Hey Cellspex Loved your worst to best list for 2011. For 2012 do you think you could watch and talk about Tinkerbell: Secret of the Wings AKA The best Tinkerbell movie. I loved the animation, score, and has some charming moments with the characters. I’m a little surprised you’ve never talked about them once. Because I found them perfect examples of guilty pleasures. Like, they didn't really respect him earlier, but it's like they're sad to see him quit right when he was starting to actually be a hero. The line about him technically being certain to die eventually kinda feels like the lead owl realized he wrote himself into a corner with all the "this loser's totally gonna die out here" jabs, so he throws in a quick technicality. I thought it was funny. Kinda like a call-back to Rango having to quickly write himself out of a corner in the Jenkins Brothers story after forgetting to include the seventh brother.

Me and my family went to go see Rio when it came out, and when we were going home there was a giant plume of smoke off in the distance, and a lot of helicopters over head. Turns out a massive man made fire broke out where I lived (this was in Texas during one of the dryest parts of the year), and it ended up destroying most homes and ended up killing a lot of people. There’s still a giant empty space that used to be where homes were. Rio saved me a traumatizing and potentially life threatening situation, my home ended up relatively fine thankfully but we still lived incredibly close to the fire. So uh…thanks Rio!
16:17-17:04 For me, I actually really liked this movie. Especially Jesse Eisenberg’s performance as the voice of Blu. Also, I bet most people had no idea what a Spix Macaw was until they saw this movie.
I've literally been waiting for this remake since I found your channel a few years ago! So glad I was already on RUclips when the notification popped up!!! (Also, you *really* popped off with the opening sequence)
I really appreciate you going back to these earlier years, it allows me to find other good stuff on my DVD hunts at Thrift Stores and Second Hand, generally speaking I've been pretty satisfied with these over the years (even if they aren't always timely).
I really respect you acknowledging your personal biases you had and still have. I feel like a lot of people don’t evolve like that and I’m glad someone I’ve been watching since middle school is still willing to grow. Keep up the good work Cell :)
When "Le Tableau" showed up in the list, it unlocked memories I haven't accessed in over a decade. I can't remember how I found it, but I definitely saw and enjoyed it, and then completely forgot about ever having seen it.
With "Children Who Case Lost Voices From Deep Below", I find intrigue not only in it's general subversion to conventions like the modern army coming in to try and attack/steal, which has already happened before in that place, but also how it's a solid film about how loss can be both a blessing and a curse. It's a real strong conclusion that never fails to neglect the emotional core of what the film is trying to say. Also, solid soundtrack. It still is, surprisingly, one of my favorites of Shinkai in spite of it not getting the strongest reception by comparison.
One more...just one more ranking...and then we have all the years... Also, as someone whose dad watched The Amazing Race back in the day, using the theme song for Cars 2 was a great choice. And as for some of the films on here, I feel that Kung Fu Panda 2's opening narration added a level of dramatic irony in that we know exactly what happened with Shen, but Po doesn't even know who the guy is, making their confrontation in the throne room much more compelling as we understand exactly why Shen is so amused at the situation, while leaving us eager for Po to eventually learn what the peacock did to him, as he starts to realize at the end of the scene. Furthermore, the flashback intro doesn't show the specifics of Shen's involvement in regards to Po, leaving the space open for the climactic revelation in the ruins of his old village at he comes to terms with his past and his mother's sacrifice. Unlike Tangled, the story isn't hinged on a big twist of revelation that could've worked without the opening narration - the intro leaves enough gaps for the movie to naturally fill in later, encouraging the audience to stay to see the full picture as it's revealed. I wouldn't even say it's a Chosen One story, really, because the stakes are more personal that the traditional "fated to save the world" trapping of that plot, primarily revolving around the dynamic between Po & Shen. Ultimately, I'd say the film is probably better than the first one, which, while great in its unique premise and surprising thoughtfulness & artistry