The design of the Prelude is amazing. I love how Honda managed to give it a rear wheel drive profile despite being a front wheel drive car.

B-MAN there are beautiful and performance enhancing ways to rice out a car, especially if it looks done in Japan by someone that understands aesthetics and maintaining high standards. When it's cheaply done, over cambered with useless stance, dragging on every tiny bump and farting like a broken subwoofer from a coffee-can-speed-eating-eBay-cat-back....that's when people rightfully hate it. My 95' is transforming slowly into the former option. If it had been cherry when I got her I'd keep her totally stock, but it was a little beat so I'm planning on a custom wide-body and an AWD drivetrain conversion soon
Correction: It wasn't middle range, when you went a dealer it was most expensivest Honda you can buy(not including nsx). It had abs, srs, cruise control, digital climate control, Sunroof, electronic mirrors, seatbelt warning etc. too. And it's rivals wasn't hot hatches, it was a Gt car.
Here in the U.S., it was the most expensive "Honda" you could buy. That's because the NSX (New Sportscar eXperience) was branded as an Acura here.
I have a '95 I bought from the original owner. She paid $26k for it brand new in '96. I gave her $1k in 2018 lol

I own a 1986 Honda Prelude and even though I don't have VTEC, I still enjoy the low profile on my car. These cars are timeless!
Appreciate this video especially the recognition of the simpler yet technological advance Japanese car of its time despite the competition from your other cars in the collection. I’ve got a mint low mileage blue green 96 SI. Hardly drive it but reluctant to sell it because it will be subjected to the “fast and furious treatment”. I feel an obligation to preserve these simpler cars for the future generation despite stiff competition from more exciting cars. Would be great to get an update on your Prelude in 2022 or 2023.
Owned a 93 blue green metallic Lude. 5 speed with the VTEC. Best car I've ever owned. When the VTEC kicked in that thing was fast!

My gf had one in 94 bran new my goodness it would fly in it's time my brother had a new 94 mustang gt 5 speed and he couldn't get over the Lube I smoked that stang badly stock vs stock Prelude ate mustangs up ! Stang was only 225hp rear wheel drive lost alot of power at the rear wheels threw drive shaft rear end axles

I've had 4, my brother has had 3. Some the head gasket blew and caused piston/ cylinder damage, crashed a couple, you know, young n dumb. We currently have 2 in the driveway we each have one still
Yes for sure, I have one too. They are actually beautiful, Ha ha. Must be one of the safest cars around, you actually sit deep in the car, mine slid off the road on a diesel spill at more than 210 Km/h, just spun into a cornfield, never rolled because she is so low. Minor repairs and still drive her every day, I will never sell my Prelude, they will have to steal her. And o yes please change your front wheels around, your mags are facing the wrong direction, should be like the back wheels.

Back in 1996, when I was 16, I started a motor vehicle course at college. The college had one of these donated by the Norwich Union insurance company.
The car was a silver one. I was amazed at how advanced it was for the time.
The 4th generation is a very good looking car.
I drive my 1995 honda prelude every day it is a great car
I don't drive (it, or anything) every day, but I also still own, and love a black, '95 Prelude (SI). But I'll admit this video gave me Prelude envy because mine's looking more and more sad as the years pass (even being garaged).
My 1994 JDM Prelude has been my daily driver for seven years now - it’s a black 2.2 vtec. Definitely best to use them rather than garage them. Every journey in it makes me happy! I’ve come close-ish to selling it to get something bigger, but I don’t want to be ‘that’ person who says “ahhh I remember having a prelude once, wish I still had it!”. A performance car that can still be maintained by the conscientious home mechanic - that doesn’t happen anymore does it?

Aaron O: It’s coming up to 124,000 miles (200,000 km). Hopefully many more to go. If Scotty Kilmer’s old Celica is near to 300,000 miles then that’s the goal for my Prelude!

Agreed, I own 3 4th gens S manual, Si 4WS auto, and a VTEC manual. Absolutely love them, way over engineered compared to a Civic of the same year.
I used to own two Preludes, 88 and 95, fun memories, personally preferred the 88 with popup lights.

