  • A patellar dislocation - or a dislocation of the kneecap - is a fairly common knee injury, especially among young athletes. In this video, I explain how the injury typically occurs, when you need surgery for it, and what the recovery entails.
If you have knee, hip, shoulder, or other joint pain and you want to get significantly better in the next 30 days, without cortisone shots, physical therapy, or surgery, click this link and share your injury information in the description box to learn more.

I have dislocated my right knee twice, such a painful thing oh my word. The second time i just knew that i had done it again and because my mum didn’t know that it was out, we tried to walk inside and BLOODY HELL it hurt. It’s really caused me trouble with my knee and it has become extremely sensitive and it is very hard to get out of my head the two times it has happened. I feel a really uncomfortable feeling when i have to walk across where both of the dislocations occurred and it causes flashbacks. It’s just horrible.

That's what I had in 2006 and popped it back in right away just as a reflex and thank God for this! I have been having issues with my right knee ever since...

Sometimes the cartilage under the kneecap is damaged in the dislocation and can lead to long-term issues. Hopefully that's not the case with yours.

After popping it back, were you able to walk again instantly? How many weeks or months were you able to walk again?
I currently have this one, and its over a week already. I cannot still take a step, yet I can still stand in both legs, with the help of a knee immobilizer.

Three Orthopedic Surgeons told me to just do exercises to strengthen the muscles around the patella after dislocating knee twice in a year and several times growing up. Help! I’m 65 and the MRI said, my bone is flat that holds the patella bone in place, and I have some ortho- arthritis now. They said, the MFPL surgery has a high failure rate. My life has been halted with no answers or directions but to just wait for the next dislocation is an 3:47 excruciating thing to look forward to? I can’t find any answers

My kneecap was dislocated for 4 days due to misdiagnoses as it was just a sprain. Finally got into the ortho doc and had a MPFL Sx it was unsuccessful and countless disloactions kept reacuring. 5 more unsuccessful Sx's. By the 6th they used a swin ligament. No more total dislocations but frequent subluxations. Its been 12ish years now. Im on my feet 10-12 hrs a day along with heavy lifting and painful positions (im a vet tech) The pain, swelling, tightness/catching is a daily struggle. I now am having the same sublux issues is the "good knee"
What do you suggest I do or which direction could you point me in? Besides the obvious daily pain management treatments I already do.
    I appreciate you!

Hi doc, I just had the patellar dislocate hours ago and this is my third time in general but the second time on my right knee. I am not in sports but I am training in theatre and performance and we do a lot of exercises that require a lot running and jumping to improve stamina and the core for stage. I am not sure of what to because when i go to a doctor I am told to do knee exercises to lessen the chances of dislocating again, although it gets to the point where my knee hurts for days. What do you recommend in this situation?

    Advice from anyone.
I had a lateral subluxation about a year ago. And didn’t do PT right away. I’m still dealing with intense pain, limping and it sucks. Mentally. I used to ice skate go hiking workout daily. Do my dog training business. I’m only 29 man and I can’t do any of that anymore. I can barely get though PT sometimes. It’s taking a toll on my mental health cause I feel so hopeless. I havnt been ice skating in an over a year. I can’t handle big dogs when I do training. Can barely hike on a good day. Can lift or squat. And as a girl that sucks. Anyone have any recovery stories?

After popping the knee back on its place? How many days do patients usually be able to walk again? In general?
My dislocation is over a week already, yet I cannot still take a single step.
Tho I am able to stand straight both of my legs, with the help of a knee immobilizer.

Okay, im gonna answer my own question. It took 3 weeks for me to be able to walk, using a knee immobilizer. 4 weeks to be able to walk without the aid of it. 5 weeks to be able to walk 2miles without using it, and am able to fold my knees, sit and stand up from the floor.
It really depends on how persevered you are, and how active you are. I rarely take pain killers, tho I massage my knee to toes every morning and every night.
Hope this helps to other people who are curious
