- We took my totally stock (+ ball bearings) Tamiya Super Clodbuster Gray Edition Monster Truck to the park for a speed test. As it was certainly going to be slow, we thought it would be a good idea to try it on a NiMh battery and then on a 2S LiPo to see if there was a difference. What do you think?

🤣🤪 haha I gotta agree with that one mate! It had more punch 👊 but no more on the speed meter. The meter doesn't register fractions of a mph so it could actually have been 0.9 mph faster!! 😳
It's not about the speed, it's the bounce and steering off road that makes these fun. But they look so good from the era of monster trucks they come from. They do good wheelies both ways scraping the bumpers 🙂

Well the punch certainly seemed to increase with the different packs but still capped out at the same speed! They are not speed demons but they are truly wonderful to watch bumble and bounce all over while running them! It looked fantastic going 10mph for sure! Take care Mark!

This is a brilliant video and shows just how much fun you can have with RC's regardless of speed and power. The Clod looked wonderful tearing along the path and I enjoyed this video very much Mark.

Hi Mark (and Rob)! Yeah, you need some decimals or kph to measure the difference if the NiMH is freshly charged. But it did seem to have some more punch and acceleration on the LiPo. That’s pretty much the only difference I can feel when switching. Well, apart from the fact that the LiPo keeps the voltage up much much better in the long run. Anyways. Agree to most however, a Lipo also has more voltage, (unless a cell was down on a charge). Should have been 1 to 3 mph (1.6 to 4.8kph) faster.

Yeah, it's no speed machine, it's in those last clips it really shines, or out in Dom's sand pit, wheelie'ing and jumping around! Or if you dare to, try line up all your road cars and drive the Clod Buster over them, I bet that would make for a special video, Mark!

I think the retrition is in the gear ratio and motors. The LiPo will give a bit more kick, but mAh only effects run time. You need to look at the C rating discharge rate also the ESC will only run at a certain Amp load rating. Get the Hobbywing 840 I think it is.
Thanks Simon! Yeah it's a minefield really when it comes to batteries, ESCs and motors! The nimh was hot off the charger and probably at over 8v, but this only lasts a very short while. The lipo was a 50c so pretty good. I have the Hobbywing dual ESC fitted, it's very good, too! All just a bit of fun though really mate! All the best 👍

I put a 5200 2s. In mine top speed stock is 15 mph. Its the black edition. They are so much fun just stock. Great video.

Good old clod Buster doing its thang there! It’s such a heavy lump the lipo just doesn’t seem to offer any more speed , initial punch acceleration seemed better though. Top stuff Mark, take care ;)

Thanks, dude! Same here, but the NiMh was hot off the charger and usually go well for the first minute and tail off quickly. I agree about more possible damage with faster motors though, I promise not to go too crazy! Cheers! 😎👌👍
Hiya mate. I did think you might get an extra mph out of the lipo. It's a shame that the GPS meter doesn't do fractions of mph because it might have gone from 10.0mph to 10.8mph or something like that. Looks much quicker and more fun off road. Be good to squeeze a bit more speed out of it but still good as it is. Great vid mate. Hope you are enjoying the sunshine 😁☀️
Hi Pete, yeah I thought exactly the same about the LiPo. But a NiMh just off the charger can peak at 9v for a very short while so I think that was it. Agree about the decimals not showing on the meter, too. It sure feels faster than 10 on the rough and it's fun enough anyway. Don't want to break that lovely special edition body so I might leave well alone! Loving the sun, mate, all the best to you! 😎👌👍

A whopping 10mph the fastest it may not be the fastest but it’s a very fun monster truck to drive gotta love the clods and your videos mark, I own 5 of them including the vintage! 👍🏼

Fun test: I used a 3s in a stock superclod, with the stock Tamiya Clod esc that was in the box.. It didn't blow up, or fall apart, and was QUITE a bit faster.... Something to consider, imho. The Hobbywing esc with 2 motor leads is actually made for 2- to 3s, and the 27-turns Mabu's do not even get mad hot.

@@MarkBryanRC On a side-note: with two 23t Ruddogs, the Tamiya esc shut down. So, 40 Euro's later a Hobbywing went in sooo.. I can't check the speed with the 27t mabu's anymore. I recently stuck 2 Robitronic 27t modifieds in the Clod. They're a bit faster on 2s ( not blistering, think 12 to15 mph) than the silver cans on 3s. I the "days of yore" the go to motors were Orion 19t doubles @ 0 degrees with a Novak Rooster ESC. Nowadays the better brushed motors ( there are still some quality ones) are much more efficient, and deliver more power, so I'd dare say that two 21t double's would do just as well. You'd want the double-winds, because they deliver power more smoothly, making the Clod more manageable, less "jolty" ( if that's even a word.. 😋 )

I would think that the motor is reaching its max rpm each time so the top
speed cannot be increased no matter what energy you give it. Great video and it’s plenty fast enough off road 👍

10mph it is! You should try the motors I run, The RC4WD 20T crawler motors they are very inexpensive and I believe mine now run 15 to 16mph with them.

The Lippo certainly delivered the power quicker, despite top end being equal.
But hey, let's face it..... these things were not designed for tarmac speed runs, they come alive off road where 10 mph is perfectly sufficient.
Wouldn't mind betting mine won't clear 7mph,it's heavier than Taylor with that metal chassis..... but don't quote me on that mate! 😉 😂

I was always very much against lippo as well, for the same reason..... but have started to 'dabble' a bit recently!
They certainly seem to have brought some of my models to life.... especially the monster beetle which was always lacking in speed.
But, I'm exercising extreme caution.... Proper storage/charging bags, in a metal tin, good quality smart balance charger with cell condition /discharge /storage charge etc.
After all, I think Pete wylie's video really hit home with us all a few years back eh? 🔥
Unfortunately, my vintage clod will not be doing any speed runs.... but hopefully putting out a little video later this week having a closer look at it, and a little raz about in the garden.... 😉

That was strangely satisfying dude. I have a pair of HPI 15t Firebolts in mine, I think that's the lowest turn motor with no timing, to run backwards. They're cheap as well! 😁

A lipo generally won't give you much more top end, but it does give you more of everything else.

Unless you go for 3s and more, which probably not fit the clod, the 0.2v on rather modest motors, can not provide additional mph.
Im guessing the acceleration you feel is also maybe due to lower weight with lipo?
I fully agree with the safety advantage of nimh.

10mph to 10mph??? Something don't seem right mate... It should have been faster (1 to 3 mph) with the Lipo. Voltage = more RPM, rpm = faster mph. Great video brother.... Now I have to buy an antique nimh (by todays standards) battery pack and try a speed test in my Clod, I already did one with a Lipo.
Hi mate - yeah I know! But i have measured a NiMh hot off the charger and they sometines read 9v. This only lasts for about 45 seconds of use but it's enough to register a fast speed before it drops off to 7v. You know I watched your speed test, mate! ATB, brother Bob! 🤗👌👍

Been running 3 cell lipos in mine which appears to give it more gas but not sure how much faster it goes.
It's a 2S lipo pal! Not sure if my ESC can handle 3S! I bet the 3S does wake it up a little though! 😅👊👍

Mine has the 21t Holmes hobbies motors and bearings, Grayson’s has tge stock silver cans and bushings, they both have the same top speed. Mine gets there faster, his has more torque and wheelies.. I think 10-11pm h is the fastest these beasts will go lol
