I was a career railroader. It's sad these classics are rotting away. But it cost absolute fortunes to restore these things, most restorations are done by volunteers who must machine complely new parts and give many hundreds of hours. They never recoup the money. When they put these things for train shows and special pulls and rides people bitch that it cost $12 to ride on one. Seen it in person. I was a conductor... There's no incentive to restore these
Not unless the thing is beyond salvage, much of those loose boilers are spares! Perfect to mend and install in old engines for boiler change. Like Stepney!
Not abandoned. It’s a facility for the Tanfield railway, a restored colliery line. The locomotive at 1:52 is a 3ft 6 inch gauge locomotive built in 1951 for Tasmania. All of these locos are waiting for restoration, so don’t worry about them. On the other hand, be careful, you are breaking onto private property.
Ha I’ve broken into private property and a guy said it was his house and it was boarded up I think he was in drugs because that can’t be his house it been there since I was 4 years old and now I’m 14 and thinks that his house it soo old it abandoned by the way it had no private property signs or keep out signs
Kalani Garnica there was, however they’re probably such idiots that they couldn’t read a sign. There were also security cameras as well as the fact that the site is so large that the cost of full fencing around it would not be economical
Darkmere Let me explain. Most of these locomotives are too small to be of practical use on a preserved heritage railway like the Tanfield line. So they haven’t restored them yet, since they prioritise their more powerful locomotives which makes them profit from hauling passenger trains. A lot of the locomotives in this yard are waiting for restoration. Others are being used as a source of spare parts to keep other ones operating. They aren’t just abandoned.
legoscout roblox Severn Valley only has one industrial locomotive in operation at the moment - and it’s still much larger than anything in this yard. They are a large heritage line which mostly relies on large locos, so they wouldn’t buy and restore smaller locos like these ones because it wouldn’t be profitable. Pontypool does indeed use smaller locos, as it’s a preserved mining railway, which would’ve originally used locomotives like these ones, but the Pontypool line already has enough locomotives, and if they did want more, definitely wouldn’t buy one in as bad a condition as the ones in this yard.
Hello, that is Tanfield railway, an active heritage railway based in north east england and the "Abandoned trains" you are seeing are locos in storage that have been saved and are awaiting restoration, if you had kept walking for another 2 minutes you would been met with the loco and carriage sheds you are trespassing
Well I don't think anyone would be mad at him. He thought it was just open and has raised awareness. The fact there were boilers on flatbeds makes sense knowing it is a storage yard. Any clue what build the little 0-4-0 in the thumbnail is? One looks like a Hudswell but the one with no tanks is much less identifiable.
@@AaronR264 Fair, I just meant you could forgive this instance. Yes it is trespassing I agree, but the only thing missing from you yard here would be at most some rust that got on their hand. Not as bad as taking parts off, Yeah they need permission but had not a clue what it really was. By the way what make is the Tank Engine without tanks or cab in the thumbnail? I've not seen a engine with the steps on the Smokebox. Also glad these beauties will have a run one day, wish I could volunteer but I am across the pond..
Just a future note. They aren't steam trains, they are steam locomotives. A Train is the rolling stock pulled by a locomotive. It's a common misconception. Also, am I the only one who is saddened that no heritage group couldn't restore the loco's in time, they seem to far down the path to be restored to running order😭😭😭😭😭😭
The Tanfield Railway has been there for nearly 300 hundred years. A lot of stuff there has been restored, some is awaiting restoration - the restored items are mainly kept indoors. You have to collect items when they are available, you cant restore one, then look for another! As far as possible, items are conserved until they can be restored, others are used as a source of parts. However, tarpaulin sheets cost money and don't last forever and you are up against the weather, thieves and vandals etc. One time we visited there, they had just had to replace about 50 carriage windows on their running stock due to children smashing them with stones. There is always the possibility that you could get involved with such a group and help restore the items, or donate money to the society if you are not able to do so. I restore vintage carriages and wagons at another railway with a similar amount of stored stock so am very familiar with the problems such as a group acquiring an item but not raising any money to restore it and then disappearing into the ether.
It's so sad to see such beautiful locomotives left there to rot. These are such important pieces of history. But they were just left there to rot away 😔
Here because my son is obsessed with steam locomotives. But I even can't help but feel sad about it. Nobody has the ability to manufacture one of these today. They were such a complex piece of machinery. It's amazing they can find anyone to run the ones in heritage rail lines. They were all so uniquely different from each manufacturer. So many only had such small numbers made, and not to preserve a single one is a tragedy.
This is so cool! Can't believe how many locos have been left to rot away. Don't understand why people have disliked this. Really great video keep it up!
I agree with one slight adjustment they don't belong in a museum as such they belong on a working railway doing what there meant for these are working machines and look best at work not sitting on static display. The beauty of steam locomotives is way more then what they look like it's also there sounds smells and difference in how they work each is unique

These things may look terrible and beyond repair, but don't judge a book by it's covers, some of these can be restored, can be both operation and Cosmetically, look at old photos of former locomotives at Barry Scrapyard, most to almost all of the ones that were saved were restored from rusting wrecks to living, breathing masterpieces

Do you have any idea how much even a rotting engine is worth? There is no WAY this stuff is abandoned. Especially as the surrounding buildings and track are well maintained. This looks like a preservation storage yard, with trains and stock waiting for the needed time, man power and funds to repair it. If it breaks your heart, help out and volonteer.