compared to what came before (thank god they decided to just do a straight wuxia film rather than a parody), I feel was kind of divided in that Po's story feels less interesting than the conflict between Shifu & Tai Lung, the fight between them probably being the peak of the film with how grounded it feels, only for it to become more comedic once Po returns, making it feel like a bit of an abrupt tonal intrusion. The climax of the second film is definitely my favorite, particularly in how the technique of the cannonball redirection was set up & paid off during the final standoff (THE YIN-YANG! THE YIN-YANG SYMBOL!), compared to the first where Po defeating Tai Lung just didn't have that same impact as Shifu's fight beforehand (tl;dr the sequel has the best "skadoosh" moment). Furthermore, I appreciate that Rango is probably the best film Gore Verbinski ever made, and I'm sad to see that he hasn't done anything more in the medium of animation; even Guillermo del Toro said after making Pinocchio that he plans to fully transition over to animation one day. Also, I find that the success of the movie lies in how it interacts with genre. At first, the movie starts out like a Blazing Saddles comedy Western, poking fun at the self-serious nature of Westerns with the introduction of a witty comedic character who comes to learn and manipulate the customs of the genre for his own personal success as sheriff. However, the film gradually unveils more and more of a surprising dramatic sincerity to its story that keeps it rather compelling, mostly surrounding the main character's place as a transitory being using the trappings of the genre as a mask rather than fully accepting his place within it, which was used in Blazing Saddles as an instrument to derive comedy from and criticize the prevalent unspoken attitudes of racism within the genre, while in Rango it's a character flaw that title character has to overcome and prove himself as an individual with a place in the world. Ultimately, Rango rejects his previously malleable state of being, acquiring a clear knowledge of his identity within the genre he has become involved with, and the film finishes its evolution to becoming quite a nice tribute to old spaghetti westerns of the 60s.
I haven't watched you in years, but while looking for reviews I stumbled here again . The animation edit to a banger 2010s song sent me straight back to watching literally all your tierliets while waiting for my mom to finish chores while I sat outside the Laundromat this must have been 7-8 years ago, and now im going to my second semester at community college.
thank you! i'm watching the monster in paris right now, gosh it's so damn good and i can't get over the extraordinary writing of: "Whatpart of don't make a sound did you not understand?" _confused guitar strum_ This movie is incredible thank you so much for showing it!
14:59 I really liked this one! The non diegetic music is kind of all over the place but I listen to the song they sing in the school pretty regularly, I think it’s beautiful
Ahh, your intros are so fire Cellspex 😊 18:10 I’ve never cared for Humpty either. I always thought the movies attempt at making him a sympathetic villain, doesn’t work. Still, I really liked 2011 for both animation and film in general. Rango is probably my favourite animated feature of the year. I think of Rango as a film that subverts the liar reveal; and tells a powerful story of existentialism. Also, I haven’t seen Arthur Christened since its theatrical release. But I do hope to see it this Christmas.
Two Johnny Bravo segments in the intro? I hope that's foreshadowing a full length video including the Donny Osmond episode, Little Ricky Simmons, and Bravo Dooby-Doo. EDIT: I wasn't aware of Johnny Bravo Goes to Bollywood until now. I'll have to find a copy to watch. I still hope Cellspex covers some of the more iconic episodes of the series, though.
Thank you! I’ve been hoping and have asked before that you did a best to worse of 2011. I’ve always wanted to see your review, opinion and ranking of Kung Fu Panda 2 and Rango. My favourites of 2011. You’ve made my day ❤🎉
The intro earned you a like full-stop! Very good list as well (but don't do Cinderella 3 like that, it was actually quite good considering what 2 gave us. Honestly, the movement between 1 and 3 is rather smooth).
Nice to see you include some Korean films in there. Leafie really impressed me when I watched it about a year ago. I'll also definitely need to check out Le Tableau as I actually hadn't heard of it before. For 2012 I'd highly recommend checking out Moon Man and Padak. They're not my favorite of the year, but pretty solid films that may not already be on your list as they are slightly more obscure, but definitely worth checking out.
