty good game, worth checking out
literally the best flash game nothing tops that
Boy do I have news for you! Super Mario 127 was just announced, and it's better than you think
Nice I don't know if I should play super mario 63 it's only for browser
Good video! When Adobe flash went down, i downloaded an adobe file that could still play the game. Helped me through the pandemic.
Isn't there an software that lets you access every single flash game to ever exist?
@@AymenZeroflashpoint
The text being unreadable is a bug in Ruffle Flash Player that has since been fixed, it also has better performance now than the Adobe Flash Player.
I didint know super mario 63 was a thing until a month ago
THIS GAME IS THE GOAT
Marigoat 63
Im glad im not the only one who associates that mario remix with Stupid Mario Bros.
Dang, you're videos are good. I was hoping to do reviews on fan games like these one day.
I remember playing really old versions of this and the creator's other works on a now-defunct site named SheezyArt

I don't remember some of these issues. Maybe I have an updated version, because stuff like the textbox issue I personally never experienced.

SM63 WAS THE BEST THING EVER YES
Another remake you should check out is super mario 127!

there's also super mario 127, which is more finished and has a great level builder
This i was my shit back in the days, one of my favorites
Can't wait for redux and 1127 to come out
0:40 will somebody please remind me what this music is in the background?
This game reminds me of the better, simpler era of the Internet when there was no censorship, no woke politics, no drama and no DMCA takedowns.
there is a little glitch in the final boss where the screen gets stuck, i think it only happened to me
im surprised nintendo didnt take this down already

it's stuck in development hell.

I think tomorrow's game is gonna be DK related