I owned a 95 VTEC in Canada, and I absolutely loved it. It gave me 15 years (360,000 K) of reliable service... I own a 2008 Civic Si now and I really enjoy it too, but one thing I noticed, actually after driving the Civic for a while and then getting back into a 4th gen Prelude, is that the shifter in the Prelude was SUPERIOR. So tight and mechanically slick. Don't get me wrong though, the shifter in my Civic is good, and works well, but the Prelude just felt so SOLID in comparison. I think I still miss that car...

I had a two of these. Red Euro spec 1992 with 2.0 and then 1994 black JDM 1994 VTEC. Great cars. Very respectable acceleration in higher RPMs. One thing you have not mentioned is its exceptional stability at high speeds. Long wheelbase and pretty wide and low car. It also has independent double wishbone suspension front and rear. You could do 200kmh and just chill. It was amazing for the time.

i've just bought my first Prelude, it's a 93 VTEC manual with 76000 miles. In Argentina, i'm pretty excited. I will have it with me next week. 6000 dollars here, very expensive

@@Micheal1075 Yes man. It's with me. I have been working on some issues it had but now it's almost perfect. (it had Check engine with 12 error, so i cleaned all the EGR system, including the selenoid). Beautiful and powerful car.
Ramiro Lenarduzzi Glad to hear it! My dad gave me his 93 S (automatic I know) with a H22A in it a few months ago as my first car. It needs work but it runs, but not bad considering it’s about to hit 300,000 miles (the body is, the motor only has about 80,000).

Oh btw. The rusting of the sunroof is fairly common but no worries. you can replace it with the glass sunroof off of 97-2001 preludes. The dimensions are the same. No more rust

Had a VTEC prelude for ten years and loved every day. I had a janspeed exhaust fitted which was great for power and noise above 5000rpm. Handling fantastic with very sure fwd. Great to have this reminder!

Loved my 1991 black vtec auto 4ws with sport mode. Drove and handled like an AWD. Unmodified whatsoever but managed to evenly race a 94 Subaru WRX. WRX just couldn't get away. Very reliable and cheap to run in New Zealand back in the late 90s. These cars also had side intrusion beams in the doors. Thanks for the vid!!

I love 4 seater 2+2 Sports coupes because I grew up in the back of them. Parents have the ability to share their passion for cars with children when Sports Cars have 4 seats.

Totally get it I've got a Civic Type R gt from 2007 as JDM guys have a passion for cars because it's not just about the speed this about the feeling you get when you look at a car and when you drive it, once you've experienced VTEC you generally addicted to it I also have a Mitsubishi FTO GPX mivec which precedes a lot of the VTec and actually you get even more of an euphoric feeling when you drive it it's an amazing feeling and sound. I've driven loads of turbo cars and yes is nice when the turbo kicks in but it doesn't give you analogue feel and sound that you get from these na engines. Cars like this are the future Classics now and people like me and you will be at the classic car event saying to remember when these were Carmen back in the 80s and 90s , generally mine with house speakers stuck in the boot, Brylcreem when I had hair 👏👍
how is it not racy and sexy ? its brilliant .. that car never lost its wow factor .. I still go like .. WHAT ! ? when i see one its super sexy and has that racy look to it.
Not sure if anyone else cares, but I'm always interested in how people with lots of cars manage the day to day. Things such as your mind set if you feel you need to take a car out for a run rather than driving the car purely because you want to etc?
Shmee clearly has a solution, but assuming you're a busy guy, does it ever feel like a chore, and take some of the shine away?

It can sometimes feel like a chore - especially when you have to move 2 cars just to get one out. That often means some cars don’t get driven for months, which bothers me. In general I drive to rotate all the cards to ensure each one gets a little love.