I can and will talk about A Monster In Paris for a g e s. The best version IMO is the original french version. Nothing to knock Sean Lennon's singing, but Matthew Chedid (as -M- ) not only wrote the original music in french, but absolutely rules during it. It's honestly beautiful in the french version. Also, the not-so-small references to both The Phantom of The Opera, and -M- himself, make it genuinely super fun if you like the novelty of either element.
It's nice to find at least 1 person on RUclips who doesn't utterly despise Cars 2. I'm not saying I like it, but the hate and status as the worst Pixar movie was super overblown. It had a handful of decent scenes to me, and while Mater wasn't my favorite Pixar Sidekick, he was far from Braindead.
Well the fun thing about a list of older movies is that i actually watched a good number of these! Even have some really specific memories of some, like watching Gnomio and Juliet on the school bus one time and watching Puss in Boots on a slumber party. Now for movies i have something to comment on: The Tintin movie is one of my favorite movies of all time as a big Tintin fan (it's kinda funny that you mentioned the family lineage thing since in the comics that guy that is the descendent of the *evil* pirate is... actually a normal guy, and there were other villains); As a Brazilian i have seen Rio a good number of times and like it well enough, though i only ever watched it dubbed in portuguese, so maybe it is funnier in the dub; And i have watched Arthur christmas on christmas a couple times, and while i don't think i love it as much as you, it's still a great movie
I love how they don't just make Anxiety a villain. She's a normal emotion who means well like the others, while also showing why it's important to keep it in check.
One of my commenters just told me that I sound just like you, so I had to swing by and hear it for myself. Our voices sound so similar it's crazy lol. It's pretty cool :) - Jess
Always nice to see A Monster in Paris getting a little love. It's one of my favorite wholesome films to put on. And Phantom of the Opera fans are the only ones I ever see really acknowledge it anymore
You can't believe how relieved I am that someone remembers Leafie: A Hen Into the Wild. Definitely my personal favorite animated movie of that year (original uncensored ending, obviously).
I watched rango two days ago and it was still amazing to me. I also love the liar revel in rango, while other liar reveals follow the setup from lying to other characters to the characters finding out said lie, rango ( while still following the basic liar reveal setup) manage to also make it a basic characters setup as the main character had no identity until the end, yes it still has the usual setup and it can be predictable, but like I said before, it is the best liar reveal story to me.
Yeah sure I'll throw my hat in, because for me Tintin would have ranked a bit higher, but that's entirely because those comics got me through a LOT of bullying when I read them in the library in elementary school. Didn't even care that it was a blend of two of the comics, the characters were pitch perfect and it hit all the right notes throughout. That said, I understand why it wasn't a bigger hit, as Tintin IS a very OLD property.
This was a great list overall, but you forgot The Tragedy of Man by Marcell Jankovics, which is a Hungarian animated film that took 28 years to make. I would easily consider it as one of my favorite films of all time.
Oh man, Hoodwinked was my actual favorite movie as a kid. I heard there was a sequel coming out sometime but never ended up seeing it, guess that was a blessing.
Quick thoughts about some of the movies I saw in the opening lol I recently watched Kung Fu Panda 2 in the lead up to 4 for the first time in about a decade, and omg the scene of Po rediscovering his past and reaching inner peace is hands down one of my favorite scene in DreamWorks history. It's absolutely incredible. Winnie the Pooh is crazy underrated and it hurts. I'm biased cause I'm a huge fan of the characters, but it's funny and heartwarming and the epitome of a "feel-good movie". The knot scene is * chef's kiss *. It's really a shame the film released the weekend it did cause whether intentional or not it was set up to fail 😅. Also Rio slaps, idc what anyone says. Is that nostalgia talking from seeing it sooooo many times as a kid, maybe, but I rewatched that recently as well and I still think it's great. Also an instance of celebrity casting that works really well imo, everyone fits their roles perfectly
I think Rango gets away with The “this is the story of how he died“ because the story is literally about him going to the other side and being reborn as the person he pretended to be
Has Leafie ever been released on Blu Ray or DVD in America with the uncut ending? If so, how would one be able to tell it from a censored version, does the boxart, or any of the logos look different on the case?
