18:16 - In Manga Riza said she wanted to remove knowledge of flame alchemy, so good men couldn't be turned into madness by it anymore.
And Mustang was disgusted with himself, from learning that his actions had led Riza consider killing herself.

    This episode... oh my.
As you noticed, the thing with Mustang here is not that he's killing Envy, is that he was torturing Envy. I love how the animation changed: Mustang's face was disfigured by hate, his eyes were monstrously scary and Envy on the other hand looked pitiful, like a wounded animal that is getting ready for slaughter. The dynamic changed, you're supposed to kinda pity Envy and be scared by Mustang, not the other way around like always. The "monster" here is Mustang.
When Mustang uses his alchemy, he controls himself to do they least damage that he could do, because his alchemy is so destructive and powerful, he's precise, he has pinpoint accuracy, he's always focused and doesn't make unecessary moves. But here he uses that accuracy to inflict the highest amount of pain possible to Envy, he doesn't care about the mission anymore, just revenge, he's sloppy in that way... he's wasting time and letting Envy run and be chased to further Envy's torment and humiliation. He's no longer focused like when he killed Lust and burned her to death, he's taking his time, enjoying and savouring the torture fueled by hatred. Is like what Lust said when she died "(...) honest eyes with no hesitation. I can't wait... The days when those eyes will show anguish..." or something like that. She praised the coldness of Mustang, he killed her with no hate, just focus. That's why here everybody was against him killing Envy, he already tortured the hell out of Envy, what good would killing Envy bring? He doesn't need that, he needs to calm down. He was so blinded by hate that he was angry and yelling at Hawkeye and he threatened Ed with burning his arm, like, what? Seriously? For a moment, he became Wrath, and a man like that would be terrible for leading a country. Envy definitely deserved suffering and even death, and Mustang's hate was understandable, but he was too close to this, he was losing himself. Because he no longer cared for his friends, at least not the ones alive right now.
Also, it's ok to pity Envy. That's what we are supposed to do. Envy was jealous of humans, but we never caught that because Envy always liked creating chaos. Envy thrived on it, always trying to make humans fight and hate each other, causing suffering and getting excited by that in the most disgusting way. But a lot of humans got back up again despite all the tragedy, and the Homunculi hated that, especially Wrath (who couldn't understand it and it made him angry) and Envy who also couldn't and it made Envy jealous. Because teaming up and fighting adversity is hard, so hard, the Homunculi expected humans to just give up to their instincts (sins) and continue the cycle of hatred and violence (which they did, in a lot of cases), but a lot of them didn't. Humans can "love their enemies", the virtue opposite to envy. That's what made Envy jealous, that Envy could no longer create chaos and misery. It was humiliating (along with Mustang's torture), that's why Envy killed themselves... Envy was experiencing understanding ("love") by one of they enemies for the first time, Envy couldn't accept that, it was the ultimate defeat. And it humanized Envy.
I loooove that writing, I love this anime. And I freaking love your reactions, they're so good and addictive! You remember the names of pretty much all the characters and you're so invested! Thank you!
Also, so sorry for the tl;dr, I get carried away most of the times xddd

I do appreciate the fact that when Envy threatened Hawkeye, he decided he was done playing with his food.
He was hella far gone, but not so far gone to ignore that her presence had changed the situation.

It also needs to be mentioned how absolutely brilliant it is in terms of setting expectations. Mustang was the first person to ever kill a Homunculus and it was an absolutely kick-ass moment. Hughes was the first good person to die (outside of flashbacks) and it was absolutely heartbreaking. Then we see Mustang vow to avenge Hughes and what else are we to think than "F*CK YES" - especially when throughout the entire story Mustang asks every Homunculus he meets "are you the one who killed Maes Hughes?" and keeps searching. By the time Mustang and Envy meet and the question is raised once again, the audience has been meticulously and carefully MADE to expect and crave Mustang obliterating Envy. Why wouldn't we? Envy has been the catalyst for countless atrocities in the story, always laughing, with no sign of remorse, whereas Mustang is the just hero. Avenging our best pal Hughes can't possibly be a bad thing, right?
Forget his shoes, the audience has been put in Mustang's entire outfit, top to bottom - and then taught a lesson.

Two things: One, Envy was his own worst enemy. He was going to get himself killed by someone. His only joy was destroying others, so he can't do anything when they cooperate. And two, Mustang was on a metaphorical ledge and he could back down or jump. There's no unjumping after killing Envy. It's symbolic more than literal, as Mustang could potentially be good afterwards, but who knows.
Love your reactions! I can't wait for these last episodes.

