That got me emotional also, heartfelt story ,The Frog was the first rc car i ever saw at age 12 in 1984 , i wanted it so bad but couldn't afford it , got a Hornet instead after saving my money for a year and ended up painting pink and white in honour of the Frog 😂 .
As the owner of a modified Clod, I have to agree with your assessment completely. I shudder to think about how much I have in mine, but it's worth every penny for the smiles I get every time I take it out and enjoy it.
hello Mike! Could you please share what are some of the most important upgrades to a Clod? I am a new Clod owner! I usually trail drive my Tamiya monsters, so definitely not racing them. :) Thank you very much!
@@oliboli It all depends on how much you want to spend and whether or not you're wanting to keep your chassis stock (plastic) or if you're willing to upgrade it to one of the available carbon fiber or aluminum models. Once you've made that decision, it's time to decide what you want to use to power it with. Power can be supplied by brushed or brushless motors and an appropriate speed control (or two). Then you need a servo or two for steering to go along with that, depending on whether or not you want to keep four-wheel steering. And you'll probably want to upgrade your shocks as well, and those should be chosen to match your chassis and desired ride height and terrain. Then you may want to upgrade your wheels and tires also. Now that mine is pretty much done, it's large enough that it almost doesn't fit on the outside unit for my home A/C, if that gives you some idea of just how much upgrading has been done. I need to take some measurements, but it's definitely no little toy anymore. I had to have shelves custom-made to hold it in my office because it wouldn't fit on a shelf that was large enough for my Wraith to sit on. Lol! I hope that helps a bit.
@@mikemiller9023 Ohh wow! :O that is way more complex that I'd thought first! Soo, I would stick to the original chassis for now. I already have a Quicrun880 from Hobbywing, but silver cans are just fine for what I use it for. The steering and suspension I would definitely swap to something better, I already own a few Savöx servos. I usually do trail walks with friends where I take my monster trucks. So, suspension and stability would be key. Would that require a change to a custom chassis? Also, I am running my trucks on 2s lipos. Oh, and what brands/manufacturers are we looking at when it comes to modifications? Anyway, thank you very much for the quick response! :)
@@oliboli It can definitely get complicated quickly, unfortunately. But it's all a matter of how much you want to spend, and what you want to see performance-wise out of it. I'd go with the high-torque Savox servos for steering, and stick with low-turn silver can motors with your Hobbywing 880. That should be fine to get it moving. The only problem with the stock chassis is that it's such a short wheelbase and that makes it a bit wobbly. If you can deal with that, stick with it for now and just upgrade your shocks to larger piston oil-filled unit and you should be fine for the time being. When it comes to upgrading, there are a few manufacturers and most of them aren't too bad. You can also make a lot of things yourself, if you're handy enough and use strong enough materials. Check out some of the Clodbuster groups on Facebook to get some suggestions and links to current chassis that people are running. I've only got my one Clod, but there are others out there who have other chassis than just mine, and they might have more informed opinions than I do on what chassis is best.
@@mikemiller9023 Well, thank you very much for all the valuable information! I definitely would not want to shovel the $ into it. Just would like to make it a little bit better. :) I am to consider all your advices! Already found a huge facebook group around this :) So, again, thank you very much!
4:31 I had a 1/10 scale and a 1/12 scale Midnight Pumpkin in metallica and I would love to find a 1/10 scale again. I have scoured for years. Can find 1/12 seemingly everywhere. Funnest truck ever!!!!! My second used to be a massive USA-1 and my third choice was Super Clod Buster (never had one). I have never seen the USA-1 truck again since the late 80’s.
Thanks for the history! I was born in 84 and didn't know when these all came out. I was playing with the ready to run RadioShack cars when I got lucky on my birthday or Christmas.
Shout out to my 22 year old King Blackfoot 😎 What a truck! That ORV chassis was basically the ultimate version, and it still performs very well. Put some bearings, oil dampers on and a Sport Tuned motor. It feels like something totally different now😅 Performance is to a whole new level😁👍🏻 Love from South Africa
Awesome Video. Took me back to when I was a kid. I got a Blackfoot in 1987. I remember the Clod Buster when they came out. I was like..WTH. Two motors, and 8 shocks. And it seemed sooooooo expensive to me back then as a 8th grader. Thanks for taking me back to when I was a kid. Cheers from Oregon, USA
I had a Monster Beetle when I was a kid. Was a great kit. I still remember my dad and I putting it together. The Beetle was tough as nails and really fast at that time. I also remember having to buy a remote and receiver with a different “crystal” so it ran on a different frequency from all my friends. Thank god for 2.4GHz that we have now.
The crystals for 27mhz were colour coded and numbered. If you wanted to never need to change crystals you bought 40mhz gear which hardly anyone else had for cars. I had a 27mhz and a 40mhz set.
As a owner of 20+ Clodbusters the Clodbuster is definitely my favorite. I love the axles under the Juggernaut 1&2, TXT 1&2 and the Agrios trucks. Those axles reminds me of the axles of the stage 1 and 2 monster trucks.
I have a TXT-1 and recently upgraded the electronics to a single 3660 2650kv brushless set up on 2s or 3s. When I built it 15 years ago I added some aluminum upgrades from New Era and RC4WD. These upgrades plus using Traxxas E-Revo shafts for the drive shafts has made for a crazy reliable truck. The E-Revo shafts are usually the weak link, which is great as they are pretty cheap to get the individual parts to repair the shaft and they are much easier to source than the Tamiya parts. And they are much easier to swap out.
monster beetle!! got me into tamiya at age of 12, 34 years ago.... 🥰 got the rere also, the orinal was run into pieces, all wheels, body was broke, must have drivin it daily for 3 years easy, got replaced with a terrible fire dragon
Wow. Talk about blast from the past. I bought a Clod when I was a little kid around ‘88 or ‘89 from “Dans Crafts and Things” in Rochester NY. Great memories, I should plan a trip there and get something new.
I miss the late 80s, early 90s. Back then there were all the company's making parts for the clod buster, such as ESP, APM and smokin' hobbys. Minute 7:33: The clod shown isn't modified, only chrome parts from ccp are mounted. The Clod belongs to Mike Lohmann, his RUclips Channel is "MikesRCworld".