Arthur Christmas is a total delight and deserves to be at the top of any Christmas movie list as well, right next to The Muppet Christmas Carol -- bravo!!
Cell, my favorite of your Worst to Best Every Animated Films is 2012. I hope that Wreck-It Ralph is still the best despite the thing that we do not speak about (if you don't know, go watch Cell's worst to best for year 2018) existing. I also hope that you are able to upload 2012's list. Also, do you think Illumination will ever learn to get actual voice actors rather than star power? What are your thoughts on The Wild Robot?
Arthur Christmas is a movie that I’ve slowly have come to like more and more each time I watch it. I’d probably say it’s my favorite animated film of 2011 as well.
Disney’s The Lion King was re-released in movie theaters backed in September 16th, 2011, along with The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride and The Lion King 1 1/2 are both in DVD and Blu-Ray in March 6, 2012, which DisneyToon Studios was completely shut down in June 28, 2018
Some movies I hope you’ll cover for the 2012 video: It’s Such a Beautiful Day The Rabbi’s Cat Padak I haven’t actually seen the latter two but I want to.
One nitpick about Arthur Christmas, if being Santa is a family business, how does Arthur find a wife and continue the line if they live in the North Pole where they are the only humans? Is it like Santa clause 2 where he goes to a regular town in England to find a wife? Where did grandsanta and broadbent and Staunton come from?
I have such a soft spot for Mars needs moms, I have never found the mocap art style of this film & polar express creepy. It’s always been so charming to me. & I always thought that ending scene of his mom sacrificing her life for him even after their argument, saved the movie for me. As a kid & now it brings me to tears. If it had a different art style & better pacing I genuinely think some people would consider it a cult classic.
In my opinion. A lot of the animated movies released in 2011 are pretty depressing. Kung fu panda 2 is violent, puss in boots can get sad at times, cars 2 can get violent and he’ll even Rio can get depressing at times… Arthur Christmas is the only movie released in the 2011 that isn’t depressing. It’s lovely and I love it.
I am a little sad that Tragedy of Man didn't make the list. It was released in 2011 and was directed by Marcell Jankovics, who has a really surreal style. Hungarian animation is never known elsewhere, so I allways try to bring it up. If it could sneak into the 2012 list, I would be over the moon.
11:30 Believe or not. Someone used that death scene as the part of a Kinktober prompt. And then used my fic the very next chapter. And the Cars discord server is so much fun and made my fic/idea even more disturbing than just turning Axlerod into Frollo/Valentino. I was just writing him in the way of him having an Incel mentality of “owning” an attractive woman that belonged to a Racecar because he knew everyone was going to die in the pits. “Saving” her from being blown up in the pits with the rest of the Radiator Springs crew. That threatening the lives of the three remaining cars from Radiators Springs (Sheriff, Sarge, and Lizzie) would lead her to be more agreeable and less combative to his wants. The discord server turned Axlerod being a eugenist/fascinated (other f word) for Porsches, a broomer (the internet’s favorite word to accuse LGBT+ people), unaliving oneself, and Flowers in the Attic-ing (if you know what that is you know). Granted, it’s all meant to be f-ed up but still… I don’t touch that stuff. I’m using a lot of coded words because I feel like RUclips will delete the comment.
6. Puss in Boots (B) 5. Kung Fu Panda 2 (B+) 4. Arthur Christmas (B+) 3. Rio (A-) 2. The Adventures of Tintin (A-) 1. Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension (A+) Will add to the list once I see more.
11:34 RIP RvB… but I love the choice of music for the movie about Romeo and Juliette but they’re inexplicably gnomes and just entirely red and blue factions.