I picked up my 94 non vtec Si almost ten years ago bone stock. It’s a race car/daily driver with a F20b swap making 230 at the front wheels which would probably be 250+ crank hp. Tein coils,toyo proxes tires,energy suspension bushing. Long list of mods in the engine bay including solid motor mounts.
Stock the suspension is very soft and has plenty of body roll. Stock brakes are pretty great with good power for street driving. I had zero issues with the stock brakes when I went road racing in it last year,no brake fade. The dash is one of the best features on the prelude.

TheCarGuys.TV even stock the car was tons of fun. It was the car I did my driving test with and I learned how to drive with it. I’d say the tein suspension,energy suspension bushing paired with my 225/45/15s was a major upgrade. It improved the driving feel dramatically. The car is SO much flatter and that’s that I only have like a half an inch drop. I had it dropped a while back and handling was ridiculous but I’m a good way. I need the camber kit to lower it more,it ate up my tires in just under 3weeks. You can do suspension mods and only a intake just to have an amazing induction sound.

Spot on in every way! The Prelude MK4 is one of the best - underestimated or at least under appreciated cars made by Honda. Please keep these great video's coming.

I bought my wife a '95 Prelude that someone said slapped pink paint and a horrifically loud exhaust. It sits very nicely be my '05 Mustang convertible. But to be honest whenever I take her car to the shop for an oil change, I am joy riding the car. It's fun and turns heads everywhere it goes. Plus it's nice have my Mustang next to it at car shows.
Great video. The car is in fantastic condition for its age and definitely a collectors item. I personally think the Prelude was ahead of its time with its dashboard, amazing engine and 4ws. I think the Prelude were competing against the Fiat Coupe and probably the Toyota Celica aswell at the time. I totally get why you have it in the collection and those of us in the Know can appreciate it very much. Honda built great cars with amazing engines back then. It's the same reason i bought a '99 Honda Integra Type R last year as a summer/weekend car and it's credentials speak for itself.

Such a great car. I favored it as well. still puts out more HP and torque than todays Hondas.
My old 2003 Acura RSX S-Type was also great. Similar engine and performance to this. Really clean, simple interior. Handed down to a family member and still runs great today. Unbelievably reliable car. I think to this day the only non-consumable part that it has ever replaced was some minor, inexpensive sensor.
Honda's engineering was pretty legendary in this era, on many fronts, engineering the front bonnet/scuttle line so low was exceptionally unusual and tough to achieve. Read any of the Prelude praise by LJKS for some great insight, it was his favourite road-car. On AWS, I recall Honda/Mazda/Nissan of the era had a tech arms race underway, with AWS coming to quite a few cooking road models as a result.
I remember reading LJK Setright in the 90s - I always thought it was the Accord he liked the best - never stopped going on about the quality of the sound system
He loved most things Honda … had at least 3x Preludes consecutively over the years though.
@TerrariumFusilage1 Have to push back on that claim. The Porsche 928, introduced in 1977, had what was called a Weissach rear axle with passive rear-wheel steering.
He actually claimed that no other car was as fun to drive as a Prelude. He loved it!

I love this. I still miss my Honda Prelude 2.2 Vtec. Best car I’ve ever had. The shape is a thing of a beauty only the 4th gen had. Completely agree about the dashboard. A one time passenger called it the back to the future car cos of the cool display. And though I rarely got the chance to use it I loved the vtec power surge - you could feel the push in your back. Just brilliant. Sadly as an import it cost a fortune in maintenance and parts but I’d still buy another one…but only 4th gen.
I had a 92 2.3L none VTEC 5 speed and black in colour. It was probably my favorite car I've ever owned! Beautiful car!

I get it. It's a classic and becoming rare in original cond. Great engineering of the time. For all my more obvious classics i'd add a mk1 Swift GTI to my collection anytime. Loved mine back in the day.

My third gen Prelude si never gave me a problem. I bought it at 62k miles, drove it to 200k then sold it because I had to. It was still running like a new car. I just had to keep up with basic maintenance to keep it that way. I didn't have any rust or leak issues with the sunroof either. I honestly think the third gen seems more well put together than all other generations. But, I do love all Preludes and I wish Honda would bring us a new one.