Back in the amazin 80's when I was a youngster this guy at our beach campground had I'd say four or five ClodBusters. All decked out one had a grave digger body. I would drive my Tyco Turbo hopper over to his campsite and he would let me run one of those monsters. Parents couldn't afford to buy me one but they tried. Fast-forward 25 years I finally bought a Clod lol. Point being this video flooded back those memories lol.

I have a Clodbuster that’s semi modified, and a Juggernaut that I’m still putting together, debating if I should restore it or modify it with TXT-2 like suspension. Anyway, more people uses the Clod for racing due to the lack or torque twist when launching. It’ll go straighter than a shaft driven monster truck. The TXT-1 uses cantilevers for suspension like its baby brother TLT-1, which I have 2 of.
Hi Gavin, just put your Juggernaut 2 wheels and tires on your txt 2... Should fit spot on...txt-1 had Juggernaut wheels.. Also...it has a more plush suspension because of the cantilever shock setup
Recently set about refitting my dad's completely original og clodbuster. Trying to figure out if I want to mod it at all or try to keep the retro vibe alive. Still had the original resistor speed controller driven by a servo, which I plan to replace to avoid burning it down. I'd like to get it to run on lipos, but not sure If I'll have to repower it or not. I'm thinking minimum mods and build a separate "lookalike" basher monster truck with a copied body shell
I have 2 clods, an original and a mildly modded Super Clod... Just 2 x HPI Firebolts, HPI shocks, 25kg servo and a 6200 lipo... It's pretty cack, but still fun. Although I do wince when it falls over as that's a lot of weight on the body.
Wanna see what the TXT-2 can actually do? Slap in one 3670 sensored 1/8 8.5t motor, or a 3150kv Spektrum 3660, with a 17t pinion and 3s. Single 1/8 scale 100mm shocks allaround.LOCK the rear steering. Seeing a TXT-2 kinda-sorta 'floating' over terrain at a ridiculous speed never gets old. Stock-up on gearbox top-bits. They'll break with alarming regularity, even with a little support-plate under the ballends.. Dunno why.. 😅(just kidding. 45km/h to 50km/h is about the max the TXT can survive off-road. Things start to break very, VERY often above that. It's a scale-monstertruck after all, NOT just a buggy with a truck body and oversized tires like, say, the MAXX and Kraton and such))
Gav I have just ordered clod wheels and tyres with the clod hubs. I've read that you need to space the wheels with washers if using the agrios wheel axles. Any tips please?
I want to build a Dakar truck kind of replica with Tamiya parts. Monster truck chassis (with narrow, more scale wheels) and tto1 front cab race trucks for example. What do you think?
Then in 1989, Tamiya came out with the quick drive or QD MIDNIGHT PUMPKIN, a 1/14 scale rtr version, they then in following years did a qd monster beetle, a qd clod buster, and I believe a qd Blackfoot as well.
Hey Gavin have you changed the positioning of your camera? I can see 7 or 8 items from your impressive Kyosho motor collection now, where I couldn't before :)

I'd like to get it to run on lipos, but not sure If I'll have to repower it or not. I'm thinking minimum mods and build a separate "lookalike" basher monster truck with a copied body shell
Just mod the steering and leave everything else stock 👍🏻
No mention of the Tamiya Sledgehammer?
Nope I haven’t had one on the show
I have 2 clods, an original and a mildly modded Super Clod...
It's a scale-monstertruck after all, NOT just a buggy with a truck body and oversized tires like, say, the MAXX and Kraton and such))
To me, the clod buster is the ultimate Tamiya monster truck. The square body Chevy body is what does it for me I think
It is a classic yes.
Does the wild willy not count ??
Gav I have just ordered clod wheels and tyres with the clod hubs. I've read that you need to space the wheels with washers if using the agrios wheel axles. Any tips please?
Did you paint the monster beetle if so how? Do you have to rub body down! Use primer etc as need help?
Yep, key the plastic but don't go nuts, primer, colour and then clear coat. Leave for a week or two and then cut and polish.
@@RCKickschannel Thanks they don't say any of that in the instructions thou
How did you get clod buster tires on the txt2 with using clod buster rims?
Clod Shop adapters
very fast, my Juggernaut 2 would have no chance at all :-)
Yep these are something completely different for sure.
Back again would the Agrios wheels fit the Beetle or Lunchbox .
Nope
I want to build a Dakar truck kind of replica with Tamiya parts. Monster truck chassis (with narrow, more scale wheels) and tto1 front cab race trucks for example. What do you think?
Go for it :)
The txt tires may fit my ground pounder
Then in 1989, Tamiya came out with the quick drive or QD MIDNIGHT PUMPKIN, a 1/14 scale rtr version, they then in following years did a qd monster beetle, a qd clod buster, and I believe a qd Blackfoot as well.
what about the wild willy m38 does this fit into the monster truck group?
Hey Gavin have you changed the positioning of your camera? I can see 7 or 8 items from your impressive Kyosho motor collection now, where I couldn't before :)
Great video. It's such a shame that the Agrios isn't sold in the UK, I'm sure it would be much more popular if it was, with more after market parts.