Its films like "tatsumi" that make me yearn for something like that about American comic artists in particular Jack "the King" Kirby. I want a fil. about him that tries to emulate his style. Uses his krackle effects, bold colours hard shadows, big expressive gestures and collage techniques to create something truly unique and beautiful
i grew up watching this movie, so i obviously am wearing a two inch thick rose-tinted glasses, but i still like the way Mars Needs Moms looks! Sure it's uncanny, but I've always thought it fit the vibes really well. I know I am objectively wrong, but I enjoy the movie, which is what I always love about any artform, is that joy can still be found even from "bad" art. Also I think Rio is where my undying love for Eisenberg started
Though it’s a short film, my favorite piece of animation that year is easily The Backwater Gospel. It’s an absolutely amazing and disturbing short film with a really cool art style and great voice work
Oh sweet. The 2011 ranking. I see a few of these but don't remember them. However I heard about them various times over the years and now we await for the 2012 and I'm hopeing to see It's Such A Beautiful Day on there. Cuz it's such an amazing movie
In defense of Poppy Hill I think it has an incredibly fun and comforting soundtrack. Whoever played the accordion for that movie did not need to go that hard.

@@mamrelaadi4066 well said! Tgey should do a sequel, it takes just way too long already. Knowing what they achieved back in the day, the sequel will be OUT OF THIS WORLD!! visuals will be Mind Blowing
26:25 -- Nope! It's not JUST "Pooh's Grand Adventure". The full title is "Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin". In some countries, it was retitled "Winnie the Pooh's Most Grand Adventure".
I actually want to see a best of 2006. There were A LOT of animated movies in 2006.
Agreed. I would love to see her rank the animated films of 2006. Also, 10 years later, 2016 also had a lot of animated films.
Can't believe it's 2012 already 😭😢2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣2️⃣🎆🎉
Bruh 😭
24:55 props for using Trudbol's rendition here (:
Hell yeah, thank you so much, i love this series and I especailly respect, how consistent the quality of the videos is. Great work their.
5:49 Hey, I like some of the Disney direct to DVD sequels, and the songs in Mulan 2 are certified hood classic bangers.
I think with Leafie you should have input, "A Mother's Love" by Jim Brickmann, as the intro for that movie.
darn it, you're right
@@CellSpexwho does the cover for Rolling in the Deep?
thank you! i'm watching the monster in paris right now, gosh it's so damn good and i can't get over the extraordinary writing of:
"Whatpart of don't make a sound did you not understand?"
_confused guitar strum_
This movie is incredible thank you so much for showing it!
14:59 I really liked this one! The non diegetic music is kind of all over the place but I listen to the song they sing in the school pretty regularly, I think it’s beautiful
Ahh, your intros are so fire Cellspex 😊
18:10 I’ve never cared for Humpty either.
Thank you for always cluing me in on lesser known film gems!
omg I always mix up Arthur Christmas with Prep and Landing, glad it's not just me. Great ranking video!
Seriously, the opening montages are AMAZINGLY edited.
So here for this series
Two Johnny Bravo segments in the intro? I hope that's foreshadowing a full length video including the Donny Osmond episode, Little Ricky Simmons, and Bravo Dooby-Doo.
EDIT: I wasn't aware of Johnny Bravo Goes to Bollywood until now. I'll have to find a copy to watch. I still hope Cellspex covers some of the more iconic episodes of the series, though.
Been a while 2011. Nice to return to you.
I'm very glad you talked about Tatsumi. I saw it for a history of animation course and it was incredibly inspiring
Now for movies i have something to comment on: The Tintin movie is one of my favorite movies of all time as a big Tintin fan (it's kinda funny that you mentioned the family lineage thing since in the comics that guy that is the descendent of the *evil* pirate is... actually a normal guy, and there were other villains);
As a Brazilian i have seen Rio a good number of times and like it well enough, though i only ever watched it dubbed in portuguese, so maybe it is funnier in the dub;
And i have watched Arthur christmas on christmas a couple times, and while i don't think i love it as much as you, it's still a great movie
I love how they don't just make Anxiety a villain. She's a normal emotion who means well like the others, while also showing why it's important to keep it in check.
Wrong video buddy
It’s so great you finally remade this! Now we just have 2012 left.
Thanks for uploading. I loved watching the original as a kid, and it really helped my vocabulary.