I had a 2.2 VTEC -93 Fine Art Edition. Bought it around 2000, with 120 000 km on the clock, sold it around 2011, it had done over 270 000 km in total by that time. So I drove it a lot :) It was slightly lowered, by a cm or two, not more, and had some nice OZ 5 spoke wheels in addition to the original rims. And a detachable tow ball! I was told the original owner used it to transport his boat.
Rust was the main enemy. Plenty of it when I sold it. The engine, never any problems. Regular servicing kept it in great condition. No noticeable oil consumption between services for example. The 4WS, if you had a worn starter battery the 4WS system would give a warning and lock in neutral position. New battery and the warning was gone. Never faulted beyond that. I did get the occasional ABS warning towards the end of my ownership, left that for the new owner (yes I did inform him about it). The exhaust system was replaced around 140 000 km mark, got a custom built stainless steel that will last for a very long time. The exhaust system was still in great shape when I sold the car, 130 000 km later.
The only other car I've owned that had as few issues as my Prelude was a Honda Civic 2011, which also saw plenty of km added to it during my 6 years ownership. Honda really know how to build reliable cars.
Interesting details on the 8th generation of the Civic (EU version): Look at the front of the car and compare it with the 4th gen Prelude. The V shape from the bumper and up towards the windshield. Very similar to the Prelude. And take a look at the dashboard. The Preludes sweeping dashboard with the speaker grille fabric at the very ends can be seen in the top part of the EU version of the 8th gen Civic. Just my own observations after owning both of them :)

After owning a F40, this carguy know why old Honda's are pretty perfect cars ! I have a Dc2 Type R and those classics of 90's are not the most beautifull cars around but are build with a lot of love ! Thanks Honda !

I admit I have serious Prelude envy over your beautiful, clean, silver, insanely low milage, VTEC.
I'm still driving a '95 SI, which is looking more and more sad as time passes. Secondary gauge cluster has been out for around 16 years, ABS, nearly as long. clutch and motor have both been replaced, she's always garaged, but still rusting ... but I still love 'er. (she's 25 now!) It's good to see I'm not the only one.

1994 Honda Prelude Si (wrecked by a family member... eventually scrapped, though parts kept for a project)
1993 Honda Prelude VTEC (was bought as the project to replace the 1994, we are currently in the process of restomodding this with a K24 engine and six speed transmission)
1994 Honda Prelude VTEC (girlfriend, then fiancee, then wife bought this as her car, lightly modded by prior owner, we sold it to my cousin for $2 as it would not pass inspection where we were moving, my cousin loves it and she still uses it, we have visitation rights)

Back in 2000 I was lucky enough to acquire a black Prelude 2.2 V-tec with some 55,000 miles on the clock. It was a Japanese import however, which caused me some slight insurance hiccups, but my regular mechanic had all the right equipment to deal with imports and I was up and running. I decided that the standard 15 inch alloys looked too small so I bought a set of 16 inchers from my local Honda dealer who then set the car up properly for me.
The car did have some body roll but the ride was delicious as was the complete lack of understeer when cornering. You could even get the tail to twitch if you pushed a bit too hard through the twisties. I must say that at the time the car got more female attention then I did and my Wife has told me in all honesty that she fell for the car before she fell for me!..🤣🤣🤣🤣. Apparently the car looked very sexy in black with the alloy upgrade according to female friends at the time. It was a good overtaking machine but mine had a rev limiter on first gear and I don't know if this was an import only thing?. The car was so reliable for me and not too bad fuel wise but I eventually moved on to an imported 1997 Subaru Impreza WRX STI version 3 which only weighed some 1200 kilos and packed a genuine 300bhp so it was supercar fast. I found it's performance incredible, even coming from the brisk Prelude, but I will always remember my Prelude very very fondly. I can heartily recommend the car. 👍

Everybody talks about the VTEC, but the flexibility of the 2.2 is very good, and the throttle response (remember when cars had it?), amazing, almost telepathic.

