Huh. The character Denzel plays who is based on Marcus Opellius Macrinus sure doesn't look like Denzel in the bust of him. Hmmmm. How shocking.

As of now, 136K likes vs 294K dislikes. Some disliked due to music, others because they feel Gladiator didn't need a sequel, and still others (I'd guess the majority) because of the casting: specifically, a South American cast as a Spaniard and an American cast as an Algerian, who was an Emperor no less and never a lanista. The world is open now. There's no excuse for casting a South American as a Spaniard. And there's no excuse for Washington being cast in his role other than DEI. I'm for DEI, btw, in modern movies reflecting the modern world, but it doesn't belong in historical movies, not even historical fiction, if it wasn't there to begin with. To Hollywood, I say respect the history of other countries, the time and place of the production. If Hollywood can't, it should be left alone. Much of the world, after all, does not subscribe to the rather limited and stringent American view on ethnicity.

Note: when I wrote I'm for DEI, I meant DEI can work in a diverse and modern setting, not that I'm for the injection of DEI where it doesn't belong. There are still places that aren't diverse. And a place can be anything: continent, country, city, town, etc. Stay true to the setting is what I'm saying. :)

I am reserving judgement - I think they tried to push a modernised trailer and it has not landed well at all. I mean rap music? This is not a Guy Richie gangster film. I say the trailer makers got it wrong here
Absolutely agree! The movie may indeed be fine but if we weren't making RUclips videos we would have little interest in seeing this opening weekend!
