    I used to sing identical to Kurt... When I'd play and sing Nirvana songs, with my brother playing the drums, people would freak the hell out and say "you sound like Kurt has taken possession of you." And screwed it all up while continuing to sing with a sore throat when becoming ill... We were going to do a tribute to Nirvana gig. I regret to this day that I didn't stop singing his songs during that time.

      @@letsgobroncos4143 Thanks bro! It does... I screwed up my voice in '96. In 2002 my brother and I were going to do the tribute but I was struggling! I sounded like shit! The music was there but my voice wasn't. I had his guitar sound to a T, but no longer in my voice. But I'm happy to say, that I was recently asked to be the lead singer for a local band. Our first gig on May 11th will include Man In The Box by AIC! I'm getting my voice back singing that. I played around the other day with Drain You, and Lithium! I'm getting it back! Not as killer as it was, but close enough. I'll be doing some Nirvana in the next upcoming gigs! When I post some vids, I'll keep you in mind and tag you here. Thanks again man!

    Kirt’s voice cuts through the mix so well. His distortion was so articulated like he had a fuzz pedal for his voice. Personally, I think he was influenced by Lennon.

    Hey Patrick, greetings from Singapore. I'm 21 this year who has a really big passion for rock and metal singing, I really admire the technicality behind it and that's how I've decided to learn it. I came across your channel after watching sooo many videos on how to sing rock, do distortion, rasp etc but none of them are detailed enough for a beginner like me(Most of them just beat around the bush and end up promoting their singing courses). I can sing clean but when it comes to adding distortion, I feel like I'm using mostly throat and it dries out my vocal chords. Hopefully you can give a detailed tutorial on how to do all this because I have to say, I really love your voice and how you demonstrate the different types of techniques! That being said, I will continue browsing through your channel and see what else can I pick up from you. Cheers!

    • @patrickobrien85
      @patrickobrien85  5 лет назад +7

      Ryan for sure man! Screaming is one of those things that can take a long time to learn. What I would say though is that you try to learn the vocal fry scream first. The main tip that I would give you is to pull way back on the volume. What your trying to develop initially is just the rasp, then you can start singing and yelling a bit through it.

    I think you’re on to something here. My question: any idea how to add more volume? Mine sounds good, but just not loud enough to stay in front of my band

    • @patrickobrien85
      @patrickobrien85  5 лет назад +20

      BoonFire Volume should never be the goal for creating the sound. It’s one of the biggest beginner mistakes that I see, the top one being where the student try’s to imitate his favorite singer and never develops a natural tone.
      There’s a couple of things you can do.
      1. Thin the chords out more.
      Almost all the greatest rock singers sing though a very small voice. This gives them more control and allows for them to bridge into the upper register. This sound is also what cuts through the band. There is a certain element of volume that can add some aggression to the sound, but it usually will hinder the control of the voice.
      Now when I say thin out the chords more, I mean a literally Axl Rose physical thin through the entire range of your voice.
      This is kinda like taking a garden hose and putting your thumb on the end to shoot it further.
      Now to create this sound which is known as the pharyngeal voice, you have to pull back on volume a bit. Too much volume will cause the chords to press and it will sound very strained.
      Go and listen to the classics: Kurt Cobain, Fredy Mercury, Robert Plant, Rob Halford, Sebastian Bach, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, John Fogerty, and so many others are all singing through this small voice.
      The real secret to it is to not resonate out but rather up into the hard or soft pallet.
      Honestly though man, if you really want to learn it, go buy and read The Voice Of The Mind. \m/

    I can scream like Kurt and it just comes naturally. I don’t practice or anything. It’s not great tequniqe, but it just comes naturally where multiple octave sounds just come out but to the sense where I can somewhat control the octaves that are released. It’s really odd I just sorta stumbled upon it when practicing songs such as “Spank Thru” and the alt. version of “Big Cheese”

      A lot of the 80s Brit hardcore punk is rhaspy singing and screaming... The best sounding bands of this particular style have the rhaspiest voices ... So I've done a few covers and the only time I actually enjoyed the vocals was the most destructive. 3 rd song in a row and you start tasting blood and your voice is gone for a day. It sucks.
      Kurt was told by his doctor, while getting his stomach looked at, that he must stop singing in a band immediately or lose his voice permanently. He made jokes about this with the band (he tried quitting the band a few times) and continued performing. :/

    hey patrick if you read this why is it that when i try and do vocal fry it starts turning into belting? the best way i can describe my attempts at vocal fry screaming end up sounding similar to how bob noxious sounds in big cannons. its a much more gravelly harsh sound with alot of midrange. as well i can do pretty well with things sung randy blythe or dave grohl where my more gravelly voice sits a bit better than in more raspyish songs. But thats because through trying to learn vocal fry i just hapened apon belting. I can get vocal fry to happen when i whisper but when i try to apply it at volume it either chokes out and my throat closes too much and i and it starts to tickle from tension or i get annoyed and find a way around it usually with belting XD.

    Ahahaha no one do this long term, unless you WANT to permanently fry your vocal chords. I know from experience. (Perma-fried my own voice.) It sounds romantic to have a permanently raspy voice, but when you are fully unable hit certain notes, you'll be disappointed.
    Formally learn the process of using VOCAL COMPRESSION. Practice safely, and properly, to avoid permanent vocal chord damage.
    Side note to content creator:
    Sorry bro, you just didn't go over the warmup basics in this particular vid. If people jump directly in to fry screaming, they might unintentionally damage themselves. You aren't wrong here, you just missed a couple steps. Thank you for the free knowledge and content though!

    • @patrickobrien85
      @patrickobrien85  5 лет назад +7

      I know nothing Yeah no... You’re dead wrong on that. Did Ronnie James Dio ruin his voice? How about Tim Ripper Owens? Obviously Kurt didn’t live long enough although I’m sure he would’ve had problems from drug use and so on.
      If you want to talk about the greatness of the so called compression technique, which is more than likely going to cause you to strain and bow your vocal chords leaving you with a terrible and heavy sound, then go ahead.
      Just make sure that you are cleaning off your chords after you’re done singing with lip bubbles or tongue trills.
      I mean shit. Show me you’re technique I’ll let you know what else is going wrong.