Deffo one of the most beautifully sculpted bodies of all time.....timelessly beautiful.
I had a 1996 honda prelude at age 19, the guy before had put a super charger, new cams, intercooler, racing exhuast, manifold, cat 2 alarm, closes all windows and sunroof as you lock the car. Honestly it was an experience and nothing could keep up with it, i raced it weekly at street racing, as at the time every cunt thought they were paul walker, i cant honestly say how many people and cars i terrorized in that prelude, no one was safe, you could hear it a mile away. RIP prelude, never drove a car with so much character and i had a seat leon cupra R, BMW's and Audis since, nothing compares to the prelude. Only downside for me was it drank 2 litres of oil a week and didnt handle very well, but it was a straight line car for me

I couldn't afford the VTEC back in the day, but got a bargain on a 2.3i 4WS. Loved the look of it, the way it drove, and the sound of the engine when you revved it.
Not sure why this was suddenly recommended lol. But man, this was my first car that I actually saved and shopped around for, like 20 years ago. Red 1995 SRV or whatever, the vtec model. It was like a go kart through the canyons...but also a very comfortable daily driver. Just perfect. Friends were so desperate to ride along, they would crumple into the back seat with their feet up. Been seeing a lot of videos about the Prelude lineup recently. Really glad to see it getting more attention. Been working on my 5th gen for around 3 years now and I love it to death. Takes everything I throw at it and more.
I have owned 8 or 9 4th gen Preludes, which is pro ably about half of the 4th gen up here in Alaska, and I have always loved them. I started out with the basic F22A1 SOHC, all the way up to my last one, which was my baby. I had a bored, can't, port '`n polished JDM H22a, which was my favorite motor I have ever owned. That beast could handle 9500 rpms no problem, for about a year and a half... then it couldnt... But it was a backroad brawler in it's heyday. Never lost on the streets, and being tinted out, with matte black body and wheels, it never got caught by the Troopers! But I never owned a 4ws model. ..
I bought a 2.0 i automatic one a few months ago. The most slow one of the engines with 133 hp but still fun 2 drive indeed. (and i don't have the 4 wheel steering or the power of this one in you're video). Ones you get settled in the seats it's hard to stop driving it or even get out of it.. that's how lovely it is being in 1 of them. Anyway awesome video and great job finding this car 2nd hand.. i only found the 2.0i 16v .

I have a 94 prelude Si H23 non vtec with 230,000 miles, doesn't have the top end of the vtec version but more torque. My daily driver. Great car somewhat fun, very reliable. My ABS never worked since I have owned it. ABS light is not on weirdly enough.
I´m one of those that love the Prelude. I´ve had two, the first one dark red with the smallest engine, the second one was bright red with the 2,3 litre engine. I definitely want another one but at the moment there are no interesting for sale in Sweden and I don´t have the economy to import one.
But I have high hopes that some day I will once again drive a Prelude.

THIS JUMPED OUT ON THE RUclips FEED. I had the exact same model, silver 2.2vtev with full black leather trim. Mine was on a 96 plate, the cross over year to the disapointihg 5th gen. Your film was so engaging, it was like looking back in time. I've had Type Rs and TTs since but nothing has been so precious as My Lude. The full width digital dash was something very different married with the black leather, which was rare as most had fabric, many of my friends used to say they liked travelling in the Knight Rider after the TV show. The advertising you showed was perhaps out of step however, the greatest F1 driver of them all, who had a very close relationship with Honda at the time, Ayrton Senna promoted it in Japan. I loved the profile and front end look, the lights particularly. I disagree with the back end, I like the light clusters and whilst the rear wing maybe just ascetics, without it on some models, it looks bare. The Star Trek front seats were so cool. As for issues, mine was faultless. Thankfully the four wheel steer never failed or the fuel pump, but exactly like yours, my sun roof bubbled with rust. I took mine over 100k with no grotesque mods. It had the sunroof and wheel arches cut out and repaired from rust, I didn't want to let it go, yet with age it started needing more done and I eventually sold it to a guy who was beside himself thrilled. Its the only car I've sold which I cried about when it left, yet it was the right time. I'd enjoyed its best years. Yours is in superb condition. Enjoy it and thanks for posting. 😂