I'm really happy that you covered Tintin. I find it to be super under-rated and its always been a personal favourite of mine ❤
19:15-19:26 That is exactly what they were going for in the Johnny Bravo movie
omg I've been wondering about this for years!! because I was curious of your opinions on Rango!
I remember seeing ads for A Monster in Paris a lot when i was a kid. Took me back to the times when people still remembered that film existed
You brought me back to my childhood with a lot of these.
Also, you have to eventually get to 2012 so I can hear you talk about Rise of the Guardians!
4:49 Musical Hell is wrong for literally just having it be in her court
I feel the same way.
Musical Hell is wrong about quite a lot of things these days...
My family watched Arthur Christmas every Christmas Eve. It’s full of amazing memories and will probably always be my favourite movie because of it ❤
This was a great list overall, but you forgot The Tragedy of Man by Marcell Jankovics, which is a Hungarian animated film that took 28 years to make. I would easily consider it as one of my favorite films of all time.
Oh man, Hoodwinked was my actual favorite movie as a kid. I heard there was a sequel coming out sometime but never ended up seeing it, guess that was a blessing.
Quick thoughts about some of the movies I saw in the opening lol
I recently watched Kung Fu Panda 2 in the lead up to 4 for the first time in about a decade, and omg the scene of Po rediscovering his past and reaching inner peace is hands down one of my favorite scene in DreamWorks history.
Also an instance of celebrity casting that works really well imo, everyone fits their roles perfectly
this is really important Spex but i used the hoodwinked too section’s background music in a college project
2011 was certainly a wild time to be a theatrical animation fan.
oooh, interesting year to choose to rank the films of. excited to see what this entails.
Some movies I hope you’ll cover for the 2012 video:
It’s Such a Beautiful Day
The Rabbi’s Cat
Padak
I haven’t actually seen the latter two but I want to.
Finally someone taking about La Tableau/Painting omg it’s one of my favorite movies❤️
11:30
Believe or not.
6. Puss in Boots (B)
5. Kung Fu Panda 2 (B+)
4. Arthur Christmas (B+)
3. Rio (A-)
2. The Adventures of Tintin (A-)
1. Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension (A+)
Will add to the list once I see more.
I hope you can do a 2000s animated movies ranking by year.
Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin mentioned, you love to see it
i grew up watching this movie, so i obviously am wearing a two inch thick rose-tinted glasses, but i still like the way Mars Needs Moms looks! Sure it's uncanny, but I've always thought it fit the vibes really well. I know I am objectively wrong, but I enjoy the movie, which is what I always love about any artform, is that joy can still be found even from "bad" art. Also I think Rio is where my undying love for Eisenberg started
i was literally thinking yesterday about how i'd love to see a 2011 animated film ranking, what are the odds.
Just randomly saw it and clicked it great video you got another subscriber
Im so glad you included TINTIN
you did tintin dirty, that movie has some of the best action setpieces ever put to animation
Though it’s a short film, my favorite piece of animation that year is easily The Backwater Gospel. It’s an absolutely amazing and disturbing short film with a really cool art style and great voice work
Big fan of the Tintin comics, wouldn’t personally call the movie a “clumsy adaptation” at all! I think it’s great!
I LOVE Le Tableau! It's so underrated, this is a very correct video, thanks for spreading the word lol
It's so good!
Thank you for this video!!!
Oh sweet. The 2011 ranking. I see a few of these but don't remember them. However I heard about them various times over the years and now we await for the 2012 and I'm hopeing to see It's Such A Beautiful Day on there. Cuz it's such an amazing movie
Will you be doing a list of 2012 films? I don't remember you doing one of those.
THANK YOU!!! Pooh's Grand Adventure is my all-time favorite, and I was so disappointed how much the 2011 Pooh movie was just "We have PGA at home."
In defense of Poppy Hill I think it has an incredibly fun and comforting soundtrack. Whoever played the accordion for that movie did not need to go that hard.
Whenever I see critiques on Hoodwinked, I always assumed people were criticising the original. I had no idea they made a sequel, and I hated it.
Mars Needs Moms was so uncanny to me as a kid I refused to watch it because it scared me, it was that uncanny to look at