Actually, Riza's father, Berthold Hawkeye, invented flame alchemy himself. So he and Roy are the only people to ever use it! I wonder what must be wrong with a person to encode such knowledge as a tattoo on your child's back, though
Epic reaction as always! Roy and Riza are SO not done with kicking butt in this show, btw

Since you're watching the sub version, wanted to mention an interesting detail regarding Roy and Riza's conversation in episode 54.
While trying to calm down Mustang, Riza was the one to drop all the formalities towards him (which, by the way, props to the sub version, because I don't think there's a proper way to adapt it in English).
Throughout most of the series she calls him "taisa" (colonel), but during this scene she changes it to "anata". "Anata" in Japanese is one of the most common ways of saying "you" and, while a change from calling a person in a more casual way (using a name, for example) to "anata" can be considered cold or even rude, in this case going from something so formal as "taisa" to a common "anata" makes a conversation much more personal. "Anata" in Japanese is also a way for a wife to address her husband (like "dear" or "honey" is English), which doesn't necessarily imply any romantic undertones (👀) between Mustang and Hawkeye, but for sure changes the whole role of the conversation between these two into something more significant and intimate.
That being said, as always, great reaction, can't wait to get to the grand finale of this show! 💫

@@AlanaMisako Oh no (oh yes), guess I'd be adding some more fuel into this Royai fire by saying that Arakawa herself basically said (I believe, during an interview or something like that?) that they didn't get married by the end of the series because anti-fraternization laws exist, which means "they could no longer stay as superior officer and subordinate".
On the other hand, they kinda overthrew the government together, so a couple of words on paper doesn't really seem like a serious obstacle to me, if you know what I'm talking about 👀
(Although, the ambiguity of their relationship is what makes it special, but still, doesn't hurt to dream sometimes:))

Every single episode of this show is just a masterclass in storytelling, writing, and cinematography. So many great moments in these episodes but one I really think that's underrated is the final encounter between Father and Hohenheim. Ending 5 is one of my favorite songs and I love how they use it in the background to make the scene even more emotional for those watching. And a nice little detail in that scene is that in one of the shots you see Father through the Erlenmeyer flask, which is a reference to the Dwarf in the Flask. Ahhh such an amazing show.

I watched this 'show' (masterful art) as it was being aired and subbed... it was brutal waiting a week on some of those cliffhanger moments.
You are, hands down, the best reactor for this show - you have keen insights, respect for all the characters, and a level of investment that the story deserves. It's an absolute pleasure watch!
Also, serious props for watching this in the original Japanese. While the English dub is "good" - the original VAs bring things to a whole new level to make this show one of the all time bests.

Yes, it's like Scar and Winry's situation. They did the same thing to stop Mustang just like Ed stopped Winry. And also, when Mustang killed Lust, he killed her to protect Hawkeye & Al. But here, he wanted to kill Envy for his personal revenge
And btw i really need to say this 😂

I really love these episodes, but I think Mustang's plot dynamic isn't made clear enough. A large part of the show focuses on how Scar was seeking justice and willing to go through any means to obtain it, to be consumed be hatred. Eventually Scar realizes he was wrong to be consumed by hatred.
Here, the idea is that Mustang is about to become the next Scar by being consumed by that same burning hatred, but he has friends to stop him from becoming that.
The issue technically is that although the friends clearly state they are going to kill Envy, it feels like they friends weren't.
Mustang only has a single stop on this hate train, whereas Scar had the entire military on his list, so the implication of the train continuing is hard to imagine.

I've said this every time a reactor gets to this point.
Everyone wanted Mustang to do what he did here, there's not 1 member of the FMA fandom that didn't hate Envy for what he did to Hughes, we love the man and all anime fans still rate him as the number 1 dad of all time.
And Arakawa took note of this, she'd seen how the fans reacted in both the manga and the 03 anime and I'm betting anything she came up with this scenario to show where the path of hatred takes us. We WANT Mustang to get revenge on the thing that killed his best friend but we don't want him to be destroyed by doing either because we know Roy is a better man than that.

I cried when I first time saw Envy die and cried now seeing you start crying. It was really sad to me, cause even if he's a controversial character, not everyone its just bad or just good in fma and being an homunculi without care ou friends must be sad. Glutonny and Lust were friends, Greed had a family almost, Wrath has a wife that himself choose. I can see Envy's struggle. In the very end, he was alone and jealous of humans that can be empathic and love and all those emotions that he never felt. Something caught me tought. "Bye, bye... Edward... Elric...". Was Envy had something with Edward image? Something at least?