I owned one, the best car I ever had. Once you turned on the ignition, it went through all kind of test procedures, and you could hear it if you listened carefully, it made you feel that car was well prepared for another trip. Underneath the back seat was the main computer that controlled the whole car, it looked quite impressive, and if you would lift up that hood, wow.... those Honda engineers can design such beautifully looking engines, showing such care for every detail. I've been in love with Honda since Senna was driving Honda in F1. It also is a car in which you sit really deep, and the seats were top notch, with also great support on the side, making you feel righter comfortable in tight corners. I've always been a huge fan of Honda's double wishbone suspension, it made the car feel glued to the road in corners, I always felt in control of the car. And the look is timeless, other Prelude models looked outdated on the outside, this one doesn't. By the way, and this doesn't get enough attention, they were super reliable, in the US it was at one point according to statistics the most reliable car out there.

Great video. I love my 95’ SE, even without vtec it’s really torque-y and fun, and just so darn pretty. FWI sunroofs were standard kit on all Preludes. I just bought and need to install a gen5 glass sunroof to swap out; they fit with just a bit of modding.

I used to own a red version of the 4th Generation Honda Prelude. It was an amazing car. One friend dubbed it the "Tart Cart"😂. Any way one more thing I would say: unless you are drunk, it's practically impossible to unknowingly overheat the engine. The engine temperature gauge is positioned and designed in such a way that you will immediately notice the slightest raise in temperature.

Honda were on fire in this period. I absolutely adored my DC2 Integra Type R. As you say I don't think a lot of people get them, I find that changes pretty quickly as soon as they've driven one.
I also call it the star trek honda. I friend of mine got one in the early 2000s, and I was in love with the dashboard.

To this day the 4 gen prelude is one of the sexiest cars . In its generation it was by far the sexiest Car Honda made. The NSX is sexy to tho.

I have one of the first ever made 4th Gens at the end of 1991. It's green JDM VTEC with 4WS, lowered with H&R red springs and 17" Rota Boost white wheels. People are turning heads like crazy! Kids a looking at it not knowing what it is, but it is so cool to them I feel like I drive Ferrari. No kidding! It was my daily, but now I try to preserve it and I don't drive it that much. Drove it today though and that was fun.
I have one of the last 4th Gens - '96 VTEC (also in midnight green) and it's def a head turner.
Lovely car , had two of these swoopy ones in my youth . First one was an automatic in black all colour coded , lovely condition . Only problem was that is was the 2.0i not the VTEC but I took that off and replaced it with a type R badge and had the only one in the world !! Fooled a few people ( overheard a few saying I didn't know they did a type R prelude ) besides wheels that was the only mod . Next one was a manual VTEC metallic blue dark blue . The difference was huge and as a result I put it into a gatepost a year or so later . On a bendy road in mid wales . My first one was the original version with pop up lights .... I could go on . Everyone that comes across mine loves it since I had it fully restored, paint has a mirror finish in new formula red. Adjustable suspension, wheels and some bolt ons are the only mods but the stock body with fresh paint and all exterior trim replaced makes peoples mouths drop lol.
I remember on my first day of high school I was a nervous wreck, and a family friend phoned and asked if myself and his son want to get dropped off in the prelude at school (it was his first day as well). It was so exciting being dropped off in front of the school in such an iconic and cool car. I have always dreamed of owning one since then. One day when the time and finances are right I look forward to owning one :)

If you want to look different and distinctive in an affordable way.....especially in this dull thick volumed monstrous SUVs era...maybe this is your car....

Thanks for your awesome review. What a beauty of a find! Perfect condition. I've always wanted one after my brother owned one. Found a 1997 in near new condition as well. It's in the shop getting the front suspension replaced..all tie rods etc. Hands down one of the funnest cars to drive. 🏁🏁
